Calcium And The Importance In Nutrition

The human body needs calcium more than any other mineral. A man weighing 70 kg. contains one kg. of calcium. About 99 percent of the quantity in the body is used for building strong bones and teeth and the remaining one percent is used by the blood, muscles and nerves.

Calcium And Osteoporosis - How Do We Keep It Working

Most people know that calcium is important to building and maintaining strong bones, teeth, and muscles. However, many are unaware of the other important roles calcium plays in the body: it helps with digestion through the production of hormones and enzymes, helps nerves pass the messages needed to contract the heart and other muscles in the body, assists in normal blood clotting, and may help prevent high blood pressure and colon cancer.

Calcium & Aging

As you age your calcium needs change. You start needing more of the types of foods rich with calcium to stay strong. Recently, researchers created a new Food Pyramid for people over a certain age. It informs us that eating at least three servings of calcium-rich foods to meet the daily requirements of calcium and Vitamin D is needed for people over a certain age. After a certain age, more calcium is needed to prevent the bone disorder called osteoporosis. This disease affects more than 28 million Americans, and 80% of that are women.

Calcium - It Is More Important Than Most Think

Calcium is a very important mineral because it is used in the formation of teeth and bones. Almost 99% of calcium if found in these structures where as only 1% is found in tissues and body fluids for helping important functions such as muscle contraction, cell metabolism and transmission of nerve impulse. Trucker’s complete nutrition contains 50 mg of calcium per serving to help maintain teeth and bone health.

Calcium - Is It Everything We Been Told ?

Calcium also reacts to water, so much so that it actually takes the place of hydrogen in the water and creates something called calcium hydroxide. Calcium is very important when it comes to muscle contraction, building strong bones and teeth, helping to regulate heartbeats, blood clotting, the transmission of nerve impulses and maintaining a fluid balance within the cells. It is suggested that in the US, between 50 to 75% of adults don't get enough calcium in their normal daily eating habits.

3 Steps Gastric Bypass Patients Can Take To Avoid Calcium Deficiency

Gastric bypass patients are even more unlikely to intake adequate dietary calcium and without supplementation they may become calcium deficient which ultimately results in osteoporosis. Weight loss surgery patients are limited by the volume of calcium rich foods they may consume. In addition, the malabsorption issue resulting from gastric bypass presents another problem.

Without enough calcium, your body would not be able to keep its constant cycle of rebuilding and growing of the bones so as to provide the required strength to hold up your body. Your body’s need for the required calcium level changes very fast as it goes through different levels from childhood to adolescence stages.
