BIRD ON A WIRE Artists & Galleries

Make-up artist Colleen Van Rensburg is currently exhibiting some portraits shot in collaboration with photographer Patrick Ryan at Exposure Gallery at The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock till the 11th August.

The "Bodyblocks" show was curated by photographer Leah Hawker and features many photographers and collaborators exploring the human form in a variety of styles.A must see!

September Update!

Spring, sprung, and then blew away with the Northwester that's been buffeting our shores over the past week. Whilst that's been happening, Melanie Cleary photographed the Sony Print Campaign for an agency out of Dubai for Sony Africa, she also packed her suitcase and plimsolls for a commission shot in the Maldives for FA Cosmetics, by Schwarzkopf – Europe's most popular brand of bath and shower products.

Look out for Morne van Zyl's recent commissions for Mens Health and GQ Magazine. Alexia Kondylis, Stylist and Theo Klompje, Photographer were busy on a project to be released in the near future. Kate Boswell, Stylist and Jacques de Villiers, Photographer have been shooting for a brand new publication which is scheduled for launch in October 2008.

Lots more happening, so we'll keep you updated as we go. Feel free to respond, irritate us and send wellingtons and brollies, spring wishes, free gifts and chocolates our way. Oh – and lots of fabulously creative work.

Fog Blog

When the coastal fog comes rolling in it truly feels like the end of winter, or summer without wind in Cape Town. Something new is that my black cat Archie has started talking to me – I mean really talking, like I'm the object of his entire affection – it's not about food – because the bowl is full, it's not about insanity – because I'm still legally sane… ah it must be because I changed my fragrance today. There's nothing like a platter of chili poppers to warm up your cheeks and give you that post-chili glow that under the release of endless endorphins makes one looks years younger in five minutes. Chivalry is definitely dead.. when last did anyone, let alone a South African male, hold the lift door open, in your recent experience. Today a guy let the doors shut on me although he could clearly see I was laden like a Himalayan Mule on a twenty-one day trek and he simply ignored the two women following hot on his heels to make it, by the hair of their Manolo heels, into the lift. Manwithoutmanners alighted at 1st floor which he COULD have taken the stairs to reach (clearly the boep indicated that he never takes the stairs). Behind closed doors again I commented on the lack of manners and the unflinching reply from impeccably clad female clutching decaf latte was "that's why I'm gay" and we both had a good giggle. So take a moment, to smile, connect, purr or miaow, whatever your desired choice of speech and hold the lift door open for whoever is about to break a nail in the effort to make it through the six-inch gap that is life.

A Week in Words

A week in words… Happy Birthday Madiba!

We heard, watched and read Happy Birthday Madiba on TV – every single channel, from Morning Edition to CNN, the office cleaners were singing along all day and never tired, it was on Myspace, YouTube, Facebook, Skype, Gmail, Bird on a Wire mail, Umhlobo Wenene, Radio Five, Talk Radio, every newspaper, adbreaks… and all Madiba said was "Thanks for wishing an old retired man with no power, happy birthday – may you all enjoy your day…" What a mensch!

The wellingtons are retiring in the passage and the sunblock came out of the cupboard very briefly. Rugby was disappointing, and to the winner go the spoils – another shrimp on the Barbie in Brisbane – wait until you come to SA boys.

Man United thanks for coming to SA! To Chiefs – well done, well played, very well indeed. The Vuvuzelas were heard long into the night. Here's to working, friends, winter, rain and little known SA actress Bridget McCarthy clinching a performance role in a movie by Mira Nair.

Watch the birdie they always say – where does that come from, what does it mean – all that happened was this huge flash of magnesium that left the subject blind for several minutes seeing multiple flashes with their eyes closed… things have changed a lot with red eye flash fill-in… like the photos you take of your pets – why do their eyes always look green or red? A round of Jagermeisters for the table please – oh you don't like Jagies? Ok Tequila for her then – oh with orange and sugar.

This is what Luke said i should do – pretend you're in a bar, you've had a couple of rounds and your tongue is loose.

Blahblahblah… Having never written a blog and not wanting to sound up my own a.. this is the best i could come up with at short notice, the site going live today… This is all very exciting. It all started with a meeting, a retrenchment, tears, then a new vision, freedom and blogdom, finding all my friends on FB, meetings at Deer Park Cafe with potential partners and it all started rolling and before we knew it BOW was born. We fancy a biking safari – not ones with engines – you know in the saddle under pedalpower, imagine just under your own steam, the challenge, the physical warfare with oneself… how many days? Five – nah. I'll watch the Tour de France instead.

It's mid Winter in Cape Town, the River Club flooded again this year, the shacks have washed away, the Olifants River is tearing its way through the flooded landscape and headlines read "Anger Grows over Flooding".. well who do you want to be angry with? God? Nature? How about thinking ahead and building homes on stilts – like in Vietnam, Thailand – when the monsoons and floods hit, you're well above ground. Homes on Stilts – a new South African concept in township living.
