New Middle School Schedule Ready For Launch

The Canyons Board of Education on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012 unanimously approved a new framework for scholastic instruction and intervention in Canyons District middle schools.

The schedule, which has been endorsed by the Canyons Education Association, will be used at Indian Hills and Midvale middle schools in the coming school year. Lessons learned at those schools during the pilot phase will assist in the refinement of the schedule before it is implemented districtwide in fall 2013.

The new schedule carves out more time for core courses for sixth- through eighth-grades while also providing students flexibility to participate in a wide range of elective classes. This flexibility is made possible through an A- and B-day alternating schedule.

Under the new framework, the students’ days are made up of five 72-minute class periods with 40-minutes “intervention and extension” sections within some of those classes. The aim with these sections is to give extra support students who struggled to master the concepts from the previous day or, if the students have demonstrated proficiency, to provide additional, in-depth instruction.

Another major part of the new schedule is that, although some classes are taught every other day, students are required to attend English Language Arts and mathematics courses every day.

However, parents may note that the schedule is flexible enough to allow all middle school students the opportunity to take two full-year elective courses. The reporting period for grading will be in 12-week intervals, which equates to roughly 60 days per reporting period.

The proposal, created following community feedback on recommendations presented last spring by the Boundary Steering Committee, aims to better accommodate student enrollment and create cleaner school feeder patterns.

The proposal, presented Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, would:

Build a new Crescent View in Draper (the District owns property on 1300 East).

Create Crescent View's boundary as south of 12300 South, to include about 1,250 students.

Eliminate at least four Crescent View school bus routes and save more than $88,000 a year.

Extend Mount Jordan Middle School's boundary to 12300 South.

Set the Indian Hills boundary from 10600 South to 12300 South (and Dimple Dell) and from the east bench to the new TRAX line, to include all of Altara, Sunrise, and Lone Peak elementary boundaries. This would include about 1,125 students.

Result in the following projected, in-boundary enrollments for the other middle schools: Albion, 763; Butler, 774; Eastmont, 825; Midvale, 853; and Union, 938.

Allow the existing Crescent View facility, which is near a TRAX stop, to be used for magnet programs, or preschool and all-day kindergarten program expansion.

Another part of the proposal would align the new Corner Canyon High School's boundaries to include all students living south of 12300 South. The Board last fall approved elementary and high school boundaries to be implemented in the 2013-2014 school year.

Still to be determined: if, when, and where to build a new Crescent View Middle School; how to pay for it; and when to implement new middle school boundaries. A $20 million renovation, but not rebuild, to Crescent View was included in the $250 million bond voters approved in 2010. Several Board members expressed interest in exploring the possibility of another bond.

To view details or listen to the presentation, please visit http://www.boarddocs.com/ut/canyons/Board.nsf and click Agenda Item 2A. The majority of U.S. colleges and universities grant college credit or advanced placement for a score of 3 or above on AP exams.

Since 2009, Canyons School District has increased the number of students participating in AP from 1,678 to 2,035. The District also has slightly improved the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher from 72 percent in 2009 to 73 percent in 2011. The increased AP participation and pass rates indicates Canyons is identifying motivated, academically-prepared students who are likely to benefit most from AP coursework, the College Board reports.

“This school district has achieved something very remarkable. It managed to open the doors of its AP classrooms to many more students, while also increasing the percentage of students earning high enough AP Exam grades to stand out in the competitive college admission process and qualify for college credit and placement,” said Trevor Packer, the College Board’s senior vice president of Advanced Placement and college readiness.

Inclusion on the 2nd Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on the following criteria:

Examination of three years of AP data, from 2009 to 2011

Increase in participation in/access to AP by at least 4 percent in large districts, at least 6 percent in medium districts and at least 11 percent in small districts

Performance levels maintained or improved when comparing the percentage of students in 2011 scoring a 3 or higher to those in 2009, or the school already has attained a performance level in which more than 70 percent of the AP students are scoring a 3 or higher

A steady or increasing percentage of exams taken by African-American, Hispanic/Latino and American Indian/Alaska Native students

Participation in college-level AP courses can level the playing field for underserved students, give them the confidence needed to succeed in college, and raise standards and performance in key subjects like science and math,” said College Board President Gaston Caperton. “The AP Honor Roll districts are defying expectations by expanding access while enabling their students to maintain or improve their AP Exam scores.”

Canyons Superintendent David Doty said the honor validates the vision and hard work of Canyons’ staff, including Chief Academic Officer Dr. Ginger Rhode, Director of Evidence-Based Learning (Secondary) Dr. Hollie Pettersson, dedicated principals and teachers.

“This is an incredible honor for Canyons School District,” Dr. Doty said. “Increasing AP participation and success rates of our students has been one of the District’s top priorities since it began operations in July 2009, and I am thrilled that the College Board has endorsed our efforts to prepare all students for higher education.”

Canyons School District’s college- and career-ready academic plan includes awarding Utah’s first college- and career-ready diplomas in spring 2011; giving the ACT EXPLORE, PLAN and ACT college-entrance test to all eighth-, 10th- and 11th-graders, respectively; rebuilding schools to accommodate 21st century education needs with a $250 million bond; and reconfiguring grades in fall 2013 to move sixth-graders to middle school and ninth-graders into high schools.

A top-notch class of Hillcrest High students were awarded International Baccalaureate diplomas and certificates on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012. In all, 29 students from the class of 2011 were given IB diplomas and another 35 received IB certificates.

“This program is doing exactly what we want it to do — deliver high rigor and prepare students for college,” said Canyons Superintendent David S. Doty, who spoke at the ceremony. “I would like to congratulate all the students, and their teachers, for this stellar accomplishment.”

The students who received the diplomas and certificates graduated in the spring from Hillcrest, one of seven IB schools in Utah. Hillcrest’s administration plans the ceremony each year on the first Monday in January, when many of the IB-award recipients, now college students, are home for the holidays.

Thanks in large part to its academic focus, Hillcrest has been ranked as one of the best high schools in the country. This summer, the Midvale school made Newsweek’s list of top U.S. schools. It was ranked 445th, and was one of only three Utah schools on the list. Hillcrest also ranked No. 356 on the Washington Post's rankings of the country's best high schools.

International Baccalaureate, which is overseen by a nonprofit agency in Switzerland, is offered in 141 countries and aims to prepare students for life in a global economy. This is the 43rd year that IB programs have been provided to students who seek a curriculum that emphasizes critical and creative-thinking skills.

To earn an IB diploma, students must take six IB courses in at least five different subject areas. They must pass some tough exams, write a comprehensive essay and complete service in schools and communities.

Click here to see a story in the Salt Lake Tribune.
