Tim Hortons is adding a new cup size Monday, Jan.23.

The brand new cup size will certainly be the biggest cup they have ever provided for sale. The new size will be 24 ozs.

Customers will have to start remembering that a medium is now a small and a large is now a medium. All prices will be staying the same and the new 24 oz extra large will cost $1.90 before taxes.

At least you can still get a decent cup (i use the word cup loosely) for under $2.

Will you remember the new sizes when ordering your "Large" double-double come Monday January 23rd?

Go Transit Fare Hike Approved - Effective Feb 18th, 2012

Today Go Transit requested a Fare Hike that will be effective February 18th, 2012. As of 10 minutes ago it has been approved. Here is the details of the fare hike from the Go Transit website:

As of that date, the cost of an adult single fare will increase incrementally as follows:

30 cent increase on current fares between $4.20 and $5.50;
35 cent increase on current fares between $5.51 and $7.00; and
40 cent increase on current fares greater than $7.00.

Proposed changes to the fare discount structure

Purchasing an adult monthly pass would now save 15% off the cost of 40 single-ride tickets. PRESTO users will continue to save 17.5% off the cost of 40 single-ride tickets.
For students, purchasing a monthly pass would now save 30% off the cost of 40 single-ride tickets. PRESTO student users will continue to save 35% off the cost of 40 single-ride tickets.

This will not make a huge impact on most bank accounts but it is a change, but it can be about $15 more per month to the average monthly commuter. To make it worse it is $180 more per year.

I don't like it but I have to use the Train daily to get to work.

64GB Playbook for $298 at Walmart Canada

Good day everyone. I trust you all had a good weekend? I sure did. It was a very relaxing couple of days off. We finished researching tablets and finally decided, after much back and forth, to go ahead and purchase the Blackberry Playbook.

Now that we had decided to purchase the Playbook I looked online to find a store that had them in stock. Every single store was OUT OF STOCK! Dang! However there was online stock. Being impatient and not wanting to charge to a credit card, I continued my search. Out of chance I found that Wal-Mart had stock in a few local stores and the list price was $298.00. Sweet, not only do they have the stock it is cheaper than other stores (only by $1.99). So we packed the kids in the car and off to Wal-Mart we went.

After bee-lining to the Electronics department I found all the Playbooks but there was a problem. The PlayBooks had gone back up in price to the regular retail value of $698 for the 64gig. Boo! Determined that I wasn't seeing things on their website I spoke with the Department Manager who then told me that all the Playbooks had gone back to regular retail pricing or MSRP and that the sale price had finished a few days earlier. Without missing a beat I explained to her that the Wal-Mart website is listing them all (16gig, 32gig and 64gig) for $298 and also shows the price in her store as $298. Determined to show me wrong, she grabbed the price check gun and proceeded to scan the 64gig Playbook. Tada! $298 popped up on the screen. She was surprised and I was left standing there smiling. After she made a couple of quick calls, and assured me that I will get the Playbook for that price, she happily sold me the Playbook and said "I have 8 more, tell your friends".

I know this blog is about smart spending, debt repayment and savings so let me break down how much the Playbook ended up costing us out of pocket. We had received $200 cash at Christmas time from my parents. So we really only put out $137 (after taxes and environment fee). Pretty good deal eh!?

The PRESTO Card with Go Transit - A GREAT IDEA

Every morning when I arrive at the train station I reach into my messenger bag and pull out my handy, dandy PRESTO Card. "Twoop" goes the card reader, as it quickly - and I mean quickly - flashes up how much money was deducted for my pre-assigned route. I see and hear this repeated a number of times while waiting for the train.

For those that are not familiar with the Presto Card I will explain. The card is basically a "Cash" card that does not have a magnetic stripe. It works with a small antenna built into the card. The bad thing is if a hole or deep enough gash on the card happens then the card is toast. What is really good about the card is how easy it is to add funds to the card.

I have only been using my Presto Card for just about one month now and I LOVE it. I am able to track when I I have used the card, directly on the website and can even see how many times my "fare" has been inspected while riding. Basically a Transit Officer checks for proof of payment by quickly tapping the card on a hand-held reader . What really grabbed my attention about the card was how simple it is to use and also the massive discounts you get on the more you ride on a monthly basis.

Basically if I ride the train 46 times a month, that is each trip one way. If I decided that I am going to go shopping on the weekend near work, especially at the end of the month, then I can a free ride.

Cyber Beg - Would You Like To Help?

Wow, 2012!? That's flippin' great! This is the year. This is MY year. I am going to be vicious towards our debt!

The other day I was looking over my finances to see how we (my wife and I) are doing with our debt management. Turns out we have knocked off about $10,000 in a year. (yippee!) At the rate we are going we will be able to totally get rid of our debt in just under three (3) years. Our debt load total is currently sitting at $41,000 and some change, we started at just over $50,000 in 2009....Yikes!

Earlier in 2011 we swallowed our pride and joined a consolidated credit company that worked with our creditors to lower, if not get rid of, or interest rates on all credit accounts. Twice per month we are sending the company $596 to pay our debts.

With debt becoming a problem around the world not just at home, we (people) need to take a stand and start taking the Debt "crisis" into our own hands.

I find myself sitting and thinking of ways to get rid of this debt faster and I keep coming up with the same solution..."Ask total strangers to spare $1!" It seems so simple. If I was able to convince 41,000 people, total strangers, to spare $1 to help me get rid of my debt then problem would be solved. This simple method of "pay it forward" has successfully been done in the past. There is a woman named Karyn Bosnak. Back in 2002 she lost her job suddenly and was then stuck with $20K in credit card debt. She did what most people do, she didn't want her parents to know. She took it upon herself to start selling her precious items on eBay, placing all the money from the sales directly against her debt, and she also had the great idea to "Cyber Beg" to total strangers. In a very short 20 weeks she had paid of her debt. $13,000+ dollars was "donated" by total strangers.

We are doing our part to pay off our debt. We are placing $1,192 per month against our debt, we will be doing that until it is gone. All I'm asking is for you, the Internet user, to help out by sparing, at the very least, $1. At the end of each week I will be sure to update with how much kindness has been sent our way. Please stay tuned. Oh...I will update the debt meter at the side of the site later today.

Why should you help me out, you ask. Well you would feel better about yourself. Maybe Karma will reward you. When the day comes that our debt is gone, I don't count our Mortgage because that is "Good" debt, I will focus the kindness of total strangers on to another person that is struggling with debt. If you help us, then someday someone might help you when you need it. SO HELP US, and maybe someday, I'll be able to help you.

Net Worth Update - October 2010

I know, I know another net worth update. I'm sure these net worth updates are going to be boring once I start showing increase in the positive area. Personally I really happy about this small increase, it must mean I'm doing something right.

Wow. I $1300 increase in my networth. I'm getting a lot closer to my goal of 2010...getting back in the black.

I predict seeing this goal coming into reality before the end of the year.

Dang, I'm psyched about these new numbers.

Paid off Credit Card

Well today its official. I paid off a credit card today. I actually made the payment on Thursday online. I logged in today and noticed the payment had been processed and the account is down to a big fat ZERO.

By the end of October there will be a Store Card paid off, Children's Place. If you remember a few months ago I wrote about how Citi Cards Canada stopped the PLACE card program. Once we found out they ended the program we worked our budget, and savings, to paying it off quickly.

I'm hoping that the October financial update will increase our net worth closer to the black. That's my goal for 2010, get my networth in the positive and far away from the red.

Stepping Up With My Wallet Open

In 2007 I stepped up at work and applied to fill in a vacant spot, because of maternity leave. The job opening changed my schedule from 12 hour shifts working days and nights to working Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm. In the long run I did not benefit from this job other than being more qualified than others and being the “go to guy” when they, work, got into a jam.

Fast forward a couple years, to the year 2010. Work is in a jam, again, and they needed someone to step up and help out. The position is a temporary job working on a month to month basis. Basically I’ll be my own boss but I’ll be working with the newest equipment in the broadcasting industry to try and get us in the front of the pack and stay in the front. I’m being taken from my crew, of seven years, and placed, once again, in the Monday to Friday crowd working eight hour shifts. Don’t get me wrong, not having to work twelve’s for a few weeks is going to be a nice change of pace.

The cons of this job are the now heavy increase in my budget that my wife and I never planned on. I’m going to have to start taking the train every day. The cost isn’t too bad when you break it down to a daily basis. I’m looking at $16.60 per day, that’s to work and back to my car. A monthly pass is $274.00, which calculates down to $13.70 per day. This month is not worth the monthly pass, it’s already the 12^th on October.

Taking the train daily is not the only option but it is the most affordable way. If I was to drive five days a week I would be looking at the following:

· $50 per week for fuel

· $10 per day in parking (parking isn’t free at work and there is no re-imbursement)

Dishing out that dough a week is going to cost me $100 per week, totalling $400 per month. I know what you’re thinking “Why not carpool?” Carpooling is the best option, however everyone who l work with that lives nearby are all on the 12 hour shift. I carpool now.

In the end, I’m hoping the bosses remember me stepping up and helping out when they needed it. I won’t complain openly about the increase to my budget, I’ll save that for you guys and gals. Maybe in the long run I’ll finally get to move up, get a promotion, I’ve been in the same position for seven plus years, that’s why I’ve been stepping up whenever I can.

Gobble Gobble Gobble Happy Thanksgiving Weekend!

It's Thanksgiving Weekend in Canada. A great time for familys to get together and eat some delicious turkey, ham, turnip, potatoes, some more turkey...yum! I am hungry just typing this.

Over this weekend we have two family get togethers. One dinner at my mother-in-laws and one at my parents house. The dinner at my mother-in-laws is usually a little crazy. My wife has a lot of family that lives close by so they are all there. To save my mother-in-law some money, and headaches, the dinner is a potluck. Needless to say there is usually a fair amount of leftovers for myself, and others, to take home for work or that midnight turkey craving.

The dinner at my moms is quieter, which is nice. Its a little more personal, one on one. I have a lot of family but they are spread out across the province of Ontario, in Montreal and Over in Britain (Scotland and England). So it is a lot harder to get EVERYONE together with out it costing an arm and a leg.

I remember one year, when I was still living at home with my parents, my mom decided she didn't want to cook and my dad, just like all fathers, didn't want to attempt it himself. We went to a banquet hall that was having a catered turkey dinner. It was wonderful. Everything was nice and fresh.

Mywife and I have never actually cooked a thanksgiving dinner yet, not even a Christmas or Easter dinner. We were talking about it yesterday. One day, when the kids are older and our shift work isn't as hectic, we will give it a try. I'm sure its a lot crazy just organizing a family get together then to actually go to one.

How do you plan on spending this Thanksgiving Weekend? I know for my American followers its Columbus Day on Monday. Do any of you have an crazy thanksgiving tales of family nuttyness? I sure am looking forward to reading your comments.

Newspaper Interview

I received a surprise email yesterday evening from a reporter at The Globe and Mail. They found my networthIQ profile and thought I would be a perfect fit for an article about "people who would find it difficult to cover their regular expenses if they missed a paycheque."

I had to think about the offer for a little bit but after speaking with my wife I decided to go ahead with the interview.

I'm not too sure when the article will be published but I will let you know when I know.

I few posts ago I mentioned that I should be finding out what my salary increase and my bonus should be. Well we got our letters on the 17th with the magic numbers.

I`m please with my salary increase, it was a staggering 7.5% increase. Also the bonus was the same amount as last year, 7% of my salary.

The salary increase has moved my pay up almost $200 after taxes every two weeks. With the bonus I`ll receive roughly $2000 after taxes, this amount will get thrown at debt, paying off about 4 small amounts, but hey that`s $2000 I know longer owe.

That is it for the little update on the salary. I still think I might take the wife out for a special dinner...

A Decrease Is Better Than A Increase

I was able to set aside sometime today to not only update my networth but also update my lovely progress bars on the right of your screen. As you can see I have 100% cleared my Friends debts. All the other bars have inched up enough for you to actually see the change.

Admittedly I`m pretty happy witht he changes in numbers. We are getting more agressive with getting money together to pay off what we can asap. We are going to pay off the lowest amounts first helping us mentally feel like we are getting somewhere with this debt load.

Net Worth Update - September 2010

Hey everyone. As I have promised, here is the numbers update for the site. I`m sure not everyone is interested in the small change but as long as the numbers decrease then I`m thrilled, it means I`m doing something right.

The cash went down because we used it for spending money in Florida. We are building that back up but I believe it will decrease again with the pending Christmas shopping. The next goal that has been placed in front of m wife and I is to get our Emergency Fund up to $1000 ASAP. Then we can focus on other savings.

Your Account Is Being Closed

On September 16th I received a letter in the mail from one of my credit card companies, Citi Cards Canada. The first though that came to mind was "Great! I'm not paying them good enough". Well it turns out this letter had something different in mind.

Here is the first paragraph from the letter:

"I'd like to thank you for having been a Citi MasterCard cardmember. We have appreciated your business. As a result of the sale of a portion of Citi's Canadian credit card portfolio, your Citi MasterCard account will be closed on November 1, 2010"

No where in the letter does it state how my credit history will be effected. Will it appear as the account was closed due to a sale of the company or closed by the granter, making me look delinquent.

I'm going place a class to them in the next couple of days to figure out how this is all going to be handled.

Pay off Debt or Save or Spend

In only a couple of days from now I should be finding out what, if any, my bonus amount should be. With a lot of stirring up happening at my place of work we (the employees) are pretty confident that the bonus will be a pretty significant amount.

My question for ou fellow bloggers is what to do with the extra money. I am leaning towards paying off debt, which is probably the best bet. Of course I could always save it for a "rainy" day or just spend spend spend.

Which option do you think will be best. The amount we are talking about here is at minimum $2000 plus dollars, after the government takes their share.

Net Worth Update - August 2010

Nearly a $1000 decrease in networth for the month of August. I'm glad I can explain this one.

The decrese is because of my available cash and bonds. We took a much needed family vacation and the cash and bonds was our spending money. I still do not use my credit cards, I have a strict budget and pay cash or bank card (interac).

The months of September and October should see an increase in my networth, hopefully into the black again.

At about 1:30pm yesterday afternoon I received and email from the company that I applied to. It was quick and to the point but was a nice email to receive. Basically I did not get the job, however it came down to me and one other candidate.

The person who got the job had a little more recent experience in the job that was up for grabs, I hadn't done what they were looking for since college, which was 7 years ago. Still pretty good considering it came down to me and just one other person.

I think my wife was a little happy to hear that we didn't have to move from Ontario to BC but I quickly stomped on that happy thought by applying for a Producer job in Manitoba. At least Manitoba is a very short flight from home.

On to other things, our Florida trip is only three days away. The kids are getting really excited, I'm excited and so is my wife. I just can't wait to get there and start to hang out with all the old Disney gang. When we get to Orlando on Tuesday morning we are going to head to Sea World in the afternoon. I am hoping to try the Sharks Deep Dive Interaction

Basically I get to live Shark Week for real. You've gotta love Shark Week.

Anyways, hopefully I'll be able to update again before we take off next week.

Phone Interview Update

Okay, I had a phone interview the other day for a job in British Columbia. The feeling I got was that the interview went well, i stumbled a little bit with my answers...I didn't want to come of to "know it all" about my job, in the end I was told that they like to have a second interview with the qualified candidates for all their jobs. The last thing said to me was "expect a phone call". I was surprised.

The rest of Wednesday came and went, then I was at work on Thursday keeping myself busy. I called into the home mailbox to check messages, no luck. "Oh well", I thought, "I didn't need the job".

Later in the afternoon i was checking my personal GMail account and noticed an email saying "2nd interview". I clicked on it, expecting some SPAM mail, but it turned out to be the second interview. I was excited, I guess I really do want to work somewhere else?. The time that they wanted to have the second interview wasn't going to work for me because I would be at work, that wouldn't be a good thing to do at work.

Today, Friday, I just had the second interview on the the phone, it lasted about 15 minutes, and it was mentioned that the job was between myself and three other candidates. How cool is that?

I'm getting a little excited, I wonder if the pay will be worth it?. The decision will apparently be made today as to who to offer the job to. If I get the call I'll be pleasantly surprised, it will be good to know i can still nail an interview.

Phone Interview Today

Last week, I believe, I wrote that i had updated my resume. When I did that I got the suden urge to look for other jobs in my field. I applied for jobs in the States; California, New York, Florida and Boston. That Katy Perry song "California Gurls (feat. Snoop Dogg)" really got me "California Dreamin'", LOL.

Anyways, four days after I applied for a job, this one is in Canada, I got an email for a Interview Request. I was shocked, I guess my resume was what they were looking for. So today at 4:30pm ET I will have a one hour phone interview for a job in British Columbia. To my surprise I am actually nervous about this interview but I'm also excited. The thing is I do not need this job, it was more of a apply and see. Kind of for shits and giggles, pardon my french.

Will I take the job if they offer it to me, sure but the salary has to be right. Having to relocate to BC can be a pain especially with a wife, two young kids, a dog and two cats. However on the other hand maybe I can take the offer to my current boss and see if they can match it or at least come close, so I don't have to uproot my family.

My Goral for applying was just to see if there were any bites and I got one right away. Maybe it will be a good adventure, especially a story, for the future. Hopefully it goes well today and I'll have something new to tell all of you readers.

The Bank took my house

The bank taking my house is a huge nightmare of mine. Thankfully that situation happening to me does not appear to be in my future, but you knows what could happen around the corner. Take my neighbours for example. The are a family of four with a dual income and the bank might take their house.

Let me explain. He works just like me, working 12 hour shifts, bringing in pretty good coin. She works a good job in the medical field. They were telling my wife and I they other day that if he has to go on strike, which is pending, and it lasts more than a month or two then the bank will take their house. They just cannot handle the strike financially.

It is scary to think that all it takes is a crazy strike, that is more than likely not that important, for you to lose your house. Luckily for myself and my wife we are not in unions that would make us strike to the point of losing our homes.

After hearing about this I did a little hunting around the net and I was surprise to not find any information about insurance that can help protect you if a strike happens.

Do any of you fellow readers have any information that I could pass along to my neighbours

Capital One Lowered My Interest Rate

Normally on this site, as you may have noticed, I don't normally say what credit cards I'm dealing with, but this month is different.

I received my new statement in the mail, yes the old fashion snail mail because Capital One still doesn't have paper-less, the other day and I was looking it over making sure everything appeared okay. Then it jumped out at me, I got charged way way way less interest.
Underneath my current account activity was a nice note saying "Congratulations! Becuase you have been such a steady account holder with no let payments we have lowered your interest rate." The rate went from 25.9% APR to 14.5%. I'm very please with that, the accout will be paid off a lot faster now.
