Then take this simple quiz devised by leading travel agents The Cruise Line.

The official word is that works from a "complex behavioural database" to find the perfect match. Forget all that jargon, and just choose which pictures best suit your maritime mood and let the system do the rest.

It worked pretty well for me, coming up with three choices that I would consider perfect for my requirements, although possibly not in my preferred 1-2-3 order.

Jos Dewing, Managing Director of The Cruise Line said, "This quiz is not only fun and engaging, but it's pretty useful too. We get many prospective luxury cruise passengers coming to The Cruise Line seeking a new luxury experience but unsure which operator is right for them.

"As we represent more than 20 cruise companies that may suit their needs, this is a useful tool for narrowing down the search. The quiz is accurate owing to its complex database which has been designed objectively by true experts in the field."

And anyone who has ever travelled on a ship knows that there are no bigger or more enthusiastic quiz enthusiasts than cruise passengers.

The woman, an American in her 60s, was taking part in an excursion from the 100-passenger Sea Spirit, operated by Quark Expeditions, when the incident happened yesterday.

She was one of 12 being carried in a Zodiac vessel which was sightseeing near the 14th of July Glacier just outside the settlement of Longyearbyen, the administrative centre of the Svalbard archipelago.

All the passengers on board were swept into the icy Arctic water when the boat was struck by a wave. Local reports say rescue authorities received a call for help about midday yesterday (Monday).

Emergency crews were told a woman had been injured and was being examined by the cruise ship's doctor. A rescue helicopter with a doctor on board was dispatched from the island of Spitsbergen, but the woman had died before it reached the ship.

Two other passengers who suffered minor injuries are not critically injured and are receiving medical treatment in Longyearbyen, according to a statement from Quark Expeditions.

The all-suite ship, which carries 120 passengers and 64 crew, is currently in Ny Alesund. It has undergone investigation by the local authorities and has been cleared to continue with its expedition.

Svalbard's deputy governor, Lars Erik Alfheim, told local newspaper Svalbardposten that the cause of the woman's death was not yet clear. Witnesses said the boat was "tossed around" after being hit by a large wave. All the passengers were thrown into the water and swept ashore.

Sea Spirit left Longyearbyen on Friday for an 11-day Spitsbergen Explorer cruise with fares from £3,200 per person. Five of the passengers on board are from Britain.

Quark's website promises opportunities to view wildlife including polar bears, walrus and reindeer. Instead of a fixed itinerary, the expedition staff on board decide the route according to weather and sea conditions.

The lawsuit, against UK-based BAE Systems, claims that defective mooring equipment in its shipyard in Mobile, Alabama, failed to hold Carnival Triumph when the ship was hit by winds of up to 66 mph.

The ship was towed into Mobile from the Gulf of Mexico in February, after an engine room fire left it crippled and without power.

After disembarking 4,200 passengers, the 101,000-ton vessel was taken to BAE's yard for repairs. During the storm, on April 3, it was set adrift on the Mobile River for several hours, during which it collided with a US Army dredger which was also undergoing repairs.

None of the 600 crew on board Triumph was injured, but two security men who had been in a shed on the quayside were blown into the water. One drowned, and his widow has issued a claim against Carnival.

The claim from Carnival seeks to establish that it was not responsible for damages, and also alleges the incident has cost the company more than $12 million.

The lawsuit maintains that Triumph was "completely dependent on shore power and other services provided by BAE" because its generators were not functional.

"At about 1:30 pm, during a rainstorm, four of the bollards on Pier K to which the mooring lines of the Triumph were tied failed and broke free from the pier, three at the aft end and one at the forward end. This in turn placed increased load on the remaining mooring lines and compromised the integrity of the entire mooring arrangement, causing the Triumph to break free from the pier," the complaint states.

In addition, the suit claims failure of BAE's bollards, or metal posts to which mooring lines are attached, is directly responsible for Triumph's unscheduled departure as well as breakage of the supply lines, including the power supply.

"Due to the incomplete status of the repairs at the time of the bollard failures, the Triumph was unable to use its propulsions, thrusters or other shipboard systems to attempt to control the vessel."

The suit also alleges both the bollards and their fasteners were "outdated, severely deteriorated, defective and unsuitable for mooring the Triumph" and that BAE was aware of Pier K's shortcomings prior to the vessel's arrival in February.

Following the repairs, Triumph returned to service on June 13, from her home port of Galveston, Texas. A total of $115 million was spent on repairs and upgrades to the 14-year-old vessel.

It replaces the Todd English speciality restaurant on Deck 2, just off the Grand Lobby. How long now before Victoria's Chart Room bar is replaced with a Britannia Club restaurant like the one which has been a hit on Elizabeth?

Todd English is an American celebrity chef - he opened his first Olives restaurant in Boston in 1989 and it was followed by one in Bellagios, Las Vegas and another in New York's Union Square.

He has another eponymous restaurant on board Queen Mary 2; Cunard does not appear to have any plans to replace this in the near future.

Victoria's 100-seat Verandah opened to passengers for the first time on the ship's 15-night cruise to the Baltic which ended at the weekend.

The menu has been created by Michelin-starred Jean Marie Zimmermann who is Cunard's global culinary ambassador.

One highlight is carpaccio of smoked beef with marinated aubergine, quail's egg and truffle mayonnaise, which is served under a glass cloche filled with scented smoke.

There is a choice of 11 main courses including beef and lobster flambéed with Cognac and truffle with Parmesan fries - the most popular dish to date - and baked rack of lamb in pastry with morels and Madeira (above).

There are additional a la carte charges for Verandah dishes, from $5 to $12 at lunch and $6 to $18 for dinner. The dégustation (tasting) menu at dinner is $35

Managing director Peter Shanks said: "The passenger feedback we have received for both lunch and dinner in these first days of the Verandah's operation has been very positive."

More British holidaymakers than ever before are thinking of taking a cruise, according to the results of a YouGov survey published today.

The prospect of waking up in a different destination each morning led a third of travellers questioned to say they would be tempted by a cruise if the cost was comparable to an all-inclusive resort on land.

Astonishingly, despite the advertising bombardments on TV, in newspapers, and online, 40 per cent of the people questioned by YouGov thought cruises were too expensive, especially with the added cost of drinks and gratuities.

Where have these people been hiding? How can they not have noticed that cruise fares have never been as low as they are this summer, with many deals for less than £50 per day - with all meals and entertainment included.

It's clear that perceptions are slow to change. 46 per cent thought that a cruise was for "older people" and - despite attractions such as water parks and extensive kids' clubs - almost a third said it was a holiday for couples without children.

The Caribbean is the destination of choice for most of the 2,000 adults questioned, with just over a fifth putting it top of their list. Next came the South Pacific and Australia (15 per cent) and the Mediterranean (11 per cent).

In contrast to the results of a recent Harris Poll carried out in America, which concluded that the image of cruising had taken a severe knock following the Costa Concordia tragedy and a number of recent ship-board fires, the British respondents were undeterred by adverse publicity.

I am driven to assume that the eight per cent who said they were unaware of any media coverage of cruise holidays must be among those who have not seen the ads for bargain-basement fares.

The survey was commissioned by travel technology firm Amadeus, whose UK marketing director, Rob Sinclair-Barnes, said: "These findings show there are enormous opportunities to sell cruises.

"However, there is still a perception that cruise holidays are for the older traveller, and that they're expensive - despite sustained efforts by the industry to broaden its appeal to a younger clientele, where value for money is a key criteria."

It was made to sound like an even greater privilege when the Master of Royal Princess, Captain Tony Draper, addressed her with the words: "Your Royal Highness, would you do us the great honour of naming MY ship."

Kate stepped forward, wearing a striking black and white Dalmatian-print coat, her hat firmly in place despite the near gale-force winds buffeting the Southampton quayside.

She accepted a ceremonial pair of scissors presented on a blue cushion by Izzie and Charlie Rowbotham, whose brother was cared for in a children's hospice supported by the Duchess before he died of cancer at the age of 21 months.

Then she climbed six steps to a platform to utter the words; "I name this ship Royal Princess. May God bless her and all who sail in her," before cutting a blue rope tethering a 15-litre Nebuchadnezzar of Moët & Chandon Champagne. The £1,250 bottle smashed into the ship's side and burst as if it had been shot from a cannon.

Confetti exploded into the air over the heads of guests - including Sir Bruce Forsyth, Christopher Biggins and Liz McClarnon - huddled in a temporary grandstand; West End singer Kerry Ellis launched into the National Anthem, with her microphone not working, and Kate was whisked away for a quick tour of the ship.

She told members of crew, lined up to greet her in the gold and marble central Piazza, that it was her first visit to a cruise ship.

She was taken to the bridge of the 3,600-passenger vessel where she pressed a button to sound the ship's horn. As a long low sound reverberated around the dock, she laughed and said: "I was expecting something high pitched."

Before leaving the bridge she looked around her and said: "It feels very stable, doesn't feel like you're on board at all."

Earlier in the day, Princess Cruises UK director Paul Ludlow spoke of the company's pride at having Kate on board. "Of all the people who could be considered as potential godmothers, she must be at the very top of the list," he said.

And introducing her on stage, company president Alan Buckelew made reference to the American line's links to the heritage of Britain's P&O before saying: "To welcome Royal Princess into our fleet, we are incredibly honoured that Her Royal Highness will officially name the ship today, marking the start of its many journeys through the world's oceans and to fascinating shores.

"The naming of a ship is a tradition thousands of years old. The ritual marks the birth of a vessel, and asks for a blessing of good fortune and safety for the ship, its crew, and passengers.

"Perhaps the most important element of the naming tradition is the godmother selected to christen a ship. A godmother is the figurative patron of the ship through its entire life, and symbolises the spirit of the vessel.

"We can think of no more fitting godmother for our magnificent new ship. Her Royal Highness is an inspiring ambassador for Britain, and she is admired around the world for her style and grace, and for her compassion for others."

Kate flew from London by helicopter for her final solo public engagement before taking maternity leave. She is expected to join other members of the Royal Family at Trooping the Colour in London on Saturday, and her first baby is due on July 13. Princess Diana named an earlier ship called Royal Princess in 1984. And in October 2010 Her Majesty The Queen christened Cunard's Queen Elizabeth at exactly same spot - within yards of the quay from where Titanic departed on her ill-fated maiden voyage in 1912.

Or perhaps you had a two-nighter from to Zeebrugge in mind - packed with stags and hens who staggered off the gangway in Southampton or Tilbury bleary-eyed and nursing sore heads.

Well think again. Luxury cruise operator Crystal is taking the concept to a whole new level.

It has put together a selection of excursions throughout Europe this summer to satisfy the thirstiest throats and the keenest palates. Passengers from Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony will be able to sip or swill their way through the Mediterranean, Baltic and northern Europe until December, learning about the history and culture behind iconic drinks along the way.

Examples of tasting and crafting excursions include:

• Arctic beer at the oldest pub in Tromsø.
• Fresh cider and apple brandy from the centuries-old "Orchard of Norway" area near Eidfjord.
• Vodka in Honningsvâg, Lofoten and Stockholm ice bars.
• 16th-century Bénédictine herbal liqueur at a palace near Honfleur.
• Cafés offering rum and honey poncha near Madeira, limoncello in Sorrento and soumada in Mykonos.
• Famous distilleries such Bushmills in County Antrim, Hennessy in Cognac and the Heineken brewery in Amsterdam.
• Traditional tea at an 18th century estate near Belfast and a Russian tea plantation near the Winter Olympics venue at Sochi.
• Highland, Lowland, Speyside and Island whiskies at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society near Edinburgh.

Wine-related outings are also in plentiful supply, with insight into:

• Unconventional winemaking, seen through a Mykonos grower who plays classical music to his wines, and a modern reserve winemaker near Bilbao whose cellar integrates into the landscape.
• Medoc Classified Great Growth Château estates, from the man who literally wrote the book on Bordeaux wines.
• Wine history, including a 400-year-old Maltese wine cellar, Mallorca's oldest winery and the birthplace of French wine, Nice.
• One of the most celebrated limited private label white wines at a Corfu nobleman's private estate.
• International wine distribution via a leading Bordeaux wine trader.
• Viticultural geography at wineries in St-Tropez where south-facing slopes and microclimate make it ideal for certain vintages, in Constantza where Champagne-like land and weather have helped win more than 130 international wine gold medals, and Arrecife where the volcanic soil is inhospitable for crops yet extraordinary for grapevines.

"Drinks such as local wine, spirits, beer and teas embody the aromas and tastes of destinations," says Philip Ordever, Vice President of International Sales and Marketing. "These excursions offer yet another way to gain understanding of unique European cultures and traditions."

Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony sail throughout Europe between now and December on voyages ranging from five nights to month-long extended holiday combo cruises. All-inclusive European fly/cruise fares start from £1,730 per person based on a five night cruise from Lisbon to Bordeaux departing August 22 if booked by June 28.

Extraordinary culinary experiences are a hallmark of every Crystal cruise. Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity's extensive, innovative choices include the ultra-luxury line's coveted cheese and wine cellars, overseen by onboard, certified sommeliers; all-inclusive, chef-like cocktails served by certified mixologists; and gourmet dining options at every meal, whether in the Crystal Dining Room, at afternoon tea, or in the speciality restaurants - Nobu Matsuhisa's Silk Road or Piero Selvaggio's Prego.

Three cruises have now been cancelled because of the problem, but it is expected the ship will be back in service for a summer charter with Always of Belgium from June 25.

Passengers who were on board during the May 25 Celtic Treasures cruise were brought back to Portsmouth from Ireland when trouble first struck on May 28. The June 2 Heritage of the British Isles cruise was also cancelled, but until today it had been hoped a 15-day Land of the Midnight Sun cruise departing from Portsmouth tomorrow (June 11) could go ahead.

However, it has now been cancelled. Operator Voyages of Discovery is contacting all passengers, who will receive a full refund and the option to take either £50 in casho or a 140 per cent credit towards another booking on Voyager or on MV Minerva that is operated by sister company Swan Hellenic.

VoD says it "apologises to all passengers for these unusual and unforeseen circumstances which have arisen as a result of events outside their control."

The ship, originally built as Crown Monarch in 1990, sailed as Alexander von Humboldt until it was re-launched as Voyager last December after a lengthy refit.
Passengers and crew on Disney Cruise Line's four ships have raised $14,000 for the Make-A-Wish charity with a series of rubber duck races in the ships' pools and watercoasters.

The events marked the 30th anniversary of the Disney VoluntEARS programme, which gives opportunities for cast and crewmembers to donate their time to worthy causes around the world.

On the ships, thousands of yellow rubber ducks were decorated and personalized before taking part in the races and on the newer Disney Dream and Fantasy, they were raced through the AquaDuck watercoasters.

All funds raised from the duck sales have been donated to Make-A-Wish International, which grants wishes for children facing life-threatening medical conditions. Since the first-ever official wish experience 32 years ago, Disney has helped grant more than 81,000 wishes globally and is involved in nearly 50 per cent of the wishes granted each year.

Christiaan Abbott, cruise director aboard the Disney Dream, said: "Having our guests take part in this first-ever AquaDucky Derby has definitely made it especially unique. You can feel the excitement in the air. The entire shipboard community of guests and crew came together to have fun for a great cause, and the reaction from the crowd has been incredible."

Royal Princess was greeted by rain and a musical salute as actor, director and writer Simon Callow conducted the Southampton University Brass Band in a serenade of God Save The Queen. The ship replied with its own musical horn, playing the opening notes of the theme song from the TV's The Love Boat.

Paul Ludlow, Princess Cruises UK director, said: "A musical welcome was the perfect way to mark the arrival of Royal Princess ahead of the official naming ceremony on Thursday. Even the British weather could not dampen the spirits of the spectators who lined the shore and came out in their boats to greet the ship."

They had hoped to spend seven days seeing the sights along the Danube; instead, record levels of floodwater forced them to spend almost all the time unable to travel anywhere and not even to leave the boat.

The 110-metre long ship Filia Rheni had been chartered exclusively by Titan Travel for a "Danube Waltz" cruise, and after embarking passengers last Friday should have travelled gently to Passau, Bratislava, and Budapest.

High water levels - the result of record rainfall and flooding that has disrupted central Europe and caused a number of deaths - not only prevented the ship from leaving, but also left its landing pontoon unusable.

The only way off, according to spokesman Paul Green, was via a smaller boat, which was impracticable for the majority of the passengers.

"Fortunately," said Green, "there was plenty of food on the boat, and more importantly plenty of wine. One of Titan's directors flew to the vessel to supervise operations and to reassure passengers, who will receive a full refund, or full credit on a future cruise.

"It's difficult to plan for the worst floods in 100 years but in those floods, customers were better off on a luxurious cruise ship with three weeks' supply of food and wine."

Eventually, a replacement pontoon was constructed and floated into place, and the passengers were able to walk safely ashore on Thursday evening. A busy rail line was closed down during the rescue attempt so they could cross it safely. They were accommodated in hotels in Vienna before returning to the UK, most by the flights originally scheduled for their return from Budapest.

Filia Rheni was built in 1999; unusually for river cruise vessels it has a gym and a swimming pool. The ship, operated by the Dutch company Rijfers River Cruises, was due to start another Titan charter today, embarking passengers in Budapest for a 17-night "Grand Voyage to the Black Sea."

It is not yet clear how this cruise will be affected by the floods. A statement on Titan Travel's website advises "If you are due to travel on any of our European river cruise holidays in the coming week, rest assured we will be in contact by telephone if there is any impact on your itinerary - there is no need to call us. We are in constant contact with local partners and are monitoring the situation very closely."

A listing for the vessel appeared on a brokerage website, citing a sale price of €185 million and a delivery date of either September 2013 or April 2014. A footnote added: "Only serious interested parties please." According to the listing, the seller was CA_Marine Co. Ltd, a shipbroker registered in Syria.

The Europa, built in 1999, with capacity for 408 passengers and 280 crew, has consistently been rated the best in the world by Douglas Ward, editor of the Berlitz Guide to Cruise Ships - though it may be overtaken next year by the even more sumptuously-appointed Europa 2.

Hapag-Lloyd told me quite categorically today: "Our Europa is not for sale. We are not selling the ship and we did not commission a broker."

Alexandru Veres, of shipsonsale.com, said: "The post was deleted from our website. It is really hard to filter all the postings that come from our users. Thank you for letting us know."

Meanwhile, Hapag-Lloyd have assured UK travel agents, who sailed on a Europa 2 preview cruise from Southampton last month, that the ship will be prepared to welcome English-speaking guests.

The company operates mainly in the German-speaking market, but is hoping to attract more passengers from the UK and America - perhaps up to 100 per cruise by 2015.

Some agents expressed concern at the lack of English TV channels in the ship's suites, according to trade magazine Travel Weekly, but international sales manager Michael Steffi said: "These are small things that can be solved easily."

The company has also launched a new brochure for its expedition arm, with 11 international itineraries planned for 2014-15 on board Hanseatic and Bremen.

Destinations include Siberia and Vladivostock; the Chukchi Peninsula and Wrangel Island, on the opposite side of the Bering Straits from Alaska; and the North West Passage along the coasts of Greenland and Canada.

At the other end of the world, there will be a selection of voyages to Antarctica, and explorations of the Chilean fjords and the River Amazon.

The number of cruise ship departures form UK ports is expected to increase by three per cent this year, with regional destinations gaining business as well as familiar ports such as Southampton and Dover.

Figures compiled by CruiseBritain also show a rapid growth in the popularity of round-Britain cruises - the number will rise by 12 per cent to 120 departures this year, and is up a remarkable 70 per cent since 2010.

The total number of cruises departing from British shores will be 868, and they include voyages to New England and South America, as well as the more traditional destinations of the Caribbean, Baltic, and the Mediterranean.

Closer to home, the round-Britain cruises take passengers to a diverse selection of British and Irish ports including Falmouth, Guernsey, Tyne, Isles of Scilly, Kirkwall, Liverpool, Milford Haven and to Bristol, the newest CruiseBritain member. Bristol has also seen cruise ship departure turnarounds for the first time for 20 years.

Kate O'Hara, chair of CruiseBritain, said: "The continued strong growth in round-Britain cruises is testament to the diversity of destinations round our island; cruise ships of all sizes can visit a selection of ports within short sailing distances and cruise lines can be confident that passenger expectations will be met."
Even before full details are released about what else will be on board the 4,180-passenger vessel, passengers are clamouring for tickets for its first voyages.

The maiden voyage will be an eight-night Transatlantic crossing to New York, leaving Southampton on November 2 next year. Fares, released this week, start at £999 including the return flight home.

A more typical cruise will be November 23's eight-nighter to the Bahamas, taking in Port Canaveral, Florida (with excursions available to DisneyWorld and Universal Studios in Orlando), Nassau, and Royal Caribbean's private resort of CocoCay - plus four days at sea. Fares from £979 for an inside cabin (cruise-only) and £1,749 for an ocean view (including flights).

For an 11-night Caribbean cruise from Cape Liberty, New Jersey, to Puerto Rico, St Maarten, Martinique, Barbados and St Kitts, with 5 days at sea, fares start at £1,689 including flights.

You can get full details at cruise1st.co.uk

Curious to know more about the ship? Royal Caribbean will be providing a drip-feed of information between now and the launch. Meanwhile, A FAQ list has been leaked online, reassuring followers of the company's ships that Quantum WILL have a Royal Promenade, modeled on those of the Freedom and Oasis-class ships.

Although the dodgem car arena will also be used for roller-skating, the ship will not have an ice rink and the FAQ points out that there are 10 other ships in the fleet with facilities for guests who get more excited by ice under their feet than in their drinks.

There are more details about the North Star observation pod - the capsule on the end of a cherry-picker that looks like it has escaped from the London Eye.

It will carry 13 guests, and there's room on board for a wheelchair. The arm is 41 metres (135 feet) long. There will be no fee for the ride, apart from premium packages at sunrise and sunset, and for private events - a proposal or a wedding, perhaps - during the day. The packages include a pre-flight reception, in-flight Champagne toast, a commemorative certificate and a post-flight brunch or dinner.

Quantum will also feature familiar Royal Caribbean attractions such as a 30-foot rock climbing wall and a FlowRider surf simulator. The top deck will be home to an adults-only solarium, indoor and outdoor pools, and an H2O water park for children.

A wide range of speciality restaurants is promised (more details to come) and the theatre will be home to a top Broadway show, along the lines of Hairspray on Oasis of the Seas and Chicago on Allure.

There's also reassuring news for passengers who do NOT want to watch the sea all day and all night from the "virtual balcony" screens provided for inside cabins; they can be switched off.

DON'T switch off if you want more details of Quantum of the Seas - keep coming back here for more.
