By John A. Wilson

It may be easy to understand that structural issues in the body may have a domino effect, one problem perpetuating and new problem, and that problem perpetuating yet another. The extent to which this is true is likely to be overlooked though, because it is not overt in nature. Having owned quite a few older cars, I am well aware of what it is like to drive one that has its struts, the springs that absorb shock, completely worn out. As it is usually fairly expensive to replace, and probably not worth it in an old car that is not a valuable car, many of us will drive them around without fixing them. One can probably drive a car around indefinitely without replacing the struts, it is not essential to the functioning of the car. Nevertheless, it is unpleasant when one hits a bump or pothole, very jaring. What does eventually become apparent is that it leads to other suspension issues in and around the axle. This makes perfect sense. It may not be worth fixing on an old junker, but our bodies are worth far more than any car. Our arches, our hips, our shoulders and our neck all receive shock from the efficient functioning of many areas in our body. One may have a hard time connecting the inefficiency of their arches or ankles to their neck or shoulder problem, but just as even one shot shock absorber in a car sends shock through the whole car, so does one restriction in the body send shock through the whole body. This is on of the fundamental principles of Rolfing. Restriction can send the organism into a greater degree of disorder.

This being said, we are not cars, we are not machines. We are complex innervated beings, with a much higher degree of adaptability than any machine yet created. If we have a restriction that causes an unnecessary degree of shock, we have ways of adapting to that by finding other ways of dissipating shock and allowing movement. One thing that is important to note is that energy, including kinetic energy, does not just disappear with restricted motion, it has to be dissipated somehow. Swinging the arms when walking allows for the dissipation of kinetic energy when walking, when that is restricted the neck and shoulders receive shock with each step. More so, the energy that needs to be dissipated when walking may express itself through excessive hip swinging, or many other avenues. If hip movement is restricted in one direction, it may express itself in noticeably excessive movement in the other directions that are not restricted. Likewise, if the hips are restricted it may involve excessive arm swinging when walking. Have you ever seen someone who appears to be propelling themselves with their arms when walking? Graceful movement comes from optimal movement, just what is necessary and possible, and only what is necessary, no more-no less.

While watching a documentary on the early solar system, it was illustrated that our current model of the movement of bodies both large and small were once far more erratic in our neighborhood. There were many collisions, and we had a lot more planets and planetesimals that did not make it to the current day without being destroyed. They seemed to have settled down into a more harmonious flow as time went on. How is this possible? They illustrated by putting a bunch of metronomes on a suspended platform, and setting them off at different times, but set to the same frequency. They began to synchronize, first in groups, as the platform moved with the motion of all the combined metronomes. Eventually they all synchronized and stayed synchronized. This will occur weather it is two metronomes or twenty metronomes.

This will happen as long as the plaform they share is allowed to swing freely with the disordered movement of the metronomes. If the movement of the platform is restricted, they will all go into disorder and will not synchronize. It was explained in the documentary that the shared platform the metronomes were placed on is analogous to gravity commonly affecting the planets in our solar system, the force that allows the planets and other heavenly bodies to find order and resonance. The term Pythagoras coined “music of the spheres” comes to mind. There is a harmony that is evoked when objects synchronize. As with the planets and metronomes, we have the ability to find harmony of movement and synchronization when allowed to do so. If there is restriction, it is likely to lead ot disharmony and disorder. Because of our ability to adapt to life situations, we will find some way of functioning, but it may not be an optimal way of functioning.

Allowing for a higher degree of order and synchronization to take place in the body is the goal of Rolfing, striving to assist in a more harmoniously functioning individual.

Often we think of stress as coming from a painful life event, but it can also manifest in a wide array of physical symptoms such as fatigue, pain, allergies, mood changes, insomnia, thyroid disorders, low blood sugar, bloating and bowel changes. These symptoms can signal that something is out of balance in your body and physiology.

Functional medicine determines how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root cause of disease for each individual. Most often, stress is a component of a medical concern or diagnosis.

On July 9 from 5:30 p.m.-6:15 p.m., I will discuss how stress can manifest physically and emotionally in your body and functional/integrative approaches to balance and restore your health.

There are many ways that garbage comes into our bodies, especially through poor lifestyle. It can also get stuck in our bodies if our detox systems are not working efficiently. Over time, it creates a “fiery mess” called inflammation which can lead to a long list of chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and even dementia.

What drives this inflammation?

Stress, inactivity, poor diet and toxins.

What happens when the garbage comes into your body? How does your body cope? Your body relies on your colon, liver, kidney and skin to process and remove the garbage. Now let’s think about it. This means you need healthy gut bacteria, good digestion and elimination. You need proper detoxification going on in your liver and kidneys. If you are not exercising regularly, then your colon, kidney and skin are not helping you remove these toxicants.

If your organ systems are not working properly, then you’ve got a lot of garbage coming into your body and not getting out and over time, an imbalance is going to occur, leading to inflammation and chronic disease.

Join me next Tuesday, July 2 from 5:30-6:15 PM at 5211 McIntyre St. and I will discuss evidence-based lifestyle modification and natural solutions to help decrease inflammation and support your cardiometabolic health. Please RSVP to peaceandcalmmamadoc@gmail.com | Worshop fee: $15

Reverse and Prevent Signs of Aging with Microneedling

Microneedling, also called Collagen Induction Therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure that treats wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores and melasma. This effective treatment utilizes the body’s own natural healing mechanisms for natural, beautiful results with minimal downtime. In a 2008 study, skin treated with four microneedling sessions spaced one month apart, produced a 400% increase in collagen and elastin 6 months after treatment. Collagen and elastin production is critical for plump, tight and smooth skin but collagen stimulation can also reverse sun damage, discoloration and melasma.

So What Is Microneedling?

It is the insertion of very fine, short needles using a motorized tool to circulate the needles very quickly around the surface of the skin . This creates hundreds of microscopic puncture wounds in the top layer of the skin. These tiny pin pricks, or micro-injuries, stimulate the body’s natural wound healing process resulting in cell turnover and increased collagen and elastin production.

Unlike ablative laser treatments that remove the top layer of skin using heat and light, microneedling keeps the epidermis intact and undamaged, resulting in less discomfort and fewer side effects.

Benefits of Microneedling

In a 2009 study 100% of acne-scarred participants saw marked improvement and reduction in scars. For very deep scarring, a more advanced microneedling treatment may be necessary. Other benefits are the appearance of pore shrinkage due to the stimulation of collagen in and around the pore causing the skin to plump and product penetration. The tiny punctures act like little channels allowing collagen boosting topical products to penetrate better and work more effectively.

With its ability to trigger the generation of new skin cells, microneedling is an effective skin rebuilder and healing modality that has short term and long term benefits. With just a few sessions you will notice reduced fine lines, crow’s feet, deep wrinkles (especially on the forehead) and discoloration.

Microneedling is available seven days a week at Calm Spirit with our Certified Microneedling Therapists

According to Oriental medicine, treatment is directed toward clearing the nasal passages, supporting the immune system and strengthening the systems of the body to prevent allergic reactions from recurring. Sufferers of seasonal allergies also find relief using acupuncture and traditional medicine.

What Are Seasonal Allergies?

Commonly called hay fever or allergic rhinitis, a seasonal allergy is an allergic reaction to an environmental trigger that is typically only present for part of the year, such as spring or fall. Pollens that are spread by the wind are usually the main cause of seasonal allergies. People who are allergic to pollens are also often sensitive to dust mites, animal dander, and molds.

Spring is traditionally the main season when allergies blossom because of new growth on trees and weeds. Fall ushers in a whole different set of blooming plants, and is also a time of increased leaf mold, so is the second-worst season for allergy sufferers. Airborne mold spores can be found almost year round, along with other common allergens such as dust, dust mites, and animal dander.

About 26 million Americans endure chronic seasonal allergies, while the number of people with milder symptoms may be as high as 40 million, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

Seasonal allergies are caused by the body’s hypersensitivity to substances in the environment. Symptoms primarily involve the membrane lining the nose, causing allergic rhinitis, or the membrane lining the eyelids and covering the whites of the eyes, causing allergic conjunctivitis.

While there are many medications to treat the symptoms of seasonal allergies, these treatments can cause unwanted side effects, such as drowsiness and immune system suppression as well as an over-reliance on medications. These side effects have motivated many people to search for alternative approaches like acupuncture and Oriental medicine to manage their allergies.

How Acupuncture Treatments Provide Relief from Allergies

According to Oriental medicine, allergic rhinitis is related to Wind and a deficiency of the protective Wei Qi.Wei Qi is the energy that flows at the surface of the body as a protective sheath and is responsible for resistance to colds and other respiratory infections. People with a deficiency of Wei Qi catch colds easily and are more susceptible to allergens.

When treating with acupuncture, underlying imbalances within the body are addressed. A treatment plan is developed to relieve the acute symptoms of allergic rhinitis while also treating the root problems that are contributing to the body’s reaction to allergens. Treatments often include dietary modification, the use of specifically chosen herbal formulas, and acupuncture.

Seasonal acupuncture treatments just four times a year also serve to tonify the inner organ systems and can correct minor annoyances before they become serious problems. If you experience seasonal allergies, now is the time to schedule an appointment. Call for a consultation today!

After a long, cold winter, spring has finally sprung! There is an excitement in the air, and with it comes an increase in mental and physical energy. Just as plants and animals emerge from hibernation and dormancy, our bodies emerge from the dark winter and embrace the season of creativity, growth and renewal. It is the time of new beginnings and a fresh start to your health and wellness. As the creative mind is activated, you may find yourself organizing, planning, or spring cleaning. It’s a natural time to clear out clutter accumulated from the winter months. We do this in our homes and environments making space for new items and projects. In Eastern Medicine, it is believed that the body goes through a similar cleansing process and may be susceptible to illness and emotional stress due to weather fluctuations and the release of built up energy and toxins through the liver.

This time of year is affectionately called “mud season” in the high country as the snow melts away causing a dampness in the earth and messy mud everywhere! According to Ayurveda, a system of health and wellness developed in ancient India, we experience an internal mud season as the body melts and flushes out what is no longer needed physically, emotionally and spiritually. Because of this cleansing process, extra heat and fat can accumulate in the blood causing a build up of mucus, phlegm and water trapped in the tissues. This leads to a thickness in the blood and lymph and may cause lethargy, colds, sinus infections, allergies, puffiness around the eyes and cheeks, acne breakouts, and swollen feet or hands. By using the principles of Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine, we can shift our diets and personal habits to better support our body’s natural ability to regenerate. I have been working and implementing these principles personally and with my clients over the past 15 years and find it particularly helpful for supporting digestion, healing skin issues, balancing emotional health and stress management.

To look and feel your best incorporate these holistic tips for radiant health this spring.

Lifestyle

Exercise, sweat and breathe deeply as much as you can to help clear out your system physically and energetically. As you move your body, focus on deep breathing to oxygenate your cells, refresh the lymphatic system, open the airways, and balance the heavy and wet qualities of spring. Allow plenty of time for long walks, connecting to your body and breath, as you soak in the beauty of nature. Partake in any type of exercise that is enjoyable and fun for you. Or, consider trying a new activity to awaken the mind and unlock your vitality. There is a forward momentum and expansiveness to the heart and mind this time of year and, as the weather warms up, more blood moves to the extremities helping us have energy and motivation to move. I invite you to connect to your own inner healer and sprout new ideas for personal development and growth.

Last spring, one of my holistic doctors recommended Qigong to balance, strengthen and raise my energy as my body was adjusting to menopause and healing from cancer. Qigong translates to “the art of cultivating vital energy”. I incorporated Qigong into my morning practice and have been impressed with its balancing and reviving effects.

People are reporting incredible health benefits and completely healing chronic diseases from regular Qigong. It is a Chinese system of gentle, yet effective exercises that applies ancient wisdom, modern science and the mind’s creative power to transform lives from disease to health and well-being. After my diagnosis, my oncologist suggested yoga and meditation as they have been proven to improve survival rates of cancer patients. This motivated me to dive deeply into my spiritual practice with conviction and persistence. I found specific meditations, mudras and prayers to be extremely helpful at reducing my fear and anxiety and embracing my power as a co-creator of my life and wellbeing.

I am thrilled to be co-leading Awaken Your Vitality- A Spring Wellness Workshop, with Alexandra Ogsbury where we will dive into these simple but powerful practices for transformation. To learn more click here

Nutrition

Raw or lightly steamed greens and juiced vegetables help pacify heavy, thick, stuck energy of spring. Chlorophyll, the chemical that produces the green color in leaves, builds prana, or vital life force, keeping the body light and energized. Broccoli, beets, brussel sprouts, cabbage, radishes, sprouts, asparagus, microgreens and cilantro also help your liver process toxins more effectively. Bitter greens like dandelion, beet greens and arugula help to cool the system, support the liver, and are said to cool fiery emotions. Blueberries help protect the liver from damage and are loaded with antioxidants and packed with Vitamins A, C, E which help fight free radical damage, and protect the skin from premature aging. If you are experiencing puffiness, diuretics may be helpful to break up congestion, reduce fats in the blood and release excess water. Some foods with diuretic properties include celery, cayenne, aloe vera, radishes, parsley, and arugula. Avoid heavy, thick, foods like dairy, white flour, meat, refined sugar and alcohol to support the liver.

Skin Care

The skin, our largest organ, is known as the 7th channel of elimination and is a mirror for internal imbalances. You may experience a cool dampness on the skin’s surface or puffiness around the cheeks and eyes as this mimics the thick, muddy internal environment. An increase in oil production and moisture in the air can lead to unwanted breakouts and heat and toxins being released may cause redness and irritation. A professional exfoliation treatment will remove dead winter cells, help prevent breakouts and softens rough skin. Pumpkin enzyme peels, lactic acid or microdermabrasion treatments are ideal this time of year to remove dead cells making room for new, young, healthy cells. These treatments stimulate collagen and elastin for a tighter smoother and more even complexion. It’s best to do peels and resurfacing treatments now before the intense sun of summer is upon us. To learn more about resurfacing treatments at Calm Spirit click here

Facials help nourish, cleanse and re-hydrate skin dried out from indoor heating and poor circulation. Restore a healthy spring glow to the skin with the Blueberry Detox Facial. It’s an effective organic treatment designed for spring stimulation and resurfacing. Paprika in the Blueberry Detox Firming Peel gets the blood and lymph flowing helping to move toxins from the surface of the skin to be eliminated through the lymph and liver. The skin is nourished with superfoods in the potent Citrus & Kale C+E Masque to enhance detoxing and rejuvenation. This is a truly impressive combination which leaves a noticeable improvement in the appearance of skin and is our go to treatment for flawless, glowing complexion. This treatment is beneficial for all skin types except rosacea and very sensitive skin. The Blueberry Detox Facial is only available until the end of April. Schedule your appointment at Calm Spirit now at 303-467-5337 .

Although this time of year has its health challenges, it is rich with possibilities. We can lay the foundation for our health and wholeness by embracing the wet, muddy terrain of mud season with an intuitive guidance. Get outside, enjoy the less intense sunshine on your skin, let your winter cares melt away and use this time to plant the seeds of success into the fertile soils of your body and consciousness.

When a top athlete like Kobe Bryant tweets a picture of acupuncture needles in his leg, you know it’s time to consider how acupuncture and Oriental medicine can help improve your sports performance. Studies have shown that acupuncture has measurable effects on the flow of blood to certain areas of the body, which could in turn boost athletic performance.

One such study conducted at the Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine involved athletes running 5,000 meters, and afterwards sitting for acupuncture treatments before they had a chance to catch their breath. The heart rates of the athletes who received the treatments recovered more quickly than those in the control group.

Another study published in the American Journal of Acupuncture measured the effects of acupuncture on anaerobic threshold and work capacity during exercise in healthy young males. Researchers found that individuals in the acupuncture treatment group had higher maximal exercise capacity and were able to perform higher workloads at the onset of blood lactate accumulation (OBLA) than individuals in the placebo group. The individuals that received acupuncture also had lower heart rates. Acupuncture can increase exercise capacity, according to researchers from the University of California. Study subjects biking on a test ramp were able to work harder after receiving an acupuncture treatment. Their systolic blood pressure also declined, indicating more efficient blood circulation.

Are you looking for your next “runner’s high”? Scientists from the Neuroscience Research Institute in Chinafound that acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins, which can reduce the sensation of pain. Instead of trying to exercise and get fit with a philosophy of “no pain, no gain,” you may be able to use acupuncture to experience less pain while you pursue your fitness goals.

If you suffer a setback in your fitness routine, call for more information about treatment options

A question I receive often is “What exactly is a chemical peel and how will it help?.” Chemical resurfacing or a chemical peel is the use of chemical solutions to exfoliate the surface of the skin, promote cell turnover, and induce desquamation (shedding of the skin). Chemical resurfacing improves over all skin tone, decreases pigment, fine lines, wrinkles and helps pores appear smaller. Chemical resurfacing stimulates the production of collagen and elastin which create firmer more taut skin.
What to expect – During the treatment you may experience temporary stinging or flushing of the skin. You may also feel tightening of the skin which will last for next few days. Not all peels create actual “peeling” or desquamation, however they are still working. You can expect to see actual “peeling” on days 2-5 post treatment. For the following three days after your treatment plan to have limited direct sun contact on the treatment area and apply sunscreen liberally when going outdoors. You’ll be given complete after-care instructions at the conclusion of your treatment.

In addition, our biological clock (circadian rhythm) which lets our body know when to sleep and when to be awake is also disrupted with seasonal changes. Varying sleep patterns often leads to feelings of depression, too.

How do you know if you are depressed? Symptoms of depression include loss of interest or focus, fatigue, changes in eating habits and excessive sleeping, among many others. Depression can cause people to lose pleasure from daily life, complicate other medical conditions, and if serious enough lead to suicide. As with many illnesses, early treatment is more effective and helps prevent the likelihood of serious recurrences.

Acupuncture can offer effective, holistic care! One of the best ways to treat depression is through regular acupuncture treatments. It can bring the body to a more balanced state, help the body release “feel-good”endorphins and even prevent other medical complications.

Acupuncture is a wonderful addition to Western medical treatments. And for those who wish to bypass prescription drugs, treating depression with acupuncture not only has a positive and holistic effect, it avoids the potential side effects of traditional medication.

Full Moon Awakening

The phase of the Full Moon is a powerful healing time both physically and mentally, but is often overlooked in our busy modern lives. The light reflected by the sun is at its fullest as is the opportunities to recharge, reflect, and renew our energy fields. Full Moon rituals and ceremonies are commonplace in many cultures, as people are naturally called to honor and connect to the natural world and cosmic forces. There is a soothing sense of awe as we see a bright full moon rising on the horizon or brilliantly shining high in the night sky. It is a sense of hope, of clarity, of mysticism that one receives as they remember they are part of something much bigger than themselves.

Women especially have had deeper connections to the moon through their monthly cycles and natural intuition. Our bodies are made mostly of water, and like the tides, we are affected by the phases of the moon. Children and adults tend to have more energy during the full moon and animals become more active. Left unchecked, this extra energy can manifest as an increase in behavior problems, emergency room visitors, and crime rates. The energy of the full moon may have you feeling more angry, reactive, agitated, ungrounded, worrisome, or unlogical but it can also be a time of great creativity, physical energy, joy, excitement and intuition. We can alleviate the negative feelings and increase the positive feelings by channeling this excessive energy through ritual, meditation, journaling and by practicing consciousness. Consciousness is being aware of your own thoughts, feelings and actions and making choices from the present moment instead of from past experiences or future worries. An expanded consciousness sees unlimited possibilities and potentials in every situation.

The Full Moon is the perfect time to slow down and make space to nurture and care for your yourself. You really are your number one priority. There is no one else is who is going to love and care for yourself as much as you do. You are incharge of your self- care and making that a priority is important for your wellness and to help you show up as the beautiful, kind, creative, powerful being you were meant to be. You are 100% in charge of how you think, feel, and react and if we are stressed and in the constant fight or flight response, than we are more likely to be in survival mode instead of flourishing and thriving. When we are in survival mode we often feel tense, fearful, angry, frustrated, or overwhelmed. This stress can manifest in the skin as inflammation, acne, rosacea, hives, rashes, digestive issues or other pain or dis-ease in the body, or feeling depressed, unsatisfied or unsafe.

You can use the energy of the full moon to supercharge your intentions and create a powerful ritual that anchors your goals and dreams in your subconscious and then releasing them into the universe. What you focus on grows, and how you feel activates the laws of attraction to draw in people, experiences, opportunities, and things into your life that have a similar vibration. Give yourself the ultimate gift of self love this full moon by honoring you. Tune into your emotions. What has been bothering you lately? What feels out of balance or out of alignment with your truest self? Are there thoughts or feelings from the past that keep playing out in your mind or relationships? Allow the light of the moon to illuminate your fears and limiting beliefs, bringing them to the surface to be washed away by your compassion and self affirmation. This is deeply cleansing for your internal energy system, known as the chakras, and recharges the energetic biofield that surrounds your body. Then begin to think about your goals and your dreams. Take time to visualize your heart’s deepest desires. Imagine yourself living out your dreams… getting the dream job, meeting your soulmate, being in perfect health, or parenting with ease and grace. How would you feel if this were happening right now? Embrace it, feel it, and know it is possible! You can write these down and revisit them daily, especially on the next full moon.

The Full Moon Facial was designed to help assist you in connecting with your highest self and unlimited possibilities in the universe while deeply relaxing and nourishing your entire being. We begin with a relaxing and toning facial massage which will help the body switch from the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) to the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest). The parasympathetic system is connected to the face and we can stimulate it through relaxing facial massage techniques and acupressure. When in the parasympathetic state we can see things more clearly, connect to your intuition, activate your higher brain and expansive consciousness. The Bio Mat, a warm, healing crystal infused mat, will deepen your relaxation and detoxification. Balancing essential oils are massaged into the souls of your feet depending on your individual needs. Massaging the feet allows for best absorption of the oils into the body and also helps pull energy down away from a restless mind, grounding your energy. Luxurious organic skin treatments are applied to the face, neck and decollete to feed, exfoliate and hydrate the skin. As we massage the scalp, neck and shoulders in this deeply relaxed state new expanded possibilities will be affirmed, blessing the energy centers of the body, and your intention. Through deep relaxation, conscious awareness, affirmations, and blessings this facial creates a mind-set that is positive, open and productive, at the same time nurturing your skin from the outside. This combination will allow your inner light and beauty to shine bright! Learn more ideas for connecting to the power of the moon by scheduling your
