Job Description:           The Book Rapport/Festival des mots Manager develops and administers both the youth and the French programs of WordFest. This is a bilingual, full-time, permanent position.

The ideal candidate demonstrates:

• Superior negotiating, problem solving, planning, priority setting and organizational skills
• Excellent written and oral communication in both official languages
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, knowledge of FileMaker and Tessitura an asset
• Strong attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines
• Appreciation and strong knowledge of youth and French literature; knowledge of the educational and Francophone communities inCalgaryand theBowValley
• Ability to motivate others, work independently and as part of a team in an open office environment

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

• Developing Festival program and schedules in conjunction with Director and Artistic Associate
• Liaising with confirmed artists and their publishers
• Collaborating with and providing information to stakeholders in the educational and Francophone communities
• Provide content for websites and social media and ensure sites are maintained
• Managing special projects or events, defined by the Director
• Managing and maintaining databases (Tessitura, FileMaker and Excel)
• Managing school bookings (registrations, invoicing, tracking, receipting, etc.)
• Collaborating with program partners and sponsors as per agreements
• Managing all Book Rapport and Festival des mots seasonal personnel
• Collaborating with the Marketing Department to implement marketing campaigns
• Managing the development of support materials for educators
• Working with the Volunteer Manager to recruit and train any volunteers
• Working closely with Box Office Manager and Accounting to ensure accurate box office reporting and analysis
• Providing an annual strategic plan and comprehensive final report to the Director
• Represent WordFest in the community where appropriate and be available outside-of-office hours

New for this issue: Audio Submissions! Tell us a story in sound. This includes soundscape, documentary, spoken word, author readings, comedy, experimental, etc. Audio pieces do not need to contain words (although they can!) but they should have a narrative progression, i.e. a beginning, middle, and end. Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (PBAI) is looking for a Development and Communications Coordinator to research, plan, and complete funding applications with financial staff, design and produce marketing materials, and manage the firm’s media portfolio and online presence.  This role will report directly to the Principal and Senior Associates.

PBAI is a Toronto based interdisciplinary design firm associated with the University of Waterloo. The firm works in experimental interactive installation and design projects using advanced digital prototyping equipment, as well as traditional professional architectural practice, sculpture, graphic design, and exhibitions projects. Projects in the last two years include installations in Copenhagen, Quebec City, Mexico City, Venice, Reims, Moscow, Toronto, and Salt Lake City. Currently in development are installations for Fundacion Telefonica in Madrid, the City Gallery Wellington in New Zealand, the high-fashion retail outlet Simons at the West Edmonton Mall, and finally a major work for the 18^th Biennale of Sydney in Australia scheduled to open to the public in June, 2012.

The work has received a striking level of international press and blog traffic, and over one million people have viewed and interacted with the work in person. Press exposure includes national and international newspapers (Vanity Fair ‘must see’, Le Figaro, Wall Street Journal, London Times, National Post, Globe and Mail, Le Devoir); television (Vernissage TV, CBC national news, The Discovery Channel), journals oriented to art and design (MARK Magazine, WIRED, Azure, El Niuton) prominent blogs (DeZeen, Designboom, BLDGBLOG and some two hundred citations listed on CUMINCAD, along with inclusions of illustrations and case studies of this specialized ‘responsive architecture’ within research publications and journals including Artificial Life (MIT), Leonardo, and Nature.  A recent nomination for the 2011 Katerva Award was also a particular distinction for the work garnering significant international coverage.

The firm also runs the Toronto division office of Riverside Architectural Press (RAP), a small not for profit publishing house which promotes exchange and debate of exemplary Canadian research in the field of architecture and design. RAP works for elevated awareness of contemporary architecture and design theory, process and fabrication methods within the local design community and in international public forums.

ROLE OVERVIEW

Fundraising

• Write applications to relevant revenue sources for art, technology, science, media, architecture, and academic research together with project managers and support staff
• Work with the Principal, Bookkeeper and Senior Associates to produce annual fundraising  plans
• Manage ongoing fundraising activities
• Identify funding opportunities, measure eligibility, and create summaries to direct priorizing and staffing of application process
• Maintain archive of funding applications

Marketing & Business Development

• Coordinate production and distribution of marketing materials
• Identify prospective markets for retail art products
• Develop relationships with Art Dealers and report on potential opportunities
• Design and develop visual and text communications as required – including media releases, backgrounders, press packages, Q&A, key messages, promotional imagery, etc.
• Respond to media enquiries and filter opportunities
• Identify, develop and recommend policies, procedures, and standards consistent with media best practices

Internal Communications & Administration

• Prepare funding and communications summaries  and reports for the Principal and Senior Associates
• Assist with administrative tasks and other duties as required

REQUIREMENTS

• Post-secondary education in the area of business development, public relations, arts administration or related field
• 2+ years’ professional experience in marketing/communications, fundraising and development
• Excellent verbal , written communication,  and research skills
• Experience with grant writing and funding requests in both the public and private sectors
• Superior communication and management skills including problem solving skills
• Demonstrated ability to multi-task in a fast paced creative environment
• Knowledge of consumer art market
• Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (especially Photoshop & InDesign) an asset
• Graphic design and website development experience  an asset
• High energy, positive attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and high degree of initiative
