They have produced three publications on the subject of health in the workplace particularly on how to promote employees health, how to provide a healthy return to the workplace to employees that have been absence and an Occupational Health tool kit provides a wealth of assets on how to tackle occupational health problems.

Did you know that NHS Choices has a range of information to help employees improve their health at work. Their workplace health section includes tips on dealing with stress, RSI, back pain, exercise and healthy eating information. There’s also a Chronic Conditions fact sheet specifically for line managers on supporting employees with long-term medical conditions.

Start4Life extends its reach

Start4Life has relaunched with an extended remit to cover maternal health and the health of children up to 5 years. The new campaign is starting with a focus on having a healthy pregnancy and we will be developing more information on other themes over the next year.

We have a new advert which is being shown around the Hollywood film ‘What to do when you’re expecting’ . The Start4Life website has also been revamped to provide top tips for a healthy pregnancy as well as advice for dads, family and friends and the health professionals who support pregnant women.

Be clear on cancer – Lung Cancer campaign launched

The first national lung cancer public awareness campaign in England is now up and running.

This campaign forms part of the Department of Health’s plans to tackle England’s relatively poor cancer survival rates compared with comparable Western European countries. It is estimated that 1300 deaths from lung cancer could be avoided every year if England’s cancer survival rates matched the best in other countries.

The campaign will raise awareness of the symptoms of lung cancer and encourage people with symptoms to visit their GP early. The campaign aims to increase earlier diagnosis of lung cancer to improve the chances of it being successfully treated. The national campaign follows a successful regional pilot in theWest Midlands and East Midlands in October and November 2011. Results from the pilot showed there was high recognition of the campaign, and a 23% increase in the number of people visiting their GP with relevant symptoms.

National secondhand smoke campaign

At the end of March, the Department of Health launched a campaign reminding smokers about the risks of secondhand smoke for their children and families.

The campaign will run across TV, radio, press and online channels and we will also be working with a number of partners to promote the campaign messages.

The campaign creative will dramatise the fact that secondhand smoke is highly toxic and invisible, and that despite parents’ best intentions they are still unwittingly exposing their children to harm.

Over 80 per cent of cigarette smoke is invisible, and the campaign will make the smoke and the harms to health visible. The adverts will also show how children become exposed to smoke in the home even when their parent moves away from them – for example by smoking outside or by a window with smoking drifting back in – or smokes in the family car. The emotive adverts will show the health of families is at risk.

The campaign is still in development, so keep an eye on the Smokefree Resource Centre for all the latest information on the campaign.

Tobacco displays in supermarkets to be covered by 6 April

From 6 April 2012, large shops will no longer be able to display tobacco products to the public except on certain occasions, for instance when staff are serving customers or when they are carrying out stock control or cleaning.

Customers will still be able to buy cigarettes in the usual way but the Government is ending tobacco displays to protect young people who are often the target of tobacco promotion. Ending open cigarette displays will help people trying to quit smoking and help to change attitudes and social norms around smoking.

Removing permanent tobacco displays is one initiative among many being delivered to help to reduce smoking uptake by young people and to support adult smokers who want to quit. The Government’s commitment to these aims is set out in Healthy Lives, Healthy People: A Tobacco Control Plan for England (published 9 March 2011).

Smaller shops will not have to cover up their cigarettes and tobacco products until 6 April 2015.
