We are going to Spain, in December, flying into Malaga and staying in Mijias for nine days. We're planning on siteseeing all around Costa del Sol. Should we rent a car through Expedia? We booked our flight through them because the outgoing flight from Malaga was later with them than through the airline. Or, is there a better/cheaper way to do it? We have traveled many times and I have always checked with this forum before we go.THANK YOU for your suggestions!"

Car hire costs are on the increase. A recent survey by price comparison website, Travelsupermarket, says a week's hire of a small, economy car this Easter in the popular holiday destinations of Malaga, Alicante and Palma is two-thirds more expensive than last year, averaging a rise from about £85 to nearly £140 per week.

Car hire companies blame the price rise on demand outstripping supply. Most have cut back on their fleets due to the poor economic climate, but in some destinations this means there simply aren't enough vehicles to go around.

So how can you keep car hire costs to a minimum? As my price comparison table shows, brokers such as Holiday Autos and Holiday Cars Direct can usually offer the best deals by negotiating rates with local or international car hire companies. Their online quotes are likely to be the most competitive. Airlines and tour operators may also be a good bet since they usually have an agreement with one of the international car hire firms. You can sometimes get a cheaper deal through links on their websites, than by contacting the car hire providers direct, but these prices are still unlikely to match those offered by the brokers....

"I want to take a day trip to Gibraltar from Malaga. I will be there early November and do not want to rent a car. Does anyone have a suggestion about tour company or car/driver hire? I understand it is is better to go only to the border and walk across and take a local tour. Is there bus service form the city to the border?

Though there are frequent buses from the south coast to Seville and Granada, the only way to really explore all the Costa del Sol region has to offer, is with a car rental.

Malaga Airport, a two-and-a-half to three hour flight from most parts of the UK, is about 9km from the city centre and acts as the pick-up point for most car hire companies. " We are planning to timeshare in Portugal (Algarve) for 1 week then in Spain (Costa del Sol) for the next week. We want to rent a car in Portugal and travel to Spain with it then turn it in at the Malaga airport.

Has anyone done this? How easy/difficult is it to take a rental car from Portugal into Spain? How much, if any, is the drop-off charge? Any information would be greatly appreciated."

"Hi all,

I was wondering if you could help me out. I have been to Malaga airport many times as we own an apartment down near Marbella, but I cant for the life of me work out the answer to my question!!

Bascially its about car hire. I want to hire a car for me and my g/f for our stay. I will do this the usual way of collecting from downstairs at the airport, and we will get a small car. However, she will then return to the UK after about 2.5 weeks, and then some friends will be joining me. Unfortunately, my friends are rather big chaps, so I will need a bigger car. My question is, if I was to return my first hire car the usual way and then say good bye to my girlfriend, how will I get to the car hire bit downstairs again to get my new car, as I wont have come through the arrivals lounge. I dont fancy the idea of sneaking past the sliding doors where the taxi people wait incase I look a little dodgy! Is there another way of getting there?

"Up to now we've been travelling to Granada airport with Monarch..... wonderful, no car hire queues, everything nice and easy, but now Monarch have cancelled the LGW/GRX route, we're having to fly to Malaga from Gatwick. We've also been using CarJet but now they've started charging for a full tank of fuel, and the queues for AurigaCrown and EuropaGoldCar are horrendous, we're looking for alternatives.

Apart from CarJet, what are the options for:
a no-excess insurance,
pay for what you use fuel policy,
and little or no queuing.

I suspect, by definition, there isn't one that fits all, but what are the best options?"

"Over the past year I have been a regular user of the CarJet website when booking car rental for Malaga Airport. Every time I have been given a car from Auriga Crown. The cars are always good and the service is quick when dropping back off. It appears that this christmas Auriga Crown are out of cars at Malaga so I can't collect there so I have to make my way to their office in Marbella.

For future reference, does anyone use any of the other rental desks at Malaga and if so, which can you recommend?

"We are arriving in Malaga in November by Cruise Ship. We have less than 9 hours in port and want to go to Granada to see the Alhambra, without going on the ship's buss. We would either like to have a private guide and car or rent a car at the port so we can get on the road immediately. Everything we find is either at the airport or the trian station. Does anyone have any suggestions of either a car rental company at the port or a private tour guide who is reliable and knowledgeable. Thanks"
