We’ll make sure all these features are in every project we deliver, as standard.

Competitor Analysis

I wanted to share with you a collection of email designs that brands over around the world are using for their current campaigns.

In terms of see what the competition are doing, analysing this, and using the ideas or inspiration for your next campaign is going to be very beneficial for you.

Review & Measure

All businesses need to review and measure their User Experience (UX) and Conversion rate optimisation (CRO) on an ongoing basis. The bottom line is make an improvement to your email template design, or even just an effective title, and you can see an increase or decrease in open rates, for example. You can measure this in your report dashboard, we use Mailchimp.

Over time, if you can measure which elements of your email design are working well, and remove those which aren’t. A/B test – and then pick a winner.

We are pleased to announce that Jim Callender has been gained qualification as a Google Digital Garage Expert. Jim has completed the whole online course for certification from Google and IAB Europe.

The background behind this is Google plans to boost SMEs digital skills with ‘Digital Garage Academy‘ which has everything from search to social media, to help you grow your business or career.

The Academy syllabus trains students on how SMEs can use digital and mobile channels to target potential customers in their areas and internationally, as well as make use of video and social channels to reach and interact with customers.

Jim said:

“I’ve already started using the best practice skills, that I learnt from this course on SEO, social and marketing. With these up to date skills endorsed by Google I know that our clients websites will be working harder for their businesses 24×7”

Eileen Naughton, Google’s managing director for UK and Ireland, said the Academy is a way to provide SMEs and entrepreneurs with access to Google’s products and expertise to help their businesses become a “truly digitally savvy enterprise”.

“Fewer than 30 percent of SMEs in the UK have an effective online presence, so Google aims to nurture digital expertise among the other 70 percent to help them reach new customers, manage marketing expenses and use data-driven consumer insights to help their businessgrow,”

My first computer, and my first coding was done on a Commodore 64 in circa 1984.

Now, as a parent I am keen for kids in schools to have the confidence to embrace web design and development techniques and languages.

Thankfully, in the UK we have some fantastic nationwide after school clubs, like Code Club, led by passionate local volunteers (often mums or dads themselves now) in primary schools.

The mission of Code Club is to give every child in the world the chance to learn to code by providing project materials and a volunteering framework.

Code Club run a variety of web based lessons and projects that allow keen students the opportunity to embrace the building blocks of the web, by building games, and interactive applications.

Learn by Doing

Code Club is nurturing the next generation of developers. Code Club is a free scheme that relies on volunteers around the UK to teach children aged between 9 and 11 coding skills. Since its introduction more than 800 Code Clubs have sprung up around the country.

You don’t have to be a genius to learn how to code, you have to be determined.

“What most schools don’t teach”

is a video starring some A-list web pioneers – Bill Gates (Microsoft), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), will.i.am (Entrepreneur & Musician), and Jack Dorsey (Twitter). They give tips and insight into the world of code and writing for the web.

When writing your web copy, who do you think of?

Many people struggle with content for their web site. They have problems visualising the brand message they want their articles to give.

The tricky part can be getting the correct tone and message for the web site content across to a prospective customer.

Web Vs. Print

What most web visitors do is glance at each new page, scan some of the text, and click on the first link that catches their interest or vaguely resembles the thing they’re looking for. – Steve Krug

Your web visitors are hunting for information or products. They make quick decisions without thinking.

In business, the products that have the best user experience usually end up winning. The products that are so intuitive that you don’t need to open up a manual to learn how to operate it. The ones that create the least amount of headaches and the greatest amount of joy end up getting the consumers attention and pocketbook. And to create great user experiences, businesses need to stay agile and stay responsive to change. They also need to be one step ahead of the curve.

In the eCommerce world, things like product selection, pricing, shipping, and customer service all play an important role in the customer experience. We see a company like Amazon really trying to stay ahead of the curve on shipping by their proposed use of drones to deliver small packages. In some parts of the US there is also Sunday delivery. For customer service, Zappos is a company that has built its reputation on delighting customers.

So we see how companies like Amazon are continuing to innovate in eCommerce. The space will continue to evolve in the direction of providing customers with more selection at better prices and faster shipping. But these are all logistics. There are other elements that play an important role in delighting users. Going forward they’ll continue to be important and companies certainly don’t want to be left behind. Let’s run through some of these important areas.

Retina Ready

Screen resolutions are only going to get better. We won’t be going backwards. As we look towards the future, companies will need to ensure their website is ready for these high resolution displays. Elements like product photos become a priority for needing an overhaul.

A survey by Instart Logic revealed that only 6% of online retailers are ready for retina devices. As retina devices become more popular, 100% of online retailers will need to adapt to this technology. People want to see visual detail of products, they don’t want pixelated images.

As a general rule, it’s best to shoot for image quality that is about 300 pixels per inch.

Mobile

Mobile commerce is another trend that is here to stay. eMarketer estimates that in the year 2014, one fifth of all eCommerce sales will take place on a mobile device.

By now all stores should be optimized for mobile. A visitor should easily be able to view images and make purchases via their phone or tablet. There should be no pinch and zoom required, all images and buttons should have even proportions, and users should be able to find products quickly with their prices clearly labeled.

Users shouldn’t have to settle for a downgraded experience when they browse on mobile. It should work just as well as it does on desktop.

Personalization

The future of eCommerce will have more personalization. David Selinger, CEO of RichRelevance says, “personalization will be the differentiating factor in e-commerce and digital commerce going forward, especially for multichannel retailers and new entrants online.”

In some industries it will be more critical than others. Fashion, for example, will benefit greatly from personalization. An algorithm being able to offer accurate suggestions on what to buy will overtime replace personal shoppers.

Rams began studies in architecture and interior decoration at Wiesbaden School of Art in 1947. Soon after in 1948, he took a break from studying to gain practical experience and conclude his carpentry apprenticeship. He resumed studies at Wiesbaden School of Art in 1948 and graduated with honours in 1953 after which he began working for Frankfurt based architect Otto Apel. In 1955, he was recruited to Braun as an architect and an interior designer. In addition, in 1961, he became the Chief Design Officer at Braun until 1995.

Rams introduced the idea of sustainable development and of obsolescence being a crime in design in the 1970s. He asked himself the question: is my design good design? The answer formed his now celebrated ten principles.

Good design:

Is innovative – The possibilities for progression are not, by any means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for original designs. But imaginative design always develops in tandem with improving technology, and can never be an end in itself.

Makes a product useful – A product is bought to be used. It has to satisfy not only functional, but also psychological and aesthetic criteria. Good design emphasizes the usefulness of a product whilst disregarding anything that could detract from it.

Is aesthetic – The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products are used every day and have an effect on people and their well-being. Only well-executed objects can be beautiful.

Makes a product understandable – It clarifies the product’s structure. Better still, it can make the product clearly express its function by making use of the user’s intuition. At best, it is self-explanatory.

Is unobtrusive – Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s self-expression.

Is honest – It does not make a product appear more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.

Is long-lasting – It avoids being fashionable and therefore never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years – even in today’s throwaway society.

Is thorough down to the last detail – Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the consumer.

Is environmentally friendly – Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It conserves resources and minimizes physical and visual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product.

Is as little design as possible – Less, but better – because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity.
