WiFi Film Conference
Wilmington, NC
June 27 & 28, 2008

Passes now Available on http://www.WiFiWilmington.com

WiFi (Wilmington Inside the Film Industry) is an organization that was created to offer support to an already thriving business. Wilmington, NC, sometimes known as “Hollywood East”, has generated more revenue from motion picture and commercial production than any U.S. city outside of Los Angeles and New York. This means that by filming here, you get a first-class cast and crew that lives and works locally; and WIFI has come together to bring the best to Wilmington under one roof.

WiFi is an event that allows every craft person from producers to production assistants to learn the hard-hitting information they need to excel in their field. This event opens the door for up and coming filmmakers to meet their future crew in a networking setting, and to learn from the best to get them to the next level.

We will scour the country and line up workshops, panel discussions, Q&A sessions and meet-and-greets with some of the best Producers, Directors, Actors, PR and Talent Agents in the business from LA, New York and from right here in North Carolina.

Wilmington filmmakers will have the chance to pose the questions that have been on the minds of many, i.e. topics such as financing, distribution, licensing, budgeting, screenwriting, and much more…

Our goal? To make Wilmington “THE” East coast location for filmmaking.

Upon entrance to the event, we will have vendor/information booths set up to allow their presence to be known to the industry. Businesses that can help you, the filmmaker, bring your project to fruition.

Tickets are available for the Friday night WiFi Gala, the Saturday Conference as well as the WiFi After Glow Saturday night.

Stay tuned, a lot more to come as we pave the path to an event Wilmington filmmakers have been eagerly waiting for.

Pat Hingle’s latest film, Undoing Time, we have no life Productions and HighFall Films

Hey to all,

We are stirring up interest to honor one of our greatest and local actors (North Carolina based), Pat Hingle. With the upcoming Academy Awards in February of 2008, we thought how great it would be if the Academy would honor Pat Hingle in life. For anyone who has had admired his work or had the pleasure of knowing and working with Pat, you know just how deserving he is.

Pat and Julie Hingle are two of the nicest, most genuine people you will ever meet. Pat is one of our greatest actors whose career spans over 50 years in the business and nearly 190 film/TV credits. From Movies, TV, and Broadway, he has done it all.

As many of you might know, Pat is in declining health. Here is a man whose resume in film reads like a novel. Should we not honor a man in life instead of in death? What a great moment it would be for him, his family and the Academy.

Please join us in our campaign to honor this great man in life at the Academy Awards in 2008. Here is a link to the Academy. Take a couple of minutes to express our heart felt feelings concerning Pat Hingle.

http://www.oscars.org/contact/general.html

We’ve gotten confirmation from Filmmakers and Actors, there has been over 240 emails sent to the Academy so far in 24 hours! The numbers continue to grow every hour. Thank you! Please, if you haven’t done so to honor this great legend, please make time to write to the Academy.

Please reply to this email if you have contacted the Academy so we will know who has participated. info@wehavenolifeproductions.com

Love to all,

On Variety today, there’s an article about the difficulties Swiss filmmakers are facing. They’re a small country with 3 different languages, limited talent, limited budget and a limited audience. Ideally, international distribution would be the answer but distributors are not into risk-taking.

Can you relate? Let’s face it. There are reasons you’re trying to make it as a filmmaker while living in the Carolinas. Maybe you don’t want to be part of the Hollywood Studio system. Maybe you have a family and moving to L.A. right now would be a stretch. Or maybe you’re a sissy.

Either way, independent filmmakers face challenges such as low (or no) budgets, limited talent and finding an audience - just like the Swiss (albeit on a smaller scale).

That’s why I urge you - and the Swiss if you’re reading - to consider the internet and independent duplication/distribution services. It’s a very inexpensive way to chase after your dreams. Here’s options to consider:

1. Offer your film for free on the internet. Make money off of advertising on the site.
2. Sell your film on the internet. Offer options for download and purchasing a hard copy.
3. Utilize DVD duplication and distribution services such as Lulu and CreateSpace. They simply take a cut of what is purchased, leaving you with more time for filmmaking.

In almost any other industry, starting your own business is risky but not unheard of. But how many film entrepreneurs have you heard about? Not enough. Thankfully the internet is giving us a chance to revolutionize filmmaking. Who’s with me?

Hi, I’m Nathania. I’m Josh’s wife. Josh has been so busy filming the Rejects, so I thought I’d hijack his blog.

Today, I’d like to share with you a few companies that can help you with DVD production and distribution. Sure, you could burn your own DVDs, print your own covers and assemble the final product. But wouldn’t you rather spend your time on your next film project? I thought so.

Here are some time-saving options:

Lulu.com is based right here in the Carolinas. If you’re really into local, then this company is for you. They have a great reputation and you can also market your DVDs through their site. Unfortunately, it’s a bit on the pricey side. 100 discs = $658, 500=$3,260

CreateSpace, formerly CustomFlix Labs, is an Amazon company. That alone has a ton of implications. You can sell your DVD on Amazon, offer it for download on Amazon Unbox, sell through a CreateSpace Estore or simply order duplication/replication services. Duplication of 100 DVDs = $297 (it was not clear whether you can do this w/o selling on Amazon/CreateSpace). Replication of 500 retail ready DVD-9 = $1295.

esystor.com is not a particularly flashy site, but they do offer DVD Replication Services. 500 retail ready DVD-9 = $1365

FilmBaby - If you’re familiar with CDBaby, then this is a no brainer. Sell your film on FilmBaby - they keep $4 for every sale. You set your price so profits vary among filmmakers, but FilmBaby claims an 80% average profit for their filmmakers.

What to Consider:

Distribution

If you don’t want to mail each individual DVD order yourself, then you should consider using a service that will do the mailing for you. Technically, you won’t make as much of a profit, but time is money. If your personal mailing assembly line is keeping you from working on your next project, then you could be delaying profits in the long run.

Price and Profit

Amazon will keep more of a profit than other services, but they also have a HUGE reach. The good news is that it costs you nothing, since they print on-demand.

Read the Fine Print

Will you get your mailed materials back? Do you get to proof a copy of the DVD before they’re sold or printed? Do your homework. Make sure you know exactly what your duplication and/or distribution service is offering.

Greenlight Yourself

Hey - why wait for Hollywood to notice you? Embrace the digital age where the world truly is your oyster. Make a name for yourself. Don’t let anyone decide who you are, what story you should tell or what your style should be. Be your own studio. Greenlight your next project. What are you waiting for?

Catrine McGregor Acting Workshops RESCHEDULED.

Yes! More information that starts south of the North Carolina border! “6 Degrees of Genre” is an interesting new flick currently in pre-production in… well, all over! You see, the film is made by several different filmmakers all over and being lead by the South East Film Association’s Chuck Fallaw, who is based in Columbia, SC.

6 DEGREES of GENRE is an innovative project created by Bren Pettingill and Chuck Fallaw of Movie Tao Productions. The are currently casting for the fist film in what they hope to be a series.

The basic premise is altering the 6 degrees of seperation theory in to a film that transforms between 6 different genres all the while staying with in the same story.

Sounds like a great project! And yes, this blogger has decided to take a part of this by signing up to do the Sci-Fi genre segment!

“Pray” is a new feature film in pre-production that is being produced in Raleigh. The film, a suspense/thriller flick targeting the growing faith-friendly film market, is described as a fun and not overtly “preachy” film that is appealing to all audiences.
Carolina Flicks: What is the film’s synopsis or logline?

Matt Mitchell: “Pray” is a fun, suspense/thriller designed to take the viewer on a clean thrill-ride. It is in the new and growing genre of positive, edgy, faith-friendly films that are not overtly “preachy” yet are fully appealing to general, secular audiences. (See recent 20th Century Fox/FoxFaith Theatrical Release: “Three” by Ted Dekker and “Hangman’s Curse” by Frank Peretti for similar theme.) In our film the hero & heroine are believable, moral characters cast in a positive light. Target audience is anyone who wants to enjoy an adrenaline-inducing thrill-ride/movie experience without the offensive content of the current slate of films in theaters today. Target age for “Pray” will be High School & Older and has been called “The Perfect Semi-scary Date Movie!” by those who’ve seen the script. It has humor, drama, action, elements of fright, and a subtle moral message throughout that teens as well as parents will appreciate. For fans of this genre, there is even a shocking, if not, miraculous twist ending that will leave the audience gasping. This fantastic surprise ending in the script has been intentionally “locked” to preserve the secret and will be kept from everyone except those who are in the final scene. (All circulating copies of the screenplay will show the last scenes “blank”.)

Synopsis: Some friends enjoy an out-of-town rock concert (Third Day/Toby Mac etc.) in Charlotte, NC. After some eerie events at their hotel, the friends abandon their night of rest and decide to drive thru the night back to their hometown several hours away. However, someone or something follows them home. After a seemingly uneventful school day, events unfold that find the lead character alone at the Mall later that evening. As the night closes in, the mall closes, and we find our heroine mysteriously trapped inside. However, she is not alone. It will take her resolute strength and unflinching faith (and a few shocking “miracles” along the way) for her to escape the night.

CF: As you say on the site itself, you are squeezing this between a “warm and fuzzy” Christian film and a secular thriller. Do you find it difficult writing or producing a PG/G targeted thriller?

MM: Good question! : ) It certainly has it’s challenges! It’s made us really have to rely on a great, gripping storyline to keep the audience interested. Most movies choose the easy way out (which is to “shock” the audience with cheap, gimmicky thrills, gore, uber-violence, sexuality etc.) but we knew going into this that we were going to avoid all of that and take the high road. Those “slasher” type films are everywhere now, and we felt we could offer something more compelling yet just as creepy, while also weaving a subtle positive, moral message throughout the film. Hopefully, we’ve accomplished that without having to resort to “R” rated content that just doesn’t have any redeeming value.

CF: There are so many movies going the ultra gore route and this is a gore-free flick. Has this affected your search for financing or strengthened it?

MM: You know, we asked ourselves that same question early on! And the answer has been amazing. Instead of having to beg and knock on doors for support, people have been hearing about this project and coming to us! It’s been incredible to see how God has just brought key businessmen into our path who love the concept of a clean thriller with a pro-faith message. Apparently, there is a completely under served niche market out there that is just waiting for a great, action-packed, thrill-ride that doesn’t offend them every 5 seconds.

CF: On your site, you feature a blog and even sponsor packages from the movie for different levels of donation. Has that been successful for the film?

MM: The blog is a great way for fans of the upcoming film to stay up-to-date on what’s happening. We try to update it every few days. We hope to include some behind the scenes photos soon as well. As for the donation part, it’s been the exact opposite of what we originally expected. We figured we’d need numerous people to step forward, all contributing small amounts to help us finance the film. However, it’s been really just a few people who’ve stepped up, and they were willing to help us with large contributions that we never saw coming! It’s been very cool, and humbling, to watch how He has provided for us.

CF: With casting this week and a scene already in the can, how has your experience been finding cast, crew and locations?

MM: It’s been a great ride so far. As you know, we recently had a state-wide Casting Call that was just incredible! We had so much talent to look at, and we are THRILLED to see how the actors we’ve chosen will bring this story to life. Finding the crew was also very easy, as I’m surrounded with extremely gifted people at my church, and nearly all of them were willing to join Tiaan (our Executive Producer) and myself for this fun ride called “Pray.” So far, the most challenging part by far, has been securing great locations to shoot at. We’re trying to avoid paying high rental costs for locales such as a large multi-million dollar shopping mall, restaurants etc. So, once again we’re relying on some Divine intervention to provide all we need. : ) The largest hurdle, of course, was nailing down a massive shopping mall to film in, and God brought that to us this month! It is the single most critical location we HAD to have since it is where the climactic “pursuit” takes place, and almost 40% of the film is shot there. Wait till you see it! It is so creepy, and perfect for the scariest parts of the film. You’re gonna love the Mall sequence!

Joey Daoud, film school student writing about his experiences and filmmaking on his blog Coffee and Celluloid, is with us as guest blogger today. Read his experience of applying and interviewing to NCSA below:

I’m not going to try to end the film school debate. I think that’s a personal choice and is different for each person’s situation. I will, however, offer some information that will hopefully help you in making that choice. Specifically, I’m going to talk about my interview experience at North Carolina School of the Arts. The interview was a little over two years ago, so things might have drastically changed or it still could be the same (sorry to ruin the ending but at this point it’s pretty obvious that I am not a student at NCSA).One of the big arguments against film school is cost. “You’re better off taking that forty grand and making your own film.” Yes, that might be true, but one of the big draws of NCSA is they fund their student films (as does this school, the one I currently attend). You still have to pay tuition, but being a state school it’s no where near what you’d pay at NYU or USC, and you don’t have to dish out the ten grand to pay for your film.NCSA also has great facilities (I’d say better than my school). When you go on the campus you feel like you’re on a real Hollywood backlot. They have large sound stages, a screening room with a 70 mm projector, Foley studio, and the second largest collection of 35 mm prints (The Library of Congress has the largest). Also, being in Winston-Salem and near the mountains, there’s a lot of location possibilities.

Since my father lives about 20 miles north of Winston-Salem and I’d be able to get in-state tuition, I decided to apply.

I filled out the basic application, sent in my transcripts, SAT scores, etc, and a month or so later I got called back for an interview.

When I arrived for the interview there were a few hundred people in attendance. Eventually I realized that it was a school wide interview, so these were all applicants for all of the different programs (art, music, etc.). They took my picture, had me fill out another form, and then sent me to the auditorium. They started talking about financial aid, which seemed a bit odd since no one knew if they were a student.

After that all the applicants went off to their respective departments. The film students went to a screening room, where we got a welcome speech and then saw two short films NCSA students had made (one was a montage of movie clips for AFI or some film organization and the other was a super hero comedy…I think). After that we got a tour of the film school and finally they put us in a conference room to wait for our individual interview with one of the various professors.

For entertainment some of the current students stuck around and showed us their weekend projects while we waited. Every couple of minutes or so some new student would get called for their interview. The group kept getting smaller and smaller until finally I was called back. I don’t remember the name of the professor, but I’m pretty sure he was the directing professor.

We went through the usual, “Why do you want to come to film school. Why do you like film,” questions. Then he started looking through my transcripts and SAT scores. My grades have always been good but I never considered them to be amazing. I scored a 1330 on my SAT (out of 1600) and my GPA was somewhere in the 4.5 area, but I graduated in the 6th percentile in my class, so there were classmates that had far better grades then mine.

So I was surprised when the professor scanned over my transcripts and said something that still sticks with me today. “I think you’re going to get bored here. You’ve got to be a citizen of the world. These students come here and learn about all the technical elements, but when you’re out in the real world you’re not going to talk about cinematography. You have to know about other things.”

I wanted to keep my options open so I said that wouldn’t be the case, but I think it’s a great point and one of the biggest reasons I had against going to film school in general. I ended up getting accepted but as I said before, I didn’t go. What the professor said had some weight in my decision, but it was mostly financial factors. I’m not bored the school I go to, but my one complaint is that while I’m in the film program I can’t take any outside classes, unless I want to stay an extra semester.

I like the idea of being a citizen of the world, I’ll just have to be a self taught one. I know there are a few NCSA readers, and I’d love to hear how the school is today and if you think things have changed since the time of my interview.

This week, we dive into an often overlooked part of filmmaking, the Art Department. This installment of the crew profile we talk with Jamie Dorfman, Set Dresser and Props Assistant located in Wilmington, aka Wilmywood.

CAROLINA FLICKS: Talk about yourself! What have you done? Where have you done it? Why have you done it?

JD: I started working in production when i lived in san francisco. It was all a “who you knew” kind of thing there and i had become close with a production coordinator in town. i started working as a PA on commercials and TV shows. I did a lot of work as an office and set PA before i made the transition to the art department. i had been doing that on and off while working in a photo lab for a year or so when i got an offer to work as the art director on an independent film that was shooting in Savannah, GA. it was deferred pay and i would have to move from SF but i figured it might be an amazing opportunity for me to see if i was cut out for this work. That was my transition to feature films. i knew immediately after that production that i would never go back to commercials. from there a friend of mine living in Wilmington told me she could get me a job doing props for another independent film shooting there. i didn’t want to stay in Savannah so i moved again, this time t
o good ol’ wilmywood. since i have worked on 2 features, 1 short film and a TV pilot.

CF: Describe your role on a film production. What does a Set Dresser do? What is a props assistant do? What department are they in?

JD: Set dressers are really responsible to work with the set decorator to make the sets come to life. i worked as the on set dresser on cabin fever 2. the set dressers and set decorator will generally not be around while shooting, so it is the responsibility of the on set dresser to maintain the sets. this involves taking a lot of photos and maintaining continuity from one take to the next or one scene to the next. it can be pretty tough. especially on very elaborate sets or during scenes where the actors are moving a lot of stuff around. the props person and script supervisor help in the matter of continuity as well.
