We were blessed to serve a single mother by helping to provide her children with clothing to start off the new school year with! She has been visiting one of our partner churches for the past few Sundays and has expressed how suprised she is by how loving and sincere all of the members are. She has never before felt the love of God as much as she does there. It is truly awesome to see how God works in people's lives!

One of our clients is currently living in a park with her dogs. She came to us for assistance over six months ago, and we helped her by providing some necessary items. At first glance, it would appear that she is worse off now than she was before. However, that is not the case. By God's grace she has put a life of prostitution behind her and is now following a path that the Lord has shown her.

All of these stories come straight from our case managers. To God be all the glory for the great work that happens everyday at Cornerstone!

We had a client come to our emergency services department looking very discouraged. She had been looking for a job for months and was ready to give up. We were able to help her out by giving her some new ideas to apply to her job search. We also prayed together, which seemed to encourage her! She was then provided with some food and referrals of her needs. Praise God for the power of encouraging words!

It is always exciting to see the success of our participants' children. One of our single mothers is proud to announce that she now has two high school graduates attending college. This mother has been a source of inspiration and motivation to both of her children. It is awesome to watch her teach her children perseverance through life's difficulties.

A father of two entered the program this month. He is interested in going back to school and is already working with another faith-based agency to help him improve his relationship with his children. Though he is overwhelmed with so many responsibilities, he is hopefully beginning to see that he has some folks willing to help!

A woman lost her adult son in the middle of June. With the funeral expenses and missing work for almost two weeks, she was behind on rent. We were able to help her with one month of her rent to prevent her from being evicted. This was a chance for Cornerstone to meet the needs of someone who was in a season of grief over the loss of a loved one.

One of our program participants graduated from a trade school with a Certificate as a Medical Assistant. She is now beginning a new life for herself, as she searches employment.

After completing two years in the Cornerstone Comprehensive Care Program, a single mother of three is now able to financially support her family. She is excited about her success and is willing to do whatever it takes to keep her family self sufficient. With tears of gratitude, she said, "I don't know what we would have done if it were not for Cornerstone." We are looking forward to hearing all that God is going to do in and through her life!

Excited about finishing his last semester of Junior college, one of our program participants is now making plans to attend a four year university.

Cold Fuzzies 7.13.11

A father of one exits the program next month. He has had the opportunity to explore career options and go back to school while in the program. Please keep praying for his salvation.

A single mother went back to work for the first time in several years. She is diligent about saving and excited to be able to provide for her family.

One of our single moms has decided she would like to become a home owner in the future. She has begun to gather the information she needs in order to learn more about home buying and other financial issues. She has also started working harder to make sure she benefits and grows from her experience in this transitional housing program. She is meeting bi-weekly with her case manager and working on many areas of her life that she did not think she was ready to handle at this point. She has started attending topical classes at Gateway and enjoys what she’s learning. Although she has not made the decision to follow Christ yet, she is beginning to understand the value Christ may have in her life.

A single mother of two decided to exit the program early. She believes she will be able to maintain her expenses without our assistance. This mom is maintaining her full-time employment while looking for another job with greater pay.

God sent us a special man to minister to. He had just been released from jail and was looking for another place but found Cornerstone instead. He met with Jerry from our Welcome Back program and we were able to give him the cell phone he needed to look for work. The Lord works in mysterious ways. Praise God.

A Quick Look: New Creations

The New Creations team is growing through the grace of God! We have finished the remodel at The Promise House and it truly is a house full of God’s promises. The army of the Lord came together to help transform the home and through faithful volunteers, the women are being transformed as well. Lives are truly being changed. The New Creations reentry mentoring program at Dawson State Jail is well under way and the team of faithful mentors is growing, but we need many more. If you feel led to provide life-on-life support to a woman being released from prison back to Tarrant County, please let us know. We could sure use you! Our first ladies from Dawson will release in the fall. We praise God for the faithful mentors serving them and eager to love them and serve them after release. We invite you to join our team. Your life will never be the same after you’ve been blessed by serving in prisoner reentry.

A Quick Look: The New Life Center

We have seen several clients making great strides this year at the New Life Center. One graduated with his Associate’s Degree from TCC and two are making plans to transfer to UTA in the fall. By August, we anticipate a college or job training attendance of over 0%. We are also excited about the new mentor training offered through Cornerstone. We look forward to new mentorships at the New Life Center that we are praying give our residents encouragement and hope to excel in every area of their lives.

It has been a busy time at Cornerstone as we work with an increasing number of churches and organizations. We have had three luncheons and tours for prospective Network Partners as well as a luncheon for current Network Partners to share information about the work God is doing through CAN. We now have over eighty Network Partners that have signed the Memorandum of Understanding. The addition of more partners gives us many opportunities to work with churches and organizations to meet the needs of people in our community.

Remembering Dr. Tommy Teague 1953-2011

Dr. Tommy Teague, a friend, board member of Cornerstone, and my Pastor went to be with the Lord on the morning of June 23, 2011 in Israel, while shepherding a group on a tour of the Holy Land. He has provided tremendous leadership in the growth of Cornerstone Assistance Network. Pastor Tommy Teague was Senior Pastor of North Richland Hills Baptist Church for the past 13 years. Cornerstone was started by North Richland Hills Baptist Church 20 years ago. Pastor Tommy had a deep love for those less fortunate and believed that the Church should reach beyond its walls to those in need. Pastor Tommy faithfully served on the board of Cornerstone himself his entire tenure at NRHBC, rather than appointing another staff member as the church’s representative. He is now where he always wanted to be but his leadership and encouragement will be missed by all who knew him. Please pray for his family, including his church family, and many others whose lives have been enriched because of his love for His Lord, Jesus Christ.

One of our female clients was on the brink of eviction. She had been laid off and the bills were piling up. When she went to court, the judge ruled in her favor. Cornerstone was able to help give her a second chance through HPRP, giving her hope for the future. Praise God for the second chances He gives us and the hope He provides!

One of our ladies completed the Homeless Prevention Program in May. She left the program in a much better place than when she started. She now has a sustainable job and a much better relationship with her landlord. She exited the program a prepared, self-sufficient woman.

Not long ago, a beautiful five year old girl came into my office with her dad and sister. While we were busy starting the meeting, she quietly walked over to a poster on my wall. The poster summarizes the Bible in fifty words. She began to read, and it was so powerful we paused to listen: God Made, Adam Bit, Noah Arked, Adam Split, Joseph Ruled, Jacob Fooled, Bush Talked, Moses Balked, Pharaoh Plagued, People Walked, Sea Divided, Tablets Guided, Promise Landed, Saul Freaked, David Peaked, Prophets Warned---Jesus Born, God Walked, Love Talked, Anger Crucified, Hope Died, Love Rose, Spirit Flamed, Word Spread and GOD REMAINED.

Warm Fuzzies 6.29.11

We recently experienced a very challenging interaction wherein a grandmother had been "taken captive" in her house. Her grandson, a drug user and dealer, commandeered the home and threatened her with violence if she contacted the authorities to try to eject him from the home. We were able to minister to her heart practically and through prayer. We also walked with her through the entire process of contacting the proper organizations and coming up with a safety plan as the situation was being addressed. The interaction was very intense, but very good as a ministry opportunity.

One of our single mothers recently found a job close to her home. The job has good hours and decent pay. She is grateful to have a job that is not only so close but also willing to work with her child's schedule.

Often, God speaks to our hearts and reminds us how blessed we really are. I came to work after sitting out our recent storms in the safety of my bathroom at home. Not long after I arrived, a couple walked into Cornerstone asking for food and clothing. They are homeless and sat out those same storms in a park cooking chicken on the grill. They asked God to protect them from the storms and to keep the storms away until their meal was cooked. I felt so blessed to have met these two wonderful people who rely on God for help in all the storms of life.

We have the pleasure of serving many people who have just been released from prison. I have had several of them touch my heart with the thankfulness they show for the redemption God has given them. We all need God’s grace and need to be just as grateful for the second chance HE gives us. I am truly humbled to touch the face of God in the people we meet at Cornerstone.

I’ve had the privilege of working with one of our partner churches to minister to a couple for the past two years. There have been many ups and downs, but they have stood by them through them all. They are now living independently. Our partner church mirrors the faithfulness of God in their ministry to this couple.

I first heard about Cornerstone when my husband was in a Bible Study with Mike Doyle, who put us on CAN's mailing list. I decided to volunteer for Cornerstone because I saw a chance to help people. I've been a receptionist here since 2010. I answer phones and greet guests. Recently, I had the opportunity to supervise a group of volunteer teenagers working on Cornerstone's landscaping. The thing I enjoy most about volunteering at Cornerstone is the positive attitude of the people- happy energy! One thing I would say to anyone considering becoming a CAN Volunteer is that there are many ways to get involved from a little bit to a lot. God seldom sends people to your door needing your help; you have to put yourself out there where they are. Cornerstone has a constant supply of people with a variety of needs. Everyone has something to offer.

My wife I first heard about Cornerstone in the early 1990's from a member of the Sunday School Class I teach at the First Baptist Church of Hurst. Pat Black reported that she had been to the Cornerstone warehouse and she indicated that they could use volunteers. From the beginning, we could witness the valuable contributions Cornerstone was making to the Tarrant County community. We also assisted in moving the warehouse to Sylvania Avenue and then to East Loop 820.

Mary and I felt that we could serve others and perhaps make a difference to them in that community. From this service, we learned that the Cornerstone Community Center was collecting toys received at the warehouse to be used for their Christmas Store. After my wife retired, she and other women from our church taught English to Spanish speaking women at the Community Center for several years. After I retired, I volunteered as a weekly Bible Study teacher for homeless men and women. In recent years, this Bible Study was changed to a Bible Study for Senior Adults. I continue to teach the Bible study each Friday morning.

We especially enjoy being with the Staff, Volunteers and clients at CAN. We know that there are many places that volunteers could serve but we try to find those situations that will maximize our efforts for the Lord Jesus Christ. We feel that this is the best local place where our services would be most beneficial.

In addition to areas of ministry I have already enumerated, I also acquired a ministry through Cornerstone about three years ago. This opportunity came to me through a conversation between CAN Directors Chaplain Jerry Cabluck of WelcomeBack/Tarrant County and Director of Network Development, Jesse Vasquez. Chaplain Cabluck mentioned to Jesse that the WelcomeBack/Tarrant County program needed an reliable volunteer at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Fort Worth District Re-entry Center for ex-offenders. My service is required every Tuesday and Thursday and amounts to well over 600 hours a year, not counting my personal time through direct contact, mentoring and telephone contacts with parolees. I have subsequently been designated as the Voluntary Chaplain at that office.

God has richly blessed us through volunteering at Cornerstone Assistance Network along with our church involvement in teaching and mission work. We would recommend getting involved.

I first learned about Cornerstone from a referral from the Waco Christian Women's Job Corps executive director. When she found out we were moving to the North Richland Hills area, she told me I needed to look up Kristen Horton, who was, at the time, the site coordinator for the Cornerstone Christian Women's Job Corps. I began volunteering at Cornerstone CWJC in September 2009. I taught the Life Skills/Personal Development classes to the women. I love teaching the women - I am so blessed by their lives and their intelligence. I feel God is truly using me and my talents now to serve him. I also serve as a volunteer on the Cornerstone CWJC Advisory Council and love doing that as well. The thing I love most about volunteering at Cornerstone are the women I meet and hearing their stories and how many of them have come from very adverse backgrounds but want a better life for themselves and their families. I love sharing what God has done for me in my life and what He wants to do for them. You will be blessed if you are looking for a rewarding volunteer position by serving at Cornerstone CWJC. We desperately need Christian women who would be willing to devote an hour or so each week to mentoring our students. This is such a blessing to do this and I speak from personal experience. I first heard about Cornerstone from my daughter, Beckie Hinze, who was volunteering in the Christian Women's Job Corps program. I chose to volunteer my time because of the scope of your ministry at CAN, especially Christian Women's Job Corps. I taught a Bible study class for CWJC, and now I volunteer each Friday at the reception desk.

In April, donations made in my honor were used to establish a legacy fund for women completing the CWJC program. I enjoy volunteering at Cornerstone because of the realization of making a difference in people's lives...and getting to know the men and women of God who serve there.

If I could say one thing to someone considering becoming a Cornerstone Volunteer, I would say, "It is a great ministry with so many different areas of service...give it a try...you will be blessed. I always get many thank-yous for doing nothing but answering the phone...you will be appreciated, no matter what you can - or can't - do!"

After working in a pharmacy for a number of years, one of our program participants is now studying to be a pharmacy tech. She has been encouraged by coworkers who have been impressed with her work. We are proud of the steps she is taking to further her education.

We were blessed this month to be able to assist a mom and her two children. The mom was recently in a car accident and suffered extensive bruising and other injuries, leaving her unable to work.

Things are looking up for a family of 7. The mother was able to gain an additional client through her cleaning service and her husband has also been able to find semi-consistent day labor jobs recently. He continues to apply for permanent employment, but they are making progress.

One of our ladies recognizes her need for God. At one of the home visits, she sat with her case manager for two hours asking questions regarding church, God, and the Bible. She is thirsty for truth and is diligently seeking it. She and her family have started attending church regularly. We are excited that she is searching and are praying that she will soon trust in God for her salvation.

Warm Fuzzies 6.8.11

A single mother of four children has been in a custody battle for 3 of her kids. This has led to her running behind on rent. She has taken out loans, but they are handicapping her and draining the money she does have. Added to that, she received a notice to vacate her apartment complex. Thankfully, Cornerstone was able to help and this family was not evicted.

What a blessing that one of our HPRP clients came to Cornerstone in March. Her son caught pneumonia in April and she caught it soon after. If she hadn’t already been receiving rental assistance through CAN, they would have fallen further behind on rent and probably been evicted.

A family successfully completed the program and moved into a rent house. The wife recently lost her job, which will decrease their income by 50%. She has expressed her concern, but she and her husband desire to continue moving forward for their family's sake. Thankfully, they will be able to meet their monthly bills with budgeting techniques they learned from the program. Please pray she finds another job quickly!

A divorced mother of 1 started training in all areas of her job and has been given a lead position that includes supervising other employees. She believes that she will be eligible for the managerial program soon, and has a long-term goal to find a more stable and consistent administrative assistant or other office-type job.

We had a client come for an intake via the New Creations program. She was eligible to receive an Access Wireless phone to assist with her transition into society, having recently been released from incarceration. During the interaction, the Holy Spirit began strongly moving, significantly guiding the prayer. As ministry occurred, the tears began flowing. This client strongly sensed the love of God—it was written all over her face. These powerful moments of ministry is what Cornerstone is all about.

Warm Fuzzies 6.1.11

I spoke with a client who was experiencing severe medical issues—namely she’s recovering from surgery for cancer. As a result, she was unable to work and behind on her rent. The network partner who referred her to Cornerstone has walked with her through this very challenging season. I was very blessed to pray with her for healing and God’s provision. We were able to provide rental assistance to keep a roof over her head as God keeps arranging circumstances in her life for His ultimate glory.

Last year, we were able to help a young woman suffering from cancer by providing food and clothing for her family. She came back this month for further assistance. Her cancer had spread, and because she was expecting, wasn’t able to undergo more surgery or therapy. We were able to provide food, clothing, and baby items, and prayed for her healing and God’s comfort as she faces more surgery this month. Please join us in praying for her.

What would it be like to raise seven children on your own? I can’t imagine what one mom we have been helping goes through on a daily basis. She came to us asking for very little, though their need is great. God calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves and we know it’s only through His goodness we are able to help those with material needs. We were able to give this family food, clothing, and a dryer. Beyond that, we were able to share the love of God with her and she knows He loves her because of the love we showed her in HIS name.

God sent a 22 year old woman to us to minister to. She lost her job and her husband works odd jobs to bring in what income he can. They are in desperate need of jobs and a steady source of income. More importantly, she is in need of the hope and peace that only God can give. She showed me the scar on her arm from a recent suicide attempt. We helped her find interview- appropriate clothing and provided emergency food for their family. She felt uplifted when she left, and we know it’s because we were able to minister to her as God’s hands and feet.

We received a call this month from an elderly, homebound woman that had no food in her home and no family or friends in the area that could help. We were blessed to be able to get her food, a can opener (she had been opening up cans with a knife!), and some other household items she was in desperate need of. We also set her up with some local services that could provide long-term assistance. What a tremendous opportunity for us to encourage and pray for our new friend.

Homeless Prevention Program

As one of the many “first contacts” people have with Cornerstone, I strive to show the love of Christ to those we serve, whether over the phone or in person during an intake appointment.

I have worked at Cornerstone since November 2010, and I have seen the love of God through the employees who work here. They strive to love each person they come into contact with deeply as they fulfill their individual role. Each employee is essential to our mission of “Uniting together in Christian love to meet the needs of people,” as we offer hospitality, particularly to those in a moment of need. What a blessing that our employees and volunteers understand our mission and strive to help us achieve it.

My main role at Cornerstone is serving as the case manager for our short-term rental assistance clients. In my job, I am able to come alongside a family for three months to help with their rent and utilities, when they would otherwise be on the street. There are many families in need in Tarrant County that I come in contact with in person and on the phone. There are so many needs that we are not able to help everyone, but we do our best to refer them to other organizations that may be able to help. Please lift up a prayer for those families as you think of the hurting in our community.

My encouragement to you today is to show the love of Christ where you are. My hope and prayer is that your service to God occurs both inside and outside of the walls of Cornerstone. We are so grateful for our numerous volunteers, who do such a great job. Together, we can be a part of God’s kingdom of love, compassion and hospitality.

Warm Fuzzies 14

One of our program participants is successfully finishing her first semester of college. She has been encouraged and motivated by her success- and has already signed up for the next semester, which she is eager to begin.

Despite unexpected health and financial difficulties, one of our single mothers has shown tremendous endurance in striving towards self-sufficiency. She is demonstrating to her children that when things get hard, you persevere and do not give up. This single mother is using a difficult situation as an opportunity to show herself and those around her that she is able to overcome the hard things in life.

One of our single moms attended the spring workshop and was excited because she learned how to better-understand her children. Equipped with the knowledge that we all learn differently and are “smart” in different ways, she now recognizes the gifts God has given her children and rejoices in how each child is uniquely made. She is helping her children identify the direction and unique calling God has placed on their lives.

A married father of 5 was able to return to work! He has aspirations of increasing his training in order to reach his budget, employment, and income goals to support his family- all while his wife attends TCC.

A single mother of 1 is embarking on a new business venture in sales. She will continue in her current position until her personal business is able to sustain their family. Although she works on the weekends, she is trying to find a single parents group and is pursuing church attendance during the week for growth, support, and accountability.

I had a gentleman come in via Mercy Heart. As we sat down and talked about his circumstances, he began to share that he was experiencing a great deal of conflict with his significant other. This was the “straw that broke the camel’s back” for him, as he was already in dire straits, which brought him to Cornerstone in the first place. Strongly prompted by the Holy Spirit, I pressed in and eventually led him to tears through prayer. I don’t know exactly what God did in his heart in that moment; I do know, however, that it was powerful and good.

Another interaction involved a family who was soon to be evicted. The husband and wife had both started new jobs and needed several weeks for the money to start rolling in. Due to impending eviction, however, they had nowhere to go during the interim. This challenge was further compounded because they have a child who’s only several months old. I was able to obtain special discretion from one of my funding sources to gather a storage and application fee at a new apartment building. Also, we found some relatives who were willing to help the family during the transitional period.

Prayer Request
A single grandmother of one has secured part-time employment with the opportunity to increase her hours in the future. Please pray that this job will be consistent and she will be able to find greater employment soon.
