Covisint and Carefx Partner to Deliver Complete Interoperability Solution for Health Information Exchange (HIE) Initiatives

Solution will connect physicians and other clinicians to multiple IT systems and applications, spanning ambulatory and inpatient careSCOTTSDALE, AZ - Nov. 9, 2009 - Addressing the burgeoning demand for health information exchange (HIE) to coordinate and better leverage patient information, two health IT industry leaders - Covisint, a subsidiary of Compuware Corporation, and Carefx - have partnered to market an integrated workflow solution that ties together the full spectrum of care, from physician offices to labs and pharmacies, to multiple information systems within hospitals.Announced at the Healthcare IT Summit being held in La Quinta, CA, Nov. 8-10, the new Covisint-Carefx partnership brings together Covisint's cloud-based collaboration platform, which connects physicians to patient information and healthcare applications in a secure web-based environment, with Carefx's Fusionfx, an interoperable workflow solution for hospitals and health systems that streamlines the way clinicians interact with patient data, reducing errors and increasing productivity. By using technologies that close the information gaps between providers, venues and information systems, clinicians can provide patients with a more consistent, higher quality care experience. "The combined Covisint and Carefx solution will significantly improve healthcare delivery by covering all facets of the patient care spectrum," said Brett Furst, Vice President of Healthcare for Covisint. "Covisint and Carefx are committed to shaping the future of healthcare with solutions serving the entire care continuum. Together, this relationship leverages innovation in a way that improves complete access to patient information to ensure quality of care, while driving down costs.""Leveraging the technology innovation of our two companies provides the ability to present information that draws on a patient's encounters with multiple practitioners. With public attention focused on quality of care, this collaboration is more important than ever," said Andrew Hurd, Chairman and CEO of Carefx. Covisint's readily available secure platform and cloud-computing approach features a community-based portal framework, identity management, single sign-on, master patient index, record-locator service and secure messaging between physician offices and other healthcare entities. Fusionfx, from Carefx, enhances clinical workflows by offering clinicians real-time, unified views of relevant in-patient and imaging data across multiple applications. Clinicians who must often navigate multiple applications from many different hospital facilities and systems can access synchronized patient data because of Fusionfx's skillful integration of those applications into a customized portal. Leveraging this combined platform enables healthcare communities and organizations to securely:

Access and share a wide variety of administrative and clinical information, including the ability to manage order and results delivery, e-prescribing, and integration with most ambulatory EMR (electronic medical record) and PM (practice management) systems.
Deliver community-wide single sign-on (SSO) access to all external applications and services via AppCloudTM, Covisint's secure marketplace of healthcare applications that are accessed by a physician practice or hospital. AppCloud leverages Covisint's federation capabilities and includes patient-centric management, enabling navigation across multiple, disparate applications.
Enable the dynamic aggregation of community-based patient information into patient-centric dashboard views in one centralized location for providers and physicians.

The Covisint-Carefx partnership comes at a critical time. The HIT Policy Committee of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has identified data capture and sharing by 2011 as one of three phases for achieving meaningful use of health information technology, along with advanced clinical processes by 2013 and improved outcomes by 2015. But sharing healthcare data is fraught with problems. Clinicians in a community or service area work with multiple EHR systems which typically do not communicate with each other. The data fragmentation continues as separate systems for physician offices, clinics, imaging centers, commercial labs and retail pharmacies are introduced to the mix. Hospitals and medical centers often house dozens of systems and harbor concerns about the economic, technical and legal consequences of sharing information with other, nonaffiliated entities. The Covisint-Carefx partnership directly addresses the data sharing requirement for achieving meaningful use by tying together multiple information systems through customized portals that synchronize patient information across every point of care. The Covisint-Carefx solution is also likely to generate greater interest in HIE development and participation. A 2009 survey from the non-profit eHealth Initiative (eHI) reported that the electronic exchange of health information between physicians, hospitals, health plans and patients had increased 40 percent since 2008, with gains seen in cost management and care provided by physician practices. Health information exchanges will transform healthcare, as every player on the healthcare scene - physicians, other clinicians, hospitals, ancillary providers, health plans, governments - accesses tools and applications to share information in real-time. About Carefx CorporationCarefx supports healthcare organizations in achieving their vision of advancing the quality and safety of patient care delivery through its Fusionfx solution suite. Fusionfx streamlines and simplifies clinical and business workflow and connects care providers to the information they need - where, when, and how they need it.
Report on technology companies under $100 million cites Carefxs delivery of innovative solutions for unified access and management to clinical content and data; In separate news, Carefx ranks #166 on Deloitte LLPs 2009 Technology Fast 500 SCOTTSDALE, AZ- October 28, 2009 - Carefx Corporation, a leading provider of interoperable workflow solutions to advance the quality and safety of patient care, is listed among the "Innovative Information Access Companies Under $100 Million to Watch" by IDC, a leading IT market research and advisory firm. The October 2009 study (IDC #220450), unveiled by IDC on Monday, Oct. 26, profiles companies "with the vision and technology to have an impact on the IT marketplace" and those that exemplify trends such as "unified management of and access to all information types - both data and content -across applications and repositories." Carefx was selected for inclusion in the Information Access report (IDC #220450) based on IDC's solicitation of entries from companies of less than $100 million in revenue in 2008 that exemplify trends driving change in information access markets. Analysts who cover information access software completed a first round of judging followed by a second round of judging involving IDC research executives. (Click here for an excerpt of the report.)Based on the drivers of change cited in "Worldwide Information Access, Analysis, and Management Software 2009 Top 10 Predictions" (IDC #215811), this "Companies to Watch" report (IDC #220450) alludes to typical health IT challenges such as data integration, application interoperability and government requirements for meaningful use of EMRs. It acknowledges that meaningful use depends on "architectures and solutions that facilitate unified access to healthcare data stored and maintained in a variety of formats and data types by heterogeneous applications." "Organizations have come to realize that utilizing their information assets is a key to competitive advantage, but a challenge to execute," says Henry Morris, Senior Vice President for Software and Services, IDC. "Innovative solutions are coming from a group of young companies with fresh approaches to access and manage all types of information. These innovations are having their impact on the industry and will spur technology growth in the coming years." The "Companies to Watch" report (IDC #220450) stated that Carefx's Fusionfx Solution Suite is a noteworthy strategy because it uses a graphical, role-based portal system to provide an innovative and secure way for healthcare organizations to connect and integrate data sources and applications within healthcare organizations. (IDC's "Companies to Watch" reports are a qualitative evaluation of a set of vendors within a specific market - they are not a stack ranking nor do they represent an exhaustive evaluation of all companies in a segment or a comparative ranking of the companies in the report.) Fusionfx, now in use at more than 600 organizations across North America and Europe, including The Johns Hopkins Health System, Virginia Mason Medical Center, Fletcher Allen Health Care, Boston Medical Center, Trillium Health Centre, Catholic Healthcare West and Cambridge University Hospitals, streamlines clinical and business workflow and connects providers to needed information by managing care transitions and information gaps between diverse systems, departments and facilities. In addition, Carefx is ranked #166 on Deloitte's 2009 Technology Fast 500TM, Deloitte LLP's ranking of 500 of the fastest growing technology, media, telecommunications, life sciences and clean technology companies in North America, based on percentage of fiscal year revenue growth during the five year period from 2004-2008. Carefx grew 807 percent during that period.
In conjunction with its community information exchange, BMC can easily verify required vaccinations and enter critical data to ensure patient safety for H1N1, seasonal flu and pneumovax vaccinesSCOTTSDALE, AZ- October 27, 2009 - Acknowledging the critical role of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines in ensuring the safety and efficacy of H1N1 vaccinations, Carefx Corporation, a leading provider of interoperable workflow solutions to advance the quality and safety of patient care, today announced that Boston Medical Center (BMC) has deployed the Fusionfx Immunization Management portal designed to enter and track H1N1 vaccination administration history and support broad, community-wide immunization administration tracking."Deployed in less than two weeks, the immunization management portal empowers BMC to leverage the existing consent processes and portal infrastructure of its community information exchange (CIE) to integrate vaccination information from community health centers (CHCs) and acute care facilities, and facilitate vaccination data sharing among CHCs," said Daniel Newman, M.D., BMC's Chief Medical Information Officer. "Using Carefx's solution, BMC is better able to adhere to the most appropriate H1N1 multi-dose regimen and sequence in conjunction with seasonal flu and pneumovax administration."Whether BMC patients and employees receive their H1N1, seasonal flu and pneumovax vaccinations in emergency departments, CHCs, or inpatient facilities, the Fusionfx immunization management portal enables vaccination data to be captured, integrated with CIE data and used for reporting. The portal also captures demographic, lab and workflow data, information on H1N1, seasonal flu and pneumovax vaccinations and clinical evaluation."The Fusionfx immunization management portal will help BMC professionals follow CDC guidelines related to issues such as adult and pediatric dosing and required intervals between H1N1, seasonal flu and pneumovax vaccinations at the point of care," said Qi Li, M.D., Carefx's Vice President of Clinical Strategies. "With the portal, BMC can more easily verify if patients and employees have received required vaccinations and access specifics such as vaccine lot number should safety problems emerge in the future. In addition, the Fusionfx immunization management portal meets the Immunization Information Systems goals set forth by CDC." The Fusionfx immunization management portal, which uses the same portal-based infrastructure as the Fusionfx eReferral solution that BMC deployed to manage its physician referral management process, offers both patient search and vaccination history and entry. Clinicians can search a patient by medical record number, name, age or gender. Historical vaccination information is aggregated with the CIE. The clinician can also quickly enter vaccinations administered. Immunization tracking is top-of-mind in healthcare, not just because of the prevalence of the H1N1 virus. Immunization repositories, such as the one developed by Santa Clara County, California, have the potential to decrease duplicate immunizations, support vaccine recalls and adverse events and introduce and track new vaccines. Moreover, growing numbers of health information exchanges (HIEs), including those in Louisiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and New York, are investigating immunization surveillance, as are large nations such as China where five percent of the approximately 1.3 billion-strong population are slated to receive the H1N1 vaccine by the end of 2009."The Fusionfx immunization management portal can be easily and quickly replicated in hospitals, health systems, integrated delivery networks, public health departments and HIEs," said Andy Hurd, Chairman and CEO of Carefx. "Physician executives, medical directors and materials management professionals will appreciate the value of a tool that can aggregate vaccination information from multiple sources using a common data access format."

After Two Months with eReferral from Carefx, Boston Medical Center Sees 10% Referral Volume Growth, 20% Percent Improvement in Scheduled Referrals and 5% Reduction in No-showsSCOTTSDALE, AZ - Aug. 11, 2009 - Carefx Corporation, a leading provider of interoperable workflow solutions that advance the quality and safety of patient care, today announced the availability of eReferral, its portal-based referral management solution that enables hospitals, IDNs and HIEs to establish a streamlined, patient-centric and highly accountable process for tracking referrals. The eReferral solution enhances collaboration among physicians and patients and boosts revenues at a time of declining reimbursement. The referral process can become difficult, inefficient and confusing for patients and clinicians. Patients sometimes fail to receive appropriate care, clinicians grow increasingly frustrated over the lack of timely, complete referral information, and hospitals and clinicians lose revenue due to missed appointments or inaccurate documentation. A study in the journal Pediatrics noted that primary care physicians (PCPs) who receive referral information provide optimum care in 96 percent of cases while those who receive no information deliver the best care only 35 percent of the time."Automation of the patient referral process, more often a disjointed and cumbersome workflow, is a critical capability of a clinical portal or HIE solution," said Barry Runyon, Research Vice President at Gartner Healthcare Providers. "It is of particular value when it leverages existing hospital, physician and payer systems and has strong tracking and reporting capabilities."Part of Carefx's Fusionfx suite of workflow solutions, eReferral transforms the onerous, bureaucratic, paper-shuffling referral process into a disciplined workflow that facilitates and standardizes collaboration, improves patient care quality and safety and increases referral volume and revenues. Referral Revenues Projected To IncreaseBoston Medical Center (BMC), named one of America's Best Hospitals by U.S. News and World Report, leverages eReferral to provide its 1,500 clinicians with composite views of relevant patient information housed in diverse systems. Clinicians and referral coordinators can find specialists, book appointments online, transmit clinical data and track referrals from beginning to end through BMC's unified eReferral portal. Since going live with the product in May, BMC has surpassed 1,000 referrals and continues to add approximately 100 referrals per day. In addition, BMC has already realized a significant return on investment (ROI), resulting in a net 20 percent improvement in scheduled referrals, net 5 percent reduction in no-shows, 10 percent referral volume growth and is projected to generate an additional $7 million annually, based on preliminary ROI analysis.
"eReferral has helped our patients obtain appropriate, hassle-free care, and our resource utilization has been optimized due to a decrease in missed clinic appointments," said Meg Aranow, Vice President and Chief Information Officer at BMC. "Quality, safety and physician satisfaction have increased, and the system architecture will serve as a foundation for other collaborative messaging between physicians in the community and the specialty clinics at the hospital."Built on the Fusionfx portal framework, eReferral manages outpatient and inpatient referring physician communications. The eReferral solution includes:
