 <itunes:author>Gaëtan Naulleau - Radio France</itunes:author>

Interview with Dirk Snellings, Laus Polyphoniae 2009 (Dutch)

 <itunes:author>Capilla Flamenca - JC Productions</itunes:author>

Interview with Dirk Snellings by Chantal De Waele from Radio Klara. Dirk gives background information about the program "De spirituele kracht van het ritueel". Capilla Flamenca will present this program during Laus Polyphoniae 2009.

Liturgische dagcyclus
Mariale officiegezangen in de pauselijke kapel anno 1450
Zaterdag 22 augustus

Zondag 23 augustus

En un gardin

 <itunes:author>Capilla Flamenca - JC Productions</itunes:author>

You are listening to: "De plus souvent" (Anonymous), "Vos, quid admiramini virginem/Gratissima virginis/Gaude gloriosa" by Philippus de Vitry and "Par maintes foys" by Jean Vaillant; 3 pieces of 14th century music recorded on Capilla Flamenca' s latest cd EN UN GARDIN. The four seasons of ars nova.

Find the cd in your nearest cd shop or online: http://www.cosmox.be/bestellen/en-un-gardin-les-quatre-s-capilla-flamenca-5425008318523

Thanks to their many qualities, the works on this cd show that at the end of the 14th century, the music of the Low Countries, which historically extended from the north of Holland across the province of Liège to what is now northern France, contains the germ of all the elements that were to form the basis of the 15th centurys remarkable musical flowering.

The numerous foundations in the principal churches and the formation of choir schools enabled composers and performers to make the Low Countries along the North Sea coast into a fertile source of musicians for the whole of Europe.

The path to European polyphony was thrown open, leading ultimately to its supreme manifestation in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Video recorded June 2009
Location: Kruidtuin, Leuven, Belgium

Interview with Dirk Snellings by Kurt Van Eeghem from Radio Klara. Dirk gives background information about the program "De Verloren Sone". Capilla Flamenca will present this program during "The day of Early Music".

Interview with Dirk Snellings, Rosa/Mia (Dutch)

 <itunes:author>Capilla Flamenca - JC Productions</itunes:author>

For years now, "Mia" is a very popular song in Belgium. The song was originally created and performed by Luc De Vos and his band Gorki. Last year, a teacher translated the original Dutch lyrics into Latin and the Capilla Flamenca converted the well known melody to a polyphonic song. Since "Mia" does not exist in ancient Latin, the new name of the song became "Rosa".

"Sterren komen, sterren gaan. Alleen Elvis blijft bestaan.

Christmas with the Capilla Flamenca

 <itunes:author>Capilla Flamenca - JC Productions</itunes:author>

Old and new Christmas songs

The Capilla Flamenca will offer a typical mixture of popular Christmas songs both in the vernacular and in Latin, such as "Puer nobis", "Een kindeken is ons geboren", and "Magnum nomen Domini". In the 15th and 16th centuries, such songs were often sung in the home. Furthermore, famous composers of that time, such as Antoine Brumel, Johannes Regis, and Hermann Finck combined these songs with Advent plainchant in exuberant polyphonic masterpieces. In turn, the mixed youth-choir Clari Cantus and the Leuven-based vocal ensemble Tempus Imperfectum will give voice to the "mirabile mysterium" with hymns to the Virgin by Lassus, Willaert, Mouton, and Britten.

Heinrich Isaac, Missa de Beata Maria Virgine and Mass-propers from the Choralis Constantinus

Heinrich Isaac's four-voice Missa de Beata Maria Virgine, together with polyphonic settings of Marian mass-proper plainchant, form the basis of a richly varied programme featuring not only vocal monophony and polyphony but also an important contribution from the organ.
Following 15th-century alternatim practices, the organist will improvise chant-based polyphony in the style of Isaac in alternation with the choir: a skill that both then as now bears witness to extraordinary musical talent! This concert will take place in the context of the colloquium "Polyphony for the Proper of the Mass in the Middle Ages and Renaissance", organised by the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Musicology Research Unit and the Alamire Foundation.<div class="feedflare">

12x12 - Tierkreis - Extracts from the concert in the Irish Chapel in Leuven (Belgium), November 8th 2007

 <itunes:author>Capilla Flamenca - JC Productions</itunes:author>

Two ensembles originating in Flanders, the Capilla Flamenca and Het Collectief, joined artistic forces to present a unique performance. The music world offers probably no greater contrast between two ensembles, and yet the groups have come up with a thematic common denominator: the zodiac.

Het Collectief discovered 'Tierkeis' by Karlheinz Stockhausen, a work inspired by signs of the zodiac and consisting of twelve short, concentrated melodies, supported by simple chords. Each melody illustrates the specific characteristics of a particular sign. The original version of this work composed in 1974 consisted of twelve music boxes each playing these characteristic tunes. Over the years, a number of chamber-music versions grew out of this material. In this programme, the work will be given additional colour by singers and by players of both modern and old instruments. The work is marked both by its uncomplicated harmoniousness and the radical avant-garde quality that we have come to expect from Stockhausen.

Capilla Flamenca's celebrated 'Zodiac' programme was there to bring both ensembles together.
In the fourteenth century, the Ars Nova emerged from France to sweep through Europe. This new art (of living) broke with the stiff and ponderous ideas from the past (Ars Antiqua).
The shape of Capilla Flamenca's 'Zodiac' programme was originally inspired by the splendid depictions of the signs of the zodiac that Duke Jean de Berry ordered from the Brothers Limburg.

In 12 x 12, the Ars Nova pieces, with their fine and beautiful (spiritual) texts, want to be an answer on the 12 binding forces going out of the Zodiac, for the human being as an higher creature. A story about transformation and freedom.
The two ensembles truly invade each other's territory with New Art --
Ars Nova, resulting in a fascinating historical bridge between highly divergent music styles, genres and periods. The whole becomes a surprising mix of vocal, instrumental, old, new and improvised music performed by twelve singers and musicians.

The making of Bellum & Pax

 <itunes:author>Capilla Flamenca - JC Productions</itunes:author>

This video gives an impression of the recording of the opening of the CD "Bellum & Pax". The recording was done in the "Parkabdij" in Heverlee, Belgium. Capilla Flamenca, Oltremontano and Psallentes were all performing during the opening tracks of the CD.

Music in this video is:
1. Intrada op L’homme armé, composed by Marnix De Cat
2. L’homme armé, composed by Anonymus

For centuries, war and peace (bellum & pax) have been accompanied by music. Music was present on the battlefield, of course: the sounding of the trumpet as a signal to gather or attack, drumbeats to recruit soldiers or set them marching, battle songs to raise morale among the troops or instill fear in the bosom of the enemy. Once the hostilities were over, there was singing and dancing in the streets to celebrate peace.

Many compositions are not an evocation of, but a reaction to the events in times of war. Works with clear political connotations were often composed around an existing melody (a cantus firmus) which evoked an immediate association with peace or war. The centuries-long preference of composers for using the song L'homme armé and the antiphon Da pacem is a striking one: these two melodies are among the most-used cantus firmi in the history of music.

The song L'homme armé was the musical foundation of about 50 masses and other compositions written between about 1433 and the end of the 17th century by Obrecht, Josquin, Brumel, Compère, La Rue, Senfl, Morales, Palestrina and others. The origin of the melody is unclear: it could be a folk song, a composed piece or the tenor of a polyphonic song. The antiphon Da pacem is also a clearly audible cantus firmus woven into polyphonic textures.

Interview Dirk Snellings Klara 08042008(Dutch)

 <itunes:author>Capilla Flamenca - JC Productions</itunes:author>

Interview with Dirk Snellings by Mark Janssens from Radio Klara. Dirk gives background information about the program "Bellum et Pax".

"Fear the armed man, the call is out to take arms"

Using this slogan, the Roman-Catholic Europe launched a counterattack in 1460 against the advancing Turkish. In this attack the Bourgundian dukes took a leading role.
Because in the late Middle Ages, State and Church were closely linked, the slogan 'L'Homme armé' has also been set to music. The melody of that song repeatedly runs through the ordinary parts of the mass as a red herring.
Almost all the composers of the Bourgundian sphere of influence competed with each other to incorporate this war-song in an ingenious way in their mass. The "Missa L'homme Armé" of Pierre de La Rue can be closely associated with Josquin Desprez regarding the compositorical technicity. As the preferred composer of the Bourgundian Court, Pierre de la Rue shows here by composing proportion canons and all sorts of imitations that his polyphonic skill equals that of Josquin Desprez or Johannes Ockeghem.
Pierre de la Rue transformed this melody with an unparalleled technical craftsmanship into other shapes throughout the various ordinary-parts of the mass. Beside the 'call to arms', a lot of polyphonic motets ask for peace. It was a common practice to ratify a peace treaty with ceremonious and joyful songs in the churches.
In addition to this compilation version of the Missa L'homme armé, Gregorian Chant with its pure single lines invokes a message of peace - Da pacem - in this programme.

Masterclass Polyphony 2008

 <itunes:author>Capilla Flamenca - Musica - JC Productions</itunes:author>

During this masterclass, the emphasis will be on gaining skills and insight in working with polyphony, with Josquin’s two L’homme armé Masses serving as the musical context. The most important task of the musician in polyphony is bringing one’s own musical line in harmony with that of the other musicians. What the musician needs are a listening ear, an open and critical mind, and a feeling for group unity. It is this continuous group dynamic that really brings polyphonic compositions to life. Every member of an ensemble is creatively involved in the development and realization of polyphonic works. The artistic ‘leader’ of the group brings the many ideas together into a rich artistic texture. This allows the composition to shine as it was ‘authentically’ intended.

Using the Missa L’homme armé as the departure point, poly-phonic vocal techniques will be developed and applied. The participants will be trained in modal tuning, rhythmic finesse and complexity, and techniques which develop the rich pyramid of polyphonic sound. Improvisation will also be an important aspect of this masterclass. Improvisation leads to greater insight into the polyphonic compositional process and allows musicians to deal with the notes’ in a more spontaneous and critical way.

12 x 12 (Tierkreis) Live recording

 <itunes:author>Capilla Flamenca - Het Collectief - JC Productions</itunes:author>

12 x 12

Two ensembles originating in Flanders, the Capilla Flamenca and Het Collectief, are joining artistic forces to present a unique performance in the fall of 2007. The music world offers probably no greater contrast between two ensembles, and yet the groups have come up with a thematic common denominator: the zodiac.

Het Collectief discovered Tierkeis by Karlheinz Stockhausen, a work inspired by signs of the zodiac and consisting of twelve short, concentrated melodies, supported by simple chords.

The link with Capilla Flamenca's celebrated Zodiac programme was there for the making. In this performance, a broad selection from the Ars Nova repertoire balances the twentieth-century repertoire of Het Collectief. In the fourteenth century, the Ars Nova emerged from France to sweep through Europe. This new art (of living) broke with the stiff and ponderous ideas from the past (Ars Antiqua).
The shape of Capilla Flamenca's Zodiac programme was originally inspired by the splendid depictions of the signs of the zodiac that Duke Jean de Berry ordered from the Brothers Limburg: in these paintings the twelve months of the year and the changing seasons are identified with the twelve signs of the zodiac. In this sense, this work of art is an evocation of the inner temperaments of fourteenth-century man, whose life was to a large degree determined by the quixotic laws of nature.

In 12 x 12, the two ensembles truly invade each other's territory with New Art, Ars Nova, resulting in a fascinating historical bridge between highly divergent music styles, genres and periods. The whole becomes a surprising mix of vocal, instrumental, old and new music performed by twelve singers and musicians.

Who killed Cock Robin? (English) Work in Progress...

 <itunes:author>Capilla Flamenca - JC Productions</itunes:author>

Who killed Cock Robin? is a bizarre and poetic journey of initiation, children's fantasy and dark nightmare. The performance of Joanna Dudley and Rufus Didwiszus reveals scenes of dark beauty and leads the audience into a surreal world of ritual and ceremony, to the accompaniment of Ars Nova music, a 14th century genre of vocal music, masterfully adapted by the renowned vocal and instrumental ensemble Capilla Flamenca.

This is the story of a fat little boy (Joanna Dudley) who one evening leaves the safety of his home to set out on a journey. On the way he meets six bearded guardians (Capilla Flamenca). Drawn to these men, the boy entrusts himself to the care of this strict community. A journey of transformation begins, accompanied by expressive singing and the video compositions of Swiss artist Samuel Dématraz, whose works conjure up an atmosphere of disquieting, dark beauty.

Seductive and powerful, Who killed Cock Robin? explores traditional narratives, alternating between animism, transitional rites and fantasy, and in doing so continually blurs the border between reality and fiction. Who killed Cock Robin? is the first joint production between Joanna Dudley, Rufus Didwiszus and Capilla Flamenca since the great success of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's Foi.

Produced by Binder + Partner Berlin, Adolphe Binder, (http://www.bp-berlin.com).

Foi, interview with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (French)

 <itunes:author>Capilla Flamenca - JC Productions</itunes:author>

Interview by the RTBF with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui produced his first choregraphy 'Rien de Rien' in 2000, as a member of the artistic core group of Alain Platel's ensemble 'Les Ballets C. de la B.', in collaboration with Roel Dieltiens. They hit the bulls-eye. In 'Foi' this Antwerp Fleming of Moroccan descent, continues the dialogue between music and dance, now supported by Capilla Flamenca. This music ensemble interprets the music of Fourteenth century Ars nova period - typified by polyphony and very complex rhythmics -, combined with the oral traditions of rural songs. Point of departure of 'Foi' is the question of the impact of faith, tradition and heritage. The performance draws on the improvisational talents of eighteen dancers, singers and musicians to develop the story. They all come from different cultural backgrounds. In musical terms, 'Foi' evolves from a deep, earthy sound into one of a transparent, ethereal quality of typical Eastern serenity. The images that the dancers conjure up are on the other hand, almost 'orphic' in character, presenting not the Greek underworld, but drawing on the collective experience of the world in its most contemporary and current affliction.

<itunes:summary>Interview by the RTBF with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui
