Five Easy Things You Can Do Now to Help Prevent Breast Cancer

Rather than focusing on breast cancer, Wise Women choose to concentrate on keeping our breasts healthy through wise lifestyle and dietary choices.

The following tips may amaze you, since the actions and foods they suggest run counter to many alternative views of cancer prevention. They are supported with strong research, however - from the lab, with animals, and in long-term human studies. Thus, each of these tips has a solid scientific basis, unlike the assertions made by those intent on selling you their opinions and products.

Embarking on even one of these suggestions will definitely lower your risk of breast cancer. Using them all is even better.

1. Be more active

Evidence continues to accumulate that a vigorous lifestyle is one of the best ways to cut breast cancer risk. A study of 20,624 Norwegian women found those who exercised or worked out regularly cut their breast cancer risk by 72%. (NEJM, 5/1/1997)

For breast health I walk every day, take a weekly yoga class, and do tai chi twice a week.

2. Eat more unrefined seed foods

All seeds provide phytoestrogens. Women who eat the most phytoestrogenic foods are four times less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than those who eat the least. "No study has shown a degree of risk reduction similar to that found for phytoestrogens..." (Lancet, 10/4/1997)

Whole grains such as wheat, rice, corn, kasha, millet, and quinoa are unrefined seed foods. Beans such as lentils, black beans, pinto beans, lima beans, and chickpeas are unrefined seed foods. Nuts including peanuts, walnuts, almonds, and pecans are unrefined seed foods. And edible seeds such as sesame, sunflower, and pumpkin are unrefined seed foods. Fruits and vegetables that are eaten with their seeds - such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, kiwi fruit, summer squash, tomatoes, and cucumbers - count as unrefined seed foods. Even seeds used as seasonings count, such as cumin, coriander, caraway, anise, and dill seeds.

For breast health, I have replaced all refined carbohydrates - including white rice and white/unbleached flour products such as pasta, bread, cookies, crackers, pretzels, bagels, donuts, and cakes - with whole grain products.

3. Eat less vegetable oil; increase animal fat, especially from dairy products

"Diets high in corn oil leave animals especially vulnerable to chemically induced cancers" say researchers. (Science News, 6/24/89; 10/2/99) Frightening as this statement is, it is not true only of corn oil but of all vegetable (or seed) oils including those made from soy, sesame, sunflower, cottonseed, flax, and hemp.

If you are dubious about eating more animal fat and dairy products to reduce breast cancer risk, consider this landmark study reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine (1/12/1998). To determine if food affected breast cancer risk. The diets of 61,000 Swedish women between the ages of 40-76 were followed for four years. The results? For every 5 grams (about a teaspoonful) of vegetable oil consumed per day, breast cancer risk increased by 70%. In contrast, for each 10 grams of fat from meat and dairy products in the daily diet, breast cancer risk was decreased by 55%.

Another study, begun in the early 1970s, followed 4,000 Finnish women's diets for 25 years. Results recently released found that those who "drank the most milk had only half the breast cancer risk of those who drank the least."

American researchers agree. According to a report in International Journal of Cancer (2001), women who drank milk as children and continued drinking it as adults had half the rate of breast cancer of non-milk drinkers. (Yes, I do buy organic milk, but the studies used regular supermarket milk.)

Why? Galactose, the primary sugar in milk, slows ovarian production of estradiol, a cancer-promoting hormone. Additionally, milk is rich in CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), a fat known to suppress breast tumors in animals.

For breast health I use yogurt, cheese, milk, butter, and olive oil daily, and eat meat occasionally.

Remember that olive oil is pressed from a fruit, not a seed. Women whose diets are high in olive oil, and who eat meat and dairy products regularly, have the lowest rates of breast cancer in the world. (Journal of the National Cancer Institute, 1/18/1995)

4. Eat less tofu and soy beverage; eat more miso and tamari

While it is true that if you begin eating soy foods as a child and continue throughout puberty the breast tissues you create during your adolescence will be highly resistant to cancer until after menopause. However, if you begin eating unfermented soy (tofu, soy milk, and the like) after puberty, your risk of breast cancer increases. (Science News, 4/24/1999)

The active ingredient in soy - isoflavone - when given to breast cancer cells in petri dishes causes them to grow rapidly. (Extracts of dong quai and licorice have a similar effect.)

Miso and tamari - fermented soy foods - are the exceptions. Both are strongly cancer preventative, no matter when you start eating them. Animal studies have found both miso and tamari highly effective in preventing cancer, even in mice genetically programmed to get breast cancer. And the more you eat, the more you lower your risk of cancer.

For breast health, I use miso and/or tamari every day. I occasionally eat tofu or edemame. I drink no soy milk, and eat no other soy products of any kind.

5. Eat foods rich in antioxidants; avoid supplements of vitamins C and E

A diet that contains plenty of foods rich in antioxidants definitely lowers breast cancer risk. But supplements seem to do the opposite.

Doctors in Stockholm observed that, among breast cancer patients, treatment failures were higher for women taking vitamin E supplements - and the failure rate increased with dose. Studying this effect, researchers found that the anti-cancer benefits of fish oils "disappeared when [we] gave... antioxidant vitamins". In fact, when mice with breast cancer were given vitamin E supplements "the more we gave them, the bigger their tumors grew." The authors conclude that vitamin E supplements "preferentially protect a cancer and even aid its spread." (Science News, 4/29/1995 and 7/15/1995)

Supplements of vitamin C (synthetic ascorbic acid) are poorly used by body tissues. But cancer cells seem to thrive on it. (Cancer Research, 9/15/1999) One new "chemotherapy" links a lethal form of zinc to an ascorbic acid molecule; when the cancer eats the ascorbic acid, the zinc is set free to kill the cancer cell.

For breast health I eat 5-7 servings of dark green and bright red/orange foods daily.

Besides being active, choosing a diet high in phytoestrogens, eating one or more servings of dairy products daily, using miso and tamari regularly, and avoiding vitamin supplements, here are three more things you can do to help prevent breast cancer:

6. Sleep in the dark

Exposure to light at night increases the risk of breast cancer. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute (8/17/2001) reports that chronic suppression of melatonin - an anti-cancer hormone made only in the dark - increases breast cancer risk by at least 36%.

For breast health, be certain there is no light (except from the moon) in the room where you sleep. Not even a night-light. Not the light from a clock. Not the little lights on electronics.

7. Drink red clover blossom infusion

Red clover is a potent anti-cancer herb. It contains ten times more phytoestrogens than soy, and in a more complete form. I have seen it clear in situ cancers and pre-cancerous polyps hundreds of times. Since many breast cancers take 7-10 years to become big enough to be seen on a mammogram, I drink a quart of red clover infusion every week and skip the mammogram.

To prepare the infusion:

Place one ounce, by weight (about a cup by volume), of dried red clover in a quart canning jar.
Fill the jar to the top with boiling water and lid tightly.
Let steep for four hours or overnight.
Strain and drink.
Refrigerate excess and drink within 24-36 hours.

For breast health, I drink red clover infusion regularly.

8. Eat seaweed as a vegetable

If the long-lived and cancer-free Japanese have a secret, it is seaweed, not soy. A sprinkling of kelp as a seasoning is nice, and so are nori rolls - but neither does much to prevent cancer. For that we must eat seaweed as a vegetable - at least a half-cup serving per week. Wakame, kombu, kelp, and alaria are especially effective, but sea palm fronds, hijiki, nori, and dulse may be used on occasion.

There is a rich variety of seaweeds available in Chinese grocery stores, health food stores, and by mail.

It is not uncommon to find people searching for natural remedies for cancer and natural cancer cure, but how effective are such natural treatments when it comes to a life threatening disease like cancer. Can you really take the course of natural cancer cures without opting for chemotherapy? The popular belief is that complete cancer cure is only possible with radiation therapy or chemotherapy since this kills cancer cells, but you can prevent cancer from recurring by using natural remedies for cancer. Recent research has shown that graviola, also known as paw-paw or custard apple, may be helpful in natural cancer treatment although no significant medical research exists around this.

According to Cancer Tutor, the use of graviola with alternative natural cancer cure, Protocel, can increase the effectiveness of Protocel but it is a risky treatment that is not recommended at all for brain cancer patients. Graviola attacks cancer cells by cutting off their energy supply. The problem is that graviola extracts are easily available over the counter and most cancer patients are taking self prescribed medicines. It is extremely important to consult a doctor and take medication as recommended by them. A lot of oncologists are gravitating towards combining cancer therapy with natural remedies for cancer to prevent cancer from resurfacing. However, for stage III and stage IV patients, chemotherapy is the only option for increasing their life span.

Apart from inflicting symptoms similar to Alzheimer's, graviola can also result in the destruction of digestive and intestinal lining, especially in people who do not have any parasitic ailments. Most manufacturers provide a list of symptoms that may occur post graviola intake but caution must be advised. It is important not to trust sources on the internet blindly, unless supported by a recognized cancer research institute.

Knowing the stage of your breast cancer helps your medical team determine how big the cancer is and if it has spread. This helps them guide your therapy and provide reliable prognostic information.

In general, staging is done following your surgery, either after lumpectomy or mastectomy. It usually includes evaluation of the lymph nodes in your armpit (axillary lymph nodes), and possibly other radiology tests and blood work.

All breast cancers are staged using a system defined by the American Joint Committee on Cancer. The system was most recently modified in 2002, and its classifications are based on what's called a "TNM system." TNM refers to tumor size (T), number of lymph nodes involved (N), and whether your cancer has metastasized (or spread) to other parts of your body (M).
The following is an overview of the TNM system*.
T: The size of the cancer.
T0: No cancer is present.
Tis: Non-invasive cancer, also known as carcinoma in situ, is present.
T1: Invasive cancer measuring 2 centimeters or smaller is present. This is further sub-divided into four groups:
Tmic: microinvasive cancer, meaning the invasive cancer is 1 millimeter or smaller.
T1a: the invasive cancer measures greater than 1 millimeter but not greater than 5 millimeters.
T1b: the invasive cancer measures greater than 5 millimeters but not greater than 1 centimeter.
T1c: the invasive cancer measures greater than 1 centimeter but not greater than 2 centimeters.
T2: Invasive cancer is present, measuring greater than 2 centimeters but not greater than 5 centimeters.
T3: Invasive cancer is present, measuring greater than 5 centimeters.
T4: Invasive cancer is invading the chest wall or skin; also includes inflammatory cancer.
N: The number of lymph nodes involved by cancer.
N0: No cancer found in nodes. In 2002, an addition was made for the diagnosis of isolated tumor cells (ITCs):
N0i+: Cells found in the node measuring 0.2 millimeters or less, found either on routine pathology or using immunohistochemistry.
N1: Cancer is present in 1-3 nodes in the armpit area (also known as axillary lymph nodes).
N1mic: The cancer present in the node measures greater than 0.2 millimeters but not greater than 2 millimeters. This is also known as a micrometastasis.
N2: Cancer is present in 4-9 axillary nodes.
N3: Cancer is present in 10 or more axillary nodes.
M: The presence or absence of distant metastases.
M0: No distant metastases are present.
M1: Distant metastases are present.
Once you know your T, N, and M status, you can determine your breast cancer stage as follows:
Stage 0: Tis, N0, M0
Stage I: T1, N0, M0.
Stage IIA: T0/T1 with N1, M0 or T2, N0, M0
Stage IIB: T2, N1, M0 or T3, N0, M0
Stage IIIA: T0/T1/T2 with N2, M0 or T3 with N1 or N2 and M0
Stage IIIB: T4 with N0/N1/N2, M0
Stage IIIC: Any T with N3, M0
Stage IV: Any T, any N with M1

A breast cancer diagnosis puts fear into the heart of any woman, no matter her circumstances in life. After all, this disease is nothing to be trifled with. Fortunately, the survival rate for breast cancer is one of the best amongst all types, thanks to advances in science and technology in terms of early detection, correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Indeed, early detection is the key to surviving breast cancer in addition to applying the right nutritional and holistic treatments.

In fact, many of the treatment options involved thankfully don't involve the radical, traumatic and ugly side effects that radiation therapy brings to the patient. Thus, hair loss, extreme nausea and vomiting and very haggard appearance can be significantly avoided.

The most alarming statistics around breast cancer are coming out. "Every 13 minutes another woman dies from the environmental, dietary and metabolic acids that cause breast cancer, an acidic condition of the breast tissue that has more than tripled in incidence over the past 50 years," states Dr. Robert O. Young, Director of the pH Miracle Living Center, in San Diego County, California.

Chlorine is a recognized pesticide. It has been added to our drinking water supplies, as a disinfectant, since the late 1800's. When chlorine combines with organic compounds in the water (sediment) or our bodies, organochlorines are formed. According to Wikipedia, organochlorines include chloroform, dichloromethane, dichloroethene, and trichlorotheane. Other organochlorines include haloacetic acids and trihalmethanes.
Scientific studies have linked the accumulation of chlorine compounds in breast tissue to cancer. The steam that is inhaled while showering or swimming can contain up to 50 times more chlorine that by drinking tap water. The chlorine gas, given off by hot water in the shower or hot tub is extremely toxic and it is breathed in, where it goes directly into the blood stream. From there, who knows where it will end up and accumulate. More and more evidence is suggesting that it is ending up in breast tissue.

An article published by Greenpeace in 1993 outlines the health risks associated with chlorine. The article is called, "Chlorine, Human Health, and the Environment: The Breast Cancer Warning." You can look it up on the internet quite easily.
With such compelling evidence, it is important that every woman examine the facts and make intelligent choices for her health. I, for one, see no use for chlorine, once the water comes out of my tap, so I have a machine attached to my faucet that eliminates, chlorine and its by-products and other contaminants, in addition to adding ionic minerals making the water alkaline, added more dissolved oxygen and negative ions and make the water bundles into smaller clusters. I get alkaline, super-oxygenated, antioxidant, microclustered water that promotes more vital energy, more efficient hydration, efficient detoxification and vibrant health.

I see no reason to become any of the one in seven women that have the probability of developing cancerous acidic breasts over their lifetime. Breast cancer is one of the most important health issues facing women today. It is the second leading cause of acidic cancer deaths in women and is the most common acid cancer among women. According to the World Health Organization, more than 1.2 million women will be diagnosed with cancerous breasts this year, worldwide. Prostrate Cancer: Advanced Prostate Cancer Treatment

There are several treatment options for men with advanced prostate cancer. The choice of treatment depends on how far advanced the cancer is, the patient's age and his personal preferences. Prostate cancer is considered to be advanced when it has spread (metastasized) beyond the prostate gland to other areas of the body. There is no cure for advanced prostate cancer, but treatments can help slow its growth, minimize spreading and ease symptoms.

Hormone Therapy
Hormone therapy is the most commonly used treatment for advanced prostate cancer. In order to grow, prostate cancer cells must have a supply of male hormones, such as testosterone. Hormone therapy reduces the body's production of testosterone which in turn causes a slow down in cancer cell growth. There are two ways to decrease the body's production of testosterone: surgical removal of the testicles which produce it and drugs that control or block its action. Most men choose drug therapy over surgery.

Estrogen Therapy
Another form of hormone therapy involves use of the female hormone estrogen, or one similar to it. Female hormones cause the testicles to produce less testosterone. Estrogen therapy was once considered the standard treatment for prostate cancer but it is not widely used today. It is typically reserved for patients who cannot undergo surgery or to help manage pain.

Combined Hormonal Approach
Many men choose a combination of treatments to manage advanced prostate cancer. This combined hormonal approach uses radiation therapy in conjunction with hormone therapy. Using this combination of treatments may help ease symptoms and slow the growth of the cancer.

Chemotherapy
Although hormone therapy slows the growth of prostate cancer for a period of time, eventually the cancer starts to grow again---usually after one to two years. When this happens, the disease is called hormone-resistant prostate cancer. Chemotherapy is one treatment option for this stage of the cancer. Chemotherapy uses powerful drugs that travel throughout the body to fight and kill cancer cells. Some chemotherapy drugs are taken by mouth while others are injected directly into a vein. Chemotherapy is generally reserved for advanced prostate cancer that no longer responds to hormonal therapy or that has spread beyond the prostate gland.

Potential
Much research is being done to develop improved treatments for prostate cancer. One of the latest treatments being tested is the use of vaccines to boost the body's immune response to prostate cancer cells. Several of these vaccines are currently being tested in clinical trials. These vaccines, unlike those for infections like mumps and measles, are intended to treat, not prevent, prostate cancer. Vaccines for prostate cancer are only available in clinical trials.

Monoclonal antibodies are also being studied for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. These antibodies are manmade to target specific molecules in prostate cancer cells. They are being tested in clinical trials to treat and prevent advanced prostate cancer that has metastasized to the bones.

It is estimated that breast cancer will cause 40,170 deaths in 2009 in the United States alone. Because of these high rates, women often use various allopathic and alternative therapies both to prevent and help cure breast cancer. One of the alternative methods is clay healing. Clay has been long been used to mitigate and cure disease, as it removes toxins from the skin. Calcium bentonite clay---or volcanic ash---is particularly useful because it can be both ingested and applied externally. It contains negatively charged ions, and neutralizes the positively charged ions of toxins, bacteria, radiation and other harmful chemicals. Calcium bentonite clay is almost always sold in powder form.

Ask for your doctor's advice if you are planning to drink or ingest clay, and check with your dermatologist before getting a facial or body mask or a clay bath. Also, if you have breast cancer, ask your oncologist if he recommends clay therapy for you.

Step 1
First, apply a facial mixture. Using a glass, wooden or clay bowl, mix equal parts of the bentonite clay and distilled or plain water until the mixture turns into a smooth paste. Let it stand for a few minutes and apply a thick layer to your face, then wait five to 20 minutes until the mask dries. Wash the clay off your face with warm water.

Avoid putting the clay on sensitive areas of your head and face, including the eyes, mouth, nostrils and inner ears.

Step 2
Apply a full body mask, dabbing the clay about 1 inch thick all over your body, with the exception of the genital area, as well as any areas with open wounds. After the clay dries, scrub the clay from your body in the shower or bathtub.

Step 3
Take clay baths once or twice each week. To prepare your clay bath, scatter at least 2 cups of bentonite clay powder evenly into running water, filling the bathtub. Soak in the tub for 15 to 20 minutes in very hot water. Make sure all parts of your body---except your face and the sensitive areas discussed above---are exposed to the bath water.

The more clay you use, the more potent it is. After taking a total of five to six baths within five to 10 weeks, take a clay bath only twice a year.

Step 4
Drink a bentonite clay solution. Take it on an empty stomach at least one hour before or after your meal or right before you sleep at night. Start with a daily dose of 1 tbsp. of the powder mixed with 8 tbsp. of juice. If there are noticeable positive results, such as an increase in vitality, gradually increase the dosage up to a maximum of 4 tbsp. of clay daily, sipped in separate doses.

Step 5
Eat bentonite clay mixed with water. Clay that is optimal for ingesting should appear very smooth and creamy and is tasteless. The recommended dosage is 1 to 2 tbsp. daily, taken before a meal. Wait one to three hours before eating clay if you have just taken medication or vitamins.

Prostatic Cancer in Dogs

Canine prostatic cancer commonly occurs in older male dogs, usually without an obvious cause. Castration has no effect on your dog's chances for developing the disease. Unfortunately, this cancer, once developed, tends to spread to other parts of the body and does not typically present with symptoms until it is well advanced. Although prognosis is poor, certain treatments can make your dog more comfortable.

Symptoms
Canine prostate cancer symptoms include dysuria (an inability to urinate) from an obstruction in the urinary tract, pain and blood upon urination, incontinence, straining or inability to defecate and weight loss.

Diagnosis
Unfortunately, symptoms do not appear and diagnosis does not usually take place until the disease has advanced too far to cure. Following a veterinary examination, the dog typically undergoes a biopsy, X-rays and ultrasound to confirm the doctor's suspicions.

Conventional Treatments
Unless prostate cancer symptoms are present, treatment of a benign prostate tumor is typically unnecessary. If symptoms are present (in the case of a benign tumor), castration of your dog should halt prostate enlargement. The drug Megace may be prescribed to shrink the prostate if castration is rejected as a option. Surgery, radiation and chemotherapy comprise the accepted treatment regimen for cancerous prostate growths; chemotherapy is used even though this type of cancer does not respond well to the treatment. Radiation has been proven to slow the progression of the disease.

Herbal Treatments
Saw palmetto contains natural anti-inflammatory agents that have proven effective against an enlarged prostate gland. Cleavers expels toxins and is used in situations involving glandular inflammation and swelling and urinary tract problems. Echinacea has been proven to boost the immune system and reduce prostate inflammation. A veterinary herbalist will be able to prescribe the correct dose.

Cures for Cervical Cancer

The cells of the cervix sometimes undergo genetic mutation, often as a result of HPV infection. When this happens, the cells can begin to grow uncontrollably, leading to cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is usually screened for with a pap smear, and any abnormalities can be examined more closely via a biopsy. As with any cancer, catching it early is key to curing it.

Hysterectomy
If the cancer is detected in the early stages (when it is still only in the cervix), then a hysterectomy will usually be able to cure the cancer. A hysterectomy involves taking out the whole uterus as well as some of the vagina.

Less invasive surgeries
For women who still wish to be fertile, a cone biopsy or loop electrical excision procedure may be effective. These procedures attempt to identify the exact area of the cancer and only take out the affected tissue.

Trachelectomy
Sometimes a cone biopsy is not able to remove all of the cancerous tissue. In these cases, the cancer can still be cured surgically via a trachelectomy, which cuts out more of the tissue but still attempts to avoid damaging the ovaries and uterus.

Tumors not confined to the cervix
In the event that the tumor has spread beyond the cervix, a hysterectomy is called for, as well as lymph node removal. Radiation therapy will also be used to try and remove and cancerous tissue not removed by the surgery.

More advanced tumors
More advanced tumors are harder to cure and will require a hysterectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. While these tumors are difficult to totally "cure," there is a good chance of being able to put them into remission.

Saw palmetto extract is known to shrink swollen prostate tissue in humans and pets and has been used as such in Europe for some time. Graviola has been one of those herbs that is storming the marketplace these days. The tree itself is a small evergreen that naturally grows in the tropical rain forests in South America. This process is a lot harder than one would think and it isn't going to be for everyone, but if you don't want to buy the graviola but would rather try and grow it, here's how you'd do it.

Check your local weather conditions. You will not only want to check the weather for the day that you are planning on planting your tree, but also the weeks ahead. You will be better off planting the tree when it doesn't have to fight harsh weather conditions. This includes heat and cold. Anything below 40-degree Fahrenheit can ruin your Graviola tree. Also, the tree grows in a tropical environment, so if you don't have weather that can equal that, your quest to have your own Graviola tree may be over before it starts.
Call your utilities companies and make sure that the spot that you are selecting won't interfere with any wires or pipes underground. This is a huge step because you can cause a lot of damage to a pipe or wire with a shovel and it can cost you a whole lot of money, time and a big headache to take care of it.
Dig a hole where you want the tree to be. Make the hole 2-3 times larger in diameter than the roots of the tree are, and just as deep. Making the hole this wide will allow the roots to have an easier time starting to grow since the dirt won't be as packed down at first. Put the shoveled dirt on the tarp. This will make cleanup a lot easier.
Set the tree in the center of the hole and fill with one-third of the dirt and stamp it down with your foot.
Water the tree. Do not over-water it, but make sure that the ground is moist after a few moments. Fill in the rest of the dirt and water again.
Use the remaining dirt to make a ridge around the tree about 2-3 inches high. This will help the tree hold more water. You may also put a layer of mulch over the top to assist with this.

Graviola leaves are large, shiny, dark green leaves that grow on the evergreen Graviola tree, which can be found in the rainforests of North and South America. While scientifically classified as annona muricata, graviola is also known by localized names such as guanabana, Brazilian paw paw and soursop. All of the parts of the graviola tree have been traditionally used for medicinal purposes, including its bark,
roots, seeds, oil, fruit and leaves. Today, capsules and tinctures made with graviola leaf are often prescribed to help cure depression and cancer.

How it Works

According to Nutrovita.com, research has shown that graviola contain chemicals called annonaceous acetogenins. These chemicals have been proven to have strong anti-parasitic, antimicrobial, insecticidal, and anti-tumurous properties. Annonaceous acetogenins are inhibitors of an enzyme found in cancerous cell tissue, and also block the transportation of ATP, which can help destroy multi-drug-resistance cancers.
