Publicidade no cinema: ABUSO!

Hoje levei a minha filha ao cinema para ver o filme "A Princesa e o Sapo". Cinema Lusomundo, sábado de manhã (11h) portanto uma sessão muito calma (na sala estávamos cerca de 20 pessoas) e sendo um filme infantil o que eu menos esperava era ter que gramar com 15 minutos de publicidade antes de começar o filme!!!.

Isto parece-me um grande abuso. Senão vejamos:

Os bilhetes não são propriamente baratos. Paguei 5,5€ por 2 bihetes e isto porque tenho o My Zon Card que dá direito a 1 de borla.
As pipocas e bebidas são caríssimas. 3€ por uma embalagem de pipocas. (Ok, só compra quem quer mas tem uma margem de lucro altíssima)
Ainda apresentam 15 minutos de publicidade antes de começar o filme (aliás, a publicidade começa 2 minutos antes da hora anunciada do filme para garantir que a publicidade é vista por quase todos os espectadores).
Se a TVI ou a SIC (já nem falo da RTP) passarem 15 minutos de publicidade antes de começar um filme já toda a gente se queixa. E a TVI e a SIC são canais de acesso gratuito.

E depois, ainda se queixam da perda de espectadores por causa dos downloads ilegais. Mesmo os tipos que
levam câmaras de filmar para os cinemas para depois partilharem o filme têm o cuidado de cortar a publicidade antes de disponibilizar o torrent.

É chegar, sentar, Play e começa o filme!

QR codes and iPhone 3G - #fail

I'm a big fan of Adegga and the work of Andre Ribeirinho and his team. One of their innovations is a code they call AVIN and works as the ISBN book code but for wines.
Here in Portugal they are spreading the AVIN and now some wine producers include a QR code on the bottle label. With that, you can easily go wine-shopping and for each of the bottles you are wondering "Is it good?" you can just scan the QR code with your mobile phone which would read the AVIN (unique code for that particular wine and year) and redirect you to Adegga's wine page where you can find reviews, comments, ratings on that particular wine.
Some time ago, in a family's lunch one of the wines being tasted had a QR code with AVIN in the bottle label (Cortes de Cima 2006) and I instantly pulled off my iPhone 3G to give it a try.
At the time, I had QuickMark application installed on my iPhone, but trying to read the code in the bottle didn't work. It said it could not recognize the code being scanned.

I tweeted André asking for recommendations on QR code readers for the iPhone that would work well reading the AVIN QR codes on the wine bottles.

From the applications on the article I tried two but had the same results (not able to decode the code and open the corresponding URL embedded in the code):

I believe this is due to the poor quality of iPhone camera to shoot macro pictures and being able to have a clear and focused image of the QR code.

The only AVIN QR code I was able to scan and decode with my iPhone was pointing to the computer screen on the page example provided in photo on Adegga's blog, http://blog.adegga.com/a-new-design-for-the-dynamic-wine-label/.

Is there any way to improve iPhone's camera quality at a point a QR code in a bottle is "scanable"?

Converter vídeos para o iPod ou iPhone

Para poder visualizar vídeos (por exemplo em DIVX) no iPod ou iPhone é necessário converter o vídeo para um formato suportado pelo iPod ou iPhone.
Neste caso, vamos converter para MP4 e o programa que utilizo para isso é o Jodix Free iPod Video Converter.

Passos a seguir:

1- Fazer download e instalar o programa.

2- Clicar em "Add files" e seleccionar o video a converter.

3- Na seccão "Output" seleccionem a pasta destino e a resolução do filme convertido (como os ecrãs do iPod e iPhone são mais pequenos, não precisam de grande resolução). Eu costumo usar 320x240 para o iPod Nano. No caso do iPhone podem escolher um pouco mais dado que o iPhone suporta 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second (de acordo com as especificações http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html).

4- Adicionarem tags caso o pretendam e clicar em Ok.

5- Caso pretendam podem adicionar mais videos a converter (a conversão funciona em modo batch), repetindo os passos 2 a 4.

6- Clicar em "Convert" e esperar que a conversão dos vídeos adicionados finalize. Podem escolher a opção de fazer shutdown do computador quando terminar ou então esconder o programa para a system tray.

7- No final adicionem os videos convertidos à vossa biblioteca de vídeos do iTunes e sincronizem com o iPod / iPhone activando a sincronização dos vídeos convertidos.

VPN passthrough no Firestarter (Ubuntu)

O meu setup de rede em casa no momento é um portátil com Ubuntu + Firestarter + Kanguru a fornecer um endereço IP por DHCP ao router wireless (actualmente um Linksys mas tenho um Fonera à espera de ser flashado com o OpenWrt ou outro qq firmware - alguém tem sugestões?).
Desta forma o Firestarter faz todo o trabalho de partilhar a net do Kanguru para o router wireless que me permite aceder usando os outros portáteis e o meu iPhone.

Tentei ligar à VPN da empresa (Windows PPTP) e não conseguia. Verifiquei as configurações do router wireless e tinha o VPN Passthrough activo para PPTP, portanto o problema tinha que estar no Ubuntu (era o Firestarter a bloquear as ligações).

Uma pesquisa rápida na net e encontrei este site, http://www.fs-security.com/docs/vpn.php.

A solução é simples:
- Editar o ficheiro /etc/firestarter/user-pre (com permissões de administração: sudo vi /etc/firestarter/user-pre)
- Acrescentar as seguintes linhas:

# Forward PPTP VPN client traffic
$IPT -A FORWARD -i $IF -o $INIF -p tcp --dport 1723 -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
$IPT -A FORWARD -i $IF -o $INIF -p 47 -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
$IPT -A FORWARD -i $INIF -o $IF -p 47 -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT

- Reiniciar o Firestarter

Funcionou perfeitamente ligando de outro portátil. Mas do iPhone ainda não consegui. Mas o problema deve ser outro.

Problema a ligar ao Kanguru no Ubuntu

Recentemente deixei de conseguir ligar ao Kanguru através do Ubuntu. Aliás, o Kanguru ligava-se normalmente (através do Network Manager), mas depois não conseguia abrir nenhuma página.
Verifiquei que o problema tinha a ver com DNS, ao fazer a ligação ele não conseguia obter os endereços dos servidores DNS do Kanguru e usava os valores default (10.11.12.13 e 10.11.12.14).

Uma forma rápida de resolver e que teria que ser feita sempre que efectuava uma nova ligação era reescrever o ficheiro /etc/resolv.conf depois de efectuada a ligação (é neste ficheiro que ficam as definições dos servidores DNS) e colocar o ficheiro da seguinte forma:
nameserver 62.169.67.172
nameserver 62.169.67.171

Estes são os servidores DNS do Kanguru. No entanto isto não era solução, porque sempre que tentava ligar novamente o Kanguru tinha que voltar a repetir.

Entretanto encontrei a solução definitiva:

Editar o ficheiro /etc/ppp/options, procurar por "ipcp-max-failure" (o mais provável é encontrarem uma linha comentada) e colocarem nessa linha:
ipcp-max-failure 30

A partir daí a ligação ao Kanguru passa a funcionar porque o Ubuntu já consegue obter os endereços dos servidores de DNS.

Oracle XE and ORA-12519 errors

I was setting up a virtual machine with:
- Oracle database 10g Express Edition
- Oracle Oc4J (Oracle Containers for J2EE)
- Enterprise Application on OC4J accessing the local database

When I was testing the application, it started to throw errors on the init of the application (the application loads some highly-accessed information from DB to Cache on the init phase):

ORA-12519, TNS:no appropriate service handler found

As I was able to access the database both remotely and locally (through SQL*PLUS), after some research I found that the problem was due to a bug on Oracle DB Express Edition (XE)on how the connections are monitored.

Solution:

Change a system parameter: ALTER SYSTEM SET PROCESSES=150 SCOPE=SPFILE
Restart database

iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode

I started receiving this message the day after I first synchronized my Ipod with Itunes at home. I tried to connect the Ipod while at the office and keep receiving the "Itunes has detected an IPod in recovery mode" and tried several times to restore original settings without result.

Then, a quick Google search and I found the following on a blog post:

If you had received message from iTunes like this,
“iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. you must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes” ,
you musn’t click restore button. It just only because your operating system detected iPod and put it with drive letter that
have been used before. iPod seems to take a drive letter closest to your fixed volumes.
So the solution is change the drive letter from
Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management
or just
Start | Run | compmgmt.msc
or right click My Computer then choose Manage…
then click Disk Management and change the iPod drive letter

The problem was that at my office, some drive letters are occupied by network directories assigned during login on the domain.

It worked for me! Great!
