Criterion's new 4K restoration of Ernst Lubitsch's Trouble in Paradise (1932) presents this key pre-Code comedy of crime, sex and manners a pleasing technical upgrade. The famous "Lubitsch touch" adds a great deal of charm to attitudes which in just two years would be forbidden by the censorious Puritanism of the Production Code which would infantilize Hollywood for the next three decades.

Arrow has lavished a new 4K restoration on Tobe Hooper's TV adaptation of Stephen King's Salem's Lot (1979), which remains one of the best adaptations of the author's work. The two-part miniseries gives Hooper time to create a creeping mood of dread as evil seeps through the small Maine town claiming one victim at a time as the few who realize what is happening try to find a way to stop the corruption. The two-disk set offers the original two parts or a single combined presentation, along with the clumsy two-hour cut-down released as a theatrical feature overseas, accompanied by half-a-dozen appreciative interview featurettes.

A pair of 4K restorations offer exceptional presentations of two genre classics. Arrow's edition of Michael Crichton's Westworld (1973) emphasize the innovation of this familiar sci-fi satire, while Severin's release of Riccardo Freda's The Ghost (1963) reveals a key film of the Italian Gothic which has been largely overshadowed by the better-known work of Freda's protege Mario Bava.

With my move to a new apartment imminent, I revisit some familiar films, with both confirmation and revision of long-held opinions. A Fistful of Dynamite (1971) is something of an outlier in Sergio Leone's career, displaying his skill with impressive large-scale action, but an awkward mix of comedy and violence; Hearts of Darkness (1991), constructed around Eleanor Coppola's behind-the-scenes footage from the production of Apocalypse Now, remains one of the greatest films about movie-making; and Pupi Avati's The House With Laughing Windows (1976) is a potent meditation on the lingering traces of Fascism in post-war Italy viewed through the genre filters of horror and the giallo.

Radiance's edition of Marco Bellocchio's Slap the Monster on Page One (1972) and Fun City Editions' three-disk Seeing Red set illustrate the thematic and psychological flexibility of the crime genre.
