[NOT worksafe] Sage takes you from writing a script to finding voice actors, effective casting, easy editing in three distinct parts and giving the play a final coat of polish. She demonstrates the struggles faced by new (and experienced) producers — drawing on her years of experience creating plays for her own podcast — and explains the best ways to lure unsuspecting (yet talented) voice actors to volunteer in the salt mines of audiodrama.

Crafting a professional, compelling audio play requires so much more than stitching a few voices together. Learn how from Sage.

How do we deal with the inevitable problems that arise in communities? We talk a lot about community in Social Media circles. Communities grow up organically around our individual interests; but how do you act as a catalyst to form community? How do we deal with the inevitable problems that arise in communities? We've all witnessed times when the community values are breached or sprained; how do we handle those situations when they occur? When someone tries to join a community, how do we make them feel at home?

This session is the perfect opportunity to discuss the development and navigation of communities as we start to face real-world problems in our cyber-worlds, including:

When does a community get too big?

When is a new community seen as competition and get treated as such by others?
How do we define and sub-define our groups?
Are communities, commodities? Can they be bought and sold? Should they?

[NOT worksafe] Why would you use social media tools such as facebook, IM clients, blogging, and, of course, podcasting to reach people? Would anyone really care? Dave will draw on his experiences as an academic who podcasts his lectures and uses social media tools to engage his students. He has been podcasting his lectures for a little over two years and routinely uses facebook, MSN messenger and comments on his blog for class discussion. Many academics, professionals and organizations are reticent, if not downright frightened, of using these new tools to get the word out about a subject.

Dave shares the results of a survey about his students’ use of social media for academic purposes and will compare student grades in classes where lectures were podcasted and where they were not. He argues (with real data) that these tools help students learn, and that these tools can help anyone engage a potential audience.
