En août, juste avant la sortie de mon nouveau livre La jupe en jean aux éditions la plage, j'ai publié une série de petits billets sur Instagram et Facebook pour vous montrer quelques astuces qui vont vous aider à bien coudre votre jupe. Je les ai rassemblé ici, en ordre de publication, question de tous les avoir sous la main. Si vous avez des questions, des commentaires pertinents ou si vous voyez des coquilles, je les poserai ici. In August, right before my new book came out, I published a serie of tips and tricks to help sewing my skirt on FB and IG. Here's the entire collection in order of publication.

Vous savez le petit arrêt sur les fermetures invisibles ? Je les utilise rarement parce que je prends toujours une fermeture plus grande, je coupe et je fais une propreté avec du biais, c'est plus doux. Mais je les garde parce que quand je monte une braguette et que je me rate quand j'enlève les arrêts du haut (y'en a de plus difficile que d'autres) ben j'utilise ceux-ci.

You know these zipper stops on invisible zips? I hardly ever use them as I always use longer zips, cut them and fold some bias to close them so they don't scratch. But I keep the stops because, when I sew up zipper flies and make a mess of removing the stops (some of them are harder to remove than others), I use those.

Pour réussir vos surpiqûres, testez les pieds presseurs livrés avec votre machine. Ici, j'utilise un pied S et un pied O et j'ai mémorisé les réglages, ma @janomefrance #mc6700p me permet de le faire, mais sinon notez tout sur un post-it.

To ace your top-stitching, test all the presser feet that came with your machine. Here, I'm using the @janome_europe S and O feet and I've memorized the settings but you can write them down on a post-it if your machine doesn't do that.

Pendant la construction de votre jupe, vous aurez à démarrer plein de coutures avec des épaisseurs. Pour éviter de faire du sur place, assurez-vous que votre pied est bien horizontal. Pliez un bout de tissu ou, c'est joli sur les photos, utilisez les brides que vous avez préparé mais pas encore coupé et calez votre pied avec.

During construction of your jeans skirt, you'll have to start quite a few thick stitches. If you want that to go smoothly, make sure your foot is level. Fold a random piece of fabric or, it makes pretty pictures, use the belt loops you've sewn up but not cut and wedge that behind the foot.

Pour les surpiqûres, j'utilise des aiguilles machine pour surpiqûres et de l'extra-fort polyester. Vous voyez la différence de taille du chas entre une aiguille jeans 90 et une aiguille surpiqûre en photo 2? Eh ben ça aide vraiment à avoir un beau résultat.

For topstitching, I use special topstitching needles and polyester thread. Do you see the difference between a regular 90 jeans and a topstitching needle eye in picture 2? Well, it helps getting a good result.

Le problème de l'extra-fort, c'est que le choix de coloris est limité. Quand je veux une autre couleur que celles disponibles, je remplis une canette supplémentaire, je sors le truc pour faire des coutures avec les aiguilles doubles, j'enfile normalement et je passe les 2 fils dans le chas de l'aiguille à surpiqûres. Il faut vraiment être proche pour voir la différence.

The problem with top-stitching thread is that the choice of colour is limited. If I want another colour than the ones available, I fill another bobbin, set the thingamajig to use the twin needle, thread the machine normally and pass both threads in the needle eye. You have to get really close to tell the difference.

Quand la surpiqûre est moche, vraiment moche s'entend, je ne cherche pas la perfection, il faut refaire. Paresseuse que je suis, je vais refaire que le bout qui ne me plaît pas, pas toute la couture. Je coupe au milieu, défait la partie incriminée sans couper les fils, passe les fils entre les couches de tissu, fait un petit noeud, démarre ma couture point dans point, passe mes fils à l'intérieur, puis refais un petit noeud.

When the top-stitching is too ugly, I mean very ugly, I'm not shooting for perfection, I redo. But, I'm lazy, I'll only redo the part that needs to be redone, not the whole seam. I cut right in the middle of the part that needs redoing, unpick but don't cut the thread, pass the threads in between the fabrics, tie a knot, redo the seam, pass the threads inside and knot in between.

La partie que nos machines détestent le plus, c'est la pose des passants. Si lors de vos tests votre MàC vous fait des misères, il y a des solutions : ci-haut, un zigzag 3 points, largeur 7 longueur 0 et en bas, un zigzag normal avec un fil assorti à votre fil de surpiqûres et une aiguille fine style 70/80. Quelle que soit votre solution, rappelez-vous de mettre votre pied presseur horizontal en repliant un bout de tissu derrière.

The part our machines don't like is to sew up the belt loops. If, when testing, your machine acts up, try these solutions : on top, a 3 step zigzag, 7 width 0 length, at the bottom, zigzag with normal thread matching your topstitching one with a fine, 70/80 needle. Whatever your solution, remember to prop up the back of your presser foot to level it up.

Si vous craignez toujours les épaisseurs, surjetez une seule marge de couture, dégarnissez celle du dessous, couchez la marge surjetée dessus puis faites vos surpiqûres.

If you still think your fabric is too thick, serge one seam, trim the other one, fell the serged seam over the trimmed one and topstitch as per usual.

Toujours à la chasse d'épaisseurs à éliminer ? Pensez aux ourlets. Avant de surpiquer, dégarnissez le surjet juste au dessus du pli et ouvrez la couture au fer.

Reducing some more thick seams? Think about your hems. Before topstitching, trim the serged seam right above the fold and press open.

Pour faire un ourlet bien droit, utilisez votre guide de matelassage. (Ici, je surpique la patte de boutonnage de la version B). Il est vendu avec plein de machines, mais on ne l'utilise jamais.

To sew a really straight hem, use your quilting guide (here, I'm top-stitching the button band of the B skirt). It's sold with most machines but we never use it.

Vérifiez votre ouvrage pendant toute la construction. Posez vos pièces l'une sur l'autre et faites une petite vérification. Les poches de la même taille, sont au même endroit, les coutures s'alignent, les devants sont de la même longueur. Photo 4 oups! C'est plus facile de faire des petits ajustements en cours de route que de devoir tout refaire à la fin.

Check your work throughout the construction. Place your completed pieces one against the other and double check : pockets are the same size, pocket placement is mirror, seams align, front length is the same. Photo 4 oups! It's much easier to make small adjustments throughout than needing a big fix at the end.

On cherche toujours des épaisseurs à éliminer. Sur la version avec patte de boutonnage, on va marquer le ourlet au fer, coudre le bas de la patte en prenant bien soin de vérifier que les 2 devants sont bien de la même longueur, on va réduire la marge, retourner puis surpiquer. Quand c'est possible, j'essaie de faire le ourlet pendant la construction parce que j'aime pas trop ça faire les ourlets.

We are still looking for excess fabric to trim. On the version with the button band, we're going to mark the hem, sew the bottom of it after we've verified that the fronts are both the same length, trim, turn and top stitch. Whenever possible, I try to hem during construction because I don't like hemming much.

Toujours à la recherche d'épaisseurs à éliminer ? A la fente de la jupe droite, si vous pensez que votre machine va tousser, pliez le ourlet à 45 et surpiquez. Pour ne pas que ça bouge, j'ai fait un point de zigzag triple largeur 7mm longueur 0, mais un peut faire un petit point main invisible.

Still chasing some thick seams? In the back slit of the straight skirt, if you think your machine is going to have a fit, fold the top of the hem at 45 and topstitch. I secured it with a 3step zigzag at 7mm width 0mm length, but you can very quickly close it up with an invisible hand tack.

Dégarnir encore. Avant de refermer la ceinture, il faut réduire toutes les marges à 0,5cm. On pourrait aussi cranter, mais si on laisse 1cm de marge près de la boutonnière, ça va vous créer des misères pour la broder sur certaines machines. Dégarnissez franchement, comme vous passez une surpiqûre après, ça ne va pas bouger au lavage.

More trimming! Before closing up the belt with topstitching, trim all the margins to 0,5cm (+/- 1/4"). I could instruct to clip, but you'll run into trouble on some machines when you embroider the buttonhole because of all the fabric left there. Trim instead, since you'll be topstitching the belt, it'll stay put through very many washes.

La jupe droite, version A, est vraiment très droite à partir de la hanche. Si vous préférez une forme plus "crayon", descendez d'une taille au ourlet.

Version A is very straight. You can peg it by going down a size at the hem.

Dans le livre, je ne le mentionne pas, la couture dos peut être ajustée pour mieux épouser votre cambrure plus ou moins prononcée. Plus prononcée, ajoutez 1 ou 2 cm de marge à la coupe pour pouvoir ajuster, moins prononcée rabotez la courbe. Dois-je vous dire que c'est une modif à faire avant de surpiquer la couture dos? Une fois le devant terminé et la couture dos finie, bâtissez la jupe et faites un essayage. Ajustez puis cousez. Notez tout sur votre patron.

There is an adjustment to the back seam you can do to your skirt that I don't talk about in the book. Depending on your curvature, you may want to adjust: more curvature, add 1 or 2cm to the back seam when you cut the fabric, less flatten it by tracing across the curve. Need I tell you that you need to do that before you topstitch? Once the front and the back seam are done, baste, adjust, sew and note the amendments on your paper pattern.

Une des variations possible est de faire la version B avec une braguette. Il suffit d'aligner le milieu devant et de la tracer. Dans le livre, la braguette est côté fille, mais si vous préférez côté "boyfriend" lisez les instructions de montage en inversant la droite et la gauche.

You can make the fly on the B skirt. Just align the center seams and trace it. In the book, the instructions are for a girl's fly front but if you want a boyfriend one, just switch left and right.

Il y a bien longtemps, quand je bloggais souvent, j'ai fait mon premier jeans et j'ai mis en ligne un tutoriel sur une manière alternative de faire une poche gousset copiée sur un pantalon du commerce. C'est joli, inhabituel et toujours d'actualité.

Way back when I was blogging a lot, I made my first pair of jeans and I wrote a tutorial on an alternative way to make a coin pocket that I copied on a RTW pant. It's still pretty and unusual.

Je n'ai plus de problème de boutonnière depuis que j'ai un pied avec une plaque d'entraînement. Si ce n'est pas votre cas, rappelez-vous qu'il faut que votre pied soit parfaitement horizontal pour que le tissu et le pied soient bien entraînés par les griffes.

Voici quelques trucs à essayer

1- réduisez les marges le plus possible à l'endroit où la boutonnière va être brodée,

2- calez votre pied avec des chutes sur les côtés,

3- dessous, parfois quelques épaisseurs de stabilisateur à broder m'ont bien aidé,

4- certaines machines ne peuvent pas broder de boutonnière avec de l'extra-fort, utilisez un fil normal,

5- ne paniquez pas, ça se répare et vous pouvez corriger le tir en utilisant un petit zigzag.

I haven't had an issue with buttonhole since I got a foot with a plate. If that's not your case, remember that in order for the fabric and the foot to all move as one, the entire foot needs to be level.

Here are a few things you can try

1-reduce the margins on that area,

2- prep up the foot with tiny strips on the side,

3- I have had success with some tear away machine embroidery stabiliser under the area,

4-some machines will not make buttonholes with top-stitching thread, use a regular,

5- don't panic, you can fix things with a small zigzag.

Votre machine a mangé la boutonnière? Pas de panique. Enlevez le fil, faites un test de zigzag avec le pied standard, mettez un petit bout de stabilisateur de broderie derrière et zigzaguez. C'est pas beau, mais boutonné, ça n'a se voit pas et ça ne s'effilochera pas. (Une boutonnière a été détruite pour cette démonstration)

The machine ate your buttonhole? Don't panic. Remove the thread, test the zigzag with the regular foot to get the same width and length, cut a piece of stabiliser and zigzag away. It's not pretty but buttoned up it won't show. (A perfectly good buttonhole was destroyed for this demonstration)

La fente version A. Pour certaines personnes ça passe mieux en photo. (Sur le patron, les marges de la fente sont plus larges, j'avais oublié 😊)

1- Coudre jusqu'à la marque, faites un a/r et augmentez votre point à 5mm pour bâtir la fente,

2- crantez les 2 marges à la marque,

3- pressez la couture vers la droite, ouvrez la fente et repliez la marge droite de la fente,

4- surjetez les marges de droites et la fente gauche,

5- surpiquez tout du long (incluant la marge repliée en 3),

6- pliez en 2 la marge de gauche au fer,

7- surpiquez puis,

8- couchez-la sur la marge de droite,

9- faites un point bourdon pour maintenir les marges en place,

10-enlevez le bâti.

The back vent is quite simple. For some people, pictures are better (on the pattern the vent margins are bigger, I forgot 😊).

1- Sew up the back seam to the mark, back tack and then machine baste the rest with a 5mm stitch, 2- clip the margins at the mark, press to open the vent margins.

3- fold and press the right margin in 2,

4- overlock the seam and the left vent,

5- topstitch the seam and the folded vent all the way down,

6- fold and press the left margin,

7- topstitch it,

8- place it over the right margin,

9- tack it,

10- remove the basting stitch.

Groupez votre ouvrage. C'est un peu fastidieux de changer de fil tout le temps pour faire les surpiqûres donc faites toute la jupe en même temps. Faites toutes les poches et les passants, surpiquez, travaillez le devant et le dos, surpiquez, etc etc. Si vous avez une 2e machine, c'est le grand luxe.

Regroup. It's a pain to change thread all the time to topstitch so work all the elements at the same time, do all the pockets, topstitch, assemble the front and the back at the same time, topstitch etc etc If you have 2 machines, it's all the more luxurious.

Voilà voilà! Amusez-vous bien! / This is is for now, have fun!

C'est pas beau ça? Je suis trop contente de vous montrer comment faire.

C'est une méthode qui traîne dans les tréfonds d'Internet depuis un moment et que je rêvais d'utiliser, j'ai acheté un livre juste parce que cette poche figurait en couverture, j'ai lu des bouquins industriels. Ça à l'air à de la magie, mais non, c'est pas magique du tout. Je l'ai fait à ma sauce pour cet ouvrage en particulier et je vous invite à l'adapter à votre projet vous aussi.

It’s been around for a while as attested by this very old (in Interweb years) post I first saw about it. I have read up on industry sewing about this as well. I also bought this book just because of the pocket on the cover. I truly thought you needed some kind of superpower to sew this, but you don’t. I have hacked these different methods to sew up this particular project, please feel free to change things up and make it relevant to your project.

Nous allons avoir besoin d'une pièce de doublure supplémentaire (celle du milieu sur la photo). Elle fait la hauteur de la poche plus 1cm.

We'll need one more lining piece (it's the one in the middle). It measures the height of the pocket plus 1cm (3/8").

J'ai fait un gabarit en photocopiant la pièce de patron sur du bristol, enlevé les marges de couture de 1cm sur le pourtour et coupé aux marques de pliure en haut.

I made a template by photocopying the pocket pattern piece on light cardboard and removing the 1cm margins all around and on the fold line on top.

J'ai entoilé le haut de la poche et cousu la doublure d'une seule traite (contrairement au livre où il faut laisser une petite ouverture). J'ai ouvert et dégarni la couture, pressé la pliure.

I interfaced the top of the pocket and sewn it to the lining. I opened and trimmed the seam, then pressed at the foldline.

J'ai pressé la marge de la pièce de doublure supplémentaire un chouïa plus courte que la poche.

I pressed the extra lining's margin a tiny bit smaller than the pocket.

J'ai bâti les 3 pièces ensemble à la machine à grand points.

I machine basted the 3 layers with a long stitch.

J'ai formé la poche à l'aide du gabarit et beaucoup de vapeur en tirant sur le fil de bâti dans les coins pour faire une belle courbe au besoin.

I pressed the pocket into shape with the template and a lot of steam, pulling on the basting stitches in the corners when needed to make them nice and round.

J'ai bâti la poche en place avec un très grand zigzag à la tension un peu lâche, en prenant soin de prendre toutes les épaisseurs. Ça n'a pas besoin d'être super précis.

I basted the pocket into place with a very large zigzag with lower tension, trying to catch all the layers. It doesn't need to be very precise.

Ecartez bien la poche, notre but, c'est de rentrer dans la poche et de coudre dans la marge des trois épaisseurs avec un pied à fermeture. C'est difficile à photographier.

Open up the pocket, our aim is to sew the three layers in the margin with a zipper foot. It's hard to photograph.

C'est ici la partie délicate, j'ai cousu la poche dans la marge en suivant le zigzag. Il ne faut pas coudre sur le pli directement mais légèrement dans la marge. Allez tout doux dans la courbe.

Here is the delicate part... with a zipper foot, I sewed the pocket in the margin following the zigzag stitch. Don't sew right in the fold, but rather a tad inside in the margin. Go slowly to pass the curve.

Voici de quoi ça à l'air à l'intérieur de la poche une fois cousu, on voit le bâti machine, la couture, le pli au fer et le zigzag en blanc.

Avant de presser, enlever tous les fils du zigzag.

Before pressing, remove all the zigzag basting stitches.

J'ai dégarni le renfort de couture facultatif que j'ai mis à l'épisode 6.

Pretty bindings with difficult fabrics / Ganser avec des tissus difficiles

J'ai un projet dont je ne peux vous dévoiler la teneur qui demande un métrage incalculable de coutures gansées. Il y a plusieurs manières de ganser des coutures, ça dépend de votre tissu, de votre biais, si vous le voulez lavable en machine ou pas, de votre équipement (si vous avez un pied pose-biais, ce tuto est inutile)...

Comme dans tous les projets dont je ne peux vous révéler la teneur, je fais beaucoup de recherche et dans un vieux grimoire millésimé, il y était illustré, entre autres, cette manière de ganser les coutures que j'ai trouvé géniale. Maintenant que j'ai beaucoup d'entraînement, je peux vous en faire part.

J'aime cette méthode parce qu'on peut utiliser des tissus légers et glissants : ci-haut, de la doublure, ci-bas de la viscose.

I have a project I can't tell you about which needs an inordinate amount of bound seams. There are a lot of methods for binding seams, it depends on your fabric, on your bias binding, if you are going to machine wash or not, on your equipment (if you have a binding foot this tutorial is moot!)...

As with all my secret projects, I do a lot of reserch and in an old vintage grimoire there was an illustration of this method, amongst others, which I thought was brilliant. Now that I have a lot of practice, I can share.

I like this method because you can use light and slippery fabric : photo above, lining and photos below rayon.

Prenez votre tissu à ganser sur l'endroit, c'est très important de faire la première couture sur l'endroit, et le biais de 4mm plié en deux et pressé. Si vous avez besoin de faire une très grande quantité de biais, je vous recommande la méthode de Kenneth D King décrite ici.

Take your fashion fabric on the right side, it's very important to make the first seam on the right side, and the 4mm bias folded and pressed in two. I you need to cut a lot of bias binding, I recommand Kenneth D King's method described here.

Coudre le biais plié sur l'endroit de votre ouvrage à 6mm, c'est le moment de sortir votre pied 1/4" pour plus de précision. Ouvrir au fer.

Sew the folded binding on the right side at a 1/4", this is the moment to use your 1/4" foot for precision. Press open.

Epingler le biais replié dans la couture.

Pin in the ditch

Vérifiez que vous avez pris toutes les épaisseurs.

Verify that you've pinned all the layers.

Surpiquez en veillant bien à prendre toutes les épaisseurs (il faut rouler un petit peu avec les doigts et le tenir à plat, c'est le petit tour de main à prendre).

Topstitch making sure you all the layers get caught by the machine (you have to roll the bias with your fingers a bit and press it down, it's the little knack you have to figure out).

Voilà, côté endroit, c'est super beau, côté envers c'est moins beau mais c'est propre.

Here, on the right side it's all pretty, on the wrong side, it's not as pretty but it's clean.

Le résultat est tout fin, élégant et régulier.

Ease into motherhood

We invite you to share how you still dedicate time to care for yourself. We invite you to share how sewing is a part of your life through the journey."

When Montserrat reached me to talk about how sewing fit into my motherhood, I felt I had nothing to contribute. I almost didn't have children. I couldn't make them. I don't know anything about small children and babies. There were no changes in my body, hardly any in my life, I slept most nights.

My child came in the guise of a fully formed, living, breathing, running, vaccinated, though very small, 4 year old boy I'd seen for 2 years in very sad pictures where he never smiled. We adopted him.

Adoption is a process where every bit and corners of your mental, physical, financial and marital health are examined by total strangers and commented on. It's brutal. Adopting is not a decision you take privately with your partner. A committee of people you've never met and never will see again gets to make that decision for you.

When all of this is done in your country of residence, you get to go through it all over again in the country you adopt from.

So you wait.

You wait for the permission to adopt, you wait for an agency or an orphanage to take on your case, you wait for a pairing and when that happens, you wait for the paperwork to come through on the other side. Each day, is another bit of wasted time which you don't spend with the sad little child you see in the pictures. It's heart breaking.

In our case, the whole process took 7 years. There were 22 months between the time we saw him for the first time and the day we flew in to take his hand. For 9 of those we were the parents legally, but couldn't get him out of the country.

This is enough waiting time for anyone to go bonkers get depressed and drop the ball.
I didn't want my child to think that all we did was wait. We built a house pretty much ourselves, we travelled, my husband took on rollerblading competitively, he got into falconry big time and I sewed...and sewed....and sewed... and thus we kept sane.

Lucky me, it coincided with broadband, the rise of sewing blogs, boatloads of tutorials and information previously unavailable to home sewers who would, very kindly, answer your questions when you asked, blessed souls you all are. I ate all of it up, made friends who speak the same language, made dresses upon dresses upon jackets and coats and pants and skirts and bags each time learning something new. When I flew over to meet him, my luggage was brimming with handmade stuff.

"Are you ready?" I said when I extended my hand. "Yes" he said with a small voice as he took it. Thus began our adventure.

Epilogue :

This was ten years ago. Like any good delivery, you forget the pain.
I still don't sew for my son much, his growth is exponential, it's not worth the time and effort, but I do some special orders. I made friends all over the world which I'm immensely grateful for. I won the French Sewing Bee S1 3 years ago and I sew for a living. None of this would have happened without all the "sewing while you wait" I did back then.
I count my blessings everyday.

Cashmerette's Springfield

My secret sewing life, apart from the sailing stuff, involves some pattern testing.

I do it rarely but I consider it a part of my sewing geek make up, I like to help and I like to see how people resolve their problems (the sewing ones) and this way, see how patternmaking and silhouettes differ from one patternmaker to another, learning about fitting along the way. It also allows me to test different shapes that I wouldn't naturally go to if I was choosing the pattern. There is always a little bit of serendipity involved, I'll say yes if I have about a day, I have the right fabric to make a working muslin or a final garment and I have paper, glue and tape at the ready.

When Jenny from Cashmerette called up for the Springfield, I said yes right away. All the conditions cited above were reunited and there are only a couple of nice flowy light summer tops here in the house of dresses or t-shirts and nothing in between.

C'est rare, mais je considère que ça fait partie de mon apprentissage de geek de la couture, j'aime ça donner un petit coup de main, j'aime voir comment les autres résolvent leurs problèmes (de couture s'entend) et voir comment les silouhettes changent d'un patronnier à l'autre, tout en apprenant à faire les ajustements nécessaires. Ça me permet aussi d'essayer des nouvelles silhouettes vers lesquelles je ne me tournerais peut-être pas naturellement. Ceci dit, il faut que les conditions soient réunies pour que je dise oui, il faut que j'aie un jour, que j'aie le bon tissu ou des chutes pour faire une toile, portable si possible, et une quantité suffisante de papier, colle et scotch.

Quand Jenny de Cashmerette a fait appel à moi pour le Springfield, j'ai dit oui tout de suite. Toutes les conditions citées ci-haut étaient réunies et en plus, des petits tops légers pour l'été, ça manque ici, maison de la robe ou du t-shirt et rien entre les deux.

I made a 12C/D version A without the side slits (I forgot them!). This is a modified tester version. I liked it and wanted to wear it so I changed the darts' placement (which stretched the pointy bit and polyester simply won't get fixed with steam so it's not optimal but I have done worst). The pattern Jenny is going to sent you is going to be different as the darts have been corrected, she raised the neckline and made it a little longer (this length is fine for me, but I'm short). It's quite a straightfoward make and very beginner friendly.

Since making it, it's been wash/wear, wash/wear, no ironing needed. I should make more... and longer it would make a great travel dress...another one!

J'ai fait un 12C/D version A sans les fentes (je les ai oubliées!). Ensuite je l'ai modifié pour qu'il soit portable alors j'ai changé le placement des pinces poitrine (ça a étiré le tissu à cet endroit et comme c'est du polyester, je n'ai pas été capable de le corriger à la vapeur, c'est pas le summum, mais j'ai fait pire). Le patron que Jenny va vous envoyer est un peu différent : les pinces ont été corrigées, l'encolure remontée et le patron a été allongé (c'est pas véritablement un problème pour moi, je suis très petite). Il est très simple à faire et très bien pour les débutantes.

Depuis que je l'ai fait, je lave/porte, lave/porte sans repassage. Je devrais en faire plus... et plus long, ça ferait une super robe de voyage... une autre!

C'est encore une longue histoire.
Je connais Catherine depuis très longtemps. On travaillait ensemble, littéralement une par dessus l'autre, à Roland Garros. On a gardé le contact via les réseaux sociaux habituels où on a une petite societé d'admiration mutuelle : elle est toujours la première à m'encourager et me féliciter et je fais de même quand elle court dans un de ces incroyables marathons d'ultrafond, je ne pourrais pas être plus admirative.

Catherine and I worked together for years at The French Open quite literally one on top of the other (this is going to make her laugh). We keep a mutual admiration society in habitual networks where she is often first to cheer and encourage which I return when she enters one of her incredible ultramarathons, I couldn't admire her more.

Vous ne me croirez jamais, mais j'ai hésité. La maison mère de RAGT Semences est à Rodez (sud), Valentine, porteuse de la robe, à Paris (centre du monde) et moi en Bretagne (ouest), la logistique des déplacements nécessaires pour les 3 essayages serait compliquée et hors budget.

Je n'ai pas pu laisser cette mission à quelqu'un d'autre. C'est le p'tain de Tour de France! On ne dit pas non au Tour de France, on trouve des solutions!

She messaged me in March, saying that she was in a bind, the local seamstress had pulled out and that I was the only person she knew who could help. Could I recommend someone or would I be interested in making two identical Tour de France prize giving dresses? Me?
Beleive you me, I did hesitate. RAGT Semences is in Rodez (south), Valentine wearer of the said dress is in Paris (center of the world) and I'm in Bretagne (west) and coordination alone was going to be expensive and the budget too tight for schlepping peeps all over France for the 3 fittings needed.

Aaaah!

I couldn't let anyone else do that job. It's the freaking Tour de France! You don't say no to the Tour de France, you find solutions!

Les consignes étaient "simples". Reconnaissable instantanément, aux couleurs de la marque, vert, rouge et blanc, moderne, jeune, féminine, classe, au dessus du genou mais pas trop, pas de fente devant, pas trop serrée, la robe devait se prêter au voyage, être lavable et presque infroissable. Catherine et Fabrice son patron, avaient les robes LCL en tête comme exemple.

The instructions were "simple". Instantly recognisable, brand colours green, red and white, modern, young, feminine, classy, above the knee but not too high, no front slit, not too tight, the dress had to be travel ready, easily washable and almost wrinkle free. They, Catherine and Fabrice her boss, listed LCL's sheath dress as a favorite.

Je leur ai envoyé des petits coloriages pour commencer la discussion. Je dessine comme une enfant de 6 ans alors j'ai pris des dessins techniques existants. D'une manière ou d'une autre, developper un modèle exclusif sans mannequin était, pour les raisons budgétaires énoncées ci-haut, hors de question. Avec une base existante, je pouvais travailler en étant loin.

I sent them a few colourings so we could start talking. I draw like a 6 years old, so I coloured existing technical drawings. Also, developing a pattern from scratch without a model on hand was out of the question for the logistic reasons cited above. With an existing framework, I could work from afar.

Ils ont choisi la n°7 et on a parlé un peu plus. J'ai suggéré que le liséré s'ouvre sur un pli creux bicolore façon Demoiselles de Rochefort. J'ai aussi suggéré qu'une base écru, plus facile à photographier et à filmer, serait plus élégante (voir photo ci-haut ou l'écru est blanc et le blanc reflète toute la lumière). Puis j'ai fais le tour des popotes et commandé des échantillons. J'ai trouvé un beau crèpe de polyester lourd dans les 3 coloris de la marque chez Midlands Textiles.

They chose number 7 and then we talked some more and I suggested that the piping could open up on an inverted pleat in the manner of The Young Girls of Rochefort. I also suggested that off white would be more elegant and camera friendly than pure white (see picture above where the off white looks white and the white white is reflecting all the light). I started ordering samples, shopping around and I found a really nice heavy polyester crepe in the three brand colours at Midland Textiles.

Et voilà, nous avions donc Vogue 8993 avec un col, passepoil et pli creux bi-couleur avec doublure Bamberg (plus cher au mètre que l'extérieur) fait sur mesure. J'ai enlevé la couture du milieu devant, creusé le décolleté un peu et après discussion avec Valentine, qui me racontait qu'il fallait faire super vite pour se changer parce qu'il n'y a pas trop la place près du podium, on a mis le zip sur le côté.

This is Vogue 8993 with two-tone collar, piping and inverted pleat. It is fully lined in Bamberg (more expensive than the fashion fabric) and made to measure. The front seam has been removed, the v-neck lowered and the zip put on the side as a discussion with Valentine revealed that she didn't really have a place to put it on near the podium so she had to act quickly, a side zip would be swell.

Il n'y a peu eu d'ajustements sauf dans le bas du dos où j'ai enlevé un peu de tissu qui faisait des petits plis.

There were very little adjustments made save for a tiny sway back.

Avec la permission de RAGT Semences, je vous ai montré quelques étapes de la construction. J'ai fait une vraie toile, on l'a ajusté, j'ai coupé puis j'ai bâti une robe entière, on l'a ajusté, on a pris les dernières décisions puis je suis rentrée à la maison pour les construire (je dois ici remercier Janome par Exact France à Paris qui m'a prêté leur salle de conférence et toutes les machines nécessaires pendant une semaine).

With RAGT Semences' permission, I posted quite a few teasers in May where you saw me make a proper muslin, we fitted that, I cut and basted a full dress, we tried that out, made a few last decisions and fitting tweeks and I came home and built them (I have to thank Janome par Exact France in Paris for lending me their meeting room and filling it with all the machines I needed for a week).

Voici un petit truc sympa pour faire ce liséré fin et régulier (Je le dois à Kenneth D King et Threads Magazine) : je ne voulais pas toutes la raideur d'un passepoil parce que la couture passe sur le sein alors j'ai fait mon passepoil avec un cordon de satin très très fin. Je l'ai cousu avec un pied spécial, j'ai retiré la corde et j'ai pressé. C'est super joli et délicat.

Here is an little tip I used to get tiny and regular piping (it's from Kenneth D King and Threads Magazine) : I didn't want bulk and stifness because the seam is right on the breast, so I made my own with tiny satin rope. I sewed it with a special piping foot, removed the rope and pressed. It's really pretty and delicate.

Je les ai bien emballées et je les ai envoyées en croisant les doigts pour qu'elles ne soient pas perdues dans la poste et que toutes ces micro décisions soient les bonnes. J'étais super nerveuse mais je ne pouvais plus rien faire sauf me faire confiance.

I packed them up and sent them off and secretly wished that they wouldn't get lost in the mail and that all the micro decisions we took were the right ones. I was super nervous but couldn't do anything about it anymore except trust myself.

Tous les jours, vers midi, j'ai une nouvelle photo de ma jolie robe en action et ça me met de bonne humeur.

C'est un honneur pour moi d'avoir fait cette robe. C'est mon petit maillot jaune de la couture.

It's a long story...are you ready?

I love this dress and I wanted to make it the mintute I saw it for several reasons. It's designed by Lisa Pahn who won The Great Swedish Sewing Bee (Hela Sverige Syr). It's a total throwback to the 70's country western vibe which I have loved since the days I started seriously thrifting and following KD Lang and the Reclines everywhere. Though not extremely complicated, it needs a great level of precision. Kwik Sew 4133's got a whopping 19 pattern pieces, it's a lot for an unlined dress, in total I cut 44 various bits of fabric and interfacing, what a puzzle!

C'est une longue histoire...vous êtes prêts?

J'ai aimé cette robe dès que je l'ai vu et j'ai voulu la faire tout de suite pour plusieurs raisons. Elle a été dessiné par Lisa Pahn la gagnante de Cousu Main Suédois (Hela Sverige Syr). C'est un flashback du temps où je courais le vintage très sérieusement et je suivais KD Lang and the Reclines partout. Bien que pas super compliquée, elle demande un bon niveau de précision. Kwik Sew 4133 a 19 pièces de patron, c'est beaucoup pour une robe qui n'est pas doublée, au total, j'ai coupé 44 pièces de tissu et d'entoilage, un beau casse-tête (un casse-tête au Québec c'est un puzzle)!

It's a well travelled project.
I started to try to pair fabric and pattern in January (I bought the fabric at Self Tissus), made a muslin for the bodice, took it to Paris to make the changes, decided on a FBA, made another muslin, took it to JrC Judo lessons where I cut the main fabric, took it to Paris, cut the contrasting one and did the prep during Shirtdress Master Class, came back home and started sewing right after my secret Tour de France project was finished.
FYI, I made the small, you should really, really check the sizing and make it according the finished measurments because I don't know when was the last time I fit into a small anything, but I do. Apart for the FBA, I changed the front placket which I made a tad larger for snaps and redesigned so it would follow the shape of the contrast pannels.

Elle a beaucoup voyagé!
J'ai commencé à associer les tissus au patron en janvier (j'ai acheté le tissu chez Self Tissus), fait une toile du corsage, l'ai amené avec moi à Paris pour travailler dessus, décidé d'un ajustement forte poitrine, fait une autre toile, l'ai prise avec moi pour couper le tissu principal pendant le judo, puis j'ai coupé les contrastes et fait la préparation à Paris pendant la Master Class Robe Chemise. Quand je suis revenue, juste après le projet secret du Tour de France, je l'ai attaqué.
Pour info, j'ai fait la small. C'est super étrange, je ne me rappelle plus quand c'est la dernière fois que je suis rentrée dans un small donc si vous la faite, regardez bien les mesures du vêtement fini. A part l'ajustement poitrine, j'ai adapté la patte de boutonnage pour accomoder les pressions et je l'ai re-dessinée en pointe pour suivre les courbes des empiècements.

Then things started to happen.

The collar was really odd. I checked the pattern pieces, the picture on the cover, I'm not ready to say it's a mistake but I didn't like it. Of course, by that time, all had been neatly trimmed, almost ready for top stitching, of course!

Puis il m'est arrivé des trucs.

Le col était super biz. J'ai bien regardé les photos de l'enveloppe, j'ai vérifié les pièces de patron, j'ai coupé la bonne taille, je ne suis pas prète à dire que c'est une erreur, mais je n'aimais pas. C'est sûr, quand j'ai décidé de refaire, toutes les coutures avaient été rognées, le sous col prêt pour les surpiqûres, c'est sûr!

To fix it, I carefully unpicked the collar for about 2" and, while still attached to the collar stand which was attached to the dress, removed 5/8" from the collar and reset it. It's not perfect, but I can live with it better. If you make it, double check your pattern pieces and correct it before cutting if that's what you want.

Pour réparer, j'ai très doucement défait le col sur 5cm, le reste encore attaché au sous-col attaché à la robe et j'ai coupé 1,5cm au col que j'ai remonté. Ce n'est pas parfait, mais c'est beaucoup mieux et je vais pouvoir vivre avec. Vérifiez bien vos pièces de patron et faites la correction avant la coupe si vous décidez de la faire.

I glue-sticked most of the contrast facings if you care to know how I have achieved such precision.

J'ai collé les empiècements avec de la colle en bâton si vous voulez savoir comme j'ai pu être aussi précise.

And then, I put it on...

...and I couldn't move, well I could but couldn't zip it up. It's something I could have caught it if I had made a muslin with sleeves. It was too late to complain about it, the dress was finished. Where was I going to go from there...

Puis je l'ai mise...

...et je ne pouvais plus bouger, bon, je pouvais bouger mais pas la zipper. C'est un truc que j'aurais vu si j'avais fait une toile avec manche, mais il était un peu trop tard pour se plaindre, la robe était terminée. Quoi faire...

... a gusset. I unpicked the underarm area and asked JrC to measure the distance between the sleeve and the bodice when I lifted my arm at 90°, and drew a football shaped thingy to fit between the front and back notches on the bias (20 pattern/46 fabric). If I make it again, I'll draft a cut on gusset. (You can check The Oveflowing Stash's Grand Gusset Experiment for more information on the subject and there is a hilarious Kenneth D King video about lift you have to see).

It was a swell work around. I can go about my daily business and lift my arms. I saved the dress.

J'ai coupé un 14 bonnet DD dans la vue C avec la jupe A, sans poser de question. La construction a été rapide, les modifications très simples, j'ai remonté de décolleté de 2,5cm et je n'ai doublé que le haut, le tissu de chez Un Chat sur un Fil (je ne suis pas certaine qu'il lui en reste...) à un fini satiné sur l'envers et n'en avait pas besoin.

I cut a 14 in the DD cup size, view C with the A skirt and ran with it. Construction was fast as there were no modifications to the pattern except I raised up the neckline about an inch and only lined the bodice, my fabric, from Un Chat sur un Fil (not sure she has some left...), is satin backed so didn't need one.

Les patrons Amazing Fit sont ingénieux car ils offrent énomément d'options d'ajustements pendant toute la construction. Vous devez construire tout le devant, tout le dos et ensuite vous assemblez les épaules et les côtés qui ont une très grandes marges de couture. Ça fait des années que je monte mes robes de cette manière, je vous le conseille fortement.

Amazing Fit patterns are very clever as they offer lots of options for fitting along the way. They have you build the whole front, the whole back and then assemble the sides which have a very large seam allowance. I have been using this order of construction for years, you should try it.

Hier, j'ai fait la liste des trucs que j'aimerais me faire cet été et j'ai pris peur. Je n'aurai jamais, jamais assez de temps pour coudre tout ça. Mais, étant de nature optimiste, je veux bien essayer d'en coudre quelques uns.

I made the list of what I'd like to sew this summer and got scared. I will never ever have the time to sew all of that. But, being of an optimist nature, I'll try to sew a few.

Maintenant la question du jour : Comment obtenir un ourlet de chemise fin et régulier? Avec un peu d'aide.

Now the question du jour : How do I get these really fine and regular shirt tail hems? With a little help.

Méthode 1 : avec mon pied quart de pouce et je trace un repère de repassage à grand points puis je marque le ourlet au fer avant de le coudre. On peut retirer le fil de repère quand on a fini. Sur un tissu de chemise fin et transparent, c'est la méthode que j'utilise.

Method one : with my quarter inch foot and a long stitch, I make a thread mark which I use to turn and press the hem before sewing. You can take the thread out after. On a light transparent shirting this is the method I use.

Méthode 2 : sur un tissu de chemise qui ne craint pas la transparence, je surjette, puis je marque au fer. C'est simple rapide et ça marche à tous les coups.

Method 2 : On thicker shirting, I serge my quarter inch then use that as my pressing tool. Simple, fast and works everytime.

Je ne suis toujours pas très confortable quand je donne des cours et cet hiver quand j'ai préparé la Master Class chemise à Paris, j'ai fait des chemises, beaucoup de cols, de fentes, de pattes, de poignets et 2 Archer de Grainline.

I still don't feel comfortable teaching so, in preparation to my shirt Master Class at Janome this winter, I made a lot of shirts, plackets, collars, wristbands and 2 Grainline Archers.

La première, je l'ai fait en taille 12 sans modifications autre que les poignets (j'avais lu quelque part qu'ils étaient grands et j'ai fait la taille 0 avec une fente comme les garçons), puis j'ai utilisé le tutoriel de Sew Maris pour faire une patte de boutonnage d'un seul tenant. Le tissu est un cadeau de Mademoiselle Camille.

I made the first one in a size 12 except for the wrist bands which I had read were too big, I made a size 0 with a tower placket, and I used Sew Maris tutorial to make a cut-on buttonhole placket. The fabric is a gift from Mademoiselle Camille.

Pour la deuxième, j'ai fait pas mal de modifications pour arriver à mes fins, particulièrement dans le haut : Col taille 6, épaule taille 10 avec emmanchures, manches et corps taille 12.

Then, I serioulsy hacked the second one to get a more flattering fit in the shoulder and collar area : Collar is a 6, shoulder width is a 10 but I kept the 12 armscye, sleeve and body.

Puis j'ai sorti ma sainte flannelle Mammoth de Robert Kaufman achetée à Boston l'an dernier et je me suis sérieusement énervée sur les raccords. I felt so much like a Canadian!

Then I got the Robert Kaufman Mammoth Flannel I bought in Boston last summer, went nuts on the pattern matching. I really felt Canadian!

Je n'ai pas véritablement besoin d'une troisième chemise de ce modèle, mais, si jamais je la refaisais, je pendrais soin de "rétablir l'assiette". Je n'ai pas fait d'ajustment forte poitrine, et le devant n'est pas parfaitement horizontal. Ce n'est pas un gros défaut et ça ne m'a certainement pas empêché de les porter tout l'hiver en toutes occasions et en bonne compagnie.

I don't really need another one, but if I was to make it again, I would level out the front. I didn't do an FBA and the front is not perfectly horizontal. It's not a huge flaw and it certainly didn't keep me from wearing them all winter and spring in all occasions and in good company.

J'adore faire des sacs!

Je n'avais pas eu l'occasion d'en faire un depuis le sac du livre Cousu Main. Ça fait un bail. J'ai vu les sacs de Laurence de Cousu Main S1 en exclusivité en septembre dernier avant la sortie de son livre "Couture Urbaine" et j'ai craqué pour l'Odéon.

I haven't made a proper handbag since the one for my Sewing Bee book, it's been a while. In September, Laurence, a contestant in S1 showed me her samples and I fell really hard for the Odéon. I waited patiently for her book "Couture Urbaine" to come out and started gathering supplies.

Pour le faire, je voulais du cuir et un copain, Christophe, m'a filé des restes qui allaient très bien avec mon wax acheté à Londres il y a 2 ans. Parce qu'il était un peu abimé à certains endroits, j'ai bougé la couture du milieu et l'ai transféré sur les côtés. Ça m'a compliqué un peu la tâche vous devez bien vous en douter car j'ai du poser les poches dans un tube. Mais c'était la bonne décision et le résultat est fantastique. Comme c'est en cuir, j'ai posé le Décovil dans la doublure et j'ai posé les anses dans les coutures parce que je n'étais pas certaine de réussir les surpîqures visibles à l'extérieur, ce sont les seules modifications que j'ai fait aux instructions.

I really wanted a leather handbag and a friend, Christophe, gave me some leftovers that matched the wax I bought in London a couple of years ago. The leather was spotty in some places so I moved the seams in the side pockets. You can guess it was a little difficult to sew the pockets in the round, but it was the right decision and the result is worth it. As it is leather, I fused the Decovil to the lining and I sewed the handles inside the seams because I wasn't sure I could nail the exterior topstitching, these are the only changes I made to the instructions.

Vous savez que j'ai une piqueuse industrielle à la maison, mais pour ce sac, j'ai choisi de tester Miuccia ma Janome 6600P et elle n'a pas bronché. Je n'ai même pas cassé une aiguille!

You all know I have a industrial straight stitcher but I wanted to put Miuccia my Janome 6600P to the test and she handled the work quite nicely. I didn't even break a needle!

Je me suis super énervée sur l'intérieur et j'ai ajouté pleins de poches pour y mettre tout mon bardas. Depuis sa confection, je ne le lâche plus.

I went a little overboard with the inside pockets but it's part of why this bag is so great. I haven't used another one since.

I don't know about you, but I find it easy to fall back on sewing the same kind of clothes.

To thwart that, I've been accepting some offers to test new patterns when my schedule allows it, and when Rachel, the community manager at Oliver + S asked if I wanted to be a panelist in the Gallery Tunic Sew Along I jumped on it. I had the fabric (a gift from Anna K Bazaar), the notions in perfectly matching fluorescent pink, all I needed was the right pattern!

I've said it, can't remember when, I've been lacking nice tops in my wardrobe and this one certainly fits the bill of stuff I need more of.

Je ne sais pas vous, mais je choisis souvent la facilité en couture et je couds souvent la même chose.

Pour contrer cette tendance ennuyeuse, j'accepte parfois de tester des patrons quand mon emploi du temps me le permet. Quand Rachel qui gère la communication chez Oliver + S m'a demandé si je voulais participer au Pas-à-Pas de la Robe Tunique Gallery, j'ai dit oui tout de suite. J'avais le tissu (un cadeau de chez Anna K Bazaar), la mercerie assortie en rose fluo, il me manquait le bon patron!

Je vous ai dit, je ne sais plus quand, que j'avais besoin de plus de petits hauts dans ma garde-robe et celui-ci représente exactement ce que je cherche.

There is a lot of good in this top and some bad. All the bad is my fault, all of it can be fixed by making another one. It's not a terribly long make, it's about a day's work and I really like the good so we will politely say that it's a wearable muslin and leave it at that.

I sewed up the dress in a size ten with a D-cup fba. I shortened it by 15cm.

Y'a plein de trucs bien dans ce haut et un peu de mauvais. Le mauvais est entièrement de ma faute et sera assez facile à corriger quand je m'en ferai un autre. Ce n'est pas super long à faire, environ une journée et j'aime beaucoup tout le bien, nous allons donc proclamer que c'est une toile portable et en rester là.

J'ai cousu la robe en taille 10 avec une augmentation pour mon bonnet D. Je l'ai racourci de 15cm.

To make it perfect, I need to go down a size in the shoulder, ease out the sleeve at the bicep a tiny bit as well as shortening it.

Elle sera parfaite quand j'aurai fait une taille en moins à l'épaule, raccourci la manche et donné un peu d'aisance au bicep.

I don't know what crummy bra I was wearing when I measured my bust point for the fba but I put it really low. Note to my lazy self : stand up when measuring and get thee a proper undergarment!

Je ne sais pas quel soutif je portais quand j'ai mesuré l'apex, mais la pince en résultant est très, très basse. Note à mon moi-même : paresseuse! on se lève quand on prend des mesures et on va chercher ses beaux sous-vêtements!

I had tremendous fun making this, the placket construction is brilliant (all pattern matching is accidental) and I totally geeked out over the small details. I had to resist the urge to top stitch everything jeans style just because I loved the contrasting fluorescent pink thread. I somewhat assuaged that by doing some decorative serging in the seam allowances.

Now on to the most difficult part of this project, my esteemed collegues, Kristi, Lori, Rachel, Sara and I have to choose a winner of the linky party and methinks it's going to be very hard, all the makes are really swell!

I love my tunic, don't mind me while go I fix that dart.

J'ai eu beaucoup de plaisir à la fabriquer, le montage de la patte est super ingénieuse (l'alignement des motifs sur celle-ci est accidentelle) et je me suis régalée dans petits les détails. J'ai du résister à l'envie de tout surpîquer comme un jeans tellement j'aimais le fil fluo rose. J'ai réussi à calmer mes envies en faisant du surjet décoratif dans les marges.

Je dois maintenant aller faire la partie vraiment difficile de ce projet, mes collègues, Kristi, Lori, Rachel, Sara et moi devons choisir une gagnante de concours et je crois que ça va être dur de choisir, les confections sont super belles!

J'adore ma tunique, ne bougez pas, je vais aller refaire ma pince.

Coucou!

Un des grands bonus d'avoir fait Cousu Main Saison 1, c'est que j'y ai rencontré des gens de grande qualité que j'ai beaucoup de plaisir à revoir. Quand Julien est venu passer quelques jours en Bretagne en début d'année, on est allé déjeuner et c'était génial.
Une des choses que vous ne savez pas c'est que virtuellement, j'avais déjà rencontré Julien car je l'avais contacter pour d'obscures questions de milanaise et de boutonnières pour le gilet de Jean-Louis (il faut lire mon humble blog depuis super longtemps pour le savoir). Lors du tournage de la première émission, je m'étais présentée en lui disant : "vous vous souvenez de la folle à qui vous aviez envoyé de la milanaise il y a quelques années? Ben c'est moi!" Je soupçonnais donc qu'il est gentil bien avant l'émission et maintenant je le sais.

Plus encore que la notoriété, rencontrer tous ces gens qui sont très passionnés par ce qu'ils font et essaient de le faire bien, je parle ici des participants mais aussi des techniciens, du réalisateur, du producteur et autres, c'est motivant. Je vous l'ai dit déjà, c'est la passion qui me motive, les miennes et celles des autres.

Hello!
One of the great joy of having been on the French Sewing Bee Season 1, is that I have met great people that I love to see again. When Julien was vacationing in Britanny in early January, we had lunch and it was great to see him again.
One of the thing you don't know, unless you've been reading this humble blog for years, is that I had virtually met Julien years ago while looking for obscure notions, gimp and handworked buttonholes for Jean-Louis' waistcoat. When I introduced myself on the first episode, I said : "do you remember that batshit woman whom you shipped gimp to years ago? It's me!" I imagined he is a really nice guy, now I know.
More than notoriety, meeting a whole lot more passionate people who do what they do best and are trying to get better, contestants, technicians, director, producer and all, is a great source of motivation for me. I have said it already, I'm am moved by passion, mine and others.

Smoothing things out, sucking it in, looking ridiculous, blogging is a tough job!

Parmis ces personnes rencontrées lors du tournage, il y a Camille.

On ne l'a pas beaucoup vu pendant l'émission, elle manquait d'heures de machine et de pratique, mais elle a une super belle énergie créatrice et je suis super heureuse pour elle, Camillette Créations c'est une petite affaire qui marche. Pour avoir testé tous ses tissus sauf le lange, je peux vous dire que ça ne bouge pas au lavage, ça ne bouloche pas, le compte fil au cm² est super élevé, c'est du pur coton, c'est un bonheur à travailler et c'est joli.

Camillette nous prépare une nouvelle surprise que j'ai bien hâte qu'elle la dévoile. Ça s'appelle My Milky Box.

Bref, j'ai reçu ses Ptits pois d'enfer, j'ai lavé, coupé et cousu mon 2ème Apollon dans la foulée. J'ai gardé la même recette que le précédent sauf que j'ai fait un 40 à l'encolure, aux épaules et aux manches et je ne l'ai plus quitté depuis. D'ailleurs j'ai fait la même modif à l'autre au niveau des épaules, c'est beaucoup mieux.

Amongst the trove of genius peeps I met on the show, there is Camille.

You didn't see a lot of her, she left early as she had only recently started sewing and lacked practice, but she has a great creative energy and she started her own business of designing and editing exclusive fabric, Camillette Creations and it's working. I have most of her fabric in stash, except the swaddling cloth, and I can vouch for the quality, hasn't shrunked in the wash, doesn't pile, has high thread count, all coton, it's a joy to sew and it's pretty.

She also is working on some secret Milky Box, I can't wait to see what's inside.

In short, I got my Ptits pois d'enfer, I washed, cut and sewed my second Apollon in one fell swoop. I used the same recipe as the first one except I made the top part in a 40 in the neckline, shoulder and sleeve area. I haven't taken it off since. I also re-worked on the shoulders of the first one, it's so much better.

Ça va être un peu mon uniforme cet hiver je pense... et mon cadeau de Noël, vous avez vu mon cadeau de Noël? J'ai ajouté une autre paire de Nike Liberty à ma collection. Je suis un peu timbrée à ce niveau... mais je ne suis pas certaine qu'il faille me soigner.

It's going to be quite this winter's uniform I think... did you see my X'mas gift? I added a new Liberty Nike to my collection. I'm hooked on them ... but I don't think I need an intervention yet.

I had quite a bunch of really nice comments about my Burda Sean's covered snaps and I promised to show you the very unorthodox workaround I used to cover them.

On va commencer l'année en piratant!

J'ai reçu pas mal de gentils commentaires sur les pressions recouvertes de mon paletot Burda Sean et j'ai promis de vous montrer la manière peu orthodoxe que j'ai utilisé.

Couture tutorial from / Tuto Haute Couture de chez Couture et Tricot

Theoritically, this picture is what I was aiming for, but in practice, my beautiful fabric just didn't do what I wanted it to do. In this case, it wouldn't kindly stretch in the female part, and the snap wasn't snapping.

En théorie, ça devait ressembler à la photo ci-haut. En pratique, mon tissu si beau, n'avait pas assez de souplesse et ne voulait pas gentiment s'étirer dans la partie femelle ce qui empêchait la pression de fonctionner correctement (on n'entendait pas le petit clic).

So I did what a resourceful girl does, I took my hole punch and made one just big enough to let the male through it and soaked it with Fray Check.

Frankly, I don't hold Fray Check in very high esteem, but it's a good last ditch solution.

Logically, if you sew with any accuracy you'll never need any. But I wanted covered snaps on my coat and my fabric wasn't behaving and it works. I haven't seen one tiny bit of fraying since November.

Alternatively, if you can't find any, you could fuse a little bit of interfacing in the middle before punching your hole it would work the same.

Alors j'ai fait ni une ni deux, j'ai pris mon emporte-pièce et j'ai fait un trou assez grand pour passer la partie mâle et j'ai imbibé le pourtour de Fray Check. Le Fray Check, c'est de la colle anti-effilochage. Avant, c'était super difficile à trouver, mais maintenant on en voit un peu partout.

Ce n'est pas un produit que je recommande pour utilisation courante, mais c'est une bonne solution de dernier recours.

En théorie, si vous cousez avec un peu de précision vous n'en aurez jamais besoin. Mais dans ce cas-ci, je n'avais pas d'autre solution et ça fonctionne. J'ai fait le manteau en novembre et je n'ai pas vu le moindre petit bout de fil se défaire

Alternativement, un petit bout d'entoilage thermocollant au milieu ferait exactement la même chose si vous ne trouvez pas le produit dans votre région.

Everytime I do something like this, I think I'll get banished from the sewing blogosphere by the French Haute Couture police. Then I laugh hysterically, they'd get chased by my goose who wouldn't let them near the door!

Cashmerette Appleton

When I was in Boston this summer, I met Jenny from Cashmerette Patterns and she told me about her project to start a plus-size pattern business. She showed me her samples for the Appleton and the Washington and we discussed sewing instructions and I was so excited for her. I do remember thinking, Jenny will tell you if I said it out loud or not, that I was right at the bottom of the size chart and could actually sew them up. Summer came and went, the Appleton was released and I started to see some very good ones.

In a bit of sewing serendipity, as I was ordering the pattern to support Jenny, GirlCharleeUk reached out to me and asked if they could send me some fabric to test. I asked for enough fabric to make an Appleton in two colourways just like Séverine's. I chose Jewel Stain Glass Chevron and a navy blue solid.

Quand j'étais à Boston cet été, j'ai rencontré Jenny de chez Cashmerette Patterns elle était en plein développement de sa marque. Elle m'a montré ses échantillons pour l'Appleton et la Washington, on a discuté instructions de couture et j'étais vraiment enthousiasmée. Je me rappelle avoir pensé que je rentrais dans sa petite taille et que je pourrais les coudre. Jenny vous dira si je l'ai dit tout fort ou pas. L'été est passé, l'Appleton est sorti et j'ai commencé à en voir de très très belles.

Coincidence, alors que je commandais le patron pour encourager Jenny, GirlCharleeUK l'antenne européenne de la célèbre maison américaine de tissu jersey, m'a écrit pour demander si je voulais bien du tissu. J'ai accepté assez de tissu pour faire la robe en 2 couleurs comme celle de Séverine. J'ai choisi Jewel Stained Glass Chevron et un uni marine. (Si vous voulez commander, le site est encore en anglais mais Mark parle assez de français pour prendre votre commande).

No gape! / Ça ne baille pas! (merci Olivier Till je suis fan!)

As I've shown you before, I did make a toile of size 12. The shoulder seam was about an inch forward on me. Usually, moving the shoulder seam is a no-brainer, but on this dress, I would have had to move it and the re-draft the collar and band and I didn't want to have to do that. So I pinched here and there to see what would happen and ended up making the strangest bit of pattern modification I have ever done : namely, making a horizontal dart accross the whole back and tapering it on the sleeve. If you ask me how come that's a fix, I won't be able to give you a definite answer. It's part because I'm short and the Cashmerette woman is tall and part because the fabric is stretchy. But hey, it works. I also went up to 14 at the waist as I am loosing definition in that area!

Comme je vous l'ai déjà dit, j'ai fait une toile pour la taille 12. La couture d'épaule était environ 2,5cm sur le devant. Habituellement, bouger une couture d'épaule n'est pas super compliqué mais sur cette robe, il fallait tout redessiner les empiècements col et devant et j'avais pas envie de faire ça. J'ai pincé ici et là et j'ai fait la modification patron la plus étrange que j'ai jamais faite : j'ai fait un pli l'horizontal dans le dos que j'ai réparti sur la manche. Si vous me demandez pourquoi ça marche, je ne pourrai pas vous répondre avec certitude : c'est en partie parce que la femme Cashmerette est plus grande que moi en en partie parce que c'est du stretch. Mais ça fonctionne, c'est ça l'important. A la taille j'ai fait un 14, j'ai perdu un peu de définition à cet endroit!

Working from home I don't really have a need for more but it's such a quick satisfying make one never knows. If I make it again, I'll lower the waist a bit so it sits at my true natural waist. It would re-establish the horizontal which as you can see is lost when crossing the ties.

The main fabric is a little light for a winter make but I wore it at the CSF trade show and had a fabulous day and lots of compliments.

The Appleton is well drafted, easy to make and you can play with fabrics and colours and textures. It's such a winner that if you Google Cashmerette Appleton you'll see plenty of good ones. That's a sign of quality.

Long live Cashmerette Patterns!

Je travaille à la maison je n'ai pas besoin de plusieurs robes identiques mais c'est une couture rapide et très satisfaisante alors, si je la refais, je vais descendre la taille un tout petit peu pour qu'elle soit bien calée sur ma taille naturelle. Ça replacerait l'horizontal perdu quand on croise les liens.

Le tissu est un peu léger pour une robe d'hiver, mais je l'ai porté au CSF et j'ai eu énormément de compliments.

La robe Appleton est vraiment super. Bien dessinée, facile à faire et pleine de possibilité. Si vous voulez vous faire une idée, vous n'avez qu'à taper Cashmerette Appleton, y'en a plein de vraiment jolies, c'est un signe de qualité.

Burda Sean

Last year at the CSF Trade Show, I was offered a couple of meters of this delicious sequined boiled wool by Aniline (she still has some grey) and I spent a year petting it without quite knowing what to do with it. Two meters in 130cm is a weird length as it doesn't offer a lot of leaway. You can't make a full lenght coat, it's barely enough to get a collar and collar stand going on a shorter one and the content, wool and rayon, shrank when I steammed it to prep so I lost about 10cm. I really liked the fabric, but it just sat there waiting for a brilliant idea (Personnaly, I am a blind follower of Rule 4 in A Dress A Day's How To Buy Fabric : I take 3 yards minimum of anything I have no plan for, just in case. Fabric sellers love me!).
Wow! this whole paragraph makes me sounds like an ungrateful bitch but I really was genuinely moved when I received it and still am! I'm double glad I found the perfect project for it.

L'an dernier au CSF, j'ai reçu un très joli cadeau de la part d'Aniline. Une jolie laine bouillie parsemée de sequins (il lui reste du gris) et pendant un an, je l'ai gardé en vue en la caressant, me demandant ce que j'allais en faire (En règle générale, quand j'ai un coup de coeur et que c'est moi qui achète sans avoir de projet en tête, je suis aveuglément la règle 4 du guide d'achat de tissu de A Dress A Day et je prends 3m minimum. Les marchands de tissu m'adore!). Là, 2m de 130cm, c'est un métrage étrange, pas assez pour faire un manteau, difficile d'y caler un col et et son pied et en plus j'ai perdu au moins 10cm en décatissant. J'adorais mon cadeau et j'ai donc attendu patiemment d'avoir une idée géniale.
Et là vous vous dîtes mais elle se plaint la bouche pleine, mais j'étais vraiment touchée et je le suis toujours et j'aime mon cadeau. Je suis doublement heureuse de lui avoir trouvé un projet parfait.

I also had 5m (see buying guide above) of this fabulous Supercut polyester print I bought on a whim, which I thought would make a good lining for it. You all know I love a good contrast lining. Both fabrics stayed in a pile as a vague afterthought, until I saw the pattern for the Sean. I'm a fan of Burda's Vintage mags. I'm always very happy to get them and I have made a good number of things from them. I made 3 items from last years' issue alone : Kim, Rosa and Fiore.

J'avais aussi 5m (voir le guide d'achat ci-haut) de cet imprimé polyester, un coup de coeur de chez Supercut qui, j'étais certaine ferait une jolie doublure. Vous savez combien j'aime les doublures contrastées. Tout ça est resté dans une pile en attente jusqu'à ce que je vois le Sean du nouveau Hors Série Burda Vintage. J'adore les Burda Vintage. L'an dernier j'en ai cousu 3 : Kim, Rosa et Fiore.

Needless to say, I didn't spend a lot of my time on fitting, the proportions didn't warrant I spend a minute on it. It's a 38 on top, 40 in the middle and 42 at the bottom expertly blended in! My real problem came with the cutting, because as stated earlier, it was barely enough fabric and I had to do some creative use of the extremely wide and uneven selvage, that's boiled wool for you, reduce the sewing margins to a minimum and so on. I made it work which made me extremely happy.

Je n'ai pas perdu de temps, pas de toile, pas d'ajustements, les proportions sont telles que je n'ai pas eu besoin de faire beaucoup de calculs : 38 en haut, 40 dans le milieu, 42 en bas, tout bien traçé par des mains expertes! Mon seul problème s'est révélé à la coupe parce que comme je l'ai dit, j'avais pas tout à fait assez de tissu pour être confortable. J'ai tout utilisé, même la laise inégale commune à la laine bouillie, j'ai réduit les marges de couture au strict minimum et au final, j'ai réussi à tout placer, ce qui m'a vraiment réjoui.

To get the right drape, I fused the whole thing with medium pro weft interfacing. It's quite hard to find and when I am about to run out, I go to Lafayette Saltiel in Paris and buy about ten meters. Smaller quantities are available at Rascol's. I was really worried about fusing sequins but they took the heat.

Pour obtenir le bon drapé, j'ai entoilé toutes les pièces avec du thermocollant pro weft medium. Le pro weft est difficile a trouver et quand je suis près de la rupture de stock, je passe chez Lafayette Saltiel et j'en prends 10m. En plus petite quantité, vous avez Rascol. J'étais un peu inquiète pour les paillettes, mais elles ont pris la chaleur sans problème.

I didn't do the topstitching that is recommended in the model, but I've worn it a couple of times and I think it would benefit from it. Stylistically, it would explain why the lovely Adelaide's world famous Button Bar button offered by my sister is so far from the edge, so I might do that in front of the TV one night even if I don't like hand sewing.

Je n'ai pas fait les surpiqûres recommandées par le modèle mais je pense que ça ferait une différence car je trouve que le joli bouton de chez le mondialement célèbre Button Bar d'Adélaïde offert par ma soeur, est un peu seul et loin du bord. Ne soyez pas surpris si vous me voyez devant la télé un soir en train de faire des travaux d'aiguilles, même si je n'aime pas ça.

I Am Apollon

Je vous présente mon nouveau doudou, l'Apollon de I Am Patterns. C'est un gros sweatshirt que j'ai fait avec le tissu que j'ai acheté à Montréal cet été quand je suis allée magasiner avec Heather Lou, Kelly et Vicki (oui je me la pète un peu!). C'est un jersey polyester/coton/lycra assez lourd, le même que Kelly a utilisé pour faire le Hudson pour homme.

Here is my new cosy! The Apollon from I Am Patterns. I made it with the fabric I bought this summer when I went shopping with Heather Lou, Kelly and Vicki (showing off a little!). It's a heavy poly/coton/lycra French terry. Kelly used it for the Man Hudson.

Je suis toujours à la recherche de trucs à porter qui font pas trop pyjama pour travailler à la maison au chaud et quand j'ai vu Marie-Emillienne, la créatrice (et auteur d'un livre sur la surjeteuse que je n'ai pas lu mais qui a été écrit avec Marie-Noëlle Bayard co-auteur de mon livre qui est à elle seule un gage de qualité), dans les allées du CSF avec sa version en matelassé, je l'ai suivi en hurlant j'en veut un (elle m'a offert le patron, mais je voulais le payer je vous jure! #bonusjaigagnecousumain). Avec un petit legging ou un jeans slim, je pourrai accueillir le facteur sans avoir trop l'air de tout juste sortir de mon lit!

I'm always on the lookout for stuff to make that don't look like I just stepped out of bed to work from home and when I saw Marie-Emilienne at the CSF trade show, I litteraly ran after her screaming I want one! (She kindly gave me one, but I swear I wanted to pay for it! #iwonthefrenchbeefreebee) With a legging or a slim I'll be able to open the door to the mailman and kinda look put together.

Je l'ai fait sans trop réfléchir, 44 en haut et 46 en bas pour avoir de l'aisance et j'ai ajouté 6cm en bas pour que ça fasse vraiment robe et que je puisse la porter avec des collants (mes jambes ne supportent plus le très court voyez-vous!). Ce n'est qu'à la photo que je me suis rendu compte que j'aurais peut-être du porter un peu plus d'importance au seyant et ajuster en conséquence. Objectivement, j'aurais du faire un 40 aux épaules, avec une petite augmentation poitrine qui éliminerait les plis sur le côté et ensuite un 44/46 en bas.

I didn't give it much tought, I cut a 44 on top and a 46 at the bottom because I wanted it really big. I added 6cm to the bottom so I could wear it with thights if I so chose (my legs are not good enough to wear short short anymore). It's only when I saw the picture that I realised I could have paid a little more attention to fitting. Objectively, I should have cut a 40 at the shoulder with a FBA which would have gotten rid of the draglines, then a 44/46 at the bottom.

Je ne sais pas vous, mais moi, devoir modifier tous mes patrons tout le temps, ça me gave. Je ne vais donc pas psychoter c'est un sweatshirt. Je suis au chaud dedans et ça m'épate d'avoir trouvé du bord côte presque assorti. Un rien m'amuse.

You know what? Having to modifiy all my patterns is a pain and sometimes I just don't want to bother. I'm not going to agonise about this, it's a sweatshirt. It's warm and I'm in awe that I have found ribbing that almost match perfectly. I'm easy to please.

L'apollon est un super patron de débutant et je crois qu'Emilienne l'utilise dans son cours de surjeteuse, c'est rapide, coupe 30min, fabrication 60min, facile et simple que demande le peuple! Si vous avez peur du jersey, c'est un projet idéal parce qu'il demande un jersey stable. Si vous avez peur de votre surjeteuse, c'est le projet pour l'aprivoiser, et si vous n'avez pas de surjeteuse, vous pourez le faire quand même.

Plus je réfléchi, plus je crois que je vais commander des P'tits pois d'enfer chez Camillette!

The Apollon is a great beginner pattern. I think Emilienne uses it to teach serger 101. It's quick, 30 min. to cut, 1hour to sew up, easy and simple to make, what else do you want? If you are afraid of sewing jersey, it's perfect because it calls for a really stable knit, it you are afraid of your serger, it's the right project to get acquainted with it and it's also easily made without one. It comes with English instructions too!

The more I think about it, the more I want to order some polka dots from Camillette!

Cette sculpture Montréalaise représent exactement mon état d'esprit en ce moment. Je viens de passer pas mal de temps devant mon ordinateur à peaufiner un projet dont je ne peux pas parler encore mais qui va être super chouette. Mes petites coutures et ma machine me manquent mais tout ce qui s'en vient est bon et j'ai pas mal de fun.

This Montreal sculpture represent exactly how I feel right now, I am a little fried computerwise. There is a lot going on for me, some I can't tell you about quite yet, all of it very good, most of it was done on the computer. I miss my sewing machine and my bits of selfish garment making but I am really having a lot of fun.

En septembre je suis allée au Do-It-Together de Pimsy et je voulais juste mentionner au passage que le vrai bonus d'avoir gagné cette émission c'est que j'ai le bonheur de rencontrer des gens fabuleux, créatifs, drôles et passionnés que j'adore revoir. Tellement que j'en oublie de prendre des photos et je dois les voler. Petit clin d'oeil aux Lyonnaises et aux Montréalaises sans photos!
Du coup je remets ça au CSF chez Fiskars (6H038) vendredi 20 et samedi 21, j'y animerai un petit atelier en début d'après-midi et une séance de dédicace plus tard dans la journée. (Ateliers : 13h30/14h30, Dédicace : le 20 de 17h à 20h, le 21 de 14h30 à 17h30). Mais j'ai pas mal de copines à visiter et des partenaires aussi alors n'hésitez pas à venir me dire bonjour dans les allées.

I went to Paris for Pimsy's Do-It-Together in September and, this is the real bonus part of having won this tv contest, I keep meeting absolutely fabulous people who are creative, funny and passionate whom I love hanging out with and seeing again. So much so, I forget to take pictures and have to steal them. Hello pictureless Lyonnaises and Montrealers!
I'll be doing that again at the CSF Craft Fair in Paris on the Fiskars stand (6H038) where I'l be making things early in the afternoon and book signing later and generally walking about since now I have a lot of friends to visit with! Don't hesitate to come and say hi!

En octobre, j'ai voyagé à Lyon, Rennes et Nantes pour rencontrer les revendeurs de mon nouveau partenaire Janome. Ce sont des gens qui adorent leur métier et j'ai adoré les rencontrer. In October, I travelled to Lyon, Rennes and Nantes for my new partner, Janome, I met dealers from all over France and they really are a swell bunch of people. J'ai fait un jean hybrid Ultimate Trouser/Jeanius qui fait vraiment Mom Jeans, et bien que ce soit à la mode chez les jeunes, chez moi c'est horrible, mais pire, le jeans un peu stretch que j'ai choisi ne reprend pas sa forme alors je le porte pour 5 minutes, il s'étire d'au moins 2 tailles et ne revient plus. Ça va être tout juste bon pour aller jardiner. Raté!
Pour la prochaine fois que ça me reprendra de faire un jeans, j'ai téléchargé les patrons de Closet Case File et le 1083 qui est gratuit. Je me suis aussi acheté 2 paires de boyfriend Uniqlo pour ne pas être toute nue dans la rue en attendant.
J'ai essayé 2-3 petits hauts tous ratés. J'ai un problème à ce niveau. Vous auriez pas un petit patron sympa qui serait flatteur pour ma nouvelle morphologie qui serait seyant et à la mode et qui ne me donnerait pas l'allure d'une petite vieille mal fagotée?

I did sew for myself!

I made an Ultimate Trouser/Jeanius hybrid jeans back in September which look like Mom jeans. Though fashionable on the younger set, on a real Mom like me, they look awful but worst, if I wear them for 5 minutes they become 2 sizes bigger as the slightly stretch jeans fabric I chose has absolutely no recovery whatsoever. Fail! To feel better I have downloaded Closet Case File's jeans and the free 1083. I also bought 2 pairs of Uniqlo boyfriend jeans to tie me over until I get the courage to tackle that again.

I tried to sew some quick tops too which were just as bad. I have a top problem. Can anybody suggest some really flattering fashionable tops that look good and modern on a middle age body with a D-cup? I totally fail in that department, everything makes me look like an old fart.

My most successful bit of sewing was making a size 12 muslin for Cashmerette's Appleton (Congratulations Jenny!). I have a couple of tweaks to do, mostly in the shoulder, we'll call that one an old age low breast gravitational adjustment but the toile (here in jersey Trait offered by Self Tissus) wearable and flattering. This feels so good! Girl Charlee UK sent me some fabric to specifically make it with and I chose 2 colorways, like Severine's. So expect to see some more of that.

J'ai 3 bateaux en mer, Sodebo dans la Route du Café, pour qui j'ai cousu jusqu'à la veille du départ, Raoul Pastèque et Nautipark dans la Mini-Transat. Ils sont tous devant le peloton, je suis super fière de mes poulains.

Work In Progress

In my ever growing bucket list of all things sewing, taking a proper sewing class with a knowledgeable instructor has always been right up there. I too wanted to sit and chat and sew and learn. But what class? I am not a beginner anymore. I'm a damn good intermediate but not always, and I, though I would really appreciate the handwork that goes with a Khalje Couture class, don't live that life. I want to wear what I make and I'd probably be more comfortable sitting in with Janet Prey. Actually my dream class would be with Kathleen Fasenella and it would involve high end RTW pattern hacking, prepping, cutting like a professional and getting consistent results, but she doesn't teach people like me.

Dans ma liste de coutures à faire avant de mourir, prendre un vrai cours de couture avec un prof sérieux à toujours été en haut près du titre. Moi aussi je voulais m'asseoir et papoter et apprendre. Mais quelle classe? Je ne suis plus une débutante. Je suis plutôt niveau assez avancé, mais pas toujours, et bien que je suis certaine que j'apprécierais vraiment d'assister à un cours Haute Couture de Susan Khalje, je n'ai pas ce style de vie. Je veux porter ce que je fais et je serais probablement plus confortable chez Janet Prey. Ma classe idéale serait chez Kathleen Fasenella et j'y apprendrait comment coudre du prêt-à-porter de grande qualité en préparant mes patrons comme une pro, mais elle n'enseigne pas aux gens comme moi.

Ready To Wear

When I met Norma from Orange Lingerie in Paris last year, I thought hey there is a cool advanced class I could take, I truly don't know anything about bra making. As I was preparing my summer family trip to Boston, I inquired about taking a class and the deal was sealed.

Anne-Marie from le Mani d'Oro, I have a secret sewing crush on her she is an admirable seamstress, as well as Leisa from A Challenging Sew came too. Leisa is another sewing hero of mine, she only makes the best using all the Haute Couture techniques and as a consequence makes true works of art.

I was in such good company!

Quand j'ai rencontré Norma de chez Orange Lingerie à Paris l'an dernier, je me suis dit: tiens, ça serait cool d'apprendre à faire un soutien-gorge, c'est quelque chose que je ne sais absolument pas faire et j'ai le niveau. En préparant mon voyage familial cet été, j'ai contacté Norma et on s'est mis d'accord.

Anne-Marie du Mani d'Oro, je l'admire en secrètement depuis des années, elle coud admirablement, et Leisa de A Challenging Sew sont venues. Contrairement à moi, Leisa ne fait que de la Haute Couture et ses réalisations sont des oeuvres d'art.

First thing you do when you take a class is getting measured up and trying out bras, Marlboroughs to be exact, lots of them, in which I realized my instinct were right, I am no longer a C cup. I'm a DD! I have breast now and though not news, it was a shock! I have breasts I didn't ask for, that I don't really like and don't know what to do with. Damn you middle age!

I can see how you can loose your wits trying to fit bras by yourself because sizing is arbitrary and bra shapes are different from one country and or brand to the next. So I am relieved to have had expertise with that part. It's a huge time saver.

Once fitted, you start cutting and sewing following Norma's good guidance. She makes all this tiny delicate sewing seem so easy and in a way, it is, the sewing of the bra is not the hard part.

You make your first bra on day one, which is kind of a trial run, you make changes to your pattern and you make a second one on day two.

La première chose qu'on fait en arrivant chez Norma c'est de se mesurer et d'essayer ses échantillons de Marlborough. C'est là que j'ai réalisé ce que je soupçonnais depuis un moment, je ne suis plus un bonnet C Mais un DD. J'ai des seins que je n'ai pas demandé, que je n'aime pas et dont je ne sais que faire. Âge mûr de merde!

Je vois bien comment on pourrait perdre sa raison en essayant de trouver la bonne taille et les bons ajustements de soutien-gorge. Comme pour les vêtements, les tailles sont arbitraires d'un pays et ou fabricant à l'autre, les préférences de formes régionales, je suis super contente d'avoir eu de l'aide en la matière. Ça m'a économisé pas mal de temps.

Une fois la bonne taille trouvée, on coupe et on coud sous la supervision bienveillante de Norma. La couture ne m'a pas posé de problème à part que c'est vraiment tout petit et délicat.

Le premier jour, on fait un premier soutien-gorge qui nous sert de toile et après modifications au patron, on en fait un deuxième le lendemain.

Finishing Touch

I really really enjoyed my classes and made new friends and armed with my new knowledge, came back home, finished my bras and wore them everyday. I had no idea good support made you feel so amazing! I was starting to like my breasts, own them, accept them and now wanted to dress them up properly.

I was planning on making the kit I bought at Grey's Fabrics but I'm kind of a Plain Jane as far as underwear go, I don't really like Duoplex and I don't like lace, so the possibilities are not endless here. (I am actively looking for an alternative, so have bought kits from Bravo Bella, Elise Patterns and The Emerald Studio. I will tell you about it when I make them up.)

J'ai vraiment adoré le cours et je me suis fait des copines et armée de mes nouvelles connaissances, je suis rentrée, j'ai fini mes soutifs puis je les ai porté, tous les jours. In the meantime, Norma released a second bra pattern, the Boylston, which I saw at Ladybird's. You can make the Boylston out of any fabric with little or no stretch and I just made one out of Liberty scraps.

Entre temps, Norma a sorti un deuxième patron, le Boylston, que j'ai vu chez Ladybird. Comme je vous le disais, on peut faire le Boylston avec du tissu avec très peu ou pas de stretch et je viens tout juste d'en faire un avec des chutes de Liberty.

Long time readers of this humble blog will know what went through my mind that very minute, right?

I can make bras to exactly match my numerous Liberty Fabric shoes! This amuses me to no end and I have the power to make it happen. Plain Jane no more!

This dress is my official entry into The Refashioner's 2015 Get Shirty Community Challenge.

I made it out of 2 half price $14,99cad XXL women's shirt I picked up at this den of consumerism that is Costco. Costco is the land of the big discount stuff/food, it's so overwhelming that I usually recoil from abundance and push the cart. But last time I was there, I zoomed in directly to this pile of Liberty shirts which I thought were a hallucination. None of them were my size, but I wanted the fabric really bad, so I picked two up.

En général, quand j'y vais, je suis tellement submergée par la taille et les quantités astronomiques que je conduis le caddy. Mais la dernière fois, j'ai vu tout de suite la pile de chemises Liberty croyant à une hallucination. Il n'y avait pas ma taille mais je voulait ce tellement ce tissu, que j'en ai pris deux.

After deciding that I would make a cool shirtdress, I unpicked meticulously and draped it directly on myself.... several times until I decided what would go where. This decision process is very long and hard to explain, but here is a breakdown, just in case you feel inspired.

Like every good Liberty fabric lover, no scraps were thrown away and I made an Orange Lingerie Boylston bra with the leftovers. The Boylston is specifically for low to no movement fabric, which opens up great possibilities.

Comme tous les amoureux de Liberty, j'ai gardé toutes les chutes et j'ai fait un soutien-gorge Boylston de chez Orange Lingerie. Le Boylston conçu est spécifiquement pour du tissu avec pas ou très peu de stretch, ça laisse pas mal de possibilités.

Being able to make a matching bra is pretty cool and super sexy (the very keen bra making peeps will immediately see that I had a slight fitting problem, which I have corrected since this racy late night selfie was taken).

Do you refashion? Refashioning is really fun. You learn just as much by taking garments apart as you do by constructing them. It will also free you from patterns pieces and help you be more creative.

You should participate also because of the prize package, have you seen the prize package, it's just as overwhelming as Costco's! Get to it.

Est-ce que vous refaçonnez? C'est vraiment chouette. Vous apprendrez tout autant en décousant un vêtement qu'en en cousant un. Ça libère aussi, ça va vous sortir de vos pièces de patron et vous deviendrez plus créatifs.

Dès que j'ai reçu les patrons, j'ai décidé d'attaquer le pantalon avec l'optimisme d'une débutante.

Le pantalon c'est ma Pierre de Rosette et une fois tous les 2 ans environ je tente d'en refaire un qui finit inévitablement à la poubelle par frustration et manque de patience. Là, j'en suis à ma troisième toile et je crois que je vais peut-être enfin déchiffrer le code! Pour l'instant, j'ai fait l'ajustement cuisse proéminente, allongé l'arrière rogné les côté, je suis assez plate des hanches et là, ça commence à ressembler à un pantalon que je porterais. J'ai encore des trucs à régler dans la fourche, mais ça s'en vient.

As soon as I got the patterns, I started on the pants with beginner's optimism.

Pants are my Rosetta Stone and once every couple of years, I make an attempt at making them, which usually finish in the garbage in frustration and lack of patience. This is the 3rd muslin and I may actually crack the code this time!. I have made the big front thigh , adjustment, lengthened the back crotch, flattened the sides and it is starting to look like pants I will actually wear. I still have some crotch issue that need fixing, but it's coming.

A gauche toile 3, à droite toile 3 avec fourche arrière creusée et arrière jambe gauche relâchée, les plis ont presque disparus. Le problème avec le pantalon, c'est que chaque modification doit être faite une à une parce que ça change tout, et qu'il faut être patiente. A la décharge de Lisa, la gentille proprio de SewOverIt, ce n'est pas le patron le problème, c'est ma morphologie qui n'est pas standard, j'ai les mêmes problèmes avec tous les patrons de pantalons que j'ai essayé.

J'y retourne, je vous montrerai les résultats bientôt. Je vais sans doute aussi faire un petit Saltbox top pour aller avec mon pantalon et je lorgne sur la robe Mississippi pour utiliser du Liberty super spécial que j'ai reçu du Japon ce printemps... affaire à suivre.

Left is muslin 3, right is muslin 3 with the back crotch scooped and fabric released on the left leg's back for my calf. The drag lines have almost disappeared. You have to be patient with pants because you have to do one modification at a time as it will probably change the balance somewhere else. I would like to exonerate the lovely Lisa from SewOverIt, the pattern is fine, I'm tough to fit and I have had the same problems with all the other patterns.

I'm going back, I'll show you the results soon. To celebrate, I'll probably sew up a Saltbox top, to go with it and the Mississippi dress is calling me, I have some very special Liberty I received from Japan in the spring that would be perfect...stay tuned.

Some blog posts are harder to write than others.

This is why I have been delaying this one. It's a goodbye post and it's hard to write goodbyes.

On June 25th, Laurent Bourgnon, French yachtman extraordinaire, never came back from a dive in the Pacific Ocean. To my English speaking, non sailing readers that doesn't mean much, but around here we were hit by a ton of bricks. Laurent and my husband were a life long friends, he was his boat rigger for 10 years, sailed all the seas and built and rebuilt all the boats with him.

One night in 1992, as I was closing up the bar I worked at in Québec City's Old Port, Laurent Bourgnon and his 2 men crew came, sat outside and ordered a few beers. Insignificant in itself, that single moment changed the course of my entire life.

This is the night I met my husband, this is why I came to France, which led to a 23 years relationship, a family, some house building and got me back to sewing (I made my first welt pocket on the communal plastic kitchen table), more sewing, better sewing and a tv show.

Laurent was solar and was a magnet for the best and brightest men and women. If he let you in his inner circle, you would enter the rarified world of excellence... in everything. Climbers had climbed all the 8000m without oxygen, walkers had walked around the earth on the Equator, drivers had won Les 24 Heures du Mans 3/4 times, cyclists were world champion or olympic medalists or yellow jersey, scientists cured rare diseases, balloonists were 5 times world champion, skiers held world record in speed skying or some other medal, photographers, writers, pilots, musicians, divers, directors, actors, architects, runners and other sailors were the best.

As much as I felt out of place meeting all of these extraordinary people, I also felt electrified, motivated to be the best at what I am doing however small or mundane and obligated to never give up when things got difficult. If I am here, it's in part thanks to him.

I shall be in his debt forever.

My heart goes to his kids and wife and parents and brother. May his force be with them.

Y'a des billets plus difficiles à écrire que d'autres.

Ça doit être pour ça que je retarde. C'est pour dire au revoir et c'est difficile de faire des adieux.

Le 25 juin dernier, Laurent Bourgnon, navigateur français de renom, n'est pas revenu d'une plongée en Polynésie. Pour mes lecteurs nord-américains ou ceux qui ne naviguent pas, ça ne veut pas dire grand chose, mais ici la nouvelle nous a frappé comme une tonne de brique. Mon mari et lui se connaissaient depuis l'adolescence, il a été son gréeur pendant 10 ans, équipier de toutes les navigations et de toutes les constructions et reconstructions de tous ses bateaux.

Une nuit de 1992, alors que je m'apprêtais à fermer le bar du Vieux Port de Québec dans lequel je travaillais, il est arrivé avec son équipage de 2 à la terrasse et à commandé quelques bières. Moment insignifiant si il en est qui a totalement changé ma vie.

Ce soir là, j'ai rencontré mon mari, j'ai déménagé en France où, j'ai fondé une famille, construit une maison, recommencé à coudre (j'ai fait ma première poche passepoilée sur la table de cuisine en plastique de la maison commune à Carnac), continué à coudre, cousu mieux et gagné une émission de télé.

Laurent était un être solaire et un aimant pour les meilleurs et les plus brillants, homme ou femme. En entrant dans son intimité, on entrait dans le monde fermé de l'excellence...dans tout! Le montagnard avait gravi tous les 8000m sans oxygène, le marcheur avait fait le tour du monde par l'équateur, les conducteurs avaient gagné les 24 Heures du Mans 3 fois, les cyclistes étaient plusieurs fois champions du monde, médaillés olympiques ou maillot jaune, les skieurs avaient des records du monde de vitesse au kilomètre lancé ou autres médailles, les scientifiques soignaient des maladies rares, les photographes, écrivains, musiciens, plongeurs, directeurs, acteurs, architectes, pilotes, coureurs et autres navigateurs étaient les meilleurs.

Même si je ne me sentais pas tout à fait à ma place en rencontrant tous ces gens extraordinaires, ils m'ont inspiré et motivé pour faire de mon mieux quelque soit ma petite ou banale activité et m'ont insufflé l'obligation de ne jamais baisser les bras quand les choses sont difficiles. Si je suis ici, c'est un peu grâce à lui.

Je lui dirai merci toute ma vie.

Mon coeur est avec ses enfants, sa femme, ses parents et son frère. Que sa force soit avec eux.
