What Is the Difference Between Calling and Chosen in the Bible?

Are believers called or are they chosen? What is the difference between these two? Do they conflict with one another?

Chosen by God

R.C. Sproul wrote an outstanding book called “Chosen by God” and I highly recommend this book from one of the greatest theologians in the last 100 years. He sees a believer’s election as an effectual one. That is, when God calls someone He enables that person to respond to that call in faith. Jesus Himself chose the disciples and God’s word also says that we are called. Which is it? Is being called the same thing as being chosen? Do we choose Him or does He choose us? It is actually both of these because God chooses those to who He will save and then He calls those same.

You are Chosen

Jesus called His disciples and He says that we are chosen. There are dozens of Scriptures that testify to this fact. Here are a few Scriptures that I have selected and after which will be followed by a commentary.

John 15:16 “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.”

Jesus clearly chose the disciples, they did not choose Him. He even says “You did not choose me, but I chose you.”

John 6:44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.”

The way Jesus says this is that “no man can” meaning that no man, at any time, can, or is able to, of himself or herself come to Him. The word “come” in the Greek is “erchomai” which means “to come from one place or another.” So, no one can come to Christ unless something happens first. That something is not a little nothing but a huge something. That something is unless the Father…draws them. The word for “draw” in the Greek is “helko” which means to literally “drag” or to “draw by an inward power.” I believe that “inward power” is that of the Holy Spirit. So this sentence, if we insert the original Greek, should read “No one can come from one place (being unsaved) to the other (to Christ Who saves) me (Jesus) unless the Father who sent me (Jesus) drags him as by an inward power.

There are dozens of other Scriptures that show that God is the One Who calls and has even predestined us before the earth even existed (Eph 1) but this theme of being called by God is not restricted to the New Testament but is found throughout the Old Testament. God called Abraham out of paganism, God called Israel out of Egypt, God called Moses out of shepherding and when God calls, all follow, with no exceptions, showing that God has the power to bring about what He purposes.

God called Israel specifically as we read in Isaiah 41:4, 8-9

“Who has performed and done this, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am he. But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend; you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, “You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off.”

Nowhere here is the idea that Abraham said, “Hey, I think I’ll give God a try” or Israel voted collectively and by an overwhelming majority vote, voted to choose God. No, God says that “he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will” (Eph 1:4-5). How clear that is!

You are Called

There is no doubt that God does the choosing and we don’t really choose Him but are we also called by God? Is our calling the same thing as being chosen? Here are Scriptures that emphatically state that we are also called and the conclusion must be that being chosen by God results in being called by God and so if you are chosen by God you must be called.

Matthew 22:14 “Many are called but few are chosen.”

This seems to contradict what the Scriptures say that you can be called but not chosen but that is not what Jesus is saying here if you read the entire chapter. Many are called and many come to Christ but only a few are chosen. Why so? Remember in the Parable of the Sower that many did come and were called to the knowledge of God but some fell on stony ground, others on thorns, while others never took root. Some fell away after persecution, some got entangled in the affairs of the world while riches chocked the others from being saved. They professed saving faith at one time but they really never possessed saving faith. They may have been called but if they were not saved and fell away as the seed never took root and this reveals that they were never really chosen.

Second Timothy 1:9 “God, who saved us and called us to [literally “with”] a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began.”

This seems to match what Ephesians 1:4-5 say that we are called with a holy calling but this calling began “before the ages [or time] began. “ God, the One Who saved us was also the One Who called us to a holy calling. He is the One that initiated this calling, before the ages began (or time began), meaning before the earth even existed.

First Corinthians 1:26 “For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.”

Here we see that we are called and to consider (ponder, think about) that calling and most of those who are called are not the powerful or born of nobility or in places of great power or prominence.

Romans 8:28-30 “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.”

This is called the golden chain of salvation by many. God works all things out for the best but only for those who are “called according to His purpose.” He does not say that all things will always work out for good but they will always work out for our good but this good is only for those who are “called according to His purpose” and not according to our purpose. He foreknew us and those Who He foreknew He also predestined to be saved “and those whom He called He also justified.” The theme of being called is repeated in these verses and anytime words are repeated in the Bible, it is always for emphasizing something that is very import. In this verse there is nothing about us or we or that we chose Him or we participated in this call.

Conclusion

When I was called to dinner as a child, I was chosen to have dinner and that we always sat in the same place at the dinner table. We didn’t choose our parents any more than we chose God. God chooses us and those He chose He calls. They are like the left hand complimenting the right. They go together. One comes first…being chosen, like in predestination. Next comes the calling, calling those who were chosen. If you are not sure if you are chosen then please read Romans 10:9-13 or Acts 16:30-31 and if you believe this, then you have been chose and perhaps today God the Father is calling you to Christ (John 6:44) so that you might believe and be saved.

Question: How can I not got to hell?

Answer:
Not going to hell is easier than you think. Some people believe they have to obey the Ten Commandments for their entire lives to not go to hell. Some people believe they must observe certain rites and rituals in order to not go to hell. Some people believe there is no way we can know for sure whether or not we will go to hell. None of these views are correct. The Bible is very clear on how a person can avoid going to hell after death.

The Bible describes hell as a terrifying and horrible place. Hell is described as “eternal fire” (Matthew 25:41), “unquenchable fire” (Matthew 3:12), “shame and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12:2), a place where “the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:44-49), and “everlasting destruction” (2 Thessalonians 1:9).Revelation 20:10describes hell as a “lake of burning sulfur” where the wicked are “tormented day and night forever and ever.” Obviously, hell is a place we should avoid.

Why does hell even exist, and why does God send some people there? The Bible tells us that God “prepared” hell for the devil and the fallen angels after they rebelled against Him (Matthew 25:41). Those who refuse God’s offer of forgiveness will suffer the same eternal destiny of the devil and the fallen angels. Why is hell necessary? All sin is ultimately against God (Psalm 51:4), and since God is an infinite and eternal being, only an infinite and eternal penalty is sufficient. Hell is the place where God’s holy and righteous demands of justice are carried out. Hell is where God condemns sin and all those who reject Him. The Bible makes it clear that we have all sinned (Ecclesiastes 7:20;Romans 3:10-23), so, as a result, we all deserve to go to hell.

So, how can we not go to hell? Since only an infinite and eternal penalty is sufficient, an infinite and eternal price must be paid. God became a human being in the Person of Jesus Christ (John 1:1,14). In Jesus Christ, God lived among us, taught us, and healed us—but those things were not His ultimate mission. God became a human being so that He could die for us. Jesus, God in human form, died on the cross. As God, His death was infinite and eternal in value, paying the full price for sin (1 John 2:2). God invites us to receive Jesus Christ as Savior, accepting His death as the full and just payment for our sins. God promises that anyone who believes in Jesus (John 3:16), trusting Him alone as the Savior (John 14:6), will be saved, i.e., not go to hell.

God does not want anyone to go to hell (2 Peter 3:9). That is why God made the ultimate, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice on our behalf. If you want to not go to hell, receive Jesus as your Savior. It is as simple as that. Tell God that you recognize that you are a sinner and that you deserve to go to hell. Declare to God that you are trusting in Jesus Christ as your Savior. Thank God for providing for your salvation and deliverance from hell. Simple faith, trusting in Jesus Christ as the Savior, is how you can avoid going to hell!

Reformed theology gets its name from the sixteenth century Protestant Reformation, with its distinct theological emphases, but it is theology solidly based on the Bible itself. Believers in the reformed tradition regard highly the specific contributions of such people as Martin Luther, John Knox, and particularly John Calvin, but they also find their strong distinctives in the giants of the faith before them, such as Anselm and Augustine, and ultimately in the letters of Paul and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Reformed Christians hold to the doctrines characteristic of all Christians, including the Trinity, the true deity and true humanity of Jesus Christ, the necessity of Jesus' atonement for sin, the church as a divinely ordained institution, the inspiration of the Bible, the requirement that Christians live moral lives, and the resurrection of the body. They hold other doctrines in common with evangelical Christians, such as justification by faith alone, the need for the new birth, the personal and visible return of Jesus Christ, and the Great Commission. What, then, is distinctive about reformed theology

1. The Doctrine of Scripture.

The reformed commitment to Scripture stresses the Bible's inspiration, authority, and sufficiency. Since the Bible is the Word of God and so has the authority of God Himself, reformed people affirm that this authority is superior to that of all governments and all church hierarchies. This conviction has given reformed believers the courage to stand against tyranny and has made reformed theology a revolutionary force in society. The sufficiency of Scripture means that it does not need to be supplemented by new or ongoing special revelation. The Bible is the entirely sufficient guide for what we are to believe and how we are to live as Christians.

The Reformers, and particularly John Calvin, stressed the way the objective, written Word and the inner, supernatural ministry of the Holy Spirit work together, the Holy Spirit illuminating the Word to God's people. The Word without the illumination of the Holy Spirit remains a closed book. The supposed leading of the Spirit without the Word leads to errors and excess. The Reformers also insisted upon the believers' right to study the Scripture for themselves. Though not denying the value of trained teachers, they understood that the clarity of Scripture on matters essential for salvation makes the Bible the property of every believer. With this right of access always comes the responsibility of careful and accurate interpretation

2. The Sovereignty of God.

For most reformed people the chief and most distinctive article of the creed is God's sovereignty. Sovereignty means rule, and the sovereignty of God means that God rules over His creation with absolute power and authority. He determines what is going to happen, and it does happen. God is not alarmed, frustrated, or defeated by circumstances, by sin, or by the rebellion of His creatures.

3. The Doctrines of Grace.

Reformed theology emphasizes the doctrines of grace, best known by the acronym TULIP, though this does not correspond to the best possible names for the five doctrines.

T stands for total depravity. This does not mean that all persons are as bad as they could possibly be. It means rather that all human beings are affected by sin in every area of thought and conduct so that nothing that comes out of anyone apart from the regenerating grace of God can please God. As far as our relationships to God are concerned, we are all so ruined by sin that no one can properly understand either God or God's ways. Nor do we seek God, unless He is first at work within us to lead us to do so

U stands for unconditional election. An emphasis on election bothers many people, but the problem they feel is not actually with election; it is with depravity. If sinners are as helpless in their depravity as the Bible says they are, unable to know and unwilling to seek God, then the only way they could possibly be saved is for God to take the initiative to change and save them. This is what election means. It is God choosing to save those who, apart from His sovereign choice and subsequent action, certainly would perish.

L stands for limited atonement. The name is potentially misleading, for it seems to suggest that reformed people want somehow to restrict the value of Christ's death. This is not the case. The value of Jesus' death is infinite. The question rather is what is the purpose of Christ's death, and what He accomplished in it. Did Christ intend to make salvation no more than possible? Or did He actually save those for whom He died? Reformed theology stresses that Jesus actually atoned for the sins of those the Father had chosen. He actually propitiated the wrath of God toward His people by taking their judgment upon Himself, actually redeemed them, and actually reconciled those specific persons to God. A better name for "limited" atonement would be "particular" or "specific" redemption.

I stands for irresistible grace. Left to ourselves we resist the grace of God. But when God works in our hearts, regenerating us and creating a renewed will within, then what was undesirable before becomes highly desirable, and we run to Jesus just as previously we ran away from Him. Fallen sinners do resist God's grace, but His regenerating grace is effectual. It overcomes sin and accomplishes God's purpose.

P stands for perseverance of the saints. A better name might be "the perseverance of God with the saints," but both ideas are actually involved. God perseveres with us, keeping us from falling away, as we would certainly do if He were not with us. But because He perseveres we also persevere. In fact, perseverance is the ultimate proof of election. We persevere because God preserves us from full and final falling away from Him.

4. The Cultural Mandate.

Reformed theology also emphasizes the cultural mandate, or the obligation of Christians to live actively in society and work for the transformation of the world and its cultures. Reformed people have had various views in this area, depending on the extent to which they believe such a transformation possible But on the whole they agree on two things. First we are called to be in the world and not to withdraw from it. This sets reformed believers apart from monasticism. Second, we are to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and visit the prisoner. But the chief needs of people are still spiritual, and social work is no adequate substitute for evangelism. In fact, efforts to help people will only be truly effective as their hearts and minds are changed by the gospel. This sets reformed believers apart from, mere humanitarianism. It has been objected to reformed theology that t anyone who believes along reformed lines will lose all motivation for evangelism. "If God is going to do the work, why should I bother?" But it does not work that way. It is because God does the work that we can be bold to join Him in it, as He commands us to do. We do it joyfully, knowing that our efforts will never be in vain.

They feature Heavy Metal crunching guitar riffs, fantastic explosions of light and sound like you were at a Lady Gaga concert, and proudly displayed center stage is the Illuminati pyramid that Beyonce is so fond of. When asked about the use of this major Illuminati symbol, they said that they were “inspired by Mount Zion” in the bible. Yeah, right.

Today’s Christians are so spiritually dead, that they can be shown this unholy, demonic mess and never see anything wrong with it.

The bible calls us to be separate, not be not like the world but to be like Jesus Christ. Hillsong has millions of fans and follower all over the world, not because they preach the Gospel, but because they offer up Satan’s counterfeit of what the Church of Jesus Christ is supposed to be all about. Look at this video clip of one of their concert “church services”, and you tell me where you see Jesus in any of that unholy mess.

The doctrine preached at Hillsong is not the doctrine of the bible, and if you are a Christian saved by the shed blood of Jesus Christ, you should have no part of these workers of darkness.

The Illuminati pyramid topped off by what looks like a huge snake in a circle, this is what your average Hillsong United “worship service” looks like. Do YOU see Jesus anywhere in here?

Hillsong United is part of the demonic Emergent Church Movement, and it is deadly spiritual poison wrapped in the candy-coated wrapper of the world’s entertainment.

Total Hereditary Depravity

As with the other four doctrines of Calvinism, the doctrine of Total Hereditary Depravity, also known as the doctrine of "original sin," is taught by a large number of denominations. The phrase, "Total Hereditary Depravity," implies three things which Calvinists believe about the nature of all humans at birth.

They are depraved. They are caught up in and guilty of sin.
They are wholly or totally depraved. Nothing about them is good.
The sinful condition, depravity, in which they are born is hereditary -- it comes to them from their parents.

This article will examine this doctrine by looking at how it is expressed by denominations and individuals who teach it and the basic meaning of the terms used to express it; the proof texts used by its proponents to defend it; its consequences if it were true; and some Scriptural objections to it.

Total Hereditary Depravity Expressed

The Westminster Confession of Faith states, "They (Adam and Eve, GT) being the root of all mankind, the guilt of this sin was imputed, and the same death in sin and corrupted nature conveyed to all their posterity, descending from them by ordinary generation. From this original corruption, whereby we are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil, do proceed all actual transgressions." (Chapter VI)

The Philadelphia Confession of Faith, the first creed adopted by the Baptist churches in the United States, says,

"Our first parents by the sin, fell from their original righteousness and communion with God, and we in them, whereby death came upon all; all becoming dead in sin, and wholly defiled in all faculties, and parts of soul, and body." (p. 24)
"They being the root, and by God's appointment, standing in the room, and stead of all mankind, the guilt of their sin was imputed, and corrupted nature conveyed, to all their posterity, descending from them by ordinary generation, being now conceived in sin, and by nature children of wrath, the servants of sin, the subjects of death and all other miseries, spiritual, temporal, and eternal, unless the Lord Jesus sets them free." (p. 24)
"From this original corruption whereby all are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil, do proceed all actual transgressions." (p. 24)

The Augsburg Confession of Faith was presented June 25, 1530, it contains the 28 articles which constitute the basic confession of the Lutheran churches. It relates, "…That since the fall of Adam, all men…are born with sin, that is without fear of God…and this disease or vice of origin is truly sin even now in condemning and bringing eternal death upon those not born again… "

John Wesley, 1703-1791, was "a leader of the Evangelical Revival and founder of the Methodist Church in Great Britain and America..." (The World Book Encyclopedia, Vol. 21, p. 352) In regard to the doctrine of Total Hereditary Depravity, he said, "We are condemned before we have done good or evil, under the curse before we know what it is." (Sermons on Original Sin, p. 340)

Proof Texts Used to Support Total Hereditary Depravity

Genesis 6:5. The argument based on this text is that every intent of man's heart was evil continually, therefore, all men were born totally depraved. In the context, Noah was a "just man, perfect in his generations." (v. 9) The text states that "all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth" (v.12), not that they were born corrupt. If this verse depicts Total Hereditary Depravity, then why was it not the same in the generations before that of Noah? Why did not God destroy mankind sooner? How is it, if all men were depraved, that in Genesis 4:26, "men began to call on the name of the Lord?"

Psalm 51:1-5. The argument from this passage says that David, being conceived in sin and born in iniquity, was a sinner at birth. Nothing in the text or context says David was born a sinner. David asks God to forgive his sin not his mother's sin. His mother could have conceived in sin but it does not logically follow, neither does it state, that the child inherits that sin. David's parents were simply like all other men and women -- sinners themselves who lived in a world of sin.

Psalm 53:1-3. The argument from this text states that if no one does good, we must be born sinners. The context states otherwise.

Why corrupt? They "have done abominable iniquity." (v. 1)
Is it speaking of babies? A baby cannot "seek God." (v. 2)
These have "turned aside" to sin (v. 3). They were not born in it.
These have "become corrupt" (v. 3). They were not born that way.

Psalm 58:3. This argument says, "The wicked are estranged (from God) from the womb." Note the use of the phrase "go astray." They are not born wicked. Babies are not under consideration in this passage. "Speaking lies" indicates age. They stop their ears. (vv. 4-5) They are old enough to understand. Babies are not born with teeth. (v. 6)

Romans 3:19. The argument Calvinists used from this passage is that all the world is guilty of sin before God because they are born in sin. Adam's sin or inherited depravity are not even mentioned. The passage is simply stating that both Jews and Gentiles are guilty of sinning against God. Note verse 12:"They have all turned aside." One cannot turn aside from that which he was not on in the first place.

Romans 5:12-21. This passage is used to argue that the guilt of the sin of Adam, and thus depravity, has been passed unto all people. While this is a difficult passage, there are two important things to remember which help us understand this text in its context. (1) "All sinned." (v. 12; cf. Rom. 3:23) People are subject to death because of their own sin. (2) "Life through the One, Jesus Christ." (v. 17) Verse 17 teaches that both life and death are conditional. If we say that Adam's sin brings automatic spiritual death, we must also say that Christ's life brings automatic spiritual life. It was the sentence of "death," not sin, which spread to all men.

Romans 8:6, 7. The argument here is that the "carnal mind" (v. 7), refers to the unconverted. Verses four and five show that the ones with carnal minds "walk according to the flesh." It does not state that they are born in sin.

1 Corinthians 2:14. Their argument based on this passages is that the natural (sinful) man cannot understand and does not accept the things of God because he is inherently sinful. The "natural man" does not refer to a sinful, depraved person who has inherited his parents' sins. It has reference to one who is concerned only about material, temporal things and who neglects spiritual responsibilities. Such a one seeks earthly wisdom, not spiritual. (1 Cor. 1:18-25) He is contrasted in verse 14 with the spiritually-oriented person of verse 15.

1 Corinthians 15:22. The argument is that Adam brought physical death upon all people and every person who dies bears the guilt and penalty of Adam's sin. Does it not stand to reason, if all lost spiritual life in Adam, would not this passage also require that all people will have spiritual life in Jesus -- that all will be saved? (cf. Matt. 7:13-14) The penalty is inherent, not the guilt.

2 Corinthians 7:1. The argument is that both flesh and spirit are defiled. They fail to understand that the text is addressingChristians telling them to cleanse themselves of all defilements of both flesh and spirit -- giving, by the way, the Calvinist doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints great difficulty.

Consequences of the Doctrine of Total Hereditary Depravity

No unregenerate person can do good. Every act of a non-Christian is sinful. Even if a non-Christian helps an accident victim or the needy, he still sins, Calvinists say, because he does it with the wrong motive. It is impossible for him to have any right motives because he is totally depraved.

An individual's salvation lies entirely at the discretion of God. Nothing a person does affects his salvation.

God must take direct miraculous action to save a person's soul. Thus, the false concept of the direct operation of the Holy Spirit in the conversion of the sinner necessarily arises from the principle of Total Hereditary Depravity.

Scriptural Objections to Total Hereditary Depravity

Exodus 32:31-33. Moses asked God to let him receive the punishment for the people's sins so that they could be spared. In His answer, God lets all know that it is the ones who sin, not the ones born in sin, whose names are removed from the book of life.

Deuteronomy 1:34-39. The Israelites could not enter the promised land because of sin but their children could.

Ecclesiastes 7:29. God made man upright. He is not depraved when born. Rather, he is without sin.

Isaiah 59:1-8. Your sins and iniquities, not someone else's, separate you from God. Verses three through eight list some specific sins -- murder, lying, acting violently, running toward evil, etc. Could a newborn baby have done these things?

Ezekiel 18:5-20. A righteous son is not guilty of his wicked father's sins and a righteous father is not guilty of the sins of his wicked son. The conclusion in verse 20 is too obvious to miss: "The soul who sins shall die."

Matthew 18:1-5. If we are to be as little children and if Total Hereditary Depravity is true, we need to be more like sinners. Total Hereditary Depravity is inconsistent with the teaching of Jesus about the nature of children. If one believes the Calvinist and his denominational creeds, when Jesus demands people to become as little children, they must be: "Wholly defiled in all the faculties of soul and body" and "By nature children of wrath."

Romans 7:9-11. Rather than being born spiritually dead, the apostle Paul was born spiritually alive. We become spiritually dead because of our own sins not sins we inherit from our ancestors. Death came to all because all sinned. (Rom. 5:12) You become "dead through your trespasses." (Col. 2:13)

1 Corinthians 14:20. "In malice be babes." If babes are totally depraved, why would the apostle Paul encourage anyone to be like them?

1 John 3:4. Those who believe in inherited sin do not even understand the very nature of sin. One is a sinner because he commits sin by violating the standard of conduct God has given to guide him.

Conclusion

The basis of Calvinism originated, not in the mind of God, but in the mind of a mistaken theologian. A person becomes a sinner when he violates God's law not when he is born. We do not inherit the sin of our parents, Adam or anyone else.

The Four Blood Moon Tetrad Phenomena Under Examination

History is littered with the dead bones of prophecies and predictions that failed the test of time.In recent times it is likely you will have been aware of The Jupiter Effect, Michael Drosnin’s Bible Code, the Quatrains of Nostradamus, Y2K and more recently the December 21st 2012 predictions.

So what makes the four blood moons prophecy different to all that we have seen before? Is this another prophecy tragedy or could this celestial event be the most incredible sign of the times?

Signs in the Heavens

The significance of celestial, astronomical and heavenly events has been a key feature of world history from the time of Genesis. If we go to the book of Genesis we see a profound statement made by Moses in his account of the creation of the heavens by God Almighty. Why did God create the stars in the heavens in the first place? We read one significant answer in Genesis, the first chapter. Moses wrote:

“And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years” Genesis 1:14

From a biblical perspective the use of the Sun and Moon as signs is evident. For instance in the book of Joshua chapter 10, the sun and the moon stood still for Joshua and his army over Gibeon, so they could have enough day time to complete the war. In Genesis we see that a young Joseph had a dream that involved the sun, moon and stars which would become a symbolic prophecy of his rise to greatness.

Incredible heavenly phenomena have been witnessed throughout history and there would be too many to feature here. However the following provides a snapshot of strange events which immediately triggered an association with bible prophecies.

The 1780 Day of Darkness

On the 19th of May, 1780 many people thought that the day of the Lord had arrived when the sky became pitch black during the day. The darkness was not due to an eclipse since the moon was then nearly full. It was not caused by clouds, nor due to the thickness of the atmosphere, as in some localities where the darkness extended, the sky was so clear that the stars could be seen.

The extent of the darkness was also very remarkable. It was observed at the most eastern regions of New England; westward, to the farthest part of Connecticut, and southward at Albany, it was observed all along the sea coast; and to the north, as far as the American settlements extended. It probably far exceeded those boundaries, but the exact limits were never positively known. With regard to its duration, it continued in the neighborhood of Boston for at least fourteen or fifteen hours.”

Timothy Dwight says, “The 19th of May, 1780, was a remarkable dark day. Candles were lighted in many houses; the birds were silent and disappeared, and the fowls retired to roost. … A very general opinion prevailed, that the day of judgment was at hand.” Quoted in Connecticut Historical Collections, compiled by John Warner Barber (2nd ed.; New Haven: Durrie & Peck and J.W. Barber, 1836) p. 403.

The August 1999 Total Eclipse

On August 11th 1999, millions of people across Europe, Middle East and Africa witnessed a total solar eclipse. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s apparent diameter is larger than the Sun, blocking all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness. Totality occurs in a narrow path across the surface of the Earth, while a partial solar eclipse will be visible over a region thousands of kilometers wide.

The path of the Moon’s shadow began in the Atlantic Ocean and, before noon, was traversing Cornwall, Devon, northern France, Belgium, Luxembourg, southern Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, and northern FR Yugoslavia (Vojvodina). Its maximum was in Romania (next to a town called Ocnele Marinear Râmnicu Vâlcea); and it continued across Bulgaria, the Black Sea, Turkey, Iran, southern Pakistan and Srikakulam in India and ended in the Bay of Bengal.

Millions witnessed an eerie feeling as darkness descended, the air cooled down and the birds stopped singing. Because of the high density populated in the areas of the path, there is little doubt that this was the most-viewed total solar eclipse in human history.

The Jupiter Effect, Comets and Meteorites

Other heavenly signs that have caused significant discussion and debate also include the planetary alignment phenomena of 1982. The Jupiter Effect was a best-selling book by John Gribbin, Ph.D., and Stephen Plagemann (published. 1974) that predicted that this alignment of the planets of the solar system would create a number of catastrophes, including a great earthquake on the San Andreas Fault in Los Angeles, on March 10, 1982.

Many of you will also remember the Hale-Bopp Comet, one of the most publicized celestial bodies which in 1997 sparked a major tragedy in which 39 members of the Heaven’s Gate, an American UFO religion doomsday cult based in San Diego California, committed mass suicide in order to reach what they believed was an alien space craft following the Comet Hale–Bopp, which was then at its brightest.

More recently on September 15, 2007, a meteorite impacted Earth near the village of Carancas, Peru, creating a 50-foot-wide crater. When local officials went to investigate, they saw boiling water bubbling at the bottom of the hole. Sickeningly foul-smelling, noxious gases rose out of it, striking the investigators ill on the spot. In the days after the impact, about 200 villagers came down with a mysterious illness, suffering nausea, headaches and vomiting. Later, tests of the impact site by scientists at Peru’s Mining, Metallurgy, and Geology Institute showed that the locals had likely suffered mild arsenic poisoning.

In all three cases at the time parallels were drawn with bible prophecy and the book of Revelation in which John in his vision saw a number of global cataclysmic events which involved astral projects impacting the earth causing significant calamity.

The Prophecy of the Blood Moon Tetrads

When major astronomical and heavenly events take place it has been natural to turn to the Bible for validation since Jesus Christ himself said, referring to the days before His second coming:

“And there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven”…..“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars . . .” Luke 21: 11, 25.

However there are specific references that focus on the moon looking “blood red” in the lead up to the great and terrible Day of the Lord and it is for this reason that the prophecy of the Blood Moon Tetrads is causing a ripple across the bible community.

“The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD” Joel 2:31

“I look when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood” Revelation.6:1

Blood Moons are when the moon appears red due to lunar eclipses. They occur when the earth is positioned between the sun and the moon (see top part of image below). The Earth’s shadow blocks the sun’s light, which would normally reflect off the moon. The delicate layer of dusty air surrounding our planet reddens and redirects the light of the sun, filling the dark behind the Earth with a sunset-red glow. This is in contrast to a solar eclipse where the moon is positioned between the earth and the sun causing darkness (see bottom part of image below).

Blood Moon lunar eclipses have happened continuously throughout history, but a Blood Moon Tetrad is when 4 consecutive total lunar eclipses occur on a Jewish Holy Feast day. There have only been 7 Blood Moon Tetrads between Jesus Christ’s first coming and 2013, and every time they happened it has been proven that there was some significant event which impacted upon the Jewish people within a year of the first or last eclipse of the tetrad.

The only time during this century (2000 AD – 3000 AD) that a Blood Moon Tetrad will take place is the year 2014-2015. A growing group of researchers believe something significant is going to happen in 2014 and 2015 which will involve Israel and the world. This has set off a chain reaction of debate and discussion about this event.
