Harry Joiner shared thisMY "AI POLICY" FOR ECOMMERCEJOBS: Yesterday X was ablaze with news of Clay's new internal AI writing policy. (Clay is a supposedly-excellent GTM platform designed for sales and marketing teams. It's on my list of things to demo.) Anyhoo - Clay’s policy decrees that its employees can use chatbots for brainstorming, drafting, proofreading, and/or pasting raw model output if it's clearly labeled. Similar to a "Sent from iPhone" type thing. The basic idea is that - A./ correspondence from a human should take longer to write than to read. Clay wants its employees to stand behind every sentence and be fully responsible for their own work. And … B./ bypassing the writing process prevents Clay employees from fully understanding the subject matter. I'm completely down with B. In fact, I've noticed that my own reading comprehension has dropped this year as my relationship with the written word has changed. That's a “me” problem and I'm working to change that. 🟥 There are a couple of things I want to say about all this: 1./ These observational posts you read in my LinkedIn feed, these are all me. 100%. I'm not using AI to write these. This is the insight / advice you won’t encounter elsewhere, and it’s the stuff on which I’ve built my personal brand. It’s what you’ve come to know and expect. And hopefully it’s worth your attention. 2./ My job postings are another story. I'm not writing my job postings to entertain / inspire. I'm writing them to ANALYZE and INFORM. It’s also what you’ve come to know and expect. And hopefully it’s worth your attention, but for a different reason: My job postings are designed to hit VERY hard, because I know what my readers are going to do with them: copy and paste them into their own AIs and use them to gain a competitive advantage in those candidacies. GOOD FOR THEM! In such cases, the AI is a feature, not a bug. In fact, I guarantee you that not only am I using AI, but I'm using some of the most sophisticated tools available to pull those postings together. The postings take 2-3 hours to write, and that's based on my extensive knowledge of the tools and the subject matter. In other words, I know what the hell I'm doing, and I know how to use the tools at a pro level. And I'm paying for pro-level tools. So that's my policy. Please advise your thoughts and concerns below. ⤵️

Harry Joiner shared this"WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU STAY?" I guess it's okay if I write about this. My candidate and I talked about it already, and he's cool with it. Hopefully you won't make the same mistake he did. Last week, I managed to get one of my searches down to the final three candidates, 11, 22, and 33. The client loved all three of them, and invited two of them out for interviews. Candidate 33 went out on Monday. Candidate 11 was there on Wednesday. They held candidate 22 in reserve. On paper, both 33 and 11 were very similar. Both had exemplary Zoom interviews with each individual member of the hiring committee. It was a real bake-off, let me tell you. Candidate 33 interviews Monday morning and the meetings were like old home week. Some white-boarding. Some backslapping. All smiles. Everyone wraps up at about 11:30 am and the hiring manager excuses 33 to take a 20-minute break before everyone goes to lunch at a local restaurant. All good. Then lunch happened. It didn't even feel like a mistake in the moment, but looking back, it was a boner. Three people from the hiring committee and 33 were enjoying a great lunch. 45 minutes into it, 25 minutes before the check comes, the hiring manager floats the question, "What happens if you stay [in your current job]?" And 33 goes, "That's not happening. I'm definitely leaving, hopefully by the end of the year." And with that one comment, 33 telegraphed to everyone at the table that he was officially flexible on compensation. Not only that, but the comment made my hiring manager more closely consider candidate 11, because candidate 33 telegraphed that, should things not work out with candidate 11, he would still be available to work a deal before Christmas. Basically, any sense of urgency to hire candidate 33 ... any possibility of client FOMO ... completely destroyed. Candidate 11 arrives for her interview on Wednesday. The same scenario plays out, but 11 responds to the same question differently, saying that she's up for a promotion, but she's motivated to leave, at which point she's sure she will get a counteroffer. 🟥 Make of this what you will.

My philosophy: Think of your career as an "interstate" highway (current state vs future state). Hopefully, it's headed in the right direction. But sometimes people get lost. We're all human. When you need to change jobs, look for the next off-ramp. Don't just pull over. Act, don't react.Harry Joiner shared thisQuit your job if you’re not happy. They would lay you off so quick if they needed to. I talk to too many people who are so afraid of how it will look on the resume, what their boss will think - or they will leave after the completion of that big project in Q4. They don’t want to leave the company hanging. Etc. it’s always the same type of thinking. But let’s be real: They would lay your ass off so quick if they needed to. They’d feel bad about it. And they’d still do it. Because that’s just business. There’s never anything wrong with looking out for yourself. That’s all you have anyone - yourself. A company of one. Go and make your new employer happy. They’d be lucky to have you. I’m subtweeting a few friends that I’ve chatted with over the last two weeks of travel. It’s time to make the jump. There’s never going to be a right time to leave. You’ve got this.

Harry Joiner shared thisTHE COFFEE TABLE BOOK TEST: It’s Sunday, and I’m sitting around watching football and looking at the pop culture ecommerce app, Complex. If you haven’t seen it, your loss. Put that on your list. Today there’s an article on Complex about the best coffee table books on the app. Per the app’s editors, “A great coffee-table book does more than fill an empty surface. It can introduce a new visual language, preserve a cultural moment, or turn a familiar icon into something worth looking at again.” 🟥 VP/CMO JOBSEEKERS: Do you have a big marketing interview on tap? Awesome. As you prepare for it, ask yourself “What would an amazing coffee table book look (… feel … and smell … ) like for this brand?” I think that would be a useful 25-min exercise. I’m not asking you to present coffee table book mock-ups to the hiring committee. … but I am asking you to think *playfully* about the elements of the firm’s brand and how those might inform a coffee table book. 🔥 What is it about this brand that’s worth preserving and celebrating? 🟥 SAD BUT TRUE: There’s a good chance the people on the hiring committee have forgotten this themselves and will appreciate your reminding them of what they once loved about their own company. I’ve known many candidates who were hired to help a company get its mojo back.

Penny-wise, pound-foolish. Random thought: when I buy groceries at Publix and they ask me if I want to contribute $1 to Special Olympics, and I say yes, I donate $1. I assume Publix takes all the donations and writes a check to the Special Olympics. Does Publix get some portion of that as a tax deduction?

Mike Hatkevich We've all seen it a million times: Clients are looking for any clue as to how far they can keep their options open. If a candidate gives clients a sense they can be strung along, the client will take advantage of that to keep interviewing candidates. There's a psychology of selling that needs to be learned and practiced, and this candidate didn't know anything about that. Not hating. But that's what happened.

Harry Joiner reacted on thisHarry Joiner reacted on this"Marketers cannot be just managing vendors" This was part of one of many interesting side conversations I had at the Association of National Advertisers Martech conference I attended last week in the DC area. We were discussing how marketers should always ensure they own all the context and decisioning around the zero and first-party data they use. These should always be portable, and not locked behind platforms, so any change in vendors does not mean loosing these intelligence layers that are becoming more and more important to the marketer's day-to-day work. Yes, marketers will still have to manage vendors to help, but the keyword here is help. All the strategy, the marketing definitions that build context for agents and humans alike, governance, etc must be decided by the marketer and not by any vendor or consultant... Also had amazing conversations with my fellow ANA Martech committee volunteers Chris Vitti, Blair McCracken, Ricky Busby, Kim Myers, MBA! I collected a load of li-ion batts for proper disposal and called the toll-free recycling number found on many of the batts. After entering a ZIP code, the automated system gives the caller a list of nearby locations that accept li-ion batts for recycling, including Staples, two miles from my office. I drove over, walked up to a counter, asked where to go to drop-off the batts and the employee told me there’s a $2.99 fee, which will be collected by a cashier, even if the customer is a Rewards member. So, Staples is using environmentally-conscious customer behavior to generate revenue on something on which it’s likely already generating revenue anyway, from selling it to recyclers. One would think Staples might want to use an environmentally-conscious program like that to get people into the stores to shop, as opposed to nickel-and-diming them for the effort. Staples should take a page from Wawa, Inc.’s playbook: Wawa, Inc. offers no-surcharge ATMs in its stores to get people into the stores (as if for some the hoagies weren’t enough!). Not only did I leave the store without achieving my goal, I left wondering why I would come back to StaplesStaples.
