If you put your head down and do your assigned job, don't expect raises. Don't expect to not be laid off. Expect to be dispensable and keep your resume up to day.

From the article:

Azzarello’s career advice for employees is to make sure the work that you do is aligned with the company’s goals, bring your accomplishments to the attention of your superiors, and create a network of mentors who will guide you and ensure that you win a spot on the company’s list of employees who are the leaders of tomorrow. Her advice is tersely described as: Do better, look better, and connect better.

This is great article and I'd suggest you take a few minutes to check it out.

Are You Invisible?

If you'd like a few tips on how to avoid being invisible, check out Career 2.0, now on sale at $15 a copy.

Five Things You Can Do to Boost Your Career

The economy is starting to recover in spots. Are you ready for it? How well positioned are you to take advantadge of the recovery?

When things begin looking good again, will you be in survival mode, treading water until your strength gives out? Or will you have positioned yourself well enough that you maximize your return?

Here are five things you can do today to position yourself as an 'overnight success' in the next year or two.

Join your local user group. Whether you're into Java, .Net, Ruby, or Agile, there's probably a great group in your neighborhood already. Meetup.com is a great place to start looking for one.

Join a few national mailing lists. Both Yahoo Groups and Google Groups house thousands of mailings on topics from Agile to lean to test automation and more.

Attend local miniconferences. Here in RTP we've just had a TED conference, an Agile Coach Camp, a few other evening events, and more. We've got Citcon (CI and test automation) coming, as well as a one day Intro to Agile mini-conference. And those are just the ones of the top of my head! What's going on in your area? Contact your MS evangilist, or tool vendor of choice and ask them when they're coming to town.

Speak up! Be active in your local user group's mailing, or your national list. Ask a few softball questions. Ask for help. Answer someone else's questions. But don't sit on the sidelines. Lurking is fine until you learn the group, but get in the game.

Pick your favorite tool and write a How To article. Then post it on your blog. (Don't have a blog? Then visit Blogger.com and you'll have one in five minutes!) There are lots of people who want to learn how to use tool X or technique N. Write it up and post it.

At the end of the day, and of every day, you've got to decide if you've got a job or a career. If it's "just a job", then by all means, just survive and try to make it through to the next paycheck. But if it's something you want to truly succeed at, don't hide! Get out and reposition yourself!

Blatant commercial plug You can find even more tips on tuning up your career in Career 2.0: Take Control of Your Life.

You can also check out Land the Tech Job You Love by Andy Lester and The Passionate Programmer: Creating a Remarkable Career in Software Development by Chad Fowler.

The information is out there. It's from another North Carolina resident, but we've never (to my knowledge) met.

Denilson's blog entry is titled Layoffs, sheep, shepherds, and wolves and deals with the choices we all face. It's a long entry, but I'd encourage you to read it through.

Here are a few excerpts.

Behaving like a sheep is about making as few choices as possible, settling into a stable situation and hoping things will not change. Sheep intentionally put their fates at hand of shepherds and unknowingly at the mercy of wolves. Time after time, sheep seek seemingly safe settings and stay there until the inexorable dangers of political and economical instability surround them again. Sheep regard being outside a wolf’s stomach to be a good life, and being inside the wolf’s stomach the result of random and cruel chance.

......

At the root of sheepish thought is the belief that we cannot influence the events around us. That is partly true, but we do have control over our preparedness to face those events.

....

If we wait until disaster hits to start making choices, we may find out that there are only bad and worse choices.

.....
A botched project will not be followed by another chance, but by a round of layoffs.

If you enjoyed reading Career 2.0, I think you'll enjoy The RTP Scrolls as well.

Career 2.0 Facebook Group

For those of you who spend time on Facebook, a friend created a Facebook group and passed on control to me. Learn a new language each year. This has been a persistent theme for several years... I first heard of this reading The Pragmatic Programmer a decade ago. It's golden advice if you take it... I haven't as much as I should have!

Today you have an opportunity to put the advice to use and learn one of the new JVM languages. Venkat Subramaniam's new Scala book just went into beta! (link). This means you can read it now, and offer feedback on the parts you don't understand or have trouble wrapping your head around. And Venkat can fix the book before it goes to press.

In other words, you can get Venkat to write the book you want to read. ;) It's not quite that cut and dried, but it's a great start. If you're considering Scala as your next Language of the Year, this would be a great way to begin.

Programming Scala

Be the First Crab!

After the Boston No Fluff Just Stuff conference, Karim Bahai heard the keynote, got the book, and started a blog. It's been popular now for a while, so it's not just a flash in the pan. It's really worth learning, especially if you're in the Ruby community.

If you're wanting to learn git, here's a great whttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifebsite:

GitReady

But more than just learning, use the site as inspiration. Maybe you'll be the next website someone else blogs about. :)

btw, I found this link on a reddit post. I want to get involved... Lots of great fodder in here!

New Version of the Book Available

I completed a significant number of copy edits and layout changes in the book today and got it uploaded to Lulu.com Other than running into a few very annoying bugs with Word on Mac (probably caused by my moving between versions), it's a very easy process to update the book.

You can find the new and improved Career 2.0: Take Control of Your Life

More Advice on Blogging and Slide Design

Career 2.0 reader Chris Wash had several great suggestions for blog entries. They were too late for the first edition of the book, but they were so good, I wanted to at least share them in a blog entry.

Blog Tips

- Cultivate a blogroll and stay up to date on it. Networking in the blogosphere is a good way to promote your blog and stay abreast of "hot topics"

- Respond to other blogs - instead of burying your thoughts deep in a comment thread, start writing a blog entry of your own in response to another one (or article). This will draw upon previous readership and can be a lighthearted way to "throw your hat in the ring" on a certain topic.

- Link to your previous posts where you've already expressed your opinion on a topic, and update previous posts to forward readers who may have found a particular blog entry via search engine to how your opinions or knowledge of a subject have changed. This can go a long way in growing a strong reader base. If people see you're good for more than one good entry, they're much more inclined to RSS your blog and continue reading.

Slide Design

- Humor! If you aren't having a good time, your audience won't either.

- Experiment using animation - it's a good way to keep the audience engaged during a narrative. Just be sure to do it tastefully.

- Less is more - Put constraints on yourself when designing slides. Garr Reynolds talks about this in Presentation Zen and it really blew my mind when I read it. Constraints make you more creative!

- Don't design a presentation in front of a computer. Just like in PP and other places, you need to get your brain in a different, more creative mode of thinking. Use sticky notes, paper, whatever. But don't just sit there and play in Keynote or Powerpoint. Your slides will show.

- There are a few principles of design that can make your slides more aesthetically pleasing:
- The rule of thirds: http://photoinf.com/Golden_Mean/Michael_Fodor/Photo_School_-_Rule_of_Thirds.htm, http://www.presentationzen.com/presentationzen/2006/06/the_power_of_th.html
- I can't find the principle for this or any links, but can ask my designer friends (I know there are some good articles on it) but if you use a picture of a person, position them in such a way as to have their eyes looking at the text on the slide. This will naturally guide the readers to your message.

Thanks Chris! That's great advice.

Everyone, keep the great ideas coming! I won't publish your ideas without your permission, but I'll try to pass on great ideas.

Java Blogs: Keep An Eye on the Industry

In the Career 2.0 presentation I often tell people about blog aggregators. A small subset of developers are familiar with them, but most aren't. So let me point you to JavaBlogs.com.

The front page of Javablogs shows postings as they scroll by. Someone blogs, and they've registered their blog with JavaBlogs, and they make the front page. But the next posting scrolls them down, and so on.

The postings that look interesting get clicked. Get enough clicks and you end up on the Hot Entries page. I find the Hot Entries page is a great way to see what the Java community is interested in today.

If you haven't added your blog to JavaBlogs, I'd really encourage you to check it out. It's a great site to get your blog pushed out to thousands of developers all over the world, and it's also a great site to keep your finger on the pulse of the industry.

Career 2.0: Take Control of Your Life is now available!

After a month of working overtime on evenings and weekends, the Career 2.0: Take Control of Your Life book is now available for purchase! You can find it on Lulu.com ( link) now, and it'll be on Amazon in a few months.

The content in the book was shaped by the feedback and blog entries from so many people... I sat down and tried to figure out how many people I'd given the Career 2.0 talk/keynote and realized it was (conservatively) over two thousand people! And after nearly every talk a few people came up to share a new idea, or a better example, or to ask why I hadn't added in this or that idea. The talk has really grown, and this is the culmination.

But it's not done either... given how Lulu.com works, I can upload and entirely new version of the book in about 10 minutes, and you'll get the latest version. So I'll be fixing typos as they're reported. The time line to finish the book was so tight that I've still get reviews I haven't had time to incorporate. We're close to getting them all fixed though.

One addition that's been getting rave reviews is the "Rogue's Gallery" appendix. I received so many great career stories from people that I couldn't fit them into the book as sidebars as I'd planned. Cutting down content from Neal Ford or Venkat Subramaniam is hard! Which part do you take out? So I added in an appendix with the best stories I received. Whether you're reading about Chad Fowler or Nathaniel T. Schutta, I think you'll find more gold in their stories and advice.

If you've been thinking about your career, or job, in these times, I'd really encourage you to check out Career 2.0. I hope it'll remind you of what you knew you should be doing, and provide new ideas and directions as well.

A Review of the Career 2.0 Talk, and the Video

I spoke Monday evening at the Minneapolis Java User's group, and thanks to a nifty iPhone utility provided by qik.com, I was able to stream (and record) the video via my iPhone.

Because it was streaming, Surya was able to watch the talk from Philadelphia.
