It’s been a long time coming, but a good friend (Mat Carpenter) and I have finally got around to getting our landing page (somewhere users can sign up for updates on our project) designed, coded and launched. “What for?” did I hear you ask? For our what was very secret iPhone application of course!

The app is going to be something everyone with an iPhone will like and with any luck, use daily! It will allow users a new way to take photos, create memories, and share those memories with your friends and family like never before, all from the palm of your hand. It’s going to be perfect for Alex & I’s travels around the world, which start in just a couple of months!

I’d really appreciate your support for this, so if you have an iPhone, please head on over to CapptureApp.com and leave your email address so we can email you when we’re; a) looking for beta testers before the apps official launch and b) so we can tell you when Cappture is available on the App Store!

To give you a little taster of the app, I’ll leave you with a teaser image. Enjoy!

So, this is all going ahead; we are travelling! Our journey begins when we give up our apartment and the majority of our belongings on the 30th July 2012. We'll be spending our last night in Melbourne at the Melbourne Tullamarine International Airport hotel - the same place we spent our very first night here.

Instead of flying straight back to London, we've decided we'd split our trip back up a little, so instead of 32 hours continuous travel we have a 12 hour direct flight to Bangkok (Thailand) where we will be spending a week, and then another 12 hour direct flight from Bangkok to London. We'll arrive back in London on the 8th of August, and travelling up to Manchester on the 13th. It cost a little more, but we're super excited to see a little bit of Asia before travelling Europe and America!

So, this is all going ahead; we are travelling! Our journey begins when we give up our apartment and the majority of our belongings on the 30th July 2012. We’ll be spending our last night in Melbourne at the Melbourne Tullamarine International Airport hotel – the same place we spent our very first night here.

Instead of flying straight back to London, we’ve decided we’d split our trip back up a little, so instead of 32 hours continuous travel we have a 12 hour direct flight to Bangkok (Thailand) where we will be spending a week, and then another 12 hour direct flight from Bangkok to London. We’ll arrive back in London on the 8th of August, and travelling up to Manchester on the 13th. It cost a little more, but we’re super excited to see a little bit of Asia before travelling Europe and America!

This Bangkok trip also marks our first Airbnb experience. For those of you not aware of Airbnb, it is a website that allows homeowners to list their properties, spare bedrooms or couches and travellers to search those properties, spare bedrooms and couches and rent them; usually anything from 1 night to several months. Airbnb is how we plan on making our travelling possible, as generally you can stay in an apartment complete with internet, kitchen and sometimes even bikes (without hosts) for cheaper than a hotel room – if you’re happy to stay with a host (i.e. someone else is living there and you have their spare bedroom) you can often get rooms at quarter of the price of a cheap to average hotel room. You should definitely check Airbnb out, and please do register using our referral link – you’ll help us pay for our next trip!

Our first experience using Airbnb was fantastic. We’ve secured a week in a brand new hotel-style apartment rated 5* for just $48 a night; that’s less than what we’re paying in Melbourne with a 12 month contract! The one bedroom apartment has everything we need, is close to all public transport, and is on the 22nd floor with awesome city views. We even have the internet, cable tv, gym, steam room and a 6th floor infinity pool and jacuzzi with more awesome city views.

Our hosts, Mitch & Mam, have provided us with loads of useful information about where we are staying and how to get places, what to see and what days the markets are on. They’ve even offered translation services if we get lost and need to tell the taxi drivers where to go! If you’re planning on visiting Bangkok, be sure to check out Mitch & Mam’s properties.

We’re incredibly excited to start our travels, but equally as sad to leave Melbourne behind – we really have fallen in love with the place, and we will definitely be back!

We had started to prepare for Alex's permanent residence visa here in Australia (for those of you that are not aware, I'm an Australian Citizen so am eligible to sponsor Alex to stay) which is a stressful and ridiculously expensive process in itself... but then something that has been on our minds since we first met cropped up; travelling.

Hi everyone! This past week has been a roller coaster. We had started to prepare for Alex’s permanent residence visa here in Australia (for those of you that are not aware, I’m an Australian Citizen so am eligible to sponsor Alex to stay) which is a stressful and ridiculously expensive process in itself… but then something that has been on our minds since we first met cropped up; travelling.

From the first day we met we both told each other we would like to travel, and in just 16 months we have been to places all over England, Scotland (Glasgow & Edinburgh), France (Paris) and covered three states in Australia (Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales). We stopped and thought long and hard about our options non-stop for about 72 hours, at the cost of very unproductive days and sleepless nights.

We came to the conclusion that, due to the restrictions Alex would encounter in Australia if we were to apply for her visa on-shore, and the cost of living here and travelling at the same time, we would head back to the UK and base ourselves there whilst we travel some other parts of the world. If we were to apply for Alex’s visa on Australian shores, it would leave her unable to work for 6-9 months, and unable to leave the country for any longer than 3 months at a time for the next 4 years until Australian Citizenship was acquired.

So, our short-term and long-term plan is to leave Melbourne in August 2012, base ourselves in England for the next couple of years whilst we travel, and then apply for Alex’s permanent residence visa for Australia in England, allowing us to completely bypass all of those evil restrictions that would have cropped up if were applying on Aussie shores.

During our time based in England, we plan to visit the following cities:

USA:

Honolulu, HI

San Francisco, CA

Los Angeles, CA

Las Vegas, NV

Austin, TX

Chicago, LS

New York City, NY

Europe:

Belfast (Northern Ireland)

Dublin (Ireland)

Lisbon (Portugal)

Madrid (Spain)

Barcelona (Spain)

Zurich (Switzerland)

Istanbul (Turkey)

Minsk (Belarus)

Moscow (Russia)

Helsinki (Finland)

Stockholm (Sweden)

Malmo (Sweden)

Hamburg (Germany)

Berlin (Germany)

Frankfurt (Germany)

Munich (Germany)

Prague (Czech Republic)

Vienna (Austria)

Krakow (Poland)

Warsaw (Poland)

Budapest (Hungary)

Amsterdam (Netherlands)

Brugge (Belgium)

Brussel (Belgium)

Zagreb (Croatia)

Varazdin (Croatia)

Our trip in total would cover 18 countries and 32 cities and we hope to cover all of these by 2014, then save some money whilst considering our options, and for the possibility of emigrating overseas and hopefully buying a house soon after!

Have you been to any of the above places? Or is there anywhere we haven’t listed that you think we should go to? Let us know! We’re also wanting to meet people and make new friends on our journeys, if you live in any of the above places and fancy a coffee or beer, let us know. We’d love to meet you!

We decided to go to Phillip Island which is only an hour and 45 minutes away from where we live. Phillip Island is known for its rather cute Little Penguins.

Our good friend Jade suggested we should take a little road trip as she was allowed to take her car from her nanny job for the whole weekend. We decided to go to Phillip Island which is only an hour and 45 minutes away from where we live. Phillip Island is known for its rather cute Little Penguins. So we headed off on the road as poor Callum had to listening to Jade and Alex’s terrible singing for over an hour we arrived on Phillip Island.

First stop was the Koala Conservation Centre! We walked around and tried to spot the very inactive koalas. Once we had seen as much as we could we headed out again to Churchill Island Heritage Farm where we was hoping to milk a cow and learn how to throw a boomerang; but naturally all the little children got there first and we were much more interested in Sophie the horse and Katie the baby cow. We enjoyed the farm life for just over an hour and headed out for some fish and chips.

Later that night it was time for the Little Penguins, which we had to wait for… for 2 hours. Jade chose the worst seat next to a rather large group of parents and their rather naughty children. She spent the past 2 hours having someone shout “LUKE! TALIA! STOP IT NOW!” down her ears and children climbing over her and kicking her in the face. Not fun. But it was soon worth it as we watched the Little Penguins come onto the shore and waddle there way up the sand. After a slightly scary drive home in the dark concerned kangaroos were going to jump out as us, we made it home and had a lovely day at Phillip Island.

For Valentines day we went a little out of our food comfort zone and dined at one of Melbourne’s top restaurants, Embrasse Restaurant. The food was absolutely beautiful, and we had 6 courses of it! Some of the things on the fixed degustation menu included Ox Cheek, Pork Belly and Squid Ink Beef, finished off nicely with some fancy Victorian cheese. It didn’t come cheap, but the whole experience was more than worth it and never again will we say that those tiny meals you see on Masterchef would never feel you up… It was the most full we had been in a long time!

Then returned home for some of Callum’s cooking which went badly wrong, and we ended up ordering a pizza! We also have a new addition to the family; Butters the mouse, which was a birthday present from Callum. Thank you to everyone for the cards and presents. I love you all!

As of the 5th, I have decided to go back self-employed for a few different reasons; for the freedom, for the opportunity for Alex to find part-time work at weekends (which isn’t only easier to find, but quite often pays more for “non-standard work hours”) and also because I love the challenge of working on different projects all the time (and finding those projects!).
