Gilly Hicks set to open in St David's / Dewi Sant, Cardiff

The North Face and Vans to open new stores in Cardiff.

Established brands The North Face and Vans are the latest retailers to join St David’s / Dewi Sant, Cardiff.

Outdoor clothing and equipment specialist The North Face will sell high performance, quality and stylish outdoor products from technical climbing gear to casual apparel. The 3,500 sq ft store - its 11th in the UK and first in Wales - will be located on the upper level of Grand Arcade, close to CK Underwear and Hollister and opposite GAP.

Meanwhile, US footwear and lifestyle brand VANS will open a 2,314 sq ft store on The Hayes – between Hugo Boss and All Saints. Completing the letting of The Hayes, the VANS brand will sell footwear, apparel and accessories for skate, surf and snowboarding.

Steven Madeley, centre director for St David’s said: “The new signings demonstrate how we are continuing to talk to new brands and bring new stores to Cardiff while helping existing retailers to expand their presence in the city. Both The North Face and VANS have excellent reputations and loyal fan bases with a quality offering. Wales boasts an incredible landscape for outdoor activities so I’m sure that these two lifestyle stores will prove popular”.

Urban Outfitters Cardiff

Urban Outfitters are set to open a new store in Cardiff.

The 23,500 sq ft store will be located in the former David Morgan department store on The Hayes, which was previously occupied by Borders bookstore. The store is set to open on 2 Decemeber 2010.

Urban Outfitters has become a destination store for many shoppers in the UK. The stores stock a range of boutique brands alongside established labels such as Franklin & Marshall, Fred Perry and G-Star.

The retailer currently has 12 stores in the UK in cities such as London, Belfast, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester. Urban Outfitters are planning on opening 4 new branches this year - Bath, Brighton, Cardiff and London Spitalfields.

The Cardiff store will be the first Urban Outfitters in Wales.

USC open new flagship store in St David's, Cardiff

USC, the fashion retailer, has opened a new store on the Upper Ground of the Grand Arcade in St David's, Cardiff. The store is located next to Blue Inc, the urban fashion store.

With a striking emphasis on denim and footwear as well as male and female fashion, the St David’s store is only the 2nd in the UK to showcase a fresh new format for USC. The all new 9,621 sq ft store offers customers a one-stop-shop to all the major brands including Diesel, G-Star, Replay and Adidas.

In moving into St David's, USC will join the likes of Republic, Cult, Jack & Jones and Fenchurch.

St David's Cardiff - Student Lock-In

Thousands of students poured into St David’s Cardiff to make its first student lock-in an unprecedented success.

Students lined the streets to gain entry to the event which offered free entertainment and one-night-only discounts from more than 50 top brands within the shopping destination. The queue built up along The Hayes, down Mill Lane and up St Mary Street as an estimated 7,000 students turned out for the lock-in.

Stores reported taking up to half of their usual day’s takings within the first half an hour of the event after students ran in through the doors.

St David’s retailers collaborated for the after-hours lock-in, offering exclusive discounts over and above their usual student discounts. Participating stores offering discounts included Henley’s, Jack Jones, Vero Moda, Apple, Jane Norman and Quiz.

Cult was one of the busiest stores on the night, with queues of more than an hour for each till. Store manager Alan Keery said: “I don’t think it could have gone any better. It was like an invasion with hoards of people running into the store. The queues were constant and went all the way round the store – you couldn’t see the end – it was absolutely nuts. We don’t usually do a student discount so I think that’s why we proved to be so popular. It was definitely an amazing success.”

The event is the first student lock-in that St David’s has held but it proved so successful that St David’s has promised it will be the first of many. The next event for all shoppers at St David’s will be the fashion weekender (October 30-31) to celebrate its first birthday.

David & Goliath are set to open a new store in Cardiff on 6 November 2010.

The retailer which specialises in funny t-shirts, pyjamas and accessories will be opening a new store in the Grand Arcade in St David's, Cardiff. The store will be located in the former Lambretta store, which closed earlier this year.

The Grand Opening is set for the 6 November 2010. On opening day the store will be offering free pop-corn with every purchase and there will be lots of Oompa Lumpas in attendance to meet and greet the new customers.

In addition to Cardiff, David & Goliath have stores in Covent Garden, Carnaby Street, Birmingham and Bluewater in Kent.

Calvin Klein Underwear is set to open a new store in St David’s, Cardiff.

Known for its iconic advertising campaigns featuring top models, celebrities, and newly discovered talent, Calvin Klein Underwear will open a 1,853 sq ft store, on the upper level of the Grand Arcade, near Hollister, Guess and John Lewis.

Ed Hardy by Christian Audigier will no longer open its planned Cardiff store.

The tattoo-inspired Los Angeles fashion brand worn by the likes of Madonna, Kanye West and David Beckham was due to open a 2,300 sq ft store on the Hayes alongside All Saints and Hugo Boss and opposite the planned Urban Outfitters.

The Cardiff store was set to be one of the first regional Ed Hardy stores in the UK. Ed Hardy had a London store located in Westfield Shopping centre but unfortunately that closed during the summer of 2010 when the Australian arm of the company went into administration.

In November 2010, Ed Hardy announced hat they would no longer be opening in Cardiff.

MANGO, the fashion retailer for young, urban women could soon be coming to Cardiff. It was revealed by St David's that they are in contact with Mango with a view to signing them up for a Cardiff store.

Although no store opening has been announced, perhaps it is only a matter of time before Mango set up shop in Cardiff. If the retailer were to open in Cardiff, it would be the retailer's first store in Wales.

Back in September 2009, the Cardiff Shopper wrote an article stating that Hollister, Urban Outfitters and Mango could all soon be coming to Cardiff. Since that article, Hollister have opened in Cardiff and Urban Outfitters have confirmed their store opening for late 2010.

Will Mango make it a hat-trick of signings for Cardiff?

Latest Rumours

Basler
Specialists in smart tailoring for women, Basler is a German fashion retailer. The brand is interested in opening in Cardiff and have had a number of site visits to St David's.

Charles Tyrwhitt
The Jermyn Street shirtmaker announced expansion plans in June 2010 and named Cardiff as target location for new store.

Clas Ohlson
Clas Ohlson, the Swedish department store selling homeware, hardware, electricals, multimedia and leisure goods is set to open in Cardiff. The 17,650-sq ft store will be located on the lower level of the Grand Arcade in St David's.
UPDATE: Clas Ohlson Cardiff is scheduled to open in December 2010.

Cortefiel
Spanish retail giant are set to launch 3 of its brands in the UK this year - Cortefiel, Women'Secret and Springfield. Although Cardiff was not selected as a launch pad for the new stores, Cardiff is ultimately a likely destination.

Deichmann
Bargain shoe retailer Deichmann Shoes has submitted a planning application for a new store in St David's / Dewi Sant. The retailer is no stranger to South Wales as it already has stores in Newport and Cwmbran.

Dwell
The contemporary furniture and home accessories store is set to come to Cardiff. The retailer is currently finalising the lease of a new store in St David's / Dewi Sant.

Ed Hardy
Vintage tattoo inspired fashion and lifestyle for men, women, and children. Ed Hardy by Christian Audigier was set to open in August 2010 but the store opening has faced delays following the Australian arm of the company going into administration. The Cardiff store is still due to open but no date has been set.

Gerry Weber
Specialists in smart tailoring and more casual styles, the Gerry Weber label is famously easy-to-wear and renowned for its clean lines and versatility. Rumoured to be opening a Cardiff store, the brand currently has a store in Cabot Circus in Bristol and is available in Cardiff at John Lewis.

G-Star Raw
G-Star Raw have made a planning application for their new store in St David's, Cardiff. The planned store to be located on Upper Ground opposite H&M and across from Jane Norman.

Hamleys
The famous toy store has been heavily linked with opening a store in Cardiff. It has been widely reported that Hamleys have been in discussions with Land Securities with a view to opening a store in St David's/ Dewi Sant. Hamleys have recently opened a new store in the £100m extension of St Enoch Shopping Centre in Glasgow.

Jacques Vert
Jacques Vert, the elegant ladies fashion label has been linked with opening a stand-alone store in Cardiff. Specialising in wedding outfits and ladies formal wear, Jacques Vert has a wide range of hats, fascinators, jewellery, bags, shoes and accessories. Jacques Vert currently has concessions at both Debenhams and House of Fraser in Cardiff.

Jo Malone
Luxury high-end perfumes, fragrances, candles and beauty product retailer. Jo Malone is rumoured to be opening a store in Cardiff. The retailer currently has stores in London and concessions in premium department stores such as Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and Harrods.
UPDATE: The retailer is currently recruiting staff for their new Cardiff store. The new store will be located near LK Bennett and John Lewis on the Hayes.

Officers Club
The menswear fashion store is dedicated on opening stores in prime locations in both high streets and shopping centres. It has recently opened in Manchester, Derby and Bristol and has been revamping its stores in Oxford Circus and Glasgow. Surely it is only a matter of time before this retail is announced as coming to Cardiff.

Pandora
Pandora specialise in rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings and have collections such as Liquid Silver, Charms and Lovepods.

Urban Outfitters
The uber-cool fashion store had planning application for a Cardiff flagship store rejected by the Cardiff Council. Will Urban Outfitters try again with their ambitious store ideas?

Fossil, the watches and fashion accessories retailer is looking to open a store in Cardiff.

As reported on Retail Week, Fossil has 15 UK stores at present and they want to double that by opening a further 15 stores in the next four years. Cardiff has been named as a possible location for a new store, together with Leeds, Sheffield, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

St David's in Cardiff is a likely destination for the new Fossil store. The store would fit in nicely with the likes of Radley, Swatch, Olli & Nic and the jewellery stores which are all located in and around the Hayes. However, this part of St David's has been extremely popular and it is close to being fully let.

As Fossil stores are typically 1,000 sq ft to 1,300 sq ft in size, the retailer may be tempted to move into one of the more upmarket Cardiff Arcades, such as the Royal and Morgan Arcades.

In addition to watches and fashion accessories, Fossil is trying to develop its clothing range which has been successful in the US. It recently fitted out its Covent Garden store in London with a floor dedicated to clothing. If Fossil were to secure a large unit in Cardiff, it is possible that they may trial their new clothing concept.
