Burnett wins SCORE Championship with Can-Am Maverick 1000R

Can-Am Side-By-Side Pilot Cory Sappington Third At 2014 Baja 1000

Valcourt, Québec, November, 19, 2014 – Can-Am® Maverick™ side-by-side racers competed at the 2014 Tecate SCORE International Baja 1000 race on the Baja Peninsula, tallying one Class 19 podium and the overall season championship. Racing solo, Marc Burnett (Burnett Motorsports / Can-Am) finished the endurance race in sixth to secure BRP / Can-Am its the first ever SCORE Baja 1000 season class side-by-side title. The Desert Toyz / Can-Am team of Cory Sappington also had a solid race, earning a third-place podium finish at this year’s gruelling 1,275-mile race held in Mexico.

Marc Burnett, who also won two SCORE International Class 19 rounds this year, took sixth at the 2014 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 desert endurance race in Mexico to capture the class championship. He drove all 1,275 miles behind the wheel of his No. 1905 MB Motorsports / Monster / Can-Am Maverick 1000R.

“We were impressed with effort put forth by all our teams, but especially Marc Burnett, who not only won the SCORE Class 19 championship with his Monster Maverick, but also completed the entire 2014 Baja 1000 ironman. With two wins on the year and then this final outstanding effort, he deserves a lot of credit for finishing strong,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “We were absolutely thrilled to see Cory Sappington’s Desert Toyz Can-Am Maverick earn a prestigious Baja 1000 podium spot with such a difficult course.”

The 2014 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 featured a challenging course that snaked its way through the rugged desert and hit both coasts on the Baja Peninsula, winding 1,275 miles from Ensenada to La Paz, Baja California, Mexico. Nineteen side-by-sides entered Class 19, but only eight finished in the allotted time.

Can-Am Maverick 1000R pilot Marc Burnett (Burnett Motorsports / Can-Am / Monster) came into the most prestigious SCORE race with the Class 19 points lead, having won both the Baja 500 and San Felipe 250. By simply finishing the extended Baja 1000 course, Burnett could wrap up his first career side-by-side championship for himself and Can-Am. However, he also decided to compete the Baja solo (ironman), driving more than 1,200 miles alone.

The No. 1917 team of Murray Racing / Can-Am / ITP was also in the running for the overall title, having reached the podium at the series opener and posting a win earlier in the year at the Imperial Valley 250. The final Can-Am team consisted of the No. 1904 Desert Toyz / Can-Am Maverick of Cory Sappington, who came into Baja fourth in the class standings.

Burnett battled the entire race, competing much of it in the top five and at one point (San Ignacio region) held the lead in his No. 1904 Maverick. Baja is as much about luck and mechanical survival as it is skill and horsepower. Burnett, like many teams, was faced with issues he had to overcome, from extreme fatigue to navigational challenges to both scheduled and unscheduled mechanical fixes. Despite the circumstances, he was in third place and pushing for the podium at the 1,100-mile marker before hitting a nasty silt bed. It was here on the course, where Sappington found his way around Burnett and moved into third. Burnett knew he only had to finish to capture the title, so he valiantly drove on, overcoming another delay, to the finish line and the 2014 SCORE Class 19 championship.

“This year’s Baja 1000 was a true Baja challenge. The course was 1,275 miles of pure hell. I was definitely feeling the burn coming into the finish. A lot of people said there was no way I could ‘ironman’ this race, but boy did I prove so many people wrong,” said Burnett. “This season is dedicated to a very special lady, my grandmother, who passed away 11 months ago. I want to thank my team (and) my cousins for all their hard work throughout the year. I couldn’t have done it without them. I also thank all my key sponsors and Can-Am for giving me the opportunity to race one of their machines.”

Facing a grueling 1,275-mile course and 18 competitors, Desert Toyz / Can-Am Maverick MAX 1000R pilot Cory Sappington and his team was one of only eight Class 19 finishers of the 2014 Baja 1000. The team captured a third-place podium finish in Class 19.

Sappington’s Desert Toyz Maverick MAX outlasted much of the competition and withstood the gnarly terrain while running another consistent race. The team, which was outside of the top five at certain points, maintained its composure and patiently completed the grueling course in a time of 37:15:07.188. That finishing time was good for third on Class 19 (Pro) SxS class podium.

“This is the first time having my own crew and car and we’re thrilled to finish and make the Baja 1000 podium,” said Sappington. “We pushed it for 1,275 miles, for 35-plus hours of 8,000 RPM and not a hiccup. The Maverick MAX ran awesome – super tough! I can’t believe how much punishment we put this near stock vehicle through and it held strong.”

Valcourt, Québec, October 28, 2014 – Kyle Chaney won the 2014 XC1 Modified SxS championship, Marcus Pratt took home the XC2 Limited SxS title, both in Can-Am® Maverick™ 1000R side-by-side vehicles, and Bryan Buckhannon captured the 4×4 Pro title on his Renegade® 800R X® xc at the pinked-out AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country series finale in Crawfordsville, Ind. Can-Am Racers posted podium sweeps in both the premier 4×4 Pro and XC1 Modified SxS classes at the Ironman event, concluding the year in dominating fashion.

<img class="size-full wp-image-5689" alt="Kyle Chaney piloted his No. 8 Can-Am Maverick (JB Racing / Turnkey UTV / ITP) to the 2014 GNCC SxS Championship in the XC1 Modified class.

“This particular GNCC season was amazing because we won every class where our team-supported racers competed in,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “Kyle Chaney put together a very consistent season, easily winning the XC1 Modified class in his Maverick 1000R. Bryan Buckhannon simply outran the competition on his way to winning the inaugural 4×4 Pro division, a class that saw us take the top three spots. Factor in our other titles and the podium sweeps at Ironman and we put a big exclamation point on 2014 – our best season ever.”

The Ironman GNCC finale, one of the most popular and well-attended events on the annual 13-race schedule, was held on nearby farmland, complete with hills, creeks, mud, woods and a man-made MX course outside of Crawfordsville. Along with it’s dramatic championship story lines, Ironman is also hugely popular for its proximity to Halloween and because participants and fans wear pink to promote breast cancer awareness.

<img class="size-full wp-image-5688" alt="The AMSOIL GNCC side-by-side podium was made up of all Can-Am Maverick race teams. (From left) ZMS / Can-Am driver Zach Zakowski was second, JB Racing / Can-Am pilot Tim Farr won and Larry Hendershot Jr. took third to complete the XC1 Modified class and overall podium sweeps in Indiana.

With a 28-point lead heading into the final round, Kyle Chaney (Chaney Racing / Turnkey UTV / Can-Am) simply needed to finish in order to capture the XC1 Modified class championship, but he did much better than that. The Ohio native finished a very solid eighth in a field of almost 40 side-by-side vehicles, coming from 14th after lap one, to capture the first GNCC side-by-side racing title for Can-Am. He ended up winning by 24 points over second place.

“It still hasn’t sunk in yet that we got the championship. It’s still unbelievable. I knew I would win it some day, I just needed a good team behind me to make it happen and that’s what Can-Am and the JB team has provided,” said Chaney. “This set up worked well for us this year and we will be going with the same one next season.”

Chaney wasn’t the only Can-Am Maverick 1000R racer making news at Ironman, as JB Racing / Can-Am driver Tim Farr (with co-pilot and GNCC WXC champion Angel Knox) won the final round to move into third place in the final class standings. Farr earned his third podium of the year and was joined on the class and overall podiums by ZMS / Can-Am racer Zac Zakowski and Hendershot Performance / Can-Am pilot Larry Hendershot Jr. Maverick 1000R drivers earned five of the top eight finishes in the XC1 Modified class. Can-Am also scored the XC2 Limited SxS class crown, as Marcus Pratt (Team Jack’s II / Can-Am) earned enough points at the Ironman GNCC to grab the season championship.

ATV Parts Plus / Can-Am Renegade racer Bryan Buckhannon won the first GNCC 4×4 Pro class by notching four wins and 12 podiums, including a solid second place run at the 2014 Ironman finale.

Can-Am ATV 4×4 racers were also dominant this season, winning all four 4×4 utility classes. Bryan Buckhannon earned the 4×4 Pro class championship, posting four victories and 12 podiums aboard his ATV Parts Plus / Can-Am Renegade 800R X xc. He edged fellow Renegade pilot and 2014 Ironman winner Kevin Trantham by 18 points. Trantham had four wins and nine podiums. BNR / Can-Am Renegade rider Rob Smith took third place in the 4×4 Pro class points and at Ironman, giving Can-Am a podium sweep on the year.

“It feels great to get the championship. It was a lot of work, but it paid off. The 4×4 Pro class raised the bar and I really wanted to win the class, so I came back [from retirement]. Now I think I have to race it one more year just to defend the title. I have to thank Can-Am and all of my sponsors for helping me make this happen, and hopefully we can do it again next season,” said Buckhannon.

<img class="size-full wp-image-5691" alt="Renegade 800R X xc racer Kevin Trantham won the 4x4 Pro class at Ironman.
2014 4×4 A/B class champion Tanner Bowles, Cory Bartlett and Michael Edwards ended the year 1-2-3 for Can-Am in the 4×4 A/B ranks. Terry Whitesides (4×4 Sr.) and Nick Eichelbeger (4×4 C) also ended up as 2014 class champions, competing on Renegade 4x4s.

Maverick 1000R racers also competed at the Best In The Desert (BITD) BlueWater Desert Challenge in Arizona, and the Texhoma Quad Racing Association (TQRA) ATV Pro Challenge in Texas.

<img class="size-full wp-image-5676" alt="Can-Am Maverick 1000R pilot Zac Zakowski (right) and co-pilot Eric von Sprecken earned a fourth-place finish at the series finale to capture the 2014 IATVHSS Open UTV class title this past weekend in Carlisle, Iowa.
“Zac Zakowski fought hard all season, battling back from a knee injury, to capture the UTV championship with his Zakowski Motorsports-backed Can-Am Maverick 1000R. Zac, his team and family showcase unmatched passion for off-road racing, their fellow racers and the Can-Am brand, and we’re so pleased to have such a devoted driver bring home a championship,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am.

IATVHSS – FInale

Zac Zakowski piloted his colorful, No. 990 Zakowski Motorsports / Turnkey UTV / Can-Am Maverick 1000R to the 2014 IATVHSS Open UTV Championship with a solid top-five finish at the series finale held at Blue Ridge Run in central Iowa. Zakowski only needed to finish the race in order win the title. While leading the race on lap four, Zakowski made the decision to pull over and finish the race under his terms. He ended up fourth, but easily earned enough points for the season title.

<img class="size-full wp-image-5677" alt="Zakowski and his No. 990 Zakowski Motorsports / Can-Am Maverick 1000R, wraps up its racing season this weekend at the Ironman GNCC finale in Crawfordsville, Ind.

“This was one of the hardest races I have done. We had to be smart and let competitors go by so that we could run our own pace and focus on finishing the race and winning the championship. I have to thank my co-pilot/co-driver Eric von Sprecken for all his help. This marks our first big cross-country championship in a UTV with more to come,” said Zakowski.

TQRA – ATV Pro Challenge

The TQRA ATV Pro Challenge in Memory of Caleb Moore was held at Underground MX in Kemp, Texas. The event, which was doused by heavy rains on Friday evening, featured both ATV and side-by-side vehicle racing. Cody and Hunter Miller (Louis Powersports / Turnkey UTV / Can-Am) competed at the event with their Maverick 1000R vehicles. Despite a last-minute change that forced the side-by-side competitors to race only on the MX track, Cody followed up his solid fourth-place qualifying time with a second-place podium finish.

<img class="size-full wp-image-5678" alt="Cody Miller (Can-Am X-Team) finished second in the UTV Open class with his Louis Powersports / Turnkey UTV / Can-Am Maverick 1000R at the Texhoma Quad Racing Association's Pro Challenge Motocross in memory of Caleb Moore event held in Texas.

“We were able to hit every jump all the way to the downside with our Maverick,” said Cody. “I came out third off the start and after a six-lap battle I ended up second. A big thanks to Can-Am, Elka, Turnkey UTV, DWT, SSI, Beard and HMF.”

BITD – BlueWater Desert Challenge

The Can-Am / Murray Racing / ITP team finished the two-day Best In The Desert BlueWater Desert Challenge fourth in its class and fifth overall. More than 20 side-by-side vehicles competed in the UTV Pro ranks, with only 11 finishing the race.

The No. 1917 Can-Am Maverick MAX 1000R, piloted by Derek and Jason Murray (Can-Am / Murray Racing / ITP), took fourth at the BITD BlueWater Desert Challenge in Arizona to stay in the top three in the UTV Pro class points standings with one round remaining on the year.

For brothers Derek and Jason Murray, the top-five run kept their BITD finishing streak alive. It also kept the No. 1917 Can-Am Maverick MAX 1000R race team in third place in the Class 19 (UTV Pro) standings with one race remaining on the season. Cory Sappington (Desert Toyz / Can-Am) also tallied a top-10 finish in his Maverick 1000R at the event held in Parker, Ariz.

“It was a rough course. We are very proud of this race being our team’s 30th consecutive BITD finish,” said the Murrays. “We could not have the success without the help from our entire crew and the best sponsors and companies in the industry.”

ATV and Side-By-Side Racers Tally Numerous Podiums

Valcourt, Québec, Oct. 8, 2014 – Can-Am® ATV and side-by-side racers earned five class wins and 15 total class podiums at the ITP Powerline Park Grand National Cross Country race in Ohio. Kyle Chaney topped the UTV overall podium in his Maverick™ 1000R, while Can-Am Renegade® 4×4 Pro class racers Bryan Buckhannon and Kevin Trantham both finished on the 10 a.m. session overall podium. Texas Off-Road Nationals and Can-Am racer Hunter Miller won both the ATV Pro and UTV Expert classes at round seven in Texas.

“It was a dominating weekend for team Can-Am and our racers at both the Powerline GNCC in Ohio and the TORN race in Texas. Class wins are always important in terms of winning championships, but anytime one of your racers makes the overall podium, like Kyle Chaney, Bryan Buckhannon and Kevin Trantham, it’s even better,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “Hunter Miller won two classes in Texas to take the points lead in the ATV Pro class and move to within eight points of the UTV Expert class leader.”

Powerline Park GNCC

A chilly Powerline Park hosted round 12 of the AMSOIL GNCC ATV series and also round five of its six-leg UTV Championship series. Can-Am / Chaney Racing / Turnkey UTV racer and current UTV XC1 Modified points leader Kyle Chaney came from fifth place after lap one to take the class win at Powerline Park and the top stair of the UTV overall podium. It was the third straight victory for Chaney, who now owns a 28-point lead heading into the final round. Team Jack’s Excavating / Can-Am and Team JB Off-Road / Hendershot / Can-Am took fourth and fifth at Powerline Park.

The No. 8 Chaney Racing / Turnkey UTV / Can-Am Maverick 1000R (pilotd by Kyle Chaney) has a 28-point lead in the AMSOIL GNCC XC1 Modified class after winning the UTV overall and class this past weekend at the ITP Powerline Park GNCC in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

“I am beyond excited to make it three in a row and build a nice points cushion. It has been a great season so far, but I couldn’t have gotten up here without my mechanics, dad and co-pilot (Chris Bithell),” said Chaney. “The Maverick was working great and handled well. We had a lot of work to do to claim the lead, and we still have a lot to do at the Ironman finale.”

Team Jack’s Excavating II / Can-Am took second in the XC2 Limited (UTV) class in a Maverick 1000R at Powerline Park to give it an eight-point lead heading into the series finale, Oct. 25-26, at the Ironman GNCC in Crawfordsville, Ind. The No. 311 Can-Am / Jack’s team took third in the XC2 ranks.

Can-Am 4×4 ATV racers won four classes and took 11 of the 12 total podiums in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Two of those racers, 4×4 Pro class racers Bryan Buckhannon (ATV Parts Plus / Can-Am) and Kevin Trantham (Can-Am X-Team) went 1-2 in their class and also stood on the 10 a.m. overall podium in second and third place, respectively. Both compete in the series on a Can-Am Renegade® 800R X® xc and are currently first and second in the class point standings. Jordan Phillips, who took the class holeshot and led two laps, ended up third to complete the Can-Am 4×4 Pro class sweep in Ohio. BNR / Can-Am pilot Rob Smith took fourth and maintained his third-place position in the class points standings.

“Midway through the race, I battled back and forth with Jordan (Phillips) and ended up making the pass stick and keeping the lead for the final lap,” said Buckhannon. “My Can-Am worked well. I am happy to be leaving with valuable points for the 4×4 Pro championship.”

Can-Am won all three 4×4 ATV amateur classes, swept both the 4×4 A/B and Senior (40+) class podiums, and had four additional ATV podium finishers at round 11 of the GNCC series as well. Cory Bartlett won his third consecutive 4×4 A/B class event. Nick Eichelberger notched his eighth win (sixth in a row) of the year aboard his Can-Am Renegade to capture the 4×4 C title. Forrest Whorton won Senior (40+) class and was joined on the podium by Chris Bragg and Glenn McConnell. Can-Am racers Rich Little II (4×4 C, second), Larry Lipley (4×4 C, third), Joe Sichelstiel (19+ C, second), Brian Foltz (Senior A/B 38+, third) also earned class podiums riding Can-Am.

TORN – Caddo Creek

Coming into round seven of TORN, Can-Am X-Team teammates Cody and Hunter Miller were in tight points races in both the UTV Expert and ATV pro classes. However, round seven belonged to Hunter as the elder Miller brother earned victories in both classes. It was his second UTV Expert class win of 2014. His third straight ATV Pro class win (fifth of the year) put him in the points lead with two races remaining. Cody trails by only eight points.

“TORN went well for me this weekend. The track was very open and fast,” said Hunter. “Only six points (counting drops) separates the UTV class leader, Cody and myself in the overall standings with two rounds remaining. We will be fighting hard for this championship!”

Can-Am GNCC Racers Win Five Morning Classes; Zakowski Dominant in Iowa

Valcourt, Québec, September 24, 2014 – The JB Off-Road / Hendershot Performance / Can-Am® X-Team recently captured two regional racing championships with its Maverick™1000R X® rs side-by-side vehicle. Can-Am ATV racers also won five morning classes, the morning overall and all four 4×4 classes, at round 11 of the AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country series in Pennsylvania. In Iowa, Zac Zakowski earned three wins racing his Can-Am ATV and side-by-side.

(From left) Larry Hendershot Sr., Larry Jr., and JB Racing owner Jody Bateman won two side-by-side class titles together this year with their JB Off-Road / Hendershot Performance-backed Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs. (Photo supplied by Hendershot Performance)

“Hendershot Performance had a fabulous season, winning both the AWRCS UTV Open class championship and the WEXCR UTV title. Larry Hendershot Jr., and his team have done a spectacular job this season putting the Maverick in the spotlight,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “It was a good weekend for our ATV woods racers, as our team of GNCC 4×4 racers continued their championship chases by winning all four 4×4 classes at round 11 and Zac Zakowski put together a dominating weekend in Iowa.”

Hendershot – Double Championship

JB Off-Road / Hendershot Performance / Can-Am wrapped up the UTV Open class season title of the American Woods Racing Championship Series (AWRCS). At round six of the AWRCS series held in Parker, Pa., Larry Hendershot Jr., earned a top-10 finish to push his No. 44 Can-Am Maverick to the UTV Open class championship, despite missing the podium for just the second time all year. Two victories and two second-place finishes, along with his recent finish, gave Hendershot enough of a points advantage to secure the season title.

“I would like to thank all of our 2014 sponsors for making this championship run possible. A special thanks goes out to Can-Am, Jody Bateman and the crew at JB Racing, Larry Sr. and the crew at Hendershot Performance, Racer Tech, ITP, FOX shocks, Yoshimura and SSI Decals. This 2014 Maverick 1000R X rs is the best handling and most powerful side-by-side I’ve piloted,” said Hendershot Jr.

Hendershot Jr. also captured the Woods Extreme XC Racing (WEXCR) UTV championship earlier in September after winning the final round held at a very muddy Anderson Acres in southeastern Ohio. The team earned its second victory of the year, to go along with two, second-place finishes, pushing it to the front of the UTV Open class point standings.

GNCC – Round 11

The Car-Mate Mountain Ridge GNCC was held in Central City, Pa. Can-Am racers captured the 10 a.m. session overall, the 4×4 Pro class overall, four amateur class wins and 10 of 12 total podium spots in the four 4×4 classes at Round 11.

Rob Smith (BNR Motorsports / Can-Am) earned his second 4×4 Pro class victory of 2014 to expand his current third-place position in the class points race. Can-Am racer Tanner Bowles grabbed the 4×4 Pro class holeshot, but it was Smith who earned the official leader tag of all four laps at Mountain Ridge and the 10 a.m. session overall aboard his Can-Am Renegade® 800R 4×4. Current 4×4 Pro class points leader Bryan Buckhannon (ATV Parts Plus / Can-Am) also put his Renegade ATV on the podium, finishing second in the class and second overall during the 10 a.m. session. He has an 18-point lead over fellow Can-Am Renegade racer Kevin Trantham, who was fourth at round 11.

“This was a great win. How many others can win the morning overall with a stock motor? I can’t think of another brand that is capable,” said Smith. “The dust was thick, but my Can-Am handled it. It was awesome in the rocks and had a ton of power in wide-open sections.”

Bryan Buckhannon (ATV Parts Plus / Can-Am) finished second overall behind Smith in the 10 a.m. session and in the 4×4 Pro ranks to extend his points lead over second place.

Other 4×4 class wins went to 4×4 A/B class racer Cory Bartlett, 4×4 C class pilot Nick Eichelberger and 4×4 Senior (40+) rider Forrest Whorton. Bartlett and Whorton have each won back-to-back races, while Eichelberger has five successive wins. Joseph Sichelstiel also notched his first win of the year in the 19+ C class on a Can-Am.

IATVHSS

Can-Am racer Zac Zakowski drove his Zakowski Motorsports-backed Maverick to two class victories in one day and followed those with a 4×4 Open class win the next day on his Renegade 800R ATV at the sixth stop on the Iowa ATV Hare Scramble Series schedule held in Beaconsfield, Iowa. Zakowski won both UTV Open class events on Saturday’s doubleheader to take over the class points lead. Then, in his first race back on his ATV since his knee surgery, Zakowski won the 4×4 Open class for the clean sweep.

Zac Zakowski won three total classes (and took over the UTV Open class points lead) at the Iowa ATV Hare Scramble Series race this past weekend in Iowa.
“So much work, dedication, and sacrifice goes into what we did this weekend. Taking all three wins we entered in the IATVHSS race, with two of those being both SxS races in one day, was very rewarding. I hope to keep this up for our fans and sponsors,” said Zakowski.

Valcourt, Québec, August 21, 2014 – Can-Am® ATV and side-by-side racers competed at the 2014 Heartland Challenge endurance race, the Vegas To Reno Best In The Desert series and round eight of the New England ATV Motocross series, earning podiums in all three events.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-5646" alt="Open UTV Team Jack's / Can Amdrivers Marcus and Mouse Pratt won the Open UTV class and UTV overall with a time of 03:58:43 at the 2014 Heartland Challenge in Carlisle, Iowa.
“Our team of Can-Am ATV and side-by-side racers had a busy-but-successful weekend across the US. The Murrays earned a hard-fought third-place finish in a very difficult Vegas-to-Reno race while our other sibling teams, in the Pratts and Millers, notched big wins in Iowa,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “From endurance racing in Iowa and the Nevada desert to motocross in Maine, our racers again proved Can-Am is an excellent choice for serious competitors.”

Team Murray Racing / Can-Am / ITP racers and brothers Derek and Jason Murray claimed third in the 1900 P class at the 2014 General Tire BITD Vegas-To-Reno race in Nevada.

Heartland Challenge

The 2014 Heartland Challenge endurance race in Carlisle, Iowa, featured classes for side-by-sides and both 4×4 and sport ATVs. Three classes (800cc, 900cc and Open) of side-by-sides competed during a four-hour format, while the ATVs, which included Pro, Series Challenge, 4×4, Ironman, Women’s and age classes ran for 10 hours.

Marcus and Mouse Pratt of Team Jack’s Excavating / Can-Am won the UTV Open class in their Maverick. The Pratt brothers excelled during the four-hour side-by-side portion of the Heartland Challenge, winning their class and taking the overall victory as well. The team didn’t get the best start and ended up taking a wrong line, which ultimately forced them to make up time. However, they stayed focused, remained patient and meticulously picked off competitors one at a time on their way to the front.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-5637" alt="Brothers Marcus and Mouse Pratt of Team Jack’s Excavating / Can-Am won the UTV Open class in their Maverick at the Heartland Challenge in Iowa.

“We had a hiccup at the beginning, but we just took our time and started picking them off one at a time and conserving our vehicle. The Maverick was unbelievable today, and between Mouse and it, they were a force to be reckoned with today,” said Marcus Pratt.

Hunter Miller and Cody Miller (Louis Powersports / Can-Am) competed In the ATV Series Challenge class, representing Team Texas Quad Racing Association (TQRA). The two-man team won their class and ended up second overall, logging 36 laps in a time of 10:11.01.

“We had an awesome race. Our Can-Am DS 450s ran great with Elka shocks. We just tried to keep it consistent, because it got a little rough at the end. We got the lead after about eight laps and just ran a good race and took the win,” said Cody Miller.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-5638" alt="Cody Miller and his brother Hunter teamed up to win the ATV Series Challenge class and take second overall aboard their Can-Am DS 450 ATVs at the annual Iowa endurance race.
Team Trantham (Kevin Trantham and Mike Edwards) claimed the 4×4 Pro class win for Can-Am and took fourth overall out of 70 teams. The team led the 4×4 pro class from start to finish, and ran so well that they used the same Outlander for all 10 hours. The Hicklin Elite team claimed second in the 4×4 Pro class on a Renegade 4×4.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-5639" alt="The Pro 4x4 Utility podium was an all-Can-Am affair, featuring: Trantham Racing (win, center), Team Hicklin Elite (right) and Team Leers Cycle Center.

BITD Vegas To Reno

The No.1917 Murray Racing / Can-Am Maverick piloted by brothers Derek and Jason Murray, claimed third in the 1900 P class at the 2014 General Tire BITD Vegas-To-Reno race. The Murrays compiled a time 25 minutes faster than their winning time of a year ago, but the 2014 V2R course was more challenging and competition more fierce.

Derek Murray started in 18th and covered the first 200 miles rather easily, picking off roughly 10 other teams along the way. Jason took control from there and, over the course of 200 miles, put the team into third place. With Derek back behind the wheel, the team held onto the No. 3 spot all the way to the finish. It was the Murray’s best BITD finish of the year.

“The Can-Am Maverick ran great out there, especially with all the elevation changes,” said Jason Murray. “It feels great to get a third-place finish with this race counting for double points. It really gives our team a good boost of motivation for the rest of the racing season.”

NEATV-MX 8

The NEATV-MX series stopped at MX207 in Lyman, Maine, for round eight, a rain make-up date. Can-Am racers Travis Moore, the defending Pro class champion, and Mike Troiano both scored podiums. Travis Moore tallied 4-3 moto finishes for third place in the Pro class, allowing him to keep his points lead. Troiano returned to the NEATV-MX series after taking a personal break. He notched his first Pro-Am overall victory with a 2-1 scorecard.

Mike Troiano returned to NEATV-MX action this past weekend and posted a 2-1 moto scorecard to win the Pro-Am class at round eight in Maine.

“It’s super exciting to be able to get my first overall win and especially on the Can-Am, which I love racing. This year has been super hard on me. I just needed some personal time to take off from racing and recoup, and it showed here today,” said Troiano.

Valcourt, Québec, July 29, 2014 – Can-Am® DS 450™ racers recorded numerous podiums competing in both the AMA-sanctioned Mtn. Dew ATV Motocross National Championship series in Michigan and round six of the New England ATV Motocross series in Massachusetts. Joel Hetrick earned third place in the Pro class at the Red Bud MX National, while fellow Pro Travis Moore earned second in the NEATV-MX series Pro ranks.

“We had a decent weekend in both the ATV MX National series and the New England series, earning Pro and Pro-Am podiums,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “Joel Hetrick’s third-place finish at Red Bud gave him the nice points advantage in the race for second place, which will ultimately be decided at the series finale. DS 450 racers Jeffrey Rastrelli and Ronnie Higgerson will be battling for the Pro-Am class title at the finale as well, so our season is definitely ending with some intrigue.”

Red Bud ATV MX National

Three Can-Am DS 450 Pros finished in the top seven at the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC Red Bud ATV National in Buchanan, Mich. Joel Hetrick (JB Racing / DWT / Mtn. Dew Live Wire / Can-Am) was the top finisher, earning third overall with a 2-6 scorecard. The podium finish was Hetrick’s fifth of the season, pushing his points total to 306 and giving him an 11-point cushion over third place.

“The Can-Am was working awesome and my Elka shocks were great on the rough Red Bud track,” said Hetrick. “I want to go to Loretta’s and be strong there; hopefully take another win. I’m second in points now going into the last round and if all goes well, I will finish second in points, which would be the best Pro finish of my career. I’m pretty happy about that.”

<img class="size-full wp-image-5630" alt="Jeffrey Rastrelli is now the Pro-Am class points leader after finishing second overall in the class over the weekend at Red Bud. He also finished sixth in the Pro class at round eight.

Coming off his first career Pro class podium finish at round seven, JB Racing / Cheerwine / Can-Am DS 450 pilot Jeffrey Rastrelli overcame a first-moto crash to earn a very respectable sixth-place finish at Red Bud. He also earned second overall in the Pro-Am class with a 4-1 moto score on Sunday. More importantly, the podium finish pushed him into the class points lead over fellow DS 450 pilot Ronnie Higgerson, who finished seventh at Red Bud while racing in a cast. The championship will come down to the final round at Loretta Lynn’s in two weeks, as just four points separate Rastrelli and Higgerson.

“It wasn’t the best weekend for me, but being how rough the track was, we came out pretty good. I had an awesome start in the first Pro moto and then I hit a kicker and then went over a berm and flipped. I got back on quick and got up to sixth before the end,” said Rastrelli. “In Pro-Am I have the points lead now, so I want to ride smart and stay out front so I can bring home a championship.”

<img class="size-full wp-image-5631" alt="Mathieu Deroy (Can-Am X-Team member) won the Open A class aboard his DS 450 ATV at Red Bud.
BCS Performance / Can-Am racer Josh Creamer recorded a seventh-place finish in the Pro class at Red Bud and is currently sixth in the class standings. Canadian Can-Am X-Team racer Mathieu Deroy made the trip to Red Bud and put together an impressive 2-1 scorecard to win the Open A class. William Lloyd (JB Racing / Cheerwine / Can-Am) joined him on the class podium, taking third on his DS 450.

Capeway Rovers NEATV-MX

At a rocky, sandy and rough Capeway Rovers MX in Carver, Mass., BCS Performance / Whitcher Racing / Can-Am X-Team rider Travis Moore continued his pursuit of a repeat championship by taking second in the NEATV-MX Pro class. He took second in both motos to earn 50 points and remain on top of the class standings heading into round seven. Moore also competed in the Pro-Am class and finished fourth – overcoming crashes in each both motos – to maintain his points lead.

Travis Moore finished second in the Pro class and tallied a fourth-place finish in the Pro-Am class at round six of the NEATV-MX series to maintain his points lead in both classes.

“My Whitcher Racing Can-Am DS450 was handling awesome today and soaking up the gnarly track and rocks and we never had a mechanical issue even despite my crash,” said Moore. “My points leads have been maintained heading into the next round at Twister Valley, which is my biggest rival’s hometown track, but I’m confident in myself and my team and we will be training very hard this coming week.”

For Can-Am, the day started with JB Racing / DWT / Mtn. Dew Live Wire / Can-Am Pro Joel Hetrick earning the ATVriders.com Fastest Qualifier award aboard his DS 450 ATV. Jeffrey Rastrelli was in the spotlight all day, as the JB Racing / Cheerwine / Can-Am Pro pulled off two great starts to contend for a spot on the podium. Rastrelli ended up with his first Pro class podium finish, earning third overall at Unadilla. He started the podium chase by grabbing the second spot at the gate drop in the first moto. He later led a lap of that moto before dropping back one spot to take second. In moto two, Rastrelli started fourth and held that spot for much of the race. His 2-5 scorecard was good for third overall and helped him climb to seventh in the class point standings.

“My Can-Am was running awesome out there. I had good starts and it handled really well. I got on the podium in Pro, which I am really excited about, and I also got the win in Pro-Am on Sunday. I really couldn’t ask for a better weekend,” said Rastrelli.

BCS Performance / Can-Am DS 450 Pro Josh Creamer also had a good showing at Unadilla, earning fourth overall. He won the SSI Decals Holeshot Award in moto two on his way to a third-place finish. He matched up that finish with an earlier sixth-place run in moto one to tally his fourth, fourth-place finish of the year. Hetrick put together a 4-7 scorecard to end up sixth overall on the day in New York. He holds sole possession of second place in the standings heading into round eight. Ronnie Higgerson, the final Can-Am DS 450 Pro competing in the Pro ranks, finished seventh with a steady 8-8 moto score. Can-Am Pros currently own second, sixth (Creamer), seventh (Rastrelli) and eighth place (Higgerson) in the class standings.

“I had a decent start in the first moto, but somehow I ended up cutting a tire and that kind of set me back a bit in the first moto,” said Creamer. “Moto two went great. I grabbed the holeshot and led for several laps. My Can-Am was running great. BCS has done a great job. The quad has so much power and the FOX shocks handled great out there.”

Can-Am racers continue their pursuit toward the Pro-Am class championship. Rastrelli notched his second victory of the year with an impressive 1-1 finish to climb to within 7 points of Higgerson, the current Pro-Am class points leader. Higgerson, who saw his string of five straight podium finishes end, finished 15th, but is in the driver’s seat with just two rounds remaining. William Lloyd (JB Racing / Cheerwine / Can-Am), who was seventh in the Pro-Am class, recorded his second Open A class win of the year to move into the top three in the point standings.
