Mr. David Ellyard is a science communicator whose knowledge of science and technology is both broad and deep. He understands what the scientists are saying and turns their jargon into easily accessible explanations and images for audiences of any age and background. With his help, they soon discover that what the scientists are telling us can be very important to our everyday lives and to the future of the planet.

David is available as a keynote speaker for any gathering with an emphasis on science and technology and their impacts for the environment, the economy and wider society.

Every day the media reports stories in which science and technology play a very important role. There are vital environmental issues such as nuclear power or genetically modified organisms, medical matters such as the threat posed by bacteria resistant to antibiotics, technological marvels such as stunning new ways to deal with information.

David’s focus is science technology and environment, with a particular interest in the whole climate change debate. He is greatly concerned with climate change and the threat that it poses to our way of life. David believes that this message is not getting through to people so they are not convinced that significant action such as controlling the emission of greenhouse gases is actually necessary. David is well equipped to address their concerns and answer their questions.

David not only works with audiences, including running workshops, to help them understand what the scientists are saying and why it is relevant to them, but he can also work with scientists to help them become better communicators.

David has been around science and technology all his working life: as a researcher, studying cosmic rays in Antarctica; as a teacher in schools and universities; as a presenter of programmes on radio and television such as Quantum and Skywatch; as the prize-winning author of more than 15 popular science books covering astronomy, weather and climate and the history of science and invention; and as a government policy adviser, helping businesses to make the most of the power of innovation.

His most recent book Who Discovered What When (New Holland Press) won the 2004 Eureka Awards Science Book Prize and edition of his “StarWatch StarWheel” which has been in print for nearly 20 years and sold 100 000 copies.

After university study in physics and mathematics, David spent a year researching cosmic rays at Mawson Base inAntarcticaas a member of the 1966 ANARE (Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition).

One of Australia’s most popular and respected political leaders, the Honourable Bob Carr made his political reputation through public speaking. “There is no doubt Carr is a master orator,” according to Simon Benson, political correspondent of The Daily Telegraph.

“Carr is a smart speaker, a colorful orator with a carefully trained voice,” wrote Gerard Noonan of The Sydney Morning Herald. Dominating the floor of the rough house New South Wales Parliament known as the “bear pit” or giving a highly acclaimed speech of welcome to Margaret Thatcher in 1988, Bob Carr has spoken about far more than the narrow political agenda. His annual addresses at Australia Day lunches or at Anzac commemorations were widely appreciated.

Some of the other subjects he has spoken on includes lessons from Leadership: an Australian looks at the careers of Lincoln and FDR, The Australia of 1942 and the fall of Singapore, The 10 Decisions Australia got Right, The Case for Medical Research, The Roman Empire and its Lessons for Us and Imagining Catastrophe: greenhouse, terrorism and proliferation.

In 2005, he retired from politics after ten years as Premier of the State of New South Wales, Australia’s wealthiest and most populous state. Entering politics in 1983, Bob became leader of the Australian Labor Party in New South Wales in 1988 and led it to electoral victory in 1995. He led the party to two further landslide victories in 1999 and 2003, and retired undefeated in August 2005.

Thoughtlines: Reflections of a public man by Bob Carr

“Only Carr has made that rare triumphant farewell to politics,” said The Bulletin,” From the top and at his choosing. “Bob’s interests and priorities ranged over conservation, literacy, tort law reform, medical research, the arts and economic development.

His biggest achievements in office include hosting the most successful Olympic Games ever, achieving highest-ever levels of literacy among school students, declaring 350 new national parks and enacting tough new greenhouse benchmarks.

Bob received the World Conservation Union International Parks Merit Award from International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 1998. He received a Fulbright Distinguished Fellow Award in 1999 for a significant contribution to Australian-American relations. In 2004 he served as a member of Tony Blair’s International Climate Change Taskforce (ICCT).

Bob Carr is the author of three books, Thoughtlines: Reflections of a Public Man (2002), What Australia Means To Me (2003) and most recently My Reading Life (2008). He is also the subject of two biographies.

In recent years, Bob Carr has forged a reputation as a leading speaker in the corporate sector. With his wealth of experience and considerable knowledge, he communicates insights that are invaluable to any organization, particularly given the hugely competitive nature of today business climate.

He is the Founder and Managing Director of the Australian advocacy organization ‘Do Something!’ and was the author of the highly successful business book ‘Sustainable Growth’. In June 1991, he founded Planet Ark in partnership with his close friend Pat Cash.

In 1989, Jon also founded Rock Aid Armenia. In addition to being a social entrepreneur, Jon is an accomplished keynote speaker who has given hundreds of speeches in Australia and overseas. As one of Australia’s most influential environmentalists, Mr. Dee has taught millions of Australians that they have the ability to effect real and positive change in their daily lives.

Jon initiated the lobbying campaign that led to Australia’s three year phase out of incandescent light globes – a move that is saving Australians hundreds of millions of dollars. Jon’s role in the phase-out was acknowledged by then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in a speech on January 24, 2010. Australia’s globe phase-out ban has become an international role model that is now being copied by other countries.

In 2010-2011, Mr. Dee began voluntary ban on phosphates in laundry detergents. Before leaving Planet Ark to start Do Something! Jon headed up the organization for fifteen years, turning the organization into an Australian household name as well as a force for positive change. And Jon initiated the organization’s flagship initiative called “Do Something Near You”, (DoSomethingNearYou.com.au).

Jon has been the main driving force behind the highly successful media campaign to phase-out Australia’s usage of plastic bags. Jon organized the ban on plastic bags in Coles Bay. Over time, the campaign led to the South Australian Government ban on plastic bags for which Jon was the main spokesperson on the day of the ban’s implementation. He also successfully campaigned for the introduction of natural gas buses. In 2010, Jon co-organized the campaign to stop the NSW Government cutting the solar power tariff by a third.

His recent ‘Sustainable Growth’ book has become the definitive sustainability and efficiency guidebook for Australian business. Over the last two years, Jon has undertaken 160 speeches in schools, communities and boardrooms all over Australia. In 2008, Jon presented the ‘Tipping Point’ TV series on The Weather Channel. Broadcast on the hour, 24 hours a day for a whole year, Jon’s 3 minute segments showed people what they could do to combat climate change. He also instigated National Recycling Week and RecyclingNearYou.com.au which is used by over a million Australians a year. In 2009, he co-organized the world’s first bottled water ban in the town of Bundanoon and co-fronted and organized the project’s highly successful global media coverage. He also co-organized the ban on bottled water at the University of Canberra, the largest bottled water ban in the world to date.

In 2011 the Federal Government appointed Jon as the environmental champion for the NBN. This arose from his interest in technology’s ability to reduce the impact that human society has on the environment.

Do Something! has brought about a national wide ban on phosphates in laundry detergents. The first company to sign on was ALDI and now as of June 2011 all detergent manufacturers have committed to the ban with the last phosphate based detergents to be phased out by mid-2014.
