No!

California's drought has been causing severe damage to the nation's entire economy in addition to simply the state's water supply. A common myth surrounding the drought topic is that swimming pools waste water, thus enabling the drought to continue. Not only this misguided, but actually swimming pools conserve water rather than waste it.

7. Waterfall Features

Waterfalls have been incorporated with swimming pools and spas for years, and they're still a great asset to your backyard space! But now, California Pools offers updated, more modern, and custom designed waterfall features. They give the same vacation-spot feel - just with a sleeker look.

2. Infinity / Knife Edge

The straighter lines of modernism are taking the swimming pool building industry by storm. Crisp lines give swimming pools and spas a clean look, and the knife edge, infinity edge, and rim flow each can give your swimming pool the illusionary effect that the water level is even with the ground.

4. Outdoor Kitchen

Building a custom design kitchen outdoors is a fantastic way to enhance your family's and your guests' outdoor living experience. It's one of the most convenient ways to truly utilize the swimming pool as much as you can. Plus, incorporating stainless steel / chrome appliances and features can give your backyard living area its modern finishing touch.

6. The "Spool"

A lot of families these are desperate to squeeze a swimming pool into a tight space, so we compromise by building something in between a swimming pool and a spa: a "spool." You can get the best of both worlds by having hot tub-style jets but still plenty of room to swim and splash around with guests or kids.

Mike Welch accepted the Wayne Steimle award at the California Pools 2015 Awards Banquet. While it may have been "completely unexpected" for Mike Welch, it is certainly well-deserved since Mike serves the San Diego (North) area with an attitude completely dedicated to his clients. His 35 years of success in the area debunks the myth that morality doesn't belong in business. Because his decision-making always has his clients' interests in mind, he has become a known leader in quality pool construction in Southern California. We hope to continue having Mike Welch on the California Pools team for many years to come and are delighted to celebrate his successes.

To learn more about Mike Welch's history with California Pools, call our toll-free line at (800) 282-7665. You can also call us or browse our website for more information on the California Pools story, or contact us today for a free in-home consultation so we can turn your backyard dream into a reality.

Mike Welch, a Living Memory of Wayne Steimle

Bring March Madness to Your Own Backyard!

Whether you're a die-hard sports fanatic or not, college basketball fever takes over the country every March. This year, why not make the basketball madness a part of you backyard family fun?

As a spin-off from the tag-based game "Blind Man's Bluff," Marco Polo is a great way for kids to actively chase each other. But, it allows the kids to stay cool in your backyard swimming pool while they do it! Here are three short tips to help make Marco Polo a fun, safe experience the next time you use it at pool party:

1. More Players =
    More Fun

Make sure there are several kids willing to participate in the game. When there are only a few players, it gets boring much more quickly. But with 7 or more players, it allows the suspense to stay higher for longer. The role of "it" in the swimming pool can be passed around the group more easily.

2. Use a Blindfold

Sometimes, kids are just too young to stay focused on keeping their eyes closed the whole time when they're "it," in which case the blindfold helps. But without a blindfold, some older kids cheat intentionally. Using a blindfold, tinted goggles, or something to cover their eyes helps prevent any cheating accusations.

3. Add a Theme

To liven up the game and make it more interesting, it can be a good idea to incorporate a theme with characters or roles. For instance, the kid who's "it" in the swimming pool and saying "Marco" can be labeled a shark, while the rest of the players are fish or mermaids. If your pool party already has a theme (i.e., a pirate theme), you can work that into the game. Whoever's "it" can act as Captain Hook, while the other kids are Peter Pan and the Lost Boys.

Have more ideas about swimming pool party games to play? Let us know! If you're interested in working with California Pools, please continue to browse our website, call us for more information (800) 282-7665, or contact us for a free in-home consultation!

3 Tips for Playing Marco Polo

How To Find a Pool Leak

So, you're thinking of getting your swimming pool and backyard ready before summer hits and the kids are all out of school. But then, you notice that you're refilling your pool a lot more often than usual. Regularly severe decreases in water levels can be the first sign that you have a leak somewhere in your swimming pool system. But there can be a variety of causes, so here are a few tests you can do at home before calling a trusted professional:

1. The Bucket Test

Before making the assumption that you have a leak in your swimming pool, it is best to rule the other factors that could be causing lower water levels. One is excess splash-out, but if you don't have several kids regularly splashing about in the swimming pool / spa quite yet, it could be higher evaporation levels. The hotter our weather, the more rapidly our water evaporates.

To test this, you can place a bucket on the second or third swimming pool step. Fill it with some water and mark the current water level with a marker or piece of tape both inside and outside the bucket. After 24-48 hours, check the bucket and measure how far the water has decreased both inside and outside the bucket. If the water level decrease is the same for both, your swimming pool does not have a leak. Congratulations! But if the water level of the swimming pool (outside the bucket) has decreased significantly more than the water level inside the bucket, you most likely have a leak somewhere in your swimming pool / spa system.

2. The Filter Test

Sometimes, leaks are in the plumbing system of the pool. To rule out this cause, you can test your swimming pool's water level changes with the filter on and off. Again, it is a good idea to use tape as a marking tool so you can measure the water level change accurately. Compare the water level decreases in your swimming pool depending on the filter's activity. If your swimming pool get significantly lower when the filter and equipment is running, your leak is probably located in the plumbing.

If that's the case, it is a good idea at this point to call a trusted swimming pool professional, such as California Pools, so they can determine the cause more specifically. Also, try to examine your equipment area more closely, feeling and looking for wet areas on the pipes and the ground. If you find something unusual, report it to the swimming pool professional. However, if there is no difference in the water levels with the equipment running or not, you may have a crack or tear in the swimming pool shell.

3. The Dye Test

Often times, this is easier for a swimming pool professional to do this test so that you do not have to be underwater for hours looking for cracks and tears in the vinyl, tile, or other material. But if you prefer looking yourself, try to examine the shell of the pool very closely. Once you see a crack or tear, take an eye-dropper of pH testing solution or any safe colored liquid and release it near the crack. If the dye is suctioned into the crack / tear, you've a source to your leak! If not, keep looking or call a trusted swimming pool contractor to investigate further.

While these tests are simple enough to do at home, do not hesitate to call your swimming pool contractor / specialist at the first sign of a leak. Also, if you think you've found the source, it is better to trust a swimming pool professional to fully investigate anyway, in case there is more than one cause for your leaking swimming pool / spa.

If you're having leak trouble with a swimming pool / spa built by California Pools, feel free to call us at (800) 282-7665 to see if the location nearest you offers our Lifetime Structural Warranty. Please continue to browse our website, and contact us anytime to schedule a free, in-home consultation.

How To Find a Pool Leak

Celebrating our Coachella Valley Showroom in Indio, CA

Breaststroke

When doing the breaststroke, be prepared to work the muscles in your back. According to Kim Nunley, who holds her Master's in Kinesiology, "most of the propelling power in the breaststroke…comes from the latissimus dorsi muscles in your back." Since the breaststroke requires the frog kick, this swim pattern will use a lot of the glutes, quadriceps, and hamstrings as well.

Front Crawl / Freestyle

The front crawl swim stroke, or the freestyle, is one of the most commonly taught swimming strokes to young learners. But it is also the stroke that "generates the most force" because it uses a significant amount of shoulder strength, according to Exercise Science expert Shannon Clark. In addition, Aquathlon champion Fiona Bayly explains that the swimmer must use abdominal muscles and hip stabilizers to keep steady balance through each front crawl stroke.

Backstroke

Since the backstroke is nearly the same motion as the freestyle swimming stroke, it uses almost all of the same muscles. The shoulder muscles and abdominals are still vital for pushing your body through the water and maintaining balance. Typically, though, kicking is more difficult on your back, so the quadriceps are flexed more intensely. Bayly refers to this kicking style as the "flutter kick."

Butterfly Stroke

For this stroke, you'll use the frog kick--just as you would for the breaststroke, thus using a lot of your hamstring muscles. In addition, the butterfly stroke builds strength in the trapezius and deltoid muscles. A nursing graduate from the University of Tennessee Rachel Nall also suggests that core abdominal strength is "of vital importance to a swimmer's power" for this stroke because "the core muscles protect the back from injury."

For senior citizens aging 60 years and up, exercise is a key element in maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle. But instead of repetitive chair exercises or hard-to-follow yoga videos, why not look to the pool? Swimming incorporates the buoyancy and resistance of water so seniors can circulate every muscle and work on varying areas of their bodies every day. For example, swimming results in significant improvement in eye-hand coordination for many seniors. In fact, according to a study from university researchers in Taiwan, regular swimming improves coordination for the elderly just as much as practicing Tai Chi.

A former Olympian, Dr. Jane Katz, has also realized the beautiful balance of water exercises and has been teaching the benefits of swimming to people of all ages since 1964. She explains in an ABC News video that while the water’s buoyancy allows the body to have more freedom than it might on land, the water’s resistance forces the muscles to flex and work differently than they would on land. These yin-yang qualities make swimming a great exercise to do regularly but still be able to mix up and make fun.

“My energy level is good, my balance has improved, and overall I feel really much better,” says Claudette Ekberg in an ABC News video feature. Even with her physical improvements, Ekberg is not the only elderly swimmer to simply feel happier. Swimming is also proven to help elderly people who suffer from dementia to have increased self-worth, independence, and dignity. This is even something seniors can take part in with the family, so it could be a great way to visit, improve physically, and feel happier all at the same time. So come on in, seniors! The water’s great.

Why Swimming Benefits Seniors

As Seen on HGTV’s Flipping The Block

These inquiries include selecting the right type of water for your tranquil abode. Will it be the powerful bacteria eliminating agent of Chlorine Pools or the low maintenance nature of Saltwater Pools?

California Pools can help with both options. Our talented crew of professionals will consult with you on making the appropriate arrangements. And for those wanting to do a little research, we’ve created a comprehensive list of benefits for both options.

Chlorine Pools

Chlorinated Pools are known to be the most popular choice among pool owners, due to its ability to dispose of harmful bacteria. These pools have stood the test of time and will provide you with confidence and reassurance.

Benefits of Chlorinated Pools

Chemicals associated with chlorine breakdown bacteria instantly.

These same chemicals remain in the water and continue to fight against additional bacteria.

When maintained well, Chlorine will keep your pool crisp, clear and clean at all times.

The chlorine and filter system is basic and straightforward, making it easy to operate.

There’s no deterioration or rust to your stonework or delicate finishes, as found in saltwater pools.

If your chlorine level is too high, its natural surroundings (mother nature, swimmers, etc) will lower those levels for you. Meaning, you do nothing!

Saltwater Pools

Saltwater pools are the answer for many owners, as they contribute a supply of natural chlorine. With the use of a generator, chlorine gas is released from the salt into the water, making all “chemicals” organic. The eco-friendly nature is what draws and retains most customers.

Benefits of Saltwater Pools

Saltwater pools are eco-friendly, all natural and non-toxic.

There’s no need to add chlorine to your pool.

There’s no potent smell that’s often caused by chlorinated pools.

The salt content in saltwater pools is much lower than that found in the Ocean.

Saltwater pools will leave their bathers feeling silky and soft.

Saltwater pools don’t need added chemicals ever year, making them less expensive than chlorinated pools.

It’s important to monitor your pool and provide maintenance when necessary. The ultimate contributor to a health and safe nature is the owner. And at the end of the day, California Pools wants what’s best for its customers. Contact one of our pool and spa consultants to discuss the benefits of each type of pool in more detail, we’re happy to help.

Saltwater verses Chlorine Pools: Which Will You Choose?

City Spotlight: Fullerton, CA

Fullerton, CA is a city brimming with citrus crops and palm trees, a true

Remove & Store Your Pool Cover

While residents in Irvine, CA are not required to close their pools during the winter months, many still do. If you took the steps to close your pool, carefully remove the pool cover and cleanse it from any debris, dirt or water that may have collected. Inspect it for any damage such as holes or cuts that may have allowed rubble to seep into your pool. Once you’ve detailed your cover, allow it to dry (to prevent mold) and store it in a safe place.

De-Winterize Your Gadgets

Remove any plugs that were placed there to protect your pool during the cooler months. Inspect these areas for any damage that may have occurred throughout the winter. Be sure to replace these protection plugs with summer plugs.

Clean, Clean, Clean

Offer your pool a deep cleaning at this time. This includes the filters, water, the sides and the bottom of the pool. Add water to your pool to bring it back to level and give it time to circulate before cleaning. It’s also important to skim the pool and clean out the baskets at this time.

Add & Check Your Chemicals

At this time, you’re ready to add chemicals specific to your pool. If you’re unsure of what or how much to add, contact us (link to contact page) to receive professional advice. This part is extremely important and vital for the well being of yourself and guests.

Let Your Pool Run for 24-Hours

Let your pool run for 24-hours before utilizing it. After this time, clean out any debris, dirt and rubble and check the PH and Alkalinity levels. Keep retesting until the levels are safe and water is running clear.

Throw A Party!

Congratulations on having a well-maintained pool; invite your friends over and relish in the beauty of summer. If you have any questions on opening your pool, please don’t hesitate to contact our professionals.
All facets of the design world evolve into and out of various trends each decade. While most of these trends rapidly become popular, they also can fade away just as fast, typically never to be seen again. However, some of them have the power to stay and rewrite the history books. In the world of custom built swimming pools, one of these trends that has redefined swimming pool design is the Tanning Ledge. This fun feature really began with the evolution of several features melding onto one. Traditionally, a swimming pool had three entry steps in the shallow-end to access it. Then, creativity in design led to extending the second step into a bench seat. Meanwhile, sometime in the late 1980's, a sloping "beach-entrance" started showing up in pool designs. This beach entrance was inviting and unique, however, it required a large pool to run it from the deck level to the floor of the shallow-end. Then, innovation set in and the beach was chopped-up with a single step-down to fit into a smaller, or average sized pool.

The beach-entry is still very popular today, but what followed became and still is even more popular. The Tanning Ledge. The tanning ledge is also known as the shallow reef-step, the baja-step, the sun-shelf and the list of names goes on. You may be asking, "What exactly is this feature?" It is simple. Take the first shallow entry step of a swimming pool and stretch it out to be around 50 square feet in size, or about 5 feet by 10 feet in length and width. It's commonly anywhere between 6 and 18 inches in depth. Somewhere between 9 and 12 inches seems to be about the most popular depth for it though. Initially, the tanning ledge was seen as a place for kids to splash and play, therefore wasn't so popular for pool owners that were sans kiddos in the household. Then people began to recognize that this shallow pad was a great place to lounge and read a book. A great place to relax without sitting upright or treading water. A great place to catch some rays and soak in the sun. A great place for Fido the family dog to navigate in and out of the pool. A great place for the little tykes to get their feet wet for the first few years of life.

Nowadays, we rarely see a pool without a tanning ledge. Many are designed with bubbler water fountains, LED lighting, mosaic tiles, umbrella sleeves, even chase lounge chairs specifically designed for a tanning ledge. A tanning ledge in a swimming pool gives a pool a whole other level of usability. They are not just for the little ones treading water for the first time, they are for all generations and they are certainly one of the most popular places to hangout in today's, and in tomorrow's swimming pool.

To see examples of various tanning ledges in swimming pools, visit http://www.californiapools.com/geometric-pools/geometric-swimming-pool-1-california-pools.

One Design Element that Forever Changed the Traditional Swimming Pool

The Most Overlooked Maintenance Item

Most people understand that to keep their swimming pool and spa looking great they have to regularly maintain their filter, water chemistry, and vacuum the interior surface of their pool. But when was the last time you inspected your decking mastic?

Mastic is the rubbery material that covers an isolation joint separating the coping of your pool from your decks. See the diagram below. Its purpose is to allow the decks to move independently of the swimming pool structure, thus minimizing the potential for damage to the pool tile, coping, and structural shell. Mastic also prevents water from going down the joint and under the decks when it rains, or water splashes out of the pool from swimmers.

With time and exposure, mastic loses it's elasticity and cracks. Once the mastic has cracked it no longer seals out water and you run the risk of saturating the soil beneath the decks. This can cause your decks to raise and crack more than normal, leaving you with elevation differences between your pool coping and the decks.

Mastic replacement is relatively inexpensive compared to the alternative of damaged decking. Do-it-yourselfers can find replacement products online or at their local pool supply stores and the internet is full of good "How To" videos. Or, if you'd rather just hire someone to do it, there are many small companies that perform this service.

Whatever you do, don't overlook this small maintenance item, because ignoring it could create expensive damage to you beautiful outdoor resort.

The Most Overlooked Maintenance Item

Meet Myles Steimle!

Myles is an award winning swimming pool designer and builder with an

Take one look at this pool photo and you can understand that a project of this caliber, in this setting and of this design was truly a “once in a lifetime” experience for California Pools San Diego builder Mike Welch. After two years of design and redesign, weekly client meetings and intricate problem solving, this Pt. Loma pool is finally complete and already receiving the recognition it deserves.

The Association of Pool and Spa Professionals (APSP) awarded California Pools, North San Diego, the Gold Award in the Technical and Engineering Achievement category in the 2011 International Awards of Excellence (AOE) program for Welch’s work on the Pt. Loma masterpiece.

“This project required extreme attention to detail and engineering as it is half suspended over the slope of the yard, and above the neighbor's property line below,” says Welch. California Pools was selected among other pool contractors in the area to work with the homeowners’ architect and builder as part of an extensive, “no holds barred” remodel. Welch took note of the landscape’s precarious situation and presented man-made solutions to nature’s challenges.

“We had to work with the cliffside, but we also had some other challenges in realizing the client’s vision for an infinity edge pool,” says Welch. The homeowner wanted a 350-foot long infinity edge (much larger than the average pool of this nature) to blend the pool and the landscape into the view of the city and the bay beyond.

“In order to give a good reflection of the skyline, you need still water,” Welch explains. “Our challenge was to keep that water still at a depth of only an inch and a half.” Through carefully planned physics and engineering, the water now reflects the beautiful San Diego skyline.

Welch’s 30 years’ experience with California Pools is certainly varied, but this award-winning pool certainly proved to be a most exciting adventure for the veteran builder. Granite water features and coping imported from Jerusalem add a deserving “shine” to this gem, and Welch is back in the field with a smile on his face and another award to add to his legacy.

Our Amazing Pools: Bringing home the Gold

How does your builder rate? Inside this edition, you’ll see where CA Pools CEO Ryder Steimle was asked: “What would you do, if you were President of the United States?” This is his reply:
We have too many politicians and no leaders. My definition of a presidential leader is someone who has a crystal-clear vision for the future of our country and is willing to set aside his own agendas and the agendas of his party, and inspire our citizens and government to move toward that goal. The inspiration and motivation will come as the President sets the example and empowers the nation to make it happen.

Being a 60-year-old company, we’ve seen hard times more than once. This history and experience has taught us how to make the right decisions in order to stay at the top, even during these challenging times. We are very grateful for that.

California Pools #4 Top Builder in the Nation

Race on, swim on

The future home of California Pools Racing updates.

When it comes to including these into your diet, think color! Green and red specifically. Colorful fruits and veggies, according to www.swimming.org, contain slower burning calories rich in vitamins and minerals, which boost your immune system, maintain your digestive and respiratory systems and improve your circulation. They also contain a greater range of nutrients and antioxidants.
Just in case you can’t think of some foods to get started with, choose a few of these to get going: lettuce, cucumbers, beans, sprouts, broccoli, red peppers, red cabbage, red leaf salad leaves, etc.

Benefits of a Healthy Diet and Exercise

Pool Safety Rules

Remember these simple but important pool safety rules.

The end of summer is in sight, and the kids will want to squeeze in every last chance they can to swim before it’s back to school. The master’s at Weber (think some of the best char-grilled food you may know) have a great grilled pizza bread recipe that will be the perfect treat for a little afternoon fun with family and friends. Serve as an appetizer or a main dish. Visit http://www.weber.com/grillout/recipes/appetizers/grilled-pizza-bread to learn more.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 tsp ground Mediterranean oregano
1 tsp onion powder
¾ tsp ground black pepper
½ tsp curry powder
½ tsp kosher salt
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp red pepper flakes
¼ tsp ground cumin
¼ tsp ground cayenne pepper
¼ cup all-purpose flour
3 balls (1 lb each) pizza dough
chopped tomatoes, onions and fresh basil (all optional)

DIRECTIONS

In a small saucepan combine the seasoning ingredients. Whisk over low heat just until the oil becomes fragrant and the mixture is warm. Remove from the heat and let stand at room temperature for 2 hours.

Prepare the grill for direct cooking over medium heat (350° to 450°F).

Lightly flour one of the pizza dough balls and the back of a 15×10-inch baking sheet. Stretch out the dough to the size of the baking sheet and place it on the back of the floured baking sheet.

Whisk the seasoning mixture and then generously spread over the top side of the dough.

Brush the cooking grates clean. Turn the baking sheet over (like a big spatula) and place it directly on the cooking grate, dough side down. Remove the baking sheet and brush the top side of the dough with the seasoning mixture. Grill over direct medium heat, with the lid closed, until the underside of the dough is marked, 2 to 3 minutes. Don’t worry if the crust bubbles; it will deflate when turned over. Slide the dough onto the baking sheet and flip the uncooked side onto the cooking grate. Brush the top with more oil and continue to grill, with the lid closed, for 3 to 4 minutes.

Transfer to a cooling rack. Top with chopped tomatoes, chopped onions, and fresh basil, if desired. Cut into individual pieces. Repeat the same grilling procedure for the two remaining balls of dough. Serve warm.

Get Inspired with Backyard Designs

Get inspired with these 10 beautiful backyard designs from the

twine/string
craft foam in several different colors
google eyes
magnets
paper clips
hot glue
scissors
2 hula hoops

DIRECTIONS

Tie a piece of string or twine about 2-feet long around one end of the stick. Depending on the type of magnet you have, it can be attached in different ways. Some can be tied to the string, or you can hot glue the magnet to a piece of craft foam and then attach the foam to the string.

Next, take the foam and trace around different fish shapes. If your child is old enough, allow him to cut out the fish shapes. They will want each fish to be about 8-inches long.

Next, an adult should hot glue a wiggle eye to each fish. Then, hot glue a paperclip on the same side of the fish (the clip can be bent to resemble a fish fin or attached to the mouth to look like a fish hook). Allow it to dry for a few minutes.

Not it’s time to head to the pool! Set each hula hoop in the water. Place the fish wiggle eye side up inside the hula hoops, and allow your child to fish for them by placing the magnet on the paperclip. The hula hoops help prevent the fish from floating all over the pool. This also could be played inside on the floor for younger children or on rainy days.

Decorate your Backyard with Lighting

There are many ways to decorate the backyard pool area without breaking the

Think of different ways to place inexpensive lanterns around the pool or hang a few strings of paper lanterns or lights throughout the patio to add just enough of a soft glow to make nighttime a fun time by the pool. Or, throw in a few floating lights to make the pool a little night oasis. You can even keep the white Christmas lights up year-round, too, to keep the soft glow.

How do you light your backyard pool area? INGREDIENTS

6 bags black tea (any kind)
¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1 orange
2 racks (about 2 pounds) baby back ribs
2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cut into ¾-inch chunks
½ cup mayo
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
1 lemon

DIRECTIONS

Empty 3 tea bags into a bowl and combine the loose tea with 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 teaspoons salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Grate in the orange zest. Pat the ribs dry and trim the membrane from the underside. Rub the tea mixture over the ribs; place in a roasting pan, meat-side up, and bring to room temperature, about 20 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 275 degrees F. Steep the remaining 3 tea bags in 2 cups boiling water, about 5 minutes. Discard the bags and stir in the remaining 2 tablespoons brown sugar and the juice of half the orange. Pour the mixture around the ribs in the pan. Cover with foil and roast until tender, about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, put the potatoes in a pot of salted water; bring to a simmer and cook until tender, about 5 minutes. Drain and cool slightly. Mix the mayonnaise and parsley in a large bowl. Grate in the zest of half the lemon; add the juice of the lemon half. Fold in the potatoes and add 11/2 teaspoons salt, and pepper to taste; refrigerate until ready to serve.

Remove the ribs from the oven and increase the temperature to 450. Pour the cooking liquid into a saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Baste the ribs with some of the liquid, then return to the oven and cook, uncovered, basting a few times, until the ribs are dark and glazed, 20 to 30 minutes.

When the remaining liquid in the saucepan is syrupy, add lemon juice to taste. Brush the ribs with the glaze. for Memorial Day weekend from www.simplyrecipes.com.

Put a new spin on an old grilling favorite with this stuffed hot dog recipe for Memorial Day weekend from www.simplyrecipes.com.
INGREDIENTS

1 tsp ketchup
1 tsp Dijon mustard
4 large hot dogs, knockwurst or kielbasa
½ oz cheddar cheese, cut into long sticks
2 tbsp chopped onion
1 cup refrigerated sauerkraut, drained, roughly chopped
4 slices bacon
vegetable oil
4 long hot dog buns

DIRECTIONS

Prepare your grill for direct medium high heat.

Mix together the ketchup and mustard in a small bowl. In a separate bowl, mix the sauerkraut with the chopped onion, set aside. Slice open the hot dogs, down the center, lengthwise, forming a deep pocket in each, but not cutting all the way through. Coat the inside of each hot dog with the mustard ketchup mixture.

Place a strip of cheese deep within the pocket of each hot dog. Top with sauerkraut and onions. Encapsulate the cheese at the ends with the sauerkraut mixture as well, so that no cheese is exposed (otherwise it will drip out when cooking).

Wrap a strip of bacon around each stuffed hot dog, securing with toothpicks at each end. Make sure you wrap tight enough so that the stuffing stays in, but not so tight so that when the hot dog expands will cooking the bacon would tear.

Coat your grill surface with vegetable oil so that the hot dogs don’t stick. If you have a grill screen (a screen with smaller holes so that small pieces of whatever you’re cooking don’t fall through the grill), you can use it, just coat it with vegetable oil first and pre-heat for a couple of minutes. Place the stuffed hot dogs on the grill, stuffing side down. Grill for 2 minutes, until the bacon on that side is cooked, turn the hot dogs a quarter turn and grill for a couple more minutes. Continue to grill for a few minutes each on all sides until the bacon is cooked. Cover the grill in between turnings to help with the cooking.

During the last minute of cooking, open up the hot dog buns and place them open-side down on the grill to lightly toast.

Remove the hot dogs and buns from the grill. Remove the toothpicks fro the hot dogs, place them in the buns and serve.

Pool Games – “Seahorse”

It’s the basketball favorite only water-themed and with a pool-safe

INGREDIENTS

1 pound fresh pizza dough
½ cup chocolate-hazelnut spread like Nutella
2 bananas, sliced

DIRECTIONS

Prepare outdoor grill for covered, direct grilling on medium-low.

Cut dough into 4 equal pieces. On one end of oiled cookie sheet, with fingertips, spread and flatten 1 piece of dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. (Edge does not need to be even.) On same cookie sheet, repeat with another piece of dough. Repeat with a second oiled cookie sheet and remaining dough.

Place all 4 pieces of dough, oiled side down, on hot grill grate. Cook 2 to 3 minutes or until grill marks appear on underside (dough will stiffen and puff).

With tongs, turn crusts over, remove from grill, and place, grilled side up, on work surface. Divide chocolate-hazelnut spread among crusts; spread evenly, leaving 1/2-inch border, and return to hot grill grate. Cover grill and cook pizzas 3 to 4 minutes longer or until undersides are evenly browned and cooked through.

Transfer to cutting board; arrange banana slices on tops of pizzas. Makes 8 servings.

Tips & Techniques

Recipe Tip: Look for fresh pizza dough in the dairy section of your supermarket, usually sold near the tortillas. (Frozen pizza dough is also available, but it takes several hours to thaw before it can be used.) Or you can purchase dough from a local pizzeria; they’ll usually sell it to you in 1-pound balls if you ask.

Once it’s created, find a special spot in a flower bed around the pool to showcase the kids’ creativity.
THINGS YOU’LL NEED

Newspapers, paper towels, vegetable oil and pastry brush
Rubber gloves
Cake pan or store bought molds
Plaster mix
Disposable bucket
Powdered paint mixes
Water
Disposable paint stirrers
Acrylic paints
Paintbrushes

HOW TO

Spread a layer of newspapers on the floor or ground for protection. Put on rubber gloves.

Brush the bottom of the cake pan or mold lightly with vegetable oil.

Pour dry plaster mix into the bucket (start with about 2 cups).

Add the powdered paint to achieve the desired color. About 1/2 cup will create an intense color; use less for a lighter shade.

Stir in water until the mixture is the consistency of thick pancake batter.

Pour the plaster mixture into the cake pan or mold. Using a paint stirrer, spread the mixture until level. Lightly tap the pan to shake out air bubbles.

Press shells, rocks, or other memorabilia you wish to save into the wet plaster.

Allow to set at least 24 hours.

Carefully turn the mold upside down and tap gently until the set plaster pops out.

Decorate with acrylic paint if desired.

Perfect Potato Salad

Watch these videos from Food Network to find the perfect potato salad

There’s a lot to get done before it’s time to peel back the pool covering, and not all of it requires a professional. Get the surrounding landscape ready in no time with these tips from Farmside Landscaping and Design (www.farmside.com) so everything is ready when pool season kicks off in a few weeks.
Outdoor Lighting: Reset automatic timers to coincide with Daylight Saving Time (Do the lights really need to come on so early now?). Check all the fixtures for bulb replacement and any damage that may have occurred during the winter.

Planted Beds: Weed, weed, weed (It’s time to get them photo ready!). Apply weed control as needed to fight against any potential new outgrowths. After the last frost (usually mid-May), you can begin planting, so start thinking about what annuals and perennials you may want to add to this year’s décor.

Patios: Take a walk around outside and look for any cracks, chipping or uneven surfaces that may have happened throughout winter and fix anything that poses a safety hazard (uneven surfaces may make it easier for kids to trip).

Trees and Shrubs: If you have any large greenery in the backyard, now’s the time to trim and shape, clear out dead or damaged limbs/branches and fertilize.

Once everything is cleaned and shaped up, and the frost is gone, lay some mulch for that extra touch and coloring. The backyard is sure to be in tip top shape in no time — perfect for the first swim of the season!

Renovations & New Ideas – Outdoor Kitchens

One of the best ways to spice up any poolscape is to add an outdoor

And grilling out is one of the perfect ways to spend a fabulous afternoon (or night) by the pool enjoying the backyard with the family. But with so many options on the market, how do you know what grill is best for your lifestyle, and how to grill correctly for that matter? CNN Money offers these five tips:

Don’t buy more grill than you need. Grills are priced in basic, mid and high-end ranges. Consumer Reports says that they are priced according to size, quality, convenience and features. Only opt for the features you really need not want.

Go for the best buy. Do your research, read consumer reports/reviews about models you’re interested in. And shop around. There is a lot of competition out there!

Take the wiggle test. See how solid and sturdy the grill is. Find a grill with plastic or wooden handles. Conduct a drop-lid test — does the grill stay lit if the lid is dropped quickly or it’s really windy outside? And pay attention to the warranty — don’t settle for anything less than 10 years.

Don’t botch the barbecue. Consumer Reports says there are a few mistakes you don’t want to make when grilling out — don’t forget to preheat the grill, keep the lid down at all times, don’t grill on dirty grates, and never run out of gas!

Get the must-have accessories. Think basting barbecue brushes, grips, tongs, wood pellets and a seasoned grate.

Decide if you’re using dyed hard boiled eggs you’ve already decorated with the kids or filling up the plastic ones with little candies, coins or perhaps a dollar bill or two.

Put letters on the eggs to spell out words. It’s always appropriate to turn a fun game into a learning session. Spell out words related to Easter on the eggs and provide prizes when whole words are completed.

Fill the plastic eggs with “Kid Coupons” good for things like: an extra hour of playtime, staying up later, free afternoon of chores, etc. Get creative and have fun!

Pick a color and stick to it. Assign each child a specific color egg and only they can find and keep that egg. That way everyone wins!

The options are endless for a family egg hunt. There’s nothing that says there’s only one way to have one, so think of things that your family enjoys and tie in an egg hunt themed around those hobbies. It’s sure to be a good time for everyone.

Remember: SAFETY FIRST! Don’t hide eggs near the pool unless an adult will be there to supervise. And tell the kids that there aren’t any eggs in that direction so they know the boundaries.

American Red Cross Month

March is American Red Cross Month, so familiarize yourself and your family

Cleaners fall into three main categories: Suction-side, Pressure-side and Robotic.
Suction-Side Cleaners: These automatic pool cleaners use the pool’s suction to vacuum the pool’s surface. They can hook into the suction system via the skimmer or a designated suction fitting on the pool wall.

Pressure-Side Cleaners: This cleaner is attached to the pressure side of the pool’s circulation system. The water that is pumped back into the pool propels these cleaners, which have their own hydraulic power plant inside.

Robotic Cleaners: These cleaners move around the pool via a pre-programmed pattern you enter or by sensing the size and shape of the pool. An internal microchip performs the movements.

Poolcenter.com offers this great side-by-side comparison of all the cleaners on the market that will help you decide which one falls into your price point and fits your cleaning needs: http://www.poolcenter.com/cleaners_poolstor.htm.

Oatmeal Lace Cookies and Cream

The leprechaun will be making a visit later this month, so be prepared and
