During development the vehicle filters where much more complex but it was decided they where difficult to use, so where scaled back to something much simpler to use. Because of this when Car Arena was released the way in which the filters worked was confusing and, at times, would not allow dealers to filter out car data they are not interested in.

The new version allows dealers to elect to see all Cars and/or Vans or to see individual manufacturer's of Vans / Cars. You may also exclude either Vans or Cars from search results by deselecting all manufacturers for the vehicle type.

The new version of the filter will not take effect until the next time you edit your filter settings. The old method for filtering data will remain in effect until that time.

We also looked into allowing dealers to filter data by vehicle class (4x4, Estate, MPV, etc...) and are considering adding these additional search options at a later date.

Snow, Snow and more snow

One fellow blogger who works for Car Arena recently vented, gently, about the recent snow which has hit East Yorkshire hard. And I have to agree that I've been tempted to sell my car and buy an X3 fitted with tractor wheels as both mine and my partners cars are immobilized.
The problem in the north of England isn't the roads so much but setting off or your destination. The main roads have been gritted and the snow is being kept in check by traffic but the Minor roads are covered in a 2-3 inch slab of ice and parking bays or ten foots have this ice + an extra 2ft of snow. So unless where your car is parked can be dug out in a reasonable amount of time and your destination has been cleared there is little point in driving as your car will get stuck in the snow!

Buying a new Car Next year?

On the 4th January 2011 the UK's standard rate of VAT will rise from 17.5% to 20%. While this will not have a major affect on the price of most used cars the rise will add several hundred pounds to all new cars. However you can avoid paying the extra 2.5% for a new car if you intend on buying it within the first 6 months of 2011.

Business can create a 'tax point' before Jan 4th 2011 but deliver the service / product after the date VAT is increased. All they need do is raise an invoice or accept a payment, so long as you are not paying for the car using a finance package – personal loans can make use of the tax point.

Disappointingly What Car has discovered that of the 30 Dealers it called posing as a customer only 3 where aware of the tax point system, the remainder simply told What Car that the car would have to be paid in full or registered before the 4th

What Car speculate that many dealers may be put off as they may have to pay the VAT due before accepting payment from the customer or simply may not know how the system works.

Regardless, if you do intend on buying a new car then you should attempt to make arrangements before the 4th

Winter Arrives

Snow and ice is expected by the latter part of this week in Britain with overnight temperatures dropping below well below freezing. In Scotland heavy snow is expected and temperatures of -6 Centigrade for the East of England.
As we all know driving in this weather, especially in the mornings before ice on the road has melted, is particularly dangerous and something we only face for a two to three months a year. So here are some reminders and tips for this winter:

Always carry deicer
Its not recommended that you scrape snow and ice off your windscreen and is comparatively expensive to melt the ice using your car's heating. A cheap can of deicer will quickly melt any ice on your windscreen without damaging it or using up your fuel. Some cars have Bottle holders in the boot which a can of deicer fits into snugly

Top up your Screenwash with Antifreeze
Not only does this stop the Screenwash freezing in the reservoir it also helps preventing your jets freezing making clearing ice from the windscreen easier. While heat from the engine usually melts the ice jets quickly the jets themselves can be damaged when they freeze and will not melt until your engine is up to its running temperature.

Take your mobile with you and keep plenty of fuel in the car
While many organizations would advise taking enough equipment to camp in the Arctic we all know in the real world that unless we're driving long distance we're unlikely to get stuck anywhere long enough or remote enough to put our lives in danger and in the worst case you can park the car and use alternative means to get to your destination. However it is a good idea to keep your phone with you so that you can get in contact with people should you need to and use the camera in your phone should there be an accident. Keeping an ample supply of fuel in the car is also advisable as journey times are unpredictable and should you get stuck you can at least use the engine to stay warm.

Avoid Minor Roads where possible
Unless this is your first winter behind the wheel you'll know all to well that any time after the car starts moving you can become a passenger. Gritted roads are often no different from driving on wet roads however the minor roads which are often left to freeze over can leave you with almost no grip at all.

Be Wary of your ABS and Corner Break Assist
If possible turn off electronic driving aids while driving in snow or icy conditions unless they've been designed to work correctly under such conditions. Most ABS systems will activate quickly on ice and reduce your control over the car while extending your stopping distances. Corner Break Assists also have the same effect but may activate during a turn without you pressing the break. Official advice tells us not to use the break when on ice, a tip everyone instinctively ignores when sliding across the road, but is technically correct and will give you more control over the car.

Drive Slowly
Ok, so this message is repeated so often we're all bored of it but if you are turning off a gritted road to a frozen road even at 5 mph you can expect to slide 5-10 meters before you come to a stop or get some control back should things go wrong. So when entering a road which hasn't been gritted expect to loose traction, try to get the car point and traveling in the direction you want to go in before the tyres meet the ice and set the speed you want to turn the corner at before you turn into the road

If you're lucky enough to be escaping the British Isles for a while and plan to be driving overseas remember the winter can be harder and more prolonged on mainland Europe. Reader Awards 2010

What Car? recently published their annual car awards as voted for by their readers. This year they took into account over 30,000 reader reviews from their website and only covers car available to buy as new now but is a good indicator of which cars will be popular in the nearly new and used markets in the future.

The clear winner this year was Skoda, who claimed both Manufacturer of the year and Best Small Family Car of the year for their Octavia. Alfa Romeo claimed best Superminis, the Lotus Elise best Open-tops and the Volkswagen Passat as the best Family cars and compact executive.

The BMW 1 Series claimed the best overall car and the the best Coupes, Ford C-Max being the favoured MPV, The Landrover defender taking the best Crossovers and 4x4s and finally Mercedes-Benz CLS taking the best Luxury and executive cars.

Skoda's cars also ranked in the top 5 for every category they where eligible for. The Superb and Fabia received impressive reviews but did not reach the number of reviews needed to qualify for their category.

Vauxhall, however, will not be as pleased with the results as Skoda. Both the Insigna ranked the worst car of its class, the Zafira coming 3rd worst overall and the 2nd worst manufacturer. Nor will Ford who saw the Focus CC come in as worst overall car and worst Open-top cars.

Both Vauxhall and Ford however where both beaten to the bottom slot though by Saab who rated overall as the worst manufacturer of 2010.

It would seem from this years results that Skoda's and the BMW 1 Series may be highly desirable in the used / Nearly New car market in 2011/12. So if you're considering buying a new car today it may be worth considering these cars if you intend on selling your car while it is still relatively new.

Most of the Cars produced in the UK are exported, over 70% this year but there has been a recent explosion in production of Commercial Vehicles.
Earlier in the year the UK's scrappage scheme is believed to have bolstered the new car market but when it ended in March new car registrations fell heavily and have continued to do so for the rest of this year. Overall it is expected that new car registrations will still be 1.5% better than 2009 but without the scrappage scheme 2010 would have been on par with 2009.
Anyone who has recently bought a new car and though I'll sell my car in 2011 or 2012 is most likely to be pleased with the value of their car as the nearly new car market is expected to be thirsty for these cars. For dealers: if you have agreed to buy a vehicle via Car Arena you can now request that the owner of the vehicle set the vehicle's status to sold by clicking on the "I have bought this vehicle" button on the Valuation detail page.
This will then send an email to the vehicle owner asking them to confirm that he/she has agreed to sell the vehicle to you.
If the owner then confirms the sale Car Arena will mark the car as sold and only you will be able to view the vehicle. Also you will receive an email confirming the transaction and the customers details for your reference.

For car owners you can mark your vehicle as sold by clicking on the link on your log in page.

Also we have also added a new car review section to our site with some information and background on manufacturers.

New Features

A series of new features are being added to the website over the next few weeks which will afford car owners more control over how their car is advertised to our dealers.
The Database starts in May 2008 and contains over 470,000 valuations in total and so is a good sample of the used car market.

Recently we crunched some numbers on this database so we had some material for off page SEO and came up with some predictable but rather surprising results. The average age of a vehicle has increased, as you would expect, from about 4.5 years in 2008 and jumped to 6 years old in 2010. We also found the number of previous owners for a vehicle as reported by the DVLA (with the exception of cars with no previous owners as the data is unreliable) has only decreased by 2% for cars with just 1 or 2 previous owners. However enquiries are up by 10% for vehicles with 3 or more previous owners.

Additionally the Standard Deviation of the vehicle age only grows marginally over the sampled period so the data would suggest that people with new or nearly new cars are holding onto them for longer in 2010 whereas people who own older vehicles are more likely to sell.

The results of our report can be found below along with a graph of the data series
This email, which is sent to member dealers, contains a list of every car submitted within the last two hours which the dealer has not yet made an offer for but may be interested in.

The email contains a list of cars along with key details for the car (such as the vehicles age, Color, Previous owners, Engine size, CO2 rating, etc...). Each entry has a link which will take you directly to the vehicle profile on Car Arena.

If you have not already done so you should login to Car Arena and set the filters in your profile to the manufacturers you are interested in, you may also stop this email from being sent to you by checking "Do not send me new vehicle updates' on your profile page.

Should you have any suggestions, ideas or comments on this feature please feel free to contact the Car Arena team or your account manager.

Smart under fire over fuel economy claims

Recently the BBC program Watchdog investigated Smart regarding the new fortwo Diesel fuel economy claims of 85.6 mpg after a number of drivers had been sent complaints to the program. Smart car owners have found that the claim of 85.6 mpg is almost never seen and in reality they average 50-65 mpg.
So where did the claim of 85.6 mpg come from?

The Smart fortwo Diesel has an emission certification of 85.6 mpg for both EC Urban and EC Extra Urban.
EC Urban (ECE1) and EC Extra Urban (EUDC) are both standardized tests performed on cars sold in the EU. Cars are placed on a rolling road and every car is driven the same way for the same distance and time. The amount of fuel used during these tests gives the EC Urban and Extra Urban ratings, more information here.

So why do Smart owners almost never see the fuel economy found in the test?
Well quite simply because no one will ever drive on the road as it was driven in the test conditions, indeed it is likely that the car itself may have been deliberately designed to perform well in the test. The EC economy ratings are really only good for comparing one car against another and should not be taken as an estimate of how the car will perform on the road.
You can never expect to drive on the road in the same conditions and in the same way the car was driven under the test. Your cars fuel economy is affected by tire pressures, weight, weather conditions, driving style, the age or the car, its temperature, the type of fuel used, ...
However, overall the EC Urban and Extra Urban are often a good way to compare fuel economy. Even if the Smart fortwo Diesel was designed to excel in the test it is still likely to give better fuel economy than a 2l Diesel Peugeot 307 which has an EC Urban and Extra Urban rating of 36.7 mpg & 55.4 mpg.

Dealer Directory Added to Car Arena

The Car Arena team has been busy out and about finding all the dealers across the country and recruiting them onto the Car Arena website. The number of dealers making bids for cars on the site is slowly starting to grow but we also decided that it would be useful for visitors to our site if they could browse through the lists of dealers we have discovered.
The dealer directory can be found by going to http://www.cararena.co.uk/locations/
There are over 4,000 dealers listed at the moment - our team is slowly making their way through the list inviting dealers to the site.
If you are a car dealer who is listed in our directory and wish to amend any details please contact us via the car arena website and we'll make the changes for you. All of the links are clean - there are no 'nofollow' links to your site so hopefully it'll give you a slight boost with your online efforts.

New Car Arena Design

We've just finished the first part of a major update to the Car Arena website!
The visual design on the entire website has been overhauled (not even the logo survived!) in favour of a much cleaner and less cluttered look. Flash animations to introduce car owners to the site have been included and tabbed dialogs for easy access to each section of the site.
Underneath the hood the code which runs the site has also been overhauled.
Car Owners only need their registration to start a valuation, a referrer program has been added to the site, valuations no longer badger car owners for images and a number of updates for the dealer interface to make navigating the website easier.

OFT Launches campaign to alert second hand car buyers of their rights

In January to June 2010 complaints against second hand car dealers rose nearly 20% to 38,000 complaints regarding used cars bought from dealers in the UK. Complaints against second hand dealers are the most common complaint made to the OFT via Consumer Direct.

The OFT found, in a study, that as many as 30% of car buyers who had contacted a dealer regarding a fault found in the first 3 months of ownership where told the dealer was not obliged to correct the fault leaving the motorist to pay for the work themselves. Often faults found within the first three months of ownership indicate the car was not of 'satisfactory quality' when it was sold and so the dealer's responsibility to correct.

The OFT advises anyone looking to buy a used car should ask for information about the vehicles mechanical history, mileage checks, previous owners, service history and any modifications made to the car in writing before considering buying. More information can be found here.

This September should see a surge in used car sales due to the number plate change to '60'. Instead of relying on a dealers part exchange quote you should also see what other dealers would offer for your car.

Preparing your car for a private sale

Just by preparing your car properly can add hundreds of pounds to your vehicle's value;
Use a good-quality car shampoo to clean off any 'road grime'. Work from the roof down, rinse off well, and dry with a chamois leather.

Stone chips are unsightly and can rust if not attended to. Repair them with a touch-up stick. These aren't expensive, and with a little patience, you can dramatically improve your car's appearance.

Missing wheel trims or badges are unslightly to used buyers, so make sure you buy replacements. Breaker's yards offer a cheap source of parts.

Wheels covered in brake dust look awful. On alloys, if it's particularly stubborn, buy an alloy wheel cleaner and treat them. If you've got wheel trims, consider replacing them.
A good polish will create that 'new car' shine that so many used buyers are looking for. Don't worry if paint residue appears on the cloth; this is just a layer of 'dead paint' you're removing - there'll still be plenty left on the car!
Cleaning the interior requires a little more hard work. Start with the vacuum and treat carpets, seats, dusty crevices, and even the dashboard itself.

Dashboards should be cleaned with a 'low-gloss' dashboard cleaner; don't use household polish, as it'll give a cheap appearance.

Windows should be cleaned after the dashboard, to make sure you don't spoil your hard work. Use a glass cleaner or damp chamois leather.

Replace any non-standard parts, such as racy gear knobs or alloy pedal covers. They won't impress buyers, who'll think your car has been thrashed. Standard is always best.

Avoid dousing the car in air freshener, unless you have smoked in it - in which case, buy an odour neutraliser. Spray the ashtray too, after giving it a good clean.

Lift tatty old mats out; the clean carpets underneath will look much more attractive.
Buyers love looking under the bonnet, even if they haven't got a clue what they're looking for. You should therefore make sure they like what they see.

Tidy up generally; attach alarm wiring correctly, clean out leaves from air intakes, and generally make the engine bay appear cared-for.

Oil changes are cheap, and clean oil looks far better than sludgy treacle. Make sure the oil level is correct too.
Fill all water and coolant bottles up, maybe using a sweet-smelling windscreen washer?

Finally, steam-cleaning is much-loved by car dealers, but don't go overboard, particularly with older cars as it can sometimes damage fragile parts or connections.

Coming up: New look and style

We're currently working on a make over of the Car Arena website.
The visual design and navigation of the website is being overhauled to be more user friendly and less cluttered than the current version. We're aiming to make the page content visible without having to scroll down past all the necessary forms & links and we're also slimming down the initial valuation form to only require your car's registration mark.
Hopefully the new style of the website will be sent live sometime next week with a bunch of fixes and improvements to the valuation form.

In the mean time we've also uploaded a car dealer directory to the car arena website with links to over 4,000 car dealers in the UK! You can view the directory by going visiting:

Once upon a time, if you had a car to sell, your first port of call would be the local gazette or maybe a national magazine such at a push.
Nothing wrong with that, even if those classified ads were (and still are) on the pricey side! But, in terms of car selling, the internet is now the dominant force with latest estimates suggesting that up to 73% of people now search and sell cars online.
It is that enormous potential exposure your car would receive which is the patently obvious benefit of selling your car 'online'!
But, placing a car advert online is also cheaper than an equivalent printed advert in a magazine or newspaper and the beauty of it is, searching for a particular car is much easier online.
A potential buyer searching for your car online can simply enter the make, model, and approximate age or price of the car, and be given a specifically relevant list of matching adverts instantly. Contrast that with finding the right car in a magazine which can involve countless, often futile, hours of flicking through pages!

An online advert also means that you are much less restricted for space compared to newspapers or magazines where space is an expensive premium. What's more, most newspapers or magazines will charge you by the word, whereas this isn't the case with online adverts.

The fact that there are very few restrictions on the number of words you can use, or on the size of any photo(s), when you place an online advert all helps the the seller to showcase their asset in a much more positive light.
So, in conclusion, online adverts are cheaper, less restrictive, and offer much more exposure than the printed alternatives.

Buying a used car - general advice

Buying a used car can be risky, however, follow these general tips and you won't go far wrong.

Do your homework:

Check the price carefully and compare similar cars in classifieds ads so you know as much as you can about the value of different cars to avoid being overcharged.

Research the seller if possible. If you're buying from a dealer, make sure they are registered traders.

Handle with care:

Always be wary of anything that seems 'too good to be true' or has a very low mileage for its age.

Ask about the car's service history:

Check all documentation provided, including current and previous MOT certificates.

Never view a car in the rain, in poor light or at night.

Water can obscure scratches, dents and other problems., while you won't be able to examine the condition of the car effectively in the dark. Make sure you can see the vehicle clearly and from all angles.

Insist on seeing the V5 vehicle registration document:

Check the name of the present keeper is the seller the registered keeper? if not, why are they selling it for someone else?

Check the seller has a current MOT certificate and certificate of insurance:

If the car is three years old or more, make sure there's a continuous series of annual MOT certificates. See if the mileage on these certificates agrees with the service records.

Check the service record:

Ensure that the cam belt has been replaced according to the manufacturer's recommended intervals.

Test-drive the car before committing yourself:

It's the only way to assess whether the car meets all your needs. Then, as time goes on, and we grow so tired of the car that it's only the mechanic's bill that stops you giving it a 'motivational nudge' with your right foot!
We all grow tired of our cars but if its not heading for the scrap yard selling it can drive the best of us to distraction.

However you plan to sell your car Car Arena can help.

Weather you plan to sell the car privately, part exchange it or sell it online the bottom line is you need to know the market value of the car to be sure you're getting offers for its real value or at least the price you need to set when selling it privately.
Now the dealers probably won't tell you what a car 'books at' and even if they did you'd be very lucky to sell it for that value but the car arena can give you many valuations for your car from dealers for free.

What you may not know is that virtually all dealers base the price of their vehicles, both buying and selling, on price guides set by just a few organizations, also the prices from each of these organizations (as you would expect) are not wildly different from one another. So when a dealer quotes you a price for the car he's probably not going to be too far off what the dealership down the road will offer you, it all depends on how interested they are in your car.

Car arena can't tell you the booking price of a car but what you will get its lots of offers from lots of different dealers, which will give you an idea of the true value of the car.
If you get just 20 offers back for around £4,500 its a safe bet that amount is the market value of the car wherever you plan to sell it. Which should help as if someone where to offer you £6,000 no questions asked you would have to ask yourself why? Perhaps you are just lucky and the car buyer needs your Make / Model of car? Or perhaps they're up to something else altogether.
Either way Car Arena has given you 20 offers already, which you could sell to if things aren't going to plan, and you also know pretty much what the car is actually worth.

Using the Car Arena

In order for the dealers connected to Car Arena to buy your car a small amount of information is needed. Here we'll try to explain what and why is needed to sell your car via Car Arena:

First we need your Registration and Mileage - these two allows us to identify the vehicle, if the DVLA information is correct, and generate a 'book price' for the car. This is the starting price a dealer would be looking for when trying to give you a part-ex price for your car. Usually the dealers use CAP and/or the Glasses guide.

Next we ask for a little more information - Vehicle condition, finance status, type of usage, etc...
This information is needed for the dealers to generate an 'underwrited value' - i.e. a value they can offer you for the car that is gurantteed if the information you supplied is correct.

Our next step is to ask you for any recent photographs you may have of the car, however this section is optional and can be skipped. We decided to add this section as it will help dealers give an accurate value for the car and in some cases may allow them to bid higher for the car.

The final step is to provide the car arena with your contact details. As we're asking dealers to value your car we can't just generate an instant value. We have to wait until the car dealers themselves log onto the system and value the cars they are interested in.
Dealers have to provide a value for your vehicle, which is then emailed to you, and then they will be give more detailed information should they wish to follow up the leed.

At any time after posting your car onto Car Arena though you can stop any new dealers seeing your vehicle details or remove the car from the system altogether via the valuation logon.

Development Update

While the backend work is ongoing to make life easier for the dealers we've also been doing some SEO work to get the car arena website listed in the correct search engine result pages.
And we've been keeping an eye on how google reacts to the content. We found that we'd hammered the keywords like 'Sell my car' and 'Buy my car' so hard in the content that google saw it as spam! So we've mixed the keywords up a little to capture a broader range of key phrases.

On the business side of things Car Arena has whipped up quite a bit of interest from dealers, there are already a hand full of them fully registered with the current system just waiting for the valuations to start pouring through when the advertising is switched on.
So all seems to be going well so far, next week our focus will be finishing some of the outstanding tools for the dealers, more SEO work and preparing for 'launch' sometime in September when the advertising is switched on.

New portal for selling your car online

Car Arena is a new unique portal designed to help sell your car online.

The Car Arena website is a unique way to sell your car online. Unlike other sites of its type the Car Arena does not just send your vehicle details to one dealer for them to make an offer but to all registered dealers across the UK.
Any car added to the system could receive potentially hundreds if not thousands of offers for the vehicle in just a few hours of posting details on the site.

The website charges its registered dealers for the opportunity to bid on cars so vehicle owners can submit a car on the website for free, with no hidden costs and are not obligated to accept any offer. This way anyone who is thinking how can I sell my car quickly? Has nothing to loose by submitting their vehicle details to the portal and dealers have access to a large, much needed, resource of cars.
