I’ve been asked a few times where the County landfills are.  Unfortunately, it’s not easy to find the information, but here’s what the Caroline County webpage has to say:

The Caroline County Department of Public Works provides a variety of services to assure that residents of, visitors to, and those who work in Caroline County, are provided an enjoyable and safe quality of life. The Public Works Department currently provides the following services:

• Solid Waste disposal and collection, and recycling. Caroline County curtailed the operation of its landfill, and closed the facility. Municipal Solid Waste collected from the County’s Solid Waste Convenience Sites, which are strategically located throughout the County to permit easy access for all residents to dispose of wastes, will be disposed of at the BFI Landfill in Henrico County. All sites have recycling bins and the County encourages recycling by all residents and started aggressive recycling and litter control programs in January of 2001.
• County Facilities Maintenance: The Public Works Department maintains all County facilities and properties, including Park maintenance and field maintenance for the County’s Recreational Program. The Public Works Department also constructs new parks and recreational facilities under the County’s Mini Park Program.
• Facilities Planning, Design and Construction: The Public Works Department plans for and coordinates all facility design and construction. These services include in-house design and construction of small projects and construction management of larger projects.

The Public Works Department works closely with the Departments of Planning & Community Development and Economic Development to assure that development in the County occurs in accordance with the Comprehensive Plan, and to the benefit of the County.

The Caroline County Public Works Office is located at 104 South Main Street in Bowling, Green Virginia, across from Storke’s Funeral Home. Office hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

SOLID WASTE & RECYCLING: If you have questions regarding the disposal of solid waste or recycling please contact the Public Works Office at: (804) 633-4386 – Monday through Friday, 8:30a.m. to 5:00p.m.

A list of the Caroline County Solid Waste Convenience Sites is provided below for your information. Effective July 19, 2010, all Convenience Sites will be open from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday, 9:00 am until 5:00 pm on Saturdays, and 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm on Sundays.

Holidays: All Collection Sites will be closed on Wednesdays, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. All other holidays the sites will open on the regular schedule.

I don’t know him personally, but Consumer Attorney Mitchell Goldstein is offering a free seminar in Ladysmith on a number of interesting issues.  The seminar is on January 26th from 7pm until 8pm  at the Ladysmith Professional Building.  The information below is from his website:

Did Christmas Make You Feel Like A Horder?

Ok, so I admit that I have watched at least one episode of Horders and felt like my own (very clean and roomy) house was going to collapse in on me.  But I, like most people, watch that show and start to feel really good about ourselves – and then Christmas came.   More stuff..  We purged a lot of stuff before Christmas and then again after.  Some of it went to GoodWill, some to FreeCycle, etc…  Our girls outgrew stuff or we get upgraded stuff, and then we needed to find somewhere else for it.

The Coldwell Banker video is pretty funny, but funny in a way that hits home for a lot of people.  For the first time, we had family that actually stayed somewhere other than our home because of space issues.  That wasn’t fun at all.  It changed a bit of our family dynamic and made me start to feel like we needed to review how we’re using our space.  It may even lead us to looking at finally finishing that unfinished basement.

Don’t get me wrong…  We don’t think everyone should move in this market, but with interest rates and home prices so low, if you need to expand, now is the time to do it.

I love this piece of furniture! I saw it at a listing a few months ago.  It’s a table! It’s a game! And it has two little cushioned tuffets! It something a little different with a touch of class and fun all at the same time!

Do you have a special piece of furniture in your home that is multifunctional? Or do you have a creative use of space that would be mentioned in Better Homes and Gardens if they know about it? Another year has gone and I’m left wondering if it’s just me or was it only a few weeks ago that we started saying 2011?

As I’m reflecting back on 2011, I’m trying to remember all that we did. Did we make a difference? What lessons did we learn that we can apply to 2012? How can we remember all the good times?

A quick look back at the calendar and I was amazed to see all that we had done…

In January, after ringing in the New Year at the Riverside Dinner Theatre, the neighbors took the girls ice-skating in Richmond. If you miss the rink in Fredericksburg, you might want to check it out. I hear the season is SUPER SHORT this year! And don’t forget hit the Starbucks inside the Marriott when you’re finished!

We participated in the Chili Cook-Off at our local REALTOR® Association in Fredericksburg. We didn’t win with our kid-friendly chili, but we had a good time for a great cause!

In February, Matthew turned 36 (the first time he actually “felt” his age). A highlight for him was attended a father/daughter dessert night in which the kids were stuffed with sweets and they listened to a message on family relationships.  

In March we went to the Coldwell Banker Convention in Las Vegas. Matthew stayed busy with Coldwell Banker training and information. I took lots of classes and spent half a day getting a new phone after my Blackberry died! I was introduced to the wonderful world of iPhone!

March also had the girls attending a tea party where the girls made cookies for a church family-member that was stationed in Afghanistan at the time.

April was our Easter Vacation to the beach. It was a little cool, but a wonderful chance to relax by the ocean!

May was the annual National Association of REALTORS® Conference in DC. That gave us more training, more legislation, more mingling with representatives. I also rode the public bus for the first time ever – and by myself – and did not get lost!

Another memorable experience was the long weekend at my parents’ home cleaning out the attic and around the yard. Note to our clients: do not wait 20 years before cleaning out that shed or attic! We had to order 2 HUGE dumpsters to get rid of the items. Needless to say, it was a great stroll down memory lane.

Or you might try when it’s time to de-clutter is to have a FREE yard sale! Tell everyone on Freecycle what day and time, and tell them to come and take anything they want from the front yard!

June was the annual Homeschool Convention in Richmond, which is one of my favorite times of the year! I love buying new curriculum and literature! We get to catch up with friends, get away to talk about the kids, and hear wonderful teachings. June was also the beginning of a two-month break from teaching.

Little did I know how important that break would be with the coming school year and our oldest entering high school! Even though she is homeschooled, there is still the need to keep up with information for college transcripts, grading reports, and shuttling them off to extra-curricular activities – which will also go on those transcripts!

My baby turned 9 and we took her to the Riverside Dinner Theatre to see Sally Struthers in Hello Dolly. Talk about funny!

We went to the Family Fun Day in Ladysmith where Matthew volunteered to sit in the dunking booth to earn money to build a new local YMCA.

The girls started school the week of August 22nd and we jumped into a crazy year of co-op classes and guitar classes as well as our regularly scheduled lessons. It took some time to tweak the schedule to get everything to fit. I’m still amazed that there are families more active than ours that do so much more – like sports and Cub Scouts! A once-a-month youth group is hard to squeeze in at times.

After school started, our middle child turned 12 – boy, I’m feeling old! Where’s that treadmill and caffeine??? The girls and I tried our hand at the driving range, but found we went through a large bucket too quickly to make it worth our while.

Our church had a week of prayer and fasting for our community – the same week I had scheduled to take the girls to the Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg! Yep, give me a pat on the back, I took 5 girls for 3 days/2 nights to Williamsburg. We spent one day in Colonial Williamsburg and a day and a half at the Lodge.

October was the state REALTOR® conference – yes, we have a lot of conferences and lots of training! We returned to Virginia Beach this year and the weather was wonderful! Matthew and I took more than one walk on the Boardwalk! We always have a great time together, but this was a great opportunity to develop some more memories together.

November brought the Coldwell Banker Elite annual trip to the Montpelier Hunt Races where I can’t seem to get a good photos of the horses no matter what I try! After that was a field trip to the American Girl store in Tyson’s Corner for lunch.

November also brought the Thanksgiving holiday with family and a trip to the emergency room for stitches for our middle daughter. Never a dull moment in the Rathbun Home…

And here we are again in December. I’ve become a master at ordering online, which keeps me from impulse buying when I shop and also saves on gas. Almost everything was free shipping this year too! We made several gingerbread homes – none of which stood the test of time (time being defined as 10 minutes).

Our oldest was in the Co-op choir and a play about how the birth of Jesus might have been if it had happened during the wild west. She also turned 14. Sigh…

We had our first instrumental performance. They played the first four-line melody of “Ode to Joy” and the harmony (if I have my terminology correct) of a Taylor Swift song. All the girls were in Guitar 1 with Fredericksburg Area Young Musicians. We survived our first semester and look forward to more progress in the 2nd semester!

Christmas and New Year’s will be an exciting time and we’ll enjoy relaxing and laughing with family and friends and taking a few days off.

Hmmm… Anything else???

Well, I started recycling this year when our previous trash contract ended. I still know very little how the process works, but I’m hoping that we are creating more American jobs with recycling and the need for more water to rinse off the cans and bottles.

We had several community parties, baby and bridal showers, weddings, date nights, etc… Along with helping our sellers and wrapping up our closings for our buyers, Matthew’s national speaking requests and working for Coldwell Banker Elite, it’s no wonder it seems like the year just started!
