Ready for a movie night, Cameron Landing? Weekends are a great time to do it, and since it’s Friday I figured I would mention what’s out in theaters this weekend. Take a look at the list below, along with a review of Underworld Awakening. You will notice that the movie gets low reviews from critics, but ranks way higher from audience feedback. Could be good, could be bad, but either way, as with any movie you should decide for yourself!

Pet-Friendly Cameron Landing Welcomes New Doggies to the Community

I am a huge dog lover and I bet that a lot of you are, too. If so, why not adopt one and bring it into your family? Since we are a pet-friendly community here at Cameron Landing, we welcome those little guys and girls to set up camp in your apartment. If you’re ready to adopt, here are a few pups that are waiting for you:

When mother and child tried to give Joey to me, he wouldn’t let me hold him, so I got in my car, and they set Joey in my car to let him ride shotgun on the way home from work. In less than 30 minutes, Joey had crawled on my lap and kissed me. I am glad my commute is 60 minutes because it gave Joey and me a chance to bond before introducing him to the resident pack of dogs. Joey’s not much for playtime with the others, he prefers to snuggle up to his humans. It took Joey 2 days to warm up to my husband, but now they are best buds and Joey has left my bed in favor of sleeping in the Chihuahua room where my husband sneaks in after the night shift to snooze until morning. As soon as he hears the door open, Joey hops down and scratches on the door to go see him the traitor. Joe likes the company of other female dogs except he does like the male dachshund wer’e fostering for Alcovy Pet Rescue, but he tolerates the others well. Joey is a lovable, wonderful dog, and he has not had any potty accidents in our home, even without the use of the doggy door (he refuses to use it). On initial greeting, he’s usually on his guard and will only let you hold him if you covertly hand him off. Otherwise, just sit on the couch and wait for him to come to see you, and love will blossom.

Take a Hike, Cameron Landing! At Panola Mountain State Park, of Course

Visit Panola Mountain State Park for a nice hike

I know it’s pretty cold out there right now, so it might seem like a strange time to discuss this, but it’s a great time to get outside for a hike. Maybe not this week, but next week it’s supposed to be in the 60s – a little odd for the winter but hey, I’ll take it.

What about a visit to Panola Mountain State Park? It’s conveniently located near Cameron Landing off Highway 155, so you don’t have to go far for an active day outdoors. The park is open daily from 7 am to dusk and the nature center from 8:30 am to 5 pm. During the winter, the nature center will be closed from Tuesday – Thursday so plan accordingly.

One event to take note of is the Saturday Afternoon Mountain Hike, which will take place at 3 pm on January 21^st and 28^th and February 4^th. Bring sturdy hiking shoes and some water and prepare to be exposed to various plant species and wildlife. Register in advance by calling 770-389-7801. Have fun!

Now that I’ve given you some time to think about it, I’d love to hear about Cameron Landing’s New Year’s resolutions. While everyone is different, when it comes to setting goals for the New Year, we tend to have many of the same ideas. Since the first step to success is having goals, it is a great idea to take a look ahead and think about what you would like to accomplish this year. Here are some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions for 2012:

Make exercise a habit
Lose weight
Stop smoking
Take more time to enjoy life
Quit drinking
Spend more time with the family
Reach out and help people
Get out of debt
Get organized
Learn a new skill

Another thing to do in addition to thinking of goals is to write them down. It is much easier to follow certain steps to reach your goals when you have them down on paper to look at. You can even make a list of the baby steps you will take to get to your desired result. What will be on your list?

Winter is Here So Here Comes the Cold Weather in Newnan

I have to say that we’ve been pretty lucky here in Georgia with the weather being reasonably temperate this winter. Well, so far. I hope I’m not jinxing it by talking about it here, but let’s face facts; it could be a lot colder than it is here right now. Can you believe that at this time last year we were all stuck in our houses with a snow storm raging outside? I know; it was pretty crazy. Don’t pack up your winter clothes just yet, though, Cameron Landing. Chances are that things will cool down even more than they have in the last week (but hopefully without as much rain as we’ve been getting). With that in mind, I’d like to mention something you can do to stay active while not freezing your fingers off this winter.

The main thing to think about is utilizing our fabulous health and fitness center. With cardio and weight machines galore, you’ve got everything you need to stay active and work on those abs so you can show them off this spring. What is your favorite exercise to do to stay in shape, residents?

Brothy Chinese Noodles for a Lucky Year at Cameron Landing

Long Chinese noodles are said to bring luck to those who eat them on New Year's Day

Any last-minute cooks here at Cameron Landing? Why not add a soup to your menu? It doesn’t have to take long to come up with a delicious complement to your meal, especially with the recipe I have provided below, courtesy of EatingWell.com. Since pork and long noodles are said to be good luck when eaten on New Year’s Day, here is a recipe for brothy Chinese noodles. This should yield 6 servings of about 1 1/3 cups each and will only take 30 minutes to prepare.

Ingredients

2 tbsp. hot sesame oil (see Note), divided
1 lb. 93%-lean ground turkey
1 bunch scallions, sliced, divided
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp. minced fresh ginger
4 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth
3/4 cup water
3 cups thinly sliced bok choy
8 ounces dried Chinese noodles (see Note)
3 tbsp. reduced-sodium soy sauce
1 tbsp. rice vinegar
1 small cucumber, sliced into matchsticks, for garnish

Enjoy your soup and let me know how it turns out!

Celebrate New Year’s the Modern Way Here at Cameron Landing

Happy New Year, everyone!!! You’ll start having that said to you many times over the next several weeks, long after New Year’s Day on January 1^st. While the New Year is traditionally celebrated on this day, this wasn’t always the case.

New Year’s is the oldest out of all holidays, first observed in ancient Babylon approximately 4,000 years ago. Around 2000 BC, the New Year in Babylon started with the first New Moon after the Vernal Equinox. This was a logical time to begin a new year since it was the season of rebirth, planting and blossoming. Conversely, January 1^st has no astronomical or agricultural significance.

The Babylonian celebration of the New Year spanned over a period of 11 days, with each day having its own mode of celebration. In other words, the way we celebrate today pales in comparison to ancient times.

Since that was then and this is now, Cameron Landing wishes you a very happy New Year now, in the winter, and we hope your celebration is a sign of the wonderful things to come in 2012!
