Zuma also pointed to the mining industry, largely responsible for South Africa’s economic success, as another challenge facing his nation’s economic prospects.

“It has not modernised its labour, its workers are still people that come and go”, Zuma said of the migrant workers employed in the South African mining industry.

Zuma said the nation needed to focus on providing an income to South African citizens.

Researchers at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, led by Associate Professor Dr. David Harrich, say they have developed a form of gene therapy that turns the HIV protein against itself and ultimately stops it from replicating, according to the Australian Times.

The Queensland Institute backed the research and attached the following statement to a video interview of Harrich posted on Monday:

Associate Professor David Harrich has found a promising way of stopping HIV from causing AIDS. The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is currently treated with a cocktail of drugs to stop the virus from causing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). But there is no cure or vaccine… His research has uncovered how to modify a crucial protein in the virus.

Harrich himself notes that his research is not an HIV cure. “You would still be infected with HIV,” he said, according to the Queensland Institute’s statement. “But the virus would stay latent, it wouldn’t wake up, so it wouldn’t develop into AIDS. With a treatment like this, you would maintain a healthy immune system.”

Harrich, who has been studying the virus since 1989, told the Times that his breakthrough came at a critical point in his research, as his funding was about to run out.

“I had my PhD student try one more experiment in late 2007. The experiment was to test if Nullbasic could render HIV non-infectious,” Harrich said. (Harrich uses the term “Nullbasic” to refer to the proteins that allow HIV to mutate.) “The student came back and said it worked, so I told him to do it again and again and again. It works every time.”

Speaking with Australian media network ABC News, Harrich said he considers his discovery “fighting fire with fire.”

“What we’ve actually done is taken a normal virus protein that the virus needs to grow, and we’ve changed this protein, so that instead of assisting the virus, it actually impedes virus replication and does it quite strongly,” he told ABC.

Further testing needs to be done, of course, and Harrich said trials on animals will begin this year. If successful, Harrich’s one treatment could replace more traditional, multiple drug therapies. Harrich remarked to ABC that these advances could give HIV patients a way “to go on and live happy and productive lives with as little intrusion as possible.”

Harrich’s paper is published in the current issue of Human Gene Therapy.

The official announcement of his advancement came just days ahead of a similar potential breakthrough heralded by researchers at Stanford University.

The Stanford discovery was published in Molecular Therapy on Tuesday and is related to the creation of HIV-resistant T-cells. According to a Stanford press release, the research “describes the use of a kind of molecular scissors to cut and paste a series of HIV-resistant genes into T-cells.” The release went on to describe how the group achieved its results: “By inactivating a receptor gene and inserting additional anti-HIV genes, the virus was blocked from entering the cells, thus preventing it from destroying the immune system.”

Cameroon is forcing prisoners to have degrading and useless anal exams to find out if they have had gay sex, according to a new report.

Amnesty International says the criminal justice system in the west African country is being ‘used as a weapon to attack lesbian, gay, transgender and intersex people’.

Gay in Cameroon

The global human rights watchdog’s report on Cameroon highlights a ‘notable increase’ since the mid-2000s in the number of gays – or suspected LGBT people – arrested, imprisoned and tortured because of their sexuality.

In particular Amnesty says LGBTI people in custody are forced to undergo anal examinations. The discredited tests are falsely believed to show if someone has had gay sex.

Amnesty International’s Cameroon researcher and author of the report, Godfrey Byaruhanga said: ‘There’s no justification whatsoever for this illegal, degrading treatment. It represents a severe breach of medical ethics and has to end immediately.’

Amnesty told GSN its researchers found 30 cases where people have been arrested with many of them detained for periods ranging from a few days to more than a year.

Others have been unwilling to speak about their arrest or have not wanted to be identified.

Defense lawyers for LGBTI people in Cameroon have recently received death threats against themselves and their children for defending gay people.

While researchers can’t confirm the sources of the death threats, activists suspect they are individuals linked to the government.

Amnesty told GSN it was a major concern the government had not condemned the death threats and said there was virtually no evidence the security services were investigating them.

Byaruhanga added: ‘The government is adamant that it enforces the rule of law but has little to show for it on the ground. It has to prove that it means what it claims.’

Both gay and lesbian sexual acts are banned by section 347 of Cameroon’s penal code, punishable by jail and a fine.

Earlier this month, an appeals court overturned the conviction of two men who were jailed for ‘looking gay’ because they wore women’s clothes and reportedly drank Baileys, an Irish whiskey and cream liqueur. Jonas Kimie and Franky Ndome spent more than a year in prison following their arrest outside a nightclub in the capital Yaoundé in July 2011.

GSN also reported this month on the case of a trader in the north of the country who was stoned to death after having gay sex with a 17-year-old.

Meanwhile, Jean-Claude Roger Mbede was arrested in March 2011 after sending a text to a man saying that he was in love with him. He suffered from malnutrition and regular beatings in jail, and his three-year sentence was upheld in December 2012.

His lawyer, Alice Nkom, who also represented Kimie and Ndome is one of those who received death threats, as GSN reported in October last year.

Amnesty is not the first organization to express serious concern over the country’s treatment of LGBT people. The UN Commissioner for Human Rights has also highlighted the issue.

Homophobia is common in the country, with The Cameroonian Youth Rally organizing a ‘Gay Hate Day’ last August.

The Amnesty International report ‘Republic of Cameroon: make human rights a reality’, is published today (24 January). It lists a wide variety of other human rights concerns, including unlawful killings and torture. It exposes how the authorities also seek to clamp down on political opponents, human rights defenders and journalists.

Off the pitch, however, Tottenham Hotspur left back Benoit Assou-Ekotto is far from your ordinary top-level footballer.

Opinionated and strong-minded, Assou-Ekotto’s surprisingly candid views have often been at odds with the monotonous, if not pretentious, rhetoric that often surrounds the beautiful game.

The French-born Cameroonian international has famously admitted that he’s playing the sport just for the money on offer. He’s grabbed headlines by saying every player is driven by riches and has openly criticized badge-kissing peers of “hypocrisy.”

The refreshingly open, yet soft-spoken, player describes football as a “very, very, very good job,” but says there are more important things in life. He shies away from the celebrity lifestyle favored by many of his English Premier League colleagues and has few friends within football.

“For me it’s very important to have a normal friend and not only friends in football because you can see the reality and the difficulty of the life, [which] you can forget as your job is a very good job,” he explains.

Is he concerned whether some of his comments can be seen in a negative way? “I’m honest and I say what I think,” says Assou-Ekotto, who is known as much for his frank comments as his eye-catching hairstyles. “If you don’t like, I don’t care — I know how I speak maybe will not help me, but I don’t care and I have too much confidence in me.”

With a French mother and having grown up in the city of Arras, northern France, Assou-Ekotto, 28, could have played for the French national team.

But he turned his back on “Les Bleus,” opting instead to play for the country of his father’s origin. He says he’s no turncoat — he just never had an emotional connection with Europe, unlike his strong Cameroonian roots.

“I have more feeling with Cameroon and Africa,” he explains.

Assou-Ekotto says that his decision to play in Africa does limit his earning potential at club level in Europe. He claims African players don’t earn the same wages as other players, partly because they have to play in the Africa Cup of Nations. The tournament, which is usually held every two years, takes many of the continent’s top football stars out of action for their club teams at a critical period in the European domestic season.

“When you make a choice and play for an African [national] team, the football will be more difficult for you because you have the Africa Cup of Nations and there’s not a club [that] wants their footballers to travel one month out in the middle of the season,” he says. “A French player or an English player or a Belgium player or a Spain player would be all the time more expensive as an African player — it’s like that, it’s a reality.”

Yet, for Assou-Ekotto, the choice to represent Cameroon’s “Indomitable Lions” was easy to make.

“I prefer to be proud to play for my country, even if my football will be more difficult, [than] to play for France and don’t have a feeling,” he says.

Assou- Ekotto, who joined Tottenham from French outfit Lens in the summer of 2006, comes from a fine footballing pedigree. His older brother Mathieu played top-flight football in Belgium, while his dad, David, left Cameroon for France as a teenager to play professionally. Assou-Ekotto’s footballing education came from watching matches with his dad, who was an astute mentor, passing on the nuances of the sport.

“Every weekend when I was about 10 I go with him to see football and to play football and then I said, it’s a good job,” remembers Assou-Ekotto. “I said, okay, I will focus only on the football.”

Disinterested with learning in the classroom, Assou-Ekotto dropped out of school at the age of 16 to pursue his sporting ambition. But although his gamble has paid off, Assou-Ekotto says today he regrets not completing high school.

His view on the importance of education has prompted him to start BA32, a foundation promoting the idea of teaching youth in a practical and interesting way, focused on encouraging children across the globe to learn more about mathematics, science and technology.

“When I make this foundation [it] is to give the opportunity to a young boy to understand that the education and the school is very important because you know when you are young you don’t see the real problems of the life; to sleep under the roof you have to pay every month,” he says. “I think it is more easy to pay this kind of stuff when you are clever and when you have a good job.”

Assou-Ekotto is keen for his philanthropy, rather than his sporting success, to be his lasting legacy.

“I prefer to be remembered about what I will do after football because every weekend about 40,000 people enjoy with me and my team but I hope to help more than 40,000 people after football over the world,” he says. “People need help and that will be more interesting for me. People [will remember me] not just as a footballer, because I am not just a footballer.”

La garde presidentielle du Cameroun
