I have attached some information regarding the workshop that Tulsa Tech will be hosting November 4-5 at our Riverside Campus. I appreciate your willingness to share the information with Career Tech STEM teachers, administrators, and ODCTE staff.

Dear Educator, On behalf of Oklahoma State University and the College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology, we would like to invite your junior students to attend OSU CEAT J-Day 2013. This year?s CEAT Junior Day will take place on Friday, April 19th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the OSU main campus in Stillwater. The day-long event features an Avengers theme, speakers on various topics related to engineering, architecture, and technology, introductory breakout sessions for students: individual interests, creative competitions (for prizes!) based on problem-solving and real-world skills, catered breakfast and lunch from Stillwater's own Red Rock Bakery, and tours of the college and campus. This is a great opportunity for students who have an interest in engineering, technology, math, science, or students who are unsure of what major they might be interested in to learn more about the fields they can pursue and to experience the amazing culture of Oklahoma State. We encourage you to extend this invitation to all of your junior students, advertise with the attached flyer, and inform their teachers of this opportunity. We are pleased to invite you to apply for the University of Oklahoma College of Engineering Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Program: Strengthening a K12 Learning Community through Engineering Research. Our program is funded by the National Science Foundation as part of their commitment to building the workforce in science and engineering. You, as teachers, are critical in the decisions students make about their future careers. The RET is a six-week on-site summer program, starting June 11, 2012 and ending July 20, 2012. This is the fifth year of our program. Over the past years, we have had the privilege of working with 57 teachers teaching math and science courses from 40 schools across the state.

The RET provides high-school math and science teachers the opportunity to actively work with OU engineering faculty on engineering research. You will use this hands-on experience to develop authentic inquiry-based math and/or science curriculum that you will implement during the 2012-2013 academic year. The RET provides a total stipend of $4000 for participation in the year-long program. Nominal travel funds are available to those with demonstrated need.

It is to be noted that grant seekers must address one of the foundations focus areas of math, science, or access to technology.

CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR THE KAVLI SCIENCE VIDEO CONTEST

Grades 6-12 students compete for the chance to win $2000 (first prize) and a travel stipend to Washington DC to attend the festival. The winners are also honored in an awards ceremony, hosted by Bill Nye, as part of the festival.

Why Should I Care Who?s An Engineer? The Need for Women in Engineering
Tulsa Engineering Summit, Friday, March 2nd, 9:00 ? 9:45 AM,
University of Tulsa, Allen Chapman Activity Center

In recent years, the technical community has looked at ways to
increase the number of individuals in engineering. In evaluating the
data of what makes up the population of current engineers, it helps
us look at where future engineers may be - the under-represented
areas today ? women, minorities, etc. In the spirit of educating
technical communities about the importance of this issue, Cathy
Pieronek will present statistics about the under-representation of
women and minorities in engineering, provide information about why we
need more in engineering, and discuss the changes needed to bring
more women and minorities into the field.

About the Speaker:
Cathy Pieronek is Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs and Director of
the Women's Engineering Program at the University of Notre Dame
College of Engineering. She earned her B.S. in aerospace engineering
and her law degree from the University of Notre Dame and her M.S. in
aerospace engineering from UCLA. She has worked as a systems engineer
on NASA projects for TRW Space & Defense Sector in Redondo Beach, CA,
and as Director of External Relations for the Notre Dame Law School.
In her current role, Cathy is responsible for the academic progress
of all of the college's undergraduates, with a special emphasis on
women. She has worked within the college and across the university to
address issues that affect the retention of women. Her efforts have
led to a variety of programmatic changes that improved the retention
of women from first year to sophomore year, bringing women's
retention on par with men's and raising the retention rates of all
students.

Cathy's research interests focus on engineering education, and
particularly on issues that affect the persistence of women in
engineering, and on Title IX and the relationship of the
gender-equity law to both academic and athletic opportunities for
women. She has published and presented peer-reviewed papers on
various aspects of her research at conferences sponsored by the
American Society for Engineering Education, Society of Women
Engineers, Women in Engineering ProActive Network, Frontiers in
Education and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and
has appeared on television shows discussing equality for women in
academics and athletics.
