Where Is My Self Contained?

In this week's featured contribution, we offer an opportunity for deeper reflection about religion and the meaning of life. Andreas Tzortzis, a popular speaker on Islam on the student scene, takes us on a journey of self reflection.

The self is not a physical thing; it is not contained in any cell or biological structure. The most unchallenged and intuitive reality is that we are all aware, but we cannot describe or explain what this awareness is.

Read on and have your say.

Projecting a Positive Image of Islam: Campusalam Resource Spotlight

A major goal of Discover Islam Week is breaking down stereotypes and showcasing a more real Islam. A perfect opportunity to reflect some positivity. If you want to project a more positive image of Islam to other students and staff, what's the best way to go about it?

There are two key words here: one is education, and the other is bridge-building.

Probably much prejudice – of all kinds – is based on ignorance and negative stereotyping. If you wanted, you could start by doing a little fact-finding to discover what principle …

The Christmas Day Bomber and the Campus Extremism Debate

Since the arrest of Umar Faruk Abdulmutallab after a failed attempt to detonate a bomb on an airplane on Christmas Day, there has been a substantial amount of media coverage on his time in Britain.

Much attention has been given to his years as a student at University College London and his role on that campus as the Islamic Society (ISoc) President. This association is making many students and university staff uneasy. Campusalam offers a wealth of information for both staff and students in dealing critically with such controversial issues.

Our opening article overviews press releases from relevant student groups, media reports and crucial Campusalam resources to support both staff and students when accusations of extremism are made on campus.

Under Suspicion: Campusalam Resource Highlight

In our article, The Christmas Day Bombing and the Campus Extremism Debate, we highlighted some resources already available on campusalam.org. The Under Suspicion resource helps students to respond critically and creatively if they or their friends are coming under suspicion from others around them.

'What evidence do you have for this? And if so, why is this happening? Is it a misunderstanding on their part of religious practice, concepts like jihad, and so on? Is it hostility to Islam generally? Is it because of events or activities that you are holding, or how some people are conducting themselves?'

Staff members who have an interest in understanding more about the context of the recent controversy around extremism on campus may find our resource on extremism useful.

'The issue of 'radicalisation' and 'extremism' currently attracts much attention and concern. Universities are places that encourage diversity and openness to all shades of opinion; they can be places where extremists of any kind can target students.

In many cases the greatest risk of extremism on university campuses will come in the form of..'

Who Says Universities are Hotbeds of Extremism?: Featured Contribution

In this week's featured contribution, Zin Derfoufi shares his thoughts on the renewed debate about radicalisation on campus. He critically examines the authority of the myriad of commentators on the subject matter.

'Believe it or not, this issue of extremism in universities has already been debated on campuses across the UK and lost by the drama queens.'

The recent attempt of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a Nigerian and UCL graduate, to blow up a plane has, once again, cast a spotlight over the activities of Muslim students in universities and reignited the debate over the extent of radicalisation on our campuses.''

Leeds University Student Wins the "My Campusalam is..." Competition

The Campusalam Team embarked on a 10 campus tour during Freshers' Week. We asked all the students we could find one question, "Campusalam is about supporting students to make their vision of change a reality. What's your Campusalam?" We collected scores of responses, some inspirational, some incomprehensible. A lot made us laugh ("My Campusalam is no exams!"). Check out our highlight reel of responses. We had a tough time picking a winner, but we finally did. Congratulations to our winner: Nusrat Choudhry from Leeds University! Her winning response, "My Campusalam is breaking down stereotypes among non-Muslims about Islam and that Muslims have about each other." It was a long answer, but it inspired us. It's more than visionary words. Nusrat is working to make her vision of change a reality in her role as Head Sister in the Leeds Islamic Society. As a prize, Nusrat will receive a Creative Vado HD video camera to show the world what she and her friends at Leeds are doing to make positive changes happen on campus. You can see already their creative work during Charity Week. We look forward to their next video with the new HD camera!
Countering Islamophobia: Campusalam Resource Spotlight

What can students do about the rising tide of Islamophobia on campus? This week's Resource Spotlight offers advice on how students can creatively respond....
There are two key words here: one is education, and the other is bridge-building. Much prejudice of all kinds is probably based on ignorance and negative stereotyping. If you wanted, you could start by doing a little fact-finding to discover what principle issues worry your fellow students or staff and address those first.
