Who Are We? A Study Series

For the next year we will try to answer a very basic, but very difficult question: Who are we? Who are we as young adult Seventh-day Adventists? To answer this question we will focus on three elements of identity: the past, the present, and goals for the future. We will begin by examining our genealogical heritage as followers of God. We will explore what it meant for our spiritual ancestors to be chosen by God as a special person or group and how they responded to God’s call to be separate and peculiar. We will try to understand what it meant for them to be chosen by exploring why God chooses and what God expects of His chosen. We will also explore how people responded to God’s call. Sometimes it is easy to respond to the call, but as our spiritual ancestors’ testimony demonstrates, many times it is extremely difficult to say yes to God’s calling as chosen and to continue to enthusiastically remain committed to being chosen by God. And sometimes people said no. Is that okay? Or when God chooses, must the response always be yes? We will wrestle with these and other questions as we examine the experiences of the Israelites, Esther, the songs of David, Mary, Elizabeth, Ellen White, the first generation of Seventh-day Adventists and others over the next 13 Sabbaths.
Secondly, we will explore our present by wrestling with our current identity as Seventh-day Adventists in the 21st century. We will examine what it means to be a Seventh-day Adventist young adult today. As a denomination founded partly on the belief that they are a remnant people, a people chosen by God with a special message for the end times, what does it mean to be a part of this chosen group today? And what work has God chosen this group to do? Is this what God is calling you to do? If not, what do you do? To begin to answer these questions we will look at current SDA beliefs and theology.
Lastly, we will explore where we feel led to go in the future. We will ask questions about the future of Christianity in the United States and the future of the SDA church in both the United States but also in the world at large. What is God’s calling for the future and how might we begin to work towards those goals?
We hope that you will join us throughout the next year as we prayerfully and thoughtfully explore our identity as chosen and loved by God.

Death Valley Road Trip 2010

The Calimesa Young Families have invited us to once again join them on their trek to Death Valley. This is a great weekend away from the Inland Empire and a special time to fellowship with not only other Young Adults but with a larger segment of our local church. The weekend is filled with great worship, good food, hiking, and relaxation. Spots are limited so if you are interested you need to register at the Calimesa Church Death Valley 2010 registration website as soon as possible. The cost is $20 per person and will cover 4 meals (Friday supper, Sabbath breakfast and dinner, and Sunday breakfast). For more information you can check out the official web page for the event. 2nd Annual Battle of the Bands Party

The Battle of the Bands returns this year. Now that you have had a year to refine your image and perfect your songs you are ready to enter the musical arena. Put on the make-up, slip into those leather pants, spike your purple hair, and prove yourself worthy of being called the Band of the Year.

The party will start at 7PM October 31 at Summer's house. Bring your friends for a fun night of snacks, board games, and Rock Band 2. Prizes will be awarded for best dressed (musician) and the winners of the battle of the bands.

Mission Trip to Roatan

Giving Gifts This Sabbath

This Sabbath, Dec. 20, we will be delivering the gifts we wrapped last Friday night to the children at House of Decision. We will be leaving for the House of Decision at 10AM sharp so that we can be back for worship by 11:15AM. So come prepared to share God's love with the children and families at the House of Decision this Sabbath.

Death Valley Camping Trip

The Young Families at Calimesa have invited us to join them on their camping trip to Death Valley. Last year we went and had a great time hiking and hanging out with the Young Families and we are excited to go again this year. We need to get a fairly accurate count of who will go so we can reserve the correct number of camp sites. This means we need you to register by Dec. 20. Official registration begins this Sabbath and ends the following Sabbath, Dec. 20. Look for Raul Garcia or Sara Burkett under the tent on the lawn to officially sign up. If you want to go and won't be at church either of those Sabbaths to register contact Pastor Saul or Scott.

Roatan Mission Trip Meeting Friday Night

Hello Friends,
Things are really coming together wonderfully as we prepare for the Roatan Honduras Mission Trip scheduled for March 22-29, 2009. We have been in contact with various people and our teams with core leaders are all in place. We would like to call a time for prayer and discussion about our mission trip on Friday evening November 14, 2008 at 7pm in the church Garden Chapel. We apologize for any challenges on a Friday night but we feel that we must continue to move forward blanketed in prayer. We recognize that this message has taken a little longer than we would have liked but please accept our apologies. We feel as though we cannot in good faith ask for a deposit and a financial commitment until we get some clarification from the group. Pastor Saul, Scott Jones, and Pastor Isaac have been working on airfare and we have generated more questions than we have answers. We would like to meet for just 1 hour. The first half hour will be a season of prayer. The second half hour will be a conversation about our trip. The two main issues are:
1. The interest by several people to stay and tour longer after the mission trip.
2. Cost of airline ticket compared to the airport we depart and return from.

Battle of the Bands Fall Party November 1

Calimesa Wii Oplymics 9/27/08

Join the Young Adults and Young Families for Calimesa Wii Olympics. Individual and team events, where you will compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. Opening Ceremonies will begin at 7pm in the Fireside Room at church. This is the building across the parking lot at church. Please try to be on time as it will greatly help in dividing into teams and getting the Olympics underway. Events include tennis, boxing, golf, bowling, and baseball. No sports or video game skills are required to enjoy this great event. Don't knock the Wii until you've tried it!!! It is easy and tons of fun. After the Wii Olympics we will snacks, ice cream, and closing ceremonies. Invite your friends for a great evening of fun.

The Atonement Part II

Join us this Sabbath for a discussion about the atonement led by Dr. Jon Paulien, Dean of the School of Relgion at Loma Linda University. We started this converstation two Sabbaths ago when we asked "What is the meaning of the cross?" That Sabbath afternoon at the Campus Hill Church Dr. Desmond Ford shared his understanding of what happened on the cross and how Christ's death is central to our salvation. Also, over at the University Church, the Good News Tour talked about the character of God and offered a different view of atonement. So join us this Sabbath with your thoughts and questions as we explore the Biblical analogies used to describe what happened on the cross.

To catch up and read some brief reviews of both Dr. Ford's presentation and the Good News Tour see the Spectrum Blog. These are just two of several blogs and I highly recommend exploring the Spectrum Blog to find more information and thoughts on these issues.

Crystal Cove state park area is located between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach on Coast Highway (Highway 1), along coastal bluffs.

-If you are traveling south on PCH/Hwy 1 from Corona Del Mar use the first entrance to Crystal Cove Park on your right.

-If you are traveling north on PCH/Hwy 1 from Laguna Beach use the second entrance to Crystal Cove Park on your left.Once you enter the Park turn left and proceed to the furthest parking lot.

*If you get to laguna Beach you have gone too far!!!

The past 7 years have been marked by many changes in our world and in the life of our young adult group. But the one constant has been the impact that each of you has had in my life.

From the very beginning it was clear that you were a group of energetic and visionary thinkers just needing a forum to exercise your ideas and implement your visions. I thank you for the privileged of learning and growing with you together.

Throughout my pending transition to the young families, please know that the church leadership has prioritized the young adults in the transition. We are hopeful that in the near future we will have an announcement to make with regards to a new young adult pastor. Until then, I am more than confident that you will see your leadership team thrive as they prayerfully lead the ministry.

I happen to know that they have planned a thoughtful combination of social events, community building activities, and Sabbath School studies. Can I encourage you to continue to show the same level of commitment and support of your ministry by continuing to partake in everything we share together; support of friendship, the joy of community, and the other centered thinking of Jesus.

In a short while we will be sharing with you plans about the mission trip we are planning for Spring Break 2009 so stay tuned in for that.

The first 2 weeks of September I will be taking some time off. Then when I return, I will officially take over the Young Families Ministries. During the transition, Scott, Lauryn, and Sara will take leadership of this blog site.

Good News Tour and Desmond Ford on LLU Campus Sept. 5 & 6

What is the meaning of the cross? Two very different answers will be given in two seperate events taking place on the Loma Linda University campus on Sept. 5 & 6. Speakers for the Good News Tour will begin Friday night and continue through Sabbath at the Loma Linda University Church. Dr. Desmond Ford will be the guest speaker for the Richard Hammill Memorial Lecture hosted by the Adventist Today Foundation at the Campus Hill Church at 3PM with a follow-up lecture at 8PM. We will be leaving for Ensenada in a few hours. We will be working with Yugo Ministries at their Ensenada Outreach Center. Our primary goal will be to minister to the residents, take them supplies, and build a house for a family in need. Here's some info about where we are going...

About Ensenada Outreach Center

E.O.C. is located 4 miles south of Ensenada in the sleepy little pueblo of Chapultepec. It is a safe, enclosed campus within walking distance of the local beaches. In general, the community is clean and rich in Mexican culture. It is deeper into Mexico than most of the border cities YUGO ministers in, and is more representative of the Mexican culture. The climate is unusually temperate and comfortable for ministry throughout the year. Ensenada is situated along the west coast of Baja California, Mexico, approximately 60 miles south of the border. Ensenada is an area often overlooked for short-term missions because of its reputation for tourism. However, less than 1% of the 600,000 people of Ensenada are tourists, and less than 5% are evangelical Christians.

Although the score does tell who the best team was on Saturday night, the real winners are the kids...not only the Calimesa Kids but the kids that will benefit from their new home and a more safe future. Softball Game This Weekend!!!

We need everyone to come out and support us as we face the old fogeys. This should be a great game as they have experience to our raw talent and energy of the young adults! This is not only a fun game between the young family pigeon hawks vs. the young adult pigeons , but this will be our big fundraiser for our mission trips to Mexico and Honduras. We really need the support of you, your friends, your families to come out and have a great time.
7:30 PM Sundown Vespers. 8:00 PM Softball Game

There will be plenty of food, like pizza, burritos, popcorn, starbucks coffee for those that will need a pick me up, and nice refreshing snow cones!

We have secured great raffle prizes, including a weekend getaway to beautiful Lake Arrowhead.

There will also be a pick-up softball game for the gentlemen after the official battle between the Pigeon Hawks and Pigeons.

Again, everything starts at 7:30 pm in Loma Linda at the ballfields off Mountain View Ave at Entrada Del Parque Behind the Chinese Church.

Isaac Kim to Play for Pigeons in Summer Softball Classic

Colton, CA – The recent announcement that Isaac Kim has left the Young Adults and joined the Young Families has called into question Kim’s role in the up-coming Summer Softball Classic. As the new pastor for the Young Families, some believe Kim will immediately leave the Calimesa YA Pigeons and play for the Calimesa YF Pigeon Hawks. This move would deprive the Pigeons of the slugging Gold Glove first baseman and leave them little time to find a replacement. Scott Jones, GM and Manager for the Pigeons, believes that there is no controversy. “Isaac Kim is a member of the Pigeons until the end of August,” quipped Jones. “We plan to start Isaac at first base and for Isaac to make a major contribution in our anticipated victory over the Pigeon Hawks.”

However, when pressed further about the language of the contract and rumors that Kim will play for the Pigeon Hawks despite his obligations to the Pigeons through the end of August, Jones reluctantly revealed one way the Pigeon Hawks could deprive the Pigeons of their All-Star first baseman. “There is a clause in the contract that allows the Pigeon Hawks to buy out the rest of Isaac’s contract with us,” said Jones. “I believe the price would be in the $1000+ range, towards the mission fund. But that is something that we would have to sit down and discuss. Right now I am planning on Isaac playing for us.”

The potential loss of Kim would create a huge hole at first base and in the line-up for the Pigeons.

Pies in the face for Charity...bring your coins!

DO YOU WANT TO SEE ISAAC GET 5 PIES IN HIS FACE? NOOOOOOOO.

Here are the details. We are doing a change drive for our mission trip. We all have change that sits on our dresser or under our sofa (i just found $1.80.) We are in competition with the other children's SS classes to see who brings in the most change. Each class will be competing against the young adults.

If we beat a lower division class then we can pie a young family leader. If they raise more money than us...well then Isaac will get a pie in his face. So potentially Isaac could get 5 pies in his face...hmm...please bring your change!!!
