Back in February, Entourage Clothing and Gifts of Athens, Georgia came up with a wonderful idea to share some love with the community via an online voting competition. The charity with the most votes on the Entourage Facebook page would recieve a $2,500 donation. Against all odds, Camp Kesem at the University of the Georgia beat out several more established nonprofits in the area to win the competition!

We are so grateful for the donation from Entourage, which provided us with money to pursue other fundraising endeavors, as well as a much-needed boost towards reaching our $10,000 Livestrong matching grant. The money itself is a big deal for us, but it’s also a great reminder of how supported our new chapter already is in our community!

Check out Entourage’s blog post about us here and their Facebook page here.

In what types of situations would you recommend that we draft up a contract for a troublesome camper to hold them accountable for their behavior?…

In what types of situations would you recommend that we draft up a contract for a troublesome camper to hold them accountable for their behavior?

I think the entire concept of a behavior contract depends less on the behaviors and more on the personalities and the history of the campers involved. Anytime there is extreme behavior from a camper that is ongoing or otherwise not easily resolved, there may be an opportunity for some sort of contract. Essentially, a contract is an opportunity for the camper and their parents or guardians to have more control over the potential consequences or outcomes of their behavior. I always try to include three basic parts in a behavior contract:

The behavior that is unacceptable and why (be really specific)

The consequences to repeat behavior including how and when those consequences will be elevated (again, be very specific)

Other ideas and suggestions for acceptable behavior

These three parts offer a roadmap of sorts for kids to follow. They may not be successful, but at least they will know what is coming and they may feel more control over their actions. It is great if you can include parents or guardians in on this. They need to not only be aware of the behavior issues, but also understand their role in helping to reinforce more appropriate behavior. Not to mention, they need to understand that you may be calling mid-week for an early pick up.

Most importantly to the whole process and to everyone involved (campers, staff, and families) a behavior contract should a clear indication that we want the camper to succeed and have fun at camp.

What do we do with our teens during down time?

My favorite stuff to do with teens is either some sort of group project or the discussion-based games. For discussion-based games, I always try and carry in my pocket or backpack trivial pursuit cards or a “would you rather” book. There are also lots of great question books like “The Book of Questions.” Also, if you go on www.ultimatecampresource.com and search “Minute Mysteries” those are interesting clue-type conversation starters.

For group projects, I always like to have a couple of week-long things going with teens. Those massive 3D puzzles are great. It’s something they can work on all week. I have also done murals at camp with teens or song banners. Basically you could take a big white sheet (maybe tie-dye it) and have them write down the words to camp songs, then hold them up at meals or whenever to help the younger kids learn the words.

Question: How to make sure activities are fresh every year? How do we get input on new programming ideas from other camps.

Answer: This is one of the ongoing issues of every camp. Campers that come back year after year are expecting some of the same activities but are also interested in some new ideas and interesting twists. So here are 6 ideas for you to keep in mind:

Keep notes at camp. Try to have people fill out a daily program eval every night during your staff meetings. They don’t have to be long, just the good, bad, and ugly of some of the programs and activities.

Identify a few traditions (whether they are activities, programs, or other) that you want to try and keep consistent year after year.

Challenge yourself to come up with new activities within traditional program areas. For example, every year you could do 5-10 new activity ideas at Arts & Crafts.

Ask other camps on the facebook groups

Come to the CK National conference with 5 specific program related questions

Use online resources for new ideas like www.ultimatecampresource.com

Question: This question came from a Admin & Programming Coordinator at a Camp Kesem with a Teen Program
As you know the Teen Camp Program has to participate in some form of service or charity project during their week of camp.…

Question: This question came from a Admin & Programming Coordinator at a Camp Kesem with a Teen Program

As you know the Teen Camp Program has to participate in some form of service or charity project during their week of camp. The projects from the past have been rather lack luster, and usually involve helping the campsite with maintenance type projects. We really want a meaningful and worthwhile projects for the teens to do this year, but we’re having trouble coming up with ideas, or even charities to reach out to. Any suggestions on where we could get started?

Answer:

I really do like the idea of giving back to the host camp. There is something in there about physically helping to make camp better that I really like. It may be worth a try to involve the Camp Director. I know you said they have been lack luster in the past but they may have better ideas.

I also like the idea of doing something for the support staff at a camp (maintenance, kitchen, cleaning, etc.). A few years ago at Dragonfly we had our Teens do tie-dye aprons for the whole kitchen crew and they loved it.

Local charities might be tough, because they usually want money or volunteer time at the location. If you could find an area soup kitchen and work out transportation, that may be really cool.

Finally, maybe some sort of big thank you for all the student leaders from the teens might be cool. Like planting a tree with a plaque that they make or something like that. It is really a thankless job and that would be really meaningful for the staff.

I hope that helps!!

TLC Family posted an article on “10 Things the Camp Counselor Doesn’t Want You to Know” and Camp Kesem can proudly say that those do not apply to us! Below are responses and explanations of how Camp Kesem doesn’t fit into the typical camp mold!

10: The Counselors Haven’t Had Background Checks

Our entire staff (nurse, therapist, admin team, counselors) has to pass a new background check every single summer in order to come to our camp. Any visitors we have must pass one as well- have no fear, your kids are in great hands!

9: The Counselors Are Kids, Too

All of our counselors are college students, ranging from 18-24 years old; your kids will never be left under the supervision of anyone that has not reached college age. We will be implementing our CIT (Counselor in Training) program in summer 2013, so there will be previous campers ages 16 and up who will be part of this program, however, they will never be solely in charge of campers, they are simply learning how to become great CK counselors!

8: The Facilities Aren’t Up to Par

Every facility we attend have to be up to our national standards- they must meet all health codes, have emergency plans, and are American Camp Association (ACA) accredited. You can also take a tour and check out the entire camp beforehand!

7: Your Camp May Not Be Accredited

Please see # 8

6: There Are No Rules About Hygiene

To keep everyone healthy, smelling reasonably good and comfortable, everyone has to shower at least once a day. We have jam-packed days filled with lake swimming, playing in the mud, etc. so everyone needs a shower (and wants one) at the end of the day!

5: It’s a Real Co-ed Experience

Yes- we have boy and girl campers, however they are never left alone together. Our units travel as a team and if they need to go somewhere during an activity, we use the buddy system; this consists of AT LEAST 2 campers AND 1 counselor or 1 camper, 2 counselors- no one will EVER be one on one- whether it is 2 campers, or a camper and a counselor!

4: The Food’s Nothing to Write Home About

All campsites we attend must have vegetarian and other special dietary needs options, there is also always PB&J and cereal available if the provided meal is not one someone prefers. We have accommodated vegetarians, vegans, kosher, gluten free, dairy free, etc. Your kids will not go hungry- there are plenty of options!

3: There’s No Mission Statement or Objective

Camp Kesem actually has a two-fold mission statement:

To provide children affected by a parent’s cancer with a supportive, lifelong camp opportunity that recognizes and understands their unique needs.

To empower college students to make a difference and build invaluable leadership skills by developing and managing every aspect of their Camp Kesem chapter.

2: The Kid-to-counselor Ratio Is Shockingly High

Not at Camp Kesem! Our ratio is a strict 2:1 for every 2 campers there will always be 1 counselor. This ratio is very different from other camps; we believe that it is so important to have counselors always available to provide that extra attention when necessary. Your kids will never question the care and compassion our counselors have for Camp Kesem and every single camper.

1: Not Every Kid Enjoys Camp

This is very true, not every kid enjoys camp. HOWEVER! We have a ton of different activities and options for our kids that we have never had issues of not having fun. We have something called “free selects” every morning after breakfast, these are counselor-made and run activities that ranges in everything from flag football, to picture frame making, to egg drop, to paper airplanes, to poetry. There are activities for the kids who love sports and for the ones who aren’t athletic, for the crafty campers, and for the mechanical campers. We also have a wide range of highly trained staff and we make each unit a very good balance of personalities so all different kids can have different counselors to relate to. With the extensive training every counselor must go through, they learn how to adapt games and activities so that there are no “winners or losers”. This is a very important aspect of Camp Kesem, that shows our number 1 goal of increasing every camper’s self esteem.

We at Camp Kesem MSU are very proud to say we do not fall into any of TLC family’s counselor secrets!! Camp Kesem as a whole has been providing safe, healthy, fun weeks of camp going on 12 years, and can’t wait to do it for many, many more!

2 Administration and Programming Coordinators who find in-kind donations and supplies, as well as plan camp.

2 Fundraising Coordinators, we have to raise $42,000 in order to run camp successfully.

2 Make the Magic Coordinators who put on our biggest fundraiser that consists of dinner and silent auction, this year we raised $11,000!
