Boasting ‘bold prints and carnival colours’, Nik Philpott’s Artsu collection starred in RAFW’s New Generation show with a mature confidence and nicely refined impression. The cocktails have dried up, the music has faded away and the coloured lights have stopped dancing over Sydney’s Circular Quay. Rosemount Australian Fashion Week 2007 has drawn to a close, and amongst the international buyers, high fashion designers and crowds of traditional media some of our favourite emerging designers had some more intimate, social and entertaining showings. The ‘Hidden Treasures and Unearthed Secrets’ Winter collection from Limedrop has the playful style the Brisbane-born, Melbourne-based label is known for, but with a darker, more mature undertone than we’ve seen previously. There’s a mysterious smokey feel to numerous pieces, perhaps a reflection of the mystery surrounding the historic Fitzroy warehouse that recently became the new Limedrop studio. It’s a stylish, crisp and unique collection from a label that continues to attract well-deserved attention.

Featuring fabric intimately bodypainted by near-naked girls on the floor of a Melbourne art gallery, the launch range from Wolf Rayet is creative to say the very least. It’s a promising collection with a fresh view on all-over prints, straying from the popular patterns of today to create unique wearable works of art. A handful of well recognised independent fashion players have ensured Australia has been at least partly in the global independent fashion spotlight over the past few years. Whispers from across the pond indicate the spotlight is broadening to also include some of our up-and-coming independent fashion stars, as Ami Kealoha of Cool Hunting recently identified the fresh pieces by Melbourne’s Nikoroo (pictured), Carmel the Intern at Josh Spear noticed Sydney’s Camarilla favourite Saint Augustine Academy and was left lusting for more, while Stella Kae of Metro.Pop magazine hearts Melbourne’s St Lenny in a recent feature article, which also includes a quote from Camarilla. The momentum is building.

It’s clear that Katie Boyd’s label The Cassette Society muses are the stars of glitzy New York Broadway and bright neon London dance studios. But, what sets Sydney-based Boyd’s pieces apart is that her collection is functionally motivated and designed to dress the stars of danc-icals, from top to pointe and not just the fashionistas who feign fitness. The Cassette Society is a purpose-based collection with attention to chaotic detail boasting wet-look fabrics, ribbed fabrics, a reoccurring electrical musical note throughout the collection, studs, multi-layering, hand-plaited rope draw cords and lurex knits.

In short, The Cassette Society is a one-stop-shop for all your eye-catchingly bold leotards and ‘get your freak on’ performance enhancing fibres needs.

Shooting exceedingly vivid fashion photography in a style reminiscent of The Sartorialist and Face Hunter, Nadia and Adele of Third Best are capturing Melbourne’s street fashion from a fresh perspective. Giving a telling account of what’s hot right now, Third Best documents Melbourne’s fashion movement with a certain honesty, style and poise that will guarantee both longevity and authority in the street fashion trendspotting scene.

With a growing international reputation for trendsetting fashion and the coolest collection titles in the game, Saint Augustine Academy presents ‘I Love Your Friends, They’re All So Arty.. Oh Yeah!’, the Autumn/Winter 2007 collection drawing inspiration from ‘the styling of five modern Art Rock bands - Franz Ferdinand, Hot Hot Heat, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Television on the Radio, and VHS or Beta’.

It’s the first time Saint Augustine Academy has introduced knitwear, with the collection featuring two hooded pieces and a knitted translation of the popular double-breasted cardigan. Now firmly established in the global fashion industry, Saint Augustine Academy is sold alongside other international trendsetters in renowned Los Angeles boutique ‘H Lorenzo’.

Recent pursuits in creating online independent fashion boutiques are bringing both Australian and international designers closer to consumers globally. Specialising in one-off garments, accessories and jewellery, the Australian-based Ku-ture will focus on up and coming designers and launches on 26 February. Internationally, respected independent fashion publication Refinery29 has created Refinery 29 Shops, a ’shopping community composed of the most original and compelling independent boutiques and designers’.

Also going global are the lads from Bondi-based Thousand Reasons, with the most recent collection (pictured) to be stocked in Los Angeles, New York, London, Sweden and Japan shortly.

Notice it’s been quiet around here lately? Your Camarilla publisher has been engaged in the cultural delights of South America for the past couple of weeks, so the usual flow of fresh content has slowed to a trickle and it’s going to be this way for a few weeks yet.
