Summer can offer a much needed time for academic and research librarians to reflect on the just completed academic year, work on the projects left lingering on the to-do list, and plan programming for upcoming semesters. The upcoming ALA Banned Books Week, held September 26–October 3, provides an opportunity to educate the campus community about censorship and freedom of expression issues. Melissa Hubbard outlines Southern Illinois University-Carbondale’s programming in her article “Banned Books Week and the Freedom of the Press.”

Summer break also offers a time to prepare orientation sessions for new students and faculty. “The huge hubbub” by Alice Wasielewski provides tips for planning fun and informative freshman orientations. In addition to students and faculty, libraries themselves can benefit from orientation-style programs. Uta Hussong-Christian, Sue Kunda, and Hannah Gascho Rempel describe the Oregon State University Libraries In-Service Day in “By the people, for the people.” In our continuing look at the impact of the current economic climate on academic and research libraries, Kate Joranson and Eve Wider examine ways librarians can assist students preparing for an uncertain job market in “Librarians on the case.”

Make sure to take a look at all of the other great articles and columns in this month’s issue. Thanks for reading the News!

More than 4,300 library staff, exhibitors, speakers, and guests assembled in Seattle, March 12-15 for ACRL’s 14th National Conference. “Pushing The Edge: Explore, Engage, Extend” featured a variety of invited and contributed papers, panels, poster sessions, workshops, Cyber Zed Shed talks, and discussion groups. Another 350 participants met online for the ACRL 2009 Virtual Conference. This issue includes an overview of ACRL 2009.

Instruction librarians are constantly searching for ways to engage students in the research process. Many institutions have initiated library research contests and prizes to reward student work. Lynn Jones describes the University of California-Berkeley’s library prize program in her article “The rewards of research.” In past months, C&RL News has highlighted ways in which the current economic climate impacts academic and research libraries and librarians in the areas of customer service and the job search process. This month, we look at the impact of the economy on management and leadership as Mary Carmen Chimato describes “How an economic crisis may improve your management skills.”

The popular Job of a Lifetime feature returns this month with a new editor, Erin Dorney. Erin’s first column highlights the work of user experience librarian Brian Mathews. Make sure to check out all of the other great features and columns in this month’s issue, including a look at using CONTENTdm to create a diversity news index, information on the SCOAP3 project, and Internet Resources on translation sites.

Providing instructional services is one of the core functions of today’s college and research librarian. In order to fulfill this role, it is important to keep current on developments in teaching and learning, both in the library and across the academy. In this issue, Sean Cordes and Brian Clark examine evolving innovations in library instruction in “Business process management and the ‘new’ library instruction.” New trends in higher education also impact the way librarians approach teaching. Cara Bradley examines one such movement in her article “The scholarship of teaching and learning.”

The growing open movement provides opportunities for innovation and collaboration in instruction. Oregon State University developed “Library à la Carte,” an open source tool for creating course pages and research guides. Jane Nichols provides details on the evolution and development of the project this month. In the latest scholarly communication column, C. Jeffrey Belliston investigates “Open Educational Resources,” and outlines opportunities for librarians to become active in this growing movement.

Make sure to take a look at all of the other great articles and columns in this month’s issue, including a look at how libraries can take cues from the success of the online retailer Zappos in the current economy, Internet Resources on Tudor England, revised “Guidelines for Curriculum Resource Centers,” and part two of the 2009 ACRL awards.

College & Research Libraries News is looking for images from library collections to feature on upcoming covers. If you have items in your collections that you think would make attractive C&RL News covers, we would love to see them. To submit images (or image collections), send URLs for Web-based images or images directly as attachments to David Free at dfree@ala.org. Please include a brief description of the item and your collection. Images selected to appear as C&RL News covers will require a high-resolution electronic image (300 dpi or higher) to be submitted prior to the publication date.

Images must be vertically oriented or it must be possible to crop the image to show a detail in vertical format. Items that originate as a standard size (8 X 10, 5 X 7, etc.) will reproduce better as it will be easier to enlarge or shrink them to fit the cover, as opposed to items of equal width and height (for example, a 5 x 5 image). Color images are preferred, but not required.

Works selected must be in the public domain or from institutions that own reproduction rights for the works.

Complete guidelines for the submission of cover illustration are available on the C&RL News Website. .

Budget reductions lead to increasing competition for funding. Frozen positions lead to increased competition in the job market. Karin Durán, Eric Garcia, and Mara Houdyshell provide tips on successfully navigating the academic library interview process for both job seekers and employers in “From the inside out and outside in.” In a related essay, Ramirose Ilene Attebury takes a look at “The personal question,” adding to the debate over the impact of personal online presence in the job search process.

Maintaining a rich resume of participation in the profession is one way for job seekers to stand out from the crowd. Contributing to the literature of academic and research librarianship can add an edge in the employment, as well as promotion and tenure, processes. In this month’s Internet Resources feature. Laurie Putnam provides an excellent list of resources for getting started in “Professional writing and publishing.” Legislative activity, such as the economic stimulus plan, also has a potential impact on academic and research libraries. Jenni Terry of the ALA Washington Office outlines the potential benefits of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and makes suggestions for action in her Washington Hotline column.

Make sure to take a look at all of the other great articles and columns, including a successful art gallery in a science library, tips for using Delicious for bibliographic access, lessons a regional library network learned about collaboration, impending copyright legislation, and the first in a two-part series recognizing the 2009 ACRL award winners. Thanks for reading the News!

It is hard to believe that the ACRL 14th National Conference is almost here. Held March 12–15 in Seattle, the conference offers a wide variety of sessions to help you keep up with the latest in issues, such as advocacy, assessment, collections, and digital initiatives. The virtual conference community provides an opportunity to learn virtually through podcasts, live Webcasts of conference sessions, and dynamic screen captures of every contributed paper and panel session. Visit the conference Web site for complete details.

Assessment is sure to be a big topic of discussion in Seattle. In this issue, Peter Hernon and Robert E. Dugan discuss “Assessment and evaluation” and provide useful working definitions of the terms as they relate to measuring student outcomes. Campus engagement is a necessary step along the road to assessment and evaluation. David Salinero and Cynthia Beardsley discuss the concept as it relates to both students and faculty in their article “Enhancing the academic experience.” Assessing workplace issues such as commitment to diversity can provide insights into building healthy library organizations that can better engage their campus communities. Martha Kyrillidou and M. Sue Baughman highlight the “ClimateQUAL” diversity assessment tool in this issue.

This issue also includes responses from the candidates for ALA president to a set of questions from the ACRL Board of Directors. A list of ACRL members running for ALA Council is also provided. We hope these resources will help you make an informed decision as you vote in the ALA election starting March 17. As always, make sure to take a look at all of the other articles and columns in this month’s issue. Thanks for reading the News!

The ACRL 14th National Conference is fast approaching. In this issue, Kristen Shuyler and Dalia Corkrum provide a tasty overview of the Seattle culinary scene. They offer a wide range of dining tips to help you plan your conference experience. Juliet Kerico and Karen Munro also outline “Six steps to greening your ACRL National Conference experience.” Make sure to visit the ACRL 2009 Web site for complete conference details. With the rapid rise in mobile technologies, texting has become a communication norm, especially among today’s college students. Laura Kohl and Maura Keating describe their experiences providing SMS reference service at Bryant University in “A phone of one’s own.”

Working with new technologies often requires a close partnership between librarians and their information technology counterparts. Andrea Coles, a librarian, and William Dougherty, an IT professional, discuss ways to increase collaboration as these departments must “Hang together or hang separately.” Denise Shorey continues the collaboration theme by exploring an important working relationship, between supervisor and supervisee, in her essay “It takes two.”

Space, the final frontier. While academic librarians may not be exploring strange new worlds, discovering the best uses of physical and virtual space is crucial to providing excellent services. In this issue, Harry Glazer reflects on whether Rutgers University’s adventures in the virtual space of Facebook are a “Clever outreach or costly diversion?”

Adapting physical spaces to reflect user needs and behavior can bring the sense of community found in online spaces like Facebook back into the library. In her article “Dissecting the disconnect,” Amanda Wakaruk examines library planning through the lens of design and spatial theory. Many libraries involve students in the planning process in order to match spaces to their real world uses. Michelle Twait took student input out of the world of focus groups and surveys and into the classroom. Read about her library design course in “If they build it, they will come.”

Make sure to take a look at all of the other great articles and columns this month, including an excellent Internet Resources article on the history of photography by Ellen Bahr, the latest installment of Job of a Lifetime, and the index to volume 69 (2008).

The current era of electronic publishing impacts academic and research libraries in a myriad of ways. Scholarly research has moved from searching multiple volumes of paper indexes and dusty bound periodicals to aggregated online databases and full-text article access. Keeping faculty and students up to date on journal literature has also moved from print title lists and reading rooms to the online world. Derik A. Badman and Lianne Hartman describe how Temple University and Gwynedd-Mercy College are using new technologies, such as RSS and Yahoo! Pipes, as tools in “Developing current awareness services.”

Negotiating licensing agreements to provide access to electronic resources can be a daunting task. In this month’s Scholarly Communication column, “Breaking the bottleneck,” Clinton K. Chamberlain provides an overview of SERU, a new initiative to streamline the licensing process for both librarians and publishers. Of course the old ways of researching can still have value as an instructional tool, as Mary Murray and John Mumford describe in their article “Periodical indexes on the edge of time.”

Make sure to take a look at all of the other great articles and columns, including ideas for “greening” your library, Internet Resources on “African American cultural collections and museums,” and ways to extend your natural and cultural experience during your visit to the ACRL 14th National Conference in Seattle. Thanks for reading the News!

While today’s events call attention to the principle of freely available online research, there are many other important issues and trends related to ease of access to information. The Creative Commons movement provides free tools that allow content creators to easily share and provide access to their works. Molly Kleinman discusses Creative Commons and its implications for libraries in her article “The beauty of ‘Some Rights Reserved.’”

The advent of new technologies and methods of information delivery can provide challenges in the preservation of information for access by future generations. Paul Conway explores ways to reimagine the shifting work of preservation “Tec(h)tonics” in this issue. New standards and guidelines for special collections, produced by the ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Section, are also presented this month. Many educators and librarians are exploring the virtual world of Second Life (SL) as a means of information delivery. Troy Swanson outlines the use of a SL as a learning tool at Moraine Valley Community College in “Google Maps and Second Life,” and Beth Kattelman provides an informative list of SL-related Web sites in this month’s Internet Resources feature.

Make sure to take a look at all of the other great articles and columns, including Kathy Campbell’s discussion of what happens “When a librarian enters the classroom” and the third entry in our series of articles highlighting Seattle, host of the 14th ACRL National Conference.

Last month’s issue included a look at librarians “Taking 2.0 to the faculty.” This month, we feature a technology collaboration between a librarian and a classroom instructor, as Marsha Spiegelman and Richard Glass of Nassau Community College use Web 2.0 tools to advance “Gaming and learning.” Of course gaming doesn’t necessarily have to be 2.0. A good, old-fashioned quiz can be just as effective for learning and outreach as Kristine Fowler notes in her article “Jeopardy in the library.”

In November, voters will head to the polls to select our next President. Election season provides an excellent opportunity for libraries to showcase our resources, services, and talents. Amalia Monroe discusses how she used a custom search engine to enhance an election guide at the University of Kansas in “Organizing the 2008 Presidential election.” Looking to inject a little humor into your campaign season? This month’s Internet Resources column by Paul Cammarata features an interesting range of resources related to “Editorial cartoons on the Web.” Do you like good music? This month’s article looking ahead to the 14th ACRL National Conference provides an overview of the vibrant Seattle music scene, including recommendations for places to take in an act or two during the conference.

Make sure to take a look at all of the other great articles and columns, including an irreverent look at the promotion and tenure process, new “Standards for distance learning library services,” the latest edition of Job of a Lifetime, upcoming chapter conferences and events, and ways to get involved in ACRL. Enjoy!

By September, the fall term is usually in full swing at most academic libraries. The new school year presents opportunities for new outreach and collaboration with a variety of campus partners. Looking outside the walls and Web sites of our libraries is a great way to grow professionally while promoting libraries services. In this issue, Caitlin Tillman describes the “Library orientation for professors” program at the University of Ottawa. Her article gives sound tips for new faculty orientation that can be expanded to stress the range of library services in a variety of contexts.

Our interactions with faculty aren’t limited to a quality orientation session or a well-rehearsed “elevator speech.” Librarians can also serve as catalysts for new technologies and instructional models, as Sarah Faye Cohen discusses in her article “Taking 2.0 to faculty.” Of course, in many instances, librarians are considered part of the faculty and participate in institutional governance. Laurence S. Crieder took on such a role during his “Two years with a tee-ball bat” as chair of the faculty senate at New Mexico State University.

In honor of the upcoming October celebration of Gay and Lesbian History Month, this month’s Internet Resources column focuses on “Queering the Web.” Tami Albin and Jennifer Church-Duran’s collection of resources provide an excellent starting point for researching GLBTQ history and culture. This issue also contains the first in a series of articles looking ahead to next year’s ACRL14th National Conference in Seattle and a look back at ACRL activities at the recent ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim. Make sure to take a look at all of the other great articles and columns, including an excellent overview of open access initiatives in Canada.

*Notes: Due to the continuing redesign and updating of the ALA Web site, this month’s C&RL News is available in PDF format only. We will make the issue available in the regular full text HTML format as soon as possible. Also, the cover image in this post is the correct September cover. The image on the C&RL News Web site will be updated as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Encouraging and developing quality research skills in students is an essential component of a successful library instruction program. Librarians at Binghamton University collaborated with classroom faculty to survey both full-time faculty and teaching assistants in order to assess how students really conduct research, and incorporated the results into their instruction program. Read about the survey results and responses in “Critical research practices at Binghamton University.”

One way is to engage and motivate students is make learning more hands-on and experiential. In her article “Service learning and engagement in the academic library,” Nancy K. Herther describes the challenges and successes of library participation in courses that promote this type of active, community-based learning. Engagement and motivation are also essential to recruiting and retaining new library professionals. The East Carolina University Joyner Library provides “A different kind of fellowship” for library support staff who are attending library school to help them gain professional-level experience. Northwestern University considered issues of motivation in reworking the training of preprofessional interns. Carol Doyle provides tips for “Rethinking preprofessional training to improve work quality” in this issue.

After a short break, C&RL News will return in September. Enjoy your summer!

Encouraging teaching faculty to incorporate library resources in their courses can sometimes be a daunting task. Getting the proper resources in the hands of students requires creative promotion and collaboration. The Ohio State University Library tackled the problem of promoting library resources in the age of Wikipedia by introducing a grant program to compensate classroom faculty (and librarians) who incorporate electronic databases into online courses. Nancy Courtney details this innovative program in her article “Paying faculty to use library resources.”

Special collections are often one of the most interesting, and overlooked, part of any research library. Cataloging and providing usable access points to archival material are the first steps in “Exposing hidden collections.” In this issue, Victoria Steele discusses efforts in bringing collections to light at UCLA. Once collections are findable, how can they be promoted to and used by the college community? Matthew Reynolds and Dale Sauter of East Carolina University write about a course project aimed at “Engaging undergraduates in special collections through English composition.”

New modes of scholarly communication can ease the barriers to access and allow for collaboration between librarians and faculty authors. Marie Garrett outlines how the University of Tennessee is participating in the future of scholarly publishing through its “Newfound Press” project.

Creative yet manageable library assignments are critical to the success of any information literacy program. But sometimes assignments go awry, despite the best intentions of librarians and faculty. Nina McHale provides tips on dealing with library assignments gone bad in her article “Eradicating the rogue assignment.” A podcast interview with McHale is also available.

Of course students won’t be able to complete even the best library assignment without a basic knowledge of the concepts presented in instruction sessions. Suzanne Julian and Kimball Benson discuss the use of clickers as an in-class assessment tool at Brigham Young University in their article “Clicking your way to library instruction assessment.” While it is only May, it’s not too early to start planning events for the fall. Cathy Carpenter details Georgia Tech’s experiences in “Celebrating Constitution Day.” The tips in Cathy’s article can be applied to many other sorts of events, as well.

It seems like just yesterday that we gathered in Philadelphia for Midwinter, but now it is time to start thinking about the upcoming ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim. ACRL committees and sections are offering a wide array of programs at this year’s conference. A full list of programs and meetings is available in the handy removable preliminary program in this issue. Join us from June 26–July 2 in sunny California.

Technology. From the development of the printing press to the first telephone reference service to systems like the Zatocoder featured on this month’s cover to Web 2.0, librarians have had to figure out how to best use new technologies to serve our users.

A logical first step in dealing with a new technological landscape is learning. Librarians at the University of Michigan developed the “MLibrary 2.0” training program so interested staff members could discover Web 2.0 tools through structured play. A major theme of the Web 2.0 world is the individual as content creator and publisher. Daisy Benson and Selene Colburn of the University of Vermont took inspiration from the “Party photo phenomenon” and involved students in a promotional campaign for their chat reference service. At Georgia Tech, a contest to create short Flash animations promoted the library while appealing to student’s creativity. Jon Bodnar, Alison Valk, and Brian Mathews give an overview in “Challenging your students.”

Technology is also a major influence on the 21st-century workplace. In this month’s presidential theme article, Pat Hawthorne and Nicole A. Cooke use the work of futurist Mark Penn to discuss “Trendspotting and microtrends in academic libraries.” Jennifer Duncan provides a closer look at the life of a stay-at-home worker, one of the trends discussed by Hawthorne and Cooke, in her article “Working from afar.”

Make sure to take a look at all of the other great articles and columns in this issue as well, including Internet resources on Zoology, more profiles of 2008 ACRL award winners, and a fascinating look at the resolution of the AAAS/ JSTOR controversy in the Scholarly Communication column.

The March 2008 issue on C&RL News is now available online and in the mail. A big challenge facing college and university libraries today is raising awareness and changing perceptions of what we have to offer. The library must work to compete with a wide variety of education and entertainment options for the attention of potential users. Creative marketing is one way to raise awareness of libraries across the campus community.

In this month’s issue, Elizabeth M. Karle of St. Mary’s College addresses “Invigorating the academic library experience” through outreach and programming. She details five successful programs that worked to raise the profile of her library with students and faculty. Producing programming can often lead to opportunities to work with groups outside the library. At Miami University of Ohio, the library collaborated with campus and community organizations in hosting a well-received Japanese cultural festival. Stacy Brinkman and Frances Weinstein Yates write about this unique experience in their article “Promoting partnership” and provide tips for creating successful collaborative programs of any type. Richard Fyffe and William C. Welburn write about potential partnerships of a different kind in “ETDs, scholarly communication, and campus collaboration.” Fyffe and Welburn examine the challenges, opportunities, and potential benefits of ETD programs across the campus community in this month’s scholarly communication article.

To help you better prepare for the upcoming ALA election, the ACRL Board of Directors asked the two candidates for ALA President to respond to a set of questions about their candidacies and vision for the association. The responses from Camila Alire and J. Linda Williams are available in this issue. A list of ACRL members running for ALA Council is also provided. Make sure to vote in the election, beginning March 14.

Make sure to check out all of the other great content this month, including profiles of some of the 2008 ACRL award winner such as Dr. Peter Hernon of Simmons College, ACRL’s 2008 Academic/ Research Librarian of the Year. Enjoy!

The February 2008 issue of C&RL News is now available online and in the mail. This month’s issue features two articles covering librarians on the road. Last month, Russell A. Hall outlined the concept of the “embedded librarian” in a classroom setting. In this issue, Susan Sharpless Smith and Lynn Sutton of Wake Forest University take the concept out of the classroom in their article “Embedded librarians: On the road in the Deep South.” They report on their experiences providing research assistance and technology services as students visited Civil Rights sites and participated in service learning in Gulf Coast libraries ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. Their project is the winner of the 2008 ACRL Instruction Section Innovation Award. Librarian travels aren’t limited to the United States. In her article “Real World/Life Rules,” Katherine Furlong of Lafayette College discusses her role as an information literacy librarian during two choir tours of Europe. She describes both the joys and the challenges of taking library services on the road, along with providing useful advice for planning and executing for travel projects.

This issue also features information on “Promoting faculty success” through a reinvigorated faculty association by Brett Spencer and Jennifer McClure, a scholarly communication column on free online access to publicly funded NIH research, statements from the candidates for ACRL vice-president/president-elect, and Internet resources on accounting and auditing sites by Colleen D. Anderson. Of course don’t ignore the rest of the great articles and columns in this month’s issue, including another exciting edition of “Job of a Lifetime.”

As the weather gets colder (at least in places like Chicago!) and the NFL playoffs get started, many people are making last-minute adjustments to their fantasy football teams. While most likely not knowing that they are applying critical information literacy skills. Paul Waelchli examines this connection between fantasy sports and information literacy instruction in his article “Librarians’ sport of choice.” Waelchli and his colleagues at the University of Dubuque used fantasy sports as the jumping off point for teaching information literacy to incoming student athletes. Russell A. Hall provides a look at a different method of teaching information literacy, becoming “The ‘embedded’ librarian in a freshman speech class.” Hall became a full participant in a course in an attempt to become active in the entire learning and research process.

In addition to football, this January represents the start of a major national election cycle, with the Iowa caucuses kicking off the 2008 race for the White House. In this month’s Internet Resources column, Lorena O’English details a wide range of election resources on the Web. These sites can help you, and your patrons, make informed decisions before going to the polls. And please, get out and vote for the candidates of your choice. Be sure to take a look at the slate of candidates for office in the upcoming ACRL elections, as well. And take an active role in your association by voting in the ALA elections.

Two articles this month focus on the challenges and opportunities of library renovations. Stephanie J. Graves details her experience providing instructional services outside the library as a “Homeless instruction librarian” during a renovation project at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Renovations also provide an opportunity for reflection on services and philosophies. The Biomedical Library at the University of California-San Diego used their renovation project as an opportunity to explore the library “brand.” Nancy F. Stimson walks us through their branding experiences in “Library change as branding opportunity.”

Do you Facebook? Have a MySpace page? Wonder how exactly libraries and librarians can take advantage of these popular social networking tools? This month’s Internet Resources column by Cliff Landis provides tips for getting friendly with your users through the world of “Social networking sites.” Finding new avenues to reach out to students and promote information literacy can be difficult. But rewarding. Robert Miller describes his experiences reaching out to students through online student academic organizations in his article “Join the club.”
