Geneva Motor Show : Audi Q2

German automaker Audi has unveiled its Q2 Compact SUV at the ongoing 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The compact SUV is expected to eventually make its way to India and will be a loner in the segment, while filling in a spot just below the Q3 for the Audi’s India portfolio. The car is expected to go on sale in the European markets this year and in the year 2017, it might make its way to India.

The car finds its foundation in the parent company Volkswagen's MQB platform. At first glance, one can easily spot the LED headlamps, which are wrapped in LED DRLs. The headlamps break away from the current styling approach seen in the Q3 and are a lot more reminiscent of the design approach seen in the refreshed Audi R8, which was recently showcased at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo.

The car is relatively smaller as compared to the Q3, as one would expect and also features a coupe-like roofline. The contrasting colour scheme seen on C-pillar bestows the Q2 with a much more sportier appeal. As far as the interior styling is concerned, they seem to be a straight lift from the A3 sedan.

Under the hood, this compact SUV is offered with a range of power options, which include the 1.0-litre three-cylinder TFSI, which produces 114bhp of power and will be shared with the A1. Also, the automaker will release the car with a 1.4-litre TFSI petrol mill, which will be offered with cylinder-on-demand technology and topping the range will be the 2.0-litre TFSI powerplant, which is capable of producing a peak power output of 187bhp.

Undertaking the powerplant duties for the diesel variants is Audi’s 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre mills and even though the 1.6-litre mill will only be made available in one state of tune viz. 114bhp, the 2.0-litre unit will be offered in power output states of 148bhp and 187bhp.

The powerplant options will be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission and the S tronic automatic gearbox might be made available as an option on the 2.0-litre diesel and petrol model.

Geneva Motor Show : Tata Tiago

Tata Zica which has been renamed as Tiago, was showcased at the on-going 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The Indian automaker has rebadged it, courtesy the resemblance of its previous name ‘Zica’ to that of the ‘Zika’ virus. Tata has showcased the personalised version of its hatch at Geneva, which was recently displayed at Tata’s pavilion during the 2016 Indian Auto Expo.

Speaking of its name, Tata had shortlisted three names for this entry level hatchback, namely - Civet, Tiago and Adore. Though, the manufacturer finally narrowed it down to Tiago. Speaking of its launch, the hatch will forge its way into the Indian market within a month's duration. It will be an entry-level offering, sitting between the Nano and the Bolt. A recent report also stated that Tata has kick-started the production of Tiago at their Sanand’s plant. It is the same unit which also manufactures the Nano.

Besides the name, nothings have been altered in this hatch. We drove it in December last year. This vehicle has been loaded to the brim relatively compared with the segment and is coming with brand new petrol and diesel engines from Tata Motors. Moreover, Tiago will soon be followed by its twin compact sedan - kite 5 (codename), which is yet to get a name. The compact sedan was also showcased at the Indian Auto Expo and is even present at the Geneva Motor Show. Both the vehicle will share mechanicals and features with each other.

Geneva Motor Show : Ferrari GTC4Lusso

Ferrari has showcased the GTC4Lusso at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The name sounds distinctive and the credit for same should be delivered to Ferrari, as they have creatively amalgamated the names of 330 GTC and 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso, along with the seating capacity of the four-wheeler (4). The upgraded version of the FF has made its international debut at the Switzerland show, though the car had been showcased earlier.

When compared to its predecessor, GTC4Lusso has a more attractive rear profile. Partial credit can be paid to the twin pod lamps in the automobile. It also gets a 4RM Evo four-wheel drive and a steering system, which enables the driver to control the rear wheels as well. Interiors remain roughly the same, with an addition of a 10.25 inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Ferrari finds the FF's 6.2-litre V12 engine suitable and thus, has retained it to GTC4Lusso. But, the Italian automaker is well aware of the power demands of their customers and therefore, have enhanced the figures to 680 bhp and 697 Nm. This humongous power delivery capacity is enough to take the car from a standstill to 100 kmph in a mere 3.4 seconds. Transmission duties are carried out by a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic unit.

Geneva Motor Show : Aston Martin DB11

Aston Martin has at last unveiled its post Bond DB series car, the DB11. This is the first product to be launched under the company’s ‘Second Century’ plan. The car is just staggering and packs a 600bhp 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine, which makes it the most powerful production DB car ever to be made. It employs state of art aerodynamics, and just a singular glance is enough to establish this.

Recommended Retail Price for the car is a staggering sum of £154,900 (INR 1,46,41,407) in the UK, €204,900 (INR 1,50,55,807) in Germany and $211,995 (INR 1,43,55,336) in the USA. First deliveries of the DB11 are scheduled to begin during the fourth quarter of 2016.

Honda Cars India Ltd. (HCIL) has introduced a new Petrol/ CNG bi-fuel version of its Amaze compact sedan. Christened the Amaze 1.2 S MT Plus, the new variant is available from today onwards in the cities where the alternative fuel is on offer. Commenting on the introduction of the new variant, Jnaneswar Sen, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Sales, Honda Cars India said, “At HCIL, we constantly work towards enhancing customer experience through our products and services. We are extremely happy to bring the Amaze with a CNG option for our customers, which will not only be cheaper to run and maintain but also eco-friendly.”

According to the company, the new variant has been specially tuned to run on CNG, the suspension has been tweaked, and a specially prepared wiring harnesses to ensure high level of quality has been added. It will be offered with a 2-year warranty as standard."The new variant with bi-fuel option of Petrol/ CNG is being offered in the market to meet the needs of customers who are looking for an alternate fuel vehicle with high performance and low running cost,” said HCIL in a statement.

Launched in 2013, the Amaze has been the fastest Honda car to surpass the 1 lakh sales mark in India. Being offered in more than a dozen petrol and diesel variants, mated to manual and automatic gearboxes, the highlight of the Amaze remains the 1.5 i-DTEC diesel engine churning out 98bhp and 200Nm, while the petrol counterpart is powered by a 1.2-liter i-VTEC mill, same as the Brio.

Audi's innovative technology to save on fuel consumption

The German luxury car brand, Audi, has come up with an interesting technology that would work to save time and fuel together. Audi's online traffic light information system has got the potential to help you save excessive fuel consumption. This innovative technology works in sync with the Audi Connect feature, and links the car and traffic light network, which is again monitored via a central traffic computer.

The technology is very quick at response, and immediately displays the information on driver information system (DIS) present on central instrument cluster when approached to any traffic light change. If the driver is waiting at a red light, then the system calculates the possible time to reach next green light. It also reduces CO2 emissions by 15 per cent, which also helps in saving fuel. It also stays connected with the car's start-stop function to ensure the engine is turned on five seconds before the green light appears.

Honda's NSX engine

Honda, the Japanese automaker has showcased the engine layout of its upcoming NSX hybrid supercar at the ongoing 84th Geneva Motor Show. The concept had also gathered much appreciation when its was showcased at recently concluded Delhi Auto Expo. Its is expected that the car will be available to its customers by the early 2015.

The NSX hybrid gets a V6 petrol engine, mounted longitudinally with direct injection facility to increase the mileage figures. Moreover, being a hybrid car, the engine is also coupled to electric motors. The V6 engine does all the duty of driving rear axle, while the front wheels gets its power from two electric motors that can also vary the torque applied on each wheel and the company calls it Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive). The power is transferred via dual-clutch CVT gearbox. This hybrid engine provides a maximum power out of 400bhp.

Kia's T-Hybrid system.

Hyundai's subsidiary Kia Motors Corporation has showcased its new hybrid system: T-Hybrid along with the premier of its electric vehicle named as Soul EV. The T-Hybrid system includes a electric motor connected to a 48V lead carbon battery. This hybrid system is designed and manufactured by the company's R&D center in Europe, is said to be used in all the upcoming Kia models. In this system, the battery provides energy to an electric supercharger which further increase power and torque at the low engine speed.

Initially at the low speed or high speed, the engine puts the car in pure electric mode while when in the deceleration mode battery is charged. The carmaker has also showcased brand's first ever seven speed dual-clutch transmission which enhances the fuel economy by seven percent and allows the car to boost its 100kmph mark by 5%.

Renault 1.6-liter twin turbo diesel engine.

Renault, the French automaker has showcased its new 1.6-litre twin turbo diesel engine at the 84th Swiss Motor Show. This new engine will power the likes of D and D+ segment car that includes Fluence and Megane Coupe. The engine produces a displacement of 1598cc, while developing a maximum power output of 160bhp and peak torque of 380Nm. This 1.6-litre is company's first ever manufactured engine that uses two turbochargers along with the use of transverse water flow that provides better and efficient cooling of the combustion chamber.

Nissan Smart Rearview Mirror.

Smart is the new cool! The Japanese automaker has developed world's first Smart Rearview Mirror that uses LCD screen monitor on the Interior Rear View Mirror (IRVM). The LCD screen can also be changed to the traditional rearview mirror with just a flick of a button. On using the LCD screen, the visibility gets enhanced as a high resolution-camera which is mounted on the rear pillar of vehicle captures the live feed and projects onto the mirror. In the traditional IRVM, the visibility gets effected when luggage or a tall passenger gets seated in the rear row, but this will not happen in the case of Smart Rearview, as it get its live feed from rear mounted high resolution camera. The headlight glare from vehicle trailing behind, can also be minimized in the Smart Rearview. The automaker is planning to bring this smart rearview in the upcoming Nismo car and to the global markets by the year 2015.

Apple's CarPlay

Apple, the multi-billion Computing Co on seeing the ever lasting demand of highly sophisticated infotainment system used in vehicle, has brought its latest development CarPlay at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show. CarPlay is the first ever unified mobile linking platform in automobiles by Apple, ahead of its arch competitors Google and Microsoft. CarPlay connects the iPhone's equipped with lightning cable, namely, 5, 5C and 5S. Carplay comes as an update in the Apple's latest operating system iO7.1.

Audi stated that the new system is lighter with single motor powering the front wheels and all the front wheel drive assembly integrates into the monocoque of the R18.

“We’ve developed the entire hybrid drive from scratch again for 2014,” explains Dr. Martin Mühlmeier, Head of Technology at Audi Sport. “Specifically, it’s become even lighter and more efficient than before.” The company also developed a new flywheel storage system for recuperated energy generation, the energy stored can be used in the boost mode.

Honda City triumphs Hyundai Verna, clinches the No. 1 mid-size sedan tag

With the launch of new City, the Japanese carmaker, Honda, registered unprecedented growth with an overall monthly domestic sales of 14,543 units in February'14. The growth graph has increased to 123%, and undoubtedly the recently launched Honda City contributed maximum to it. The scenario has totally altered with the new City beating the ever since segment leader, Hyundai Verna to top the sales charts. The company sold 7213 units of City in a small time-frame as it was launched only in the January'14. Hyundai Xcent launching tomorrow

Hyundai India is all-set to launch the new sub-4 metre sedan, Xcent, tomorrow in New Delhi. With the new Xcent, the compact sedan segment will get further populated with existing competition in the name of Honda Amaze and Maruti Swift Dzire. Based on Grand i10 hatchback, the new sedan carries many of the styling elements from its hatch sibling.

Xcent is the company's first ever compact sedan, and as every other Hyundai product, this too is a feature rich car launching tomorrow. Under the hood, the sedan gets powered by both petrol and diesel engines- 1.2-litre petrol and 1.1-litre diesel guise. The petrol mill is capable of delivering 82bhp of max power output and 114Nm of top torque. While, the diesel offers 70bhp of max power and 160Nm of top torque. The petrol variant gets both four-speed automatic transmission and five-speed manual transmission. While, the diesel engine comes clubbed with only five-speed manual gear transmission.

Inside the cabin, the car features rear AC vents, smart key with push button, 2 DIN audio system with USB, CD player with 1GB internal memory, glove box cooling, steering mounted audio controls and Bluetooth, auto folding mirrors and rear arm rest with cup holders. BMW's futuristic hybrid - i8 will go in production this April

Remember the white i8 grabbing the eye balls at the BMW stand in the 2014 Auto Expo Delhi. Well, the German automaker has announced the production plan for this futuristic hybrid car and not to mention the most efficient one! The production of the i8 will start this April and the initial deliveries of the vehicle will start by June in few location across the globe.

Speaking of the engine, unlike it all electric sibling i3, the i8 will be powered by BMW's twin turbo 1.5 litre petrol. The three pot mill is coupled to an electric motor powered by lithium-ion battery pack. The gasoline mill solely produces power of 230bhp and a peak torque of 320Nm while the electric motor powering the front wheels churns 130bhp along with max torque of 250Nm. Total power comes down to nearly 360bhp. In fully electric mode the i8 transforms into a front wheel drive vehicle, in the coupled mode power comes to all the four wheel providing maximum traction. The conjuctional power train propels this state of the art machine from standstill to 100kmph barrier in mere 4.4 seconds with a top whack electronically limited to 250kmph.

The green got greener! The production version mileage figures of the i8 went higher from earlier speculations(40kmpl), the efficiency stats stands at 2.1L/100 km (approximately lands to a whooping 47kmpl!). The company claims that the all battery range of the car will be 37 km with C02 emissions of 49g/km.

Displayed at the Expo, BMW India mentioned that there will be under 10 units for Indian customers at least for initial production stock, deliveries will start in the second half of 2014.

Tata Prima Truck Racing begins on 23rd March

The silence of the acclaimed Buddh International Formula 1 Circuit in Greater Noida will be once gain broken but this time by roar of mammoth engines of heavy modified trucks on March 23. Six racing behemoths weighing about six tonnes each will burst into sight during the T1 PRIMA Truck racing championship being introduced in the country for the first time by Tata Motors.

This is the spectacle fans will be treated to as the event will be the first-ever truck racing championship to be held in India and marks another small step forward for Indian motorsport as the country increasingly asserts itself on the global motor-racing stage. The series, spanning two days, (day one March 22 will be dedicated to media) will use Six heavily-modified Tata Prima beasts capable of putting out 370 horsepower and reaching a top speed of 110 kilometers per hour driven by international drivers.

The first ever truck racing championship in India, has been inscribed on the calendars of FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) and FMSCI (the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India). Event is being managed by T.I.C.

The T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship is being organised by Madras Motor Sports Club of India (MMSCI), with safety and performance standards being followed as per (BTRA) British Truck Racing Association guidelines. Each truck/team is owned by a principal sponsorer. There will be total of 12 races featuring Tata Prima racing trucks, Commercial and Passenger vehicles. Each race will cover 15 laps.

The truck drivers will be of International acclaim and foreign nationals besides Indian drivers especially trained for the event . The main highlights of the Tata Motors T1 Truck racing will be gala opening and closing ceremony with host of celebrities like Mika, Salim Sulamain,Sivamani & Sanjay Shetty’s troupe of dancers performing, Bollywood personalities, Truck exhibition, merchandise shops, test drives on trucks for the public & media , food court with kid's fun zone. To make these Prima trucks fit for racing, 22 key modifications were made to meet a mix of safety and performance needs as per guidelines from British Truck Racing Association. These included significant changes in fuel tank, brake cooling system, propeller shaft guards, racing seats and safety belts, exhaust, steering wheel among others. The trucks have gone through multiple quality checks and also tested on the test circuit at Jamshedpur for high speed run and control.

The T1 PRIMA TRUCK RACING CHAMPIONSHIP will witness two-time British truck racing champion, Steve Horn, who is among the most celebrated, longest serving truck racing drivers, playing an instrumental role in the first ever Truck racing championship of India.

Both the organisers TATA Motors & the event management company TIC executing the T1 championship have a challenging task at hand to bring to life this spectacle for the Indian audience.

Datsun Go deliveries to begin from March 15, ahead of its launch on 18th

Datsun will launch the Go on the 18th of March and this will be the first product from this new brand, not just in India but globally too. However, as per reliable sources the deliveries will begin from 15, a couple of days ahead of its launch. Based on the Micra platform, the Go is an entry-level hatchback that will target first-time car buyers in the price bracket of under Rs 4 lakhs. The main competition to the Datsun Go will be the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 and the Hyundai Eon.

The Datsun Go comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 64bhp of power and comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The Go will be available only in petrol and shall be sold through the existing Nissan dealerships. The Go will come with three variant options, the top of the line will get features like mobile docking station, front power windows and dual-tone fabric. Even this model is likely to cost under Rs 4 lakhs, atleast the ex-showroom pricing.

Datsun Go will be available in four colours, White, silver, red and blue. The interior trims will be basic beige or a dual-tone beige and brown. The dual-tone will be available on the experience variants. The biggest USP of the Go, will be its space, powertrain and the design. This is the first vehicle to have a mobile docking station, which comes as a factory-fit in it. The top-of-the-line doesn’t even get ABS. If you need safety features, then possibly Nissan Micra Active will have to be your choice. The Eon is being offered with a driver airbag as an optional feature. The Alto K10 misses out on safety features too.

The Datsun Go is the most spacious in its segment and the 1.2-litre engine returns a fuel efficiency of in excess of 20 km/l as per the ARAI driving cycle. The Go also has a driver information system that tells you about the fuel efficiency, the trip etc. Datsun states this is also a segment-first feature in the Go.

Toyota sells 11,284 units in February

Japanese auto giant - Toyota Kirloskar Motor has announced that it has sold 11,284 units in the month of February 2014 as compared to 13,979 units in Feb 2013. As per the company, they exported 1,184 units of Etios series in the same month.

In the domestic market Toyota sold 10,100 units as compared to 12,756 units for the same period. "“The excise duty cut was a welcome step taken by the Govt to revive sale. However, other factors like high interest rate, falling rupee and unstable fuel pricing still loom large in the market.", commented N Raja, Senior Vice - President, Sales and Marketing on this report.

Hyundai sells 46,505 units in Feb, 2014 ; exports down by 39.5%

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), the country’s second largest car manufacturer and the largest passenger car exporter registered the domestic sales of 34,005 units and exports of 12,500 units with cumulative sales of 46,505 units for the month of February 2014.

Commenting on the February sales Mr. Rakesh Srivastava, Sr. VP- Sales and Marketing, HMIL said, "Post the reduction in excise duty, enquiry inflow has increased with February sales of 34,005 units with a growth of 2% over the earlier month and it is expected that this would lead towards creation of a positive momentum."

Mahindra declares monthly sales figures

India's leading SUV manufacturer, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M Ltd.), brings out their monthly sales figures which stood at 42,166 units for the month of February 2014.

The Passenger Vehicles segment (which includes UVs and Verito) sold 19,308 units in February 2014, as against 23,421 units during February 2013. The company’s domestic sales stood at 39,338 units during February 2014, as against 44,399 units during February 2013. The 4-wheelers commercial segment has sold 14,701 units, while the 3-wheelers segment clocked 4,724 units in February 2014. Exports for the month stood at 2,828 units.

While passenger segment is faces industry slack, the FARM EQUIPMENT SECTOR has seen a growth of 19% this February. The tractor sales were at 16,552 units in the domestic market, as against 13,944 units in February 2013, a growth of 19%. The company’s overall sales have also grown by 18%, reaching 17,592 units during February 2014.

Maruti Swift and Swift Dzire facelifts coming this year

At the 2014 Indian Auto Expo, Maruti Suzuki India launched its Celerio hatchback and unveiled Ciaz and SX4 S Cross. Moreover, the company also displayed the performance oriented Swift Sport. The company is now planning to introduce the facelifted version of Swift and Swift Dzire by the festive season. Earlier, both models were rumoured to be launched at the Auto Expo.

The competition level in the compact sedan segment is going to be stiffer, as Hyundai and Tata Motors have already announced their plans of launching a compact sedan in a next couple of months. Ford India had also unveiled the Figo compact sedan concept, which is scheduled to make its debut by the end of this year or by early 2015. With Honda Amaze doing great, Maruti Suzuki India decided to revamp its Swift Dzire, which is currently ruling the segment.

Maruti Swift facelift has already been launched in the International Markets like Japan and Europe. And, we expect that the company will not take much time to launch the updated Swift and its sedan sibling in India. The updated hatch gets LED daytime running lights mounted into the fog lamp, redesigned front bumper, and the LED treatment continuous to the rood mounted stop lamp at the rear.
