Coloring sketches in Photoshop

Mês passado me chamaram para escrever um pequeno artigo para uma revista, sobre música e ilustração. Como este é um assunto que eu adoro, eu escrevi o texto bem rapidinho! Para ilustrar a mini-matéria, escolhi alguns antigos rascunhos meus inspirados em letras de músicas. Como a Computer Arts possui a direção de arte bem colorida, resolvi pintar os desenhos, deixando a composição mais alegre. Normalmente, como vocês sabem, eu vou lá vetorizo tudo, pintando no illustrator. Mas dessa vez a agenda estava apertada e resolvi experimentar algo que raramente faço: colorir livremente no photoshop mesmo.

Last month I was invited to write a small article for a magazine, about music and illustration. This is a topic that I love, so I wrote the text in a heartbeat! To illustrate the article, I chose some sketches I made a while ago, inspired by music lyrics. Because Computer Arts has such a colorful art direction, I decided to paint the drawings, making the overall composition happier. Normally, as you already know, I would vectorize everything, painting the shapes in illustrator. But this time the schedule was so tight that I chose to experiment painting directly into photoshop.

Como vocês podem notar, as cores foram adicionadas bem livremente, sem respeitar muito os contornos das formas. A ideia era ser algo bem solto e sem compromisso. Utilizei os blending modes do photoshop, como multiply, color, hue, difference… Não tem fórmula mágica (bom, pelo menos eu não conheço!): fui adicionando as cores com brushes e seleções, e testando qual o blending funcionava melhor para aquela camada.

As you will notice, the colors were added freely, without respecting the shapes outlines. The idea was to make something very loose and without compromise. I used the Photoshop blending modes, like multiply, color, hue, difference… There isn’t a magic formula (well, not that I know of!): I added the colors with brushes and masks, testing wich blending mode worked the best for that layer.

Um bom tempo atrás meu site saiu em um livro bem maneiro, chamado Web Design Index by Content. Mas ando tão na correria, que só criei vergonha na cara de fotografá-lo agora Fiquei feliz, pois era um livro cujas edições anteriores eu sempre espiava no trabalho. Obrigada Fernanda e Dani, por terem me ajudado na programação do site!

A while ago my website was featured in a cool book named Web Design Index by Content. I was really happy to be a part of this book, mostly because I always leafed through the past editions at work for inspiration. Thanks again Fernanda and Dani, for helping me coding this layout!

Que tal mais um making of? O deste post é de uma ilustração que fiz no começo do ano, para um estúdio americano chamado Sugar Ink Design. No post eu mostro a ilustração que a Teri (sócia do estúdio) achou na internet e adorou, os 3 sketches que eu fiz, algumas etapas do vetor e algumas dicas. Clica aqui e lê tudo!

The Reference

Para quem acompanha meu blog há um bom tempo, vai lembrar que uma versão antiga dele era com este layout abaixo. Era uma época que eu estava fazendo muita coisa no estilo hand drawn, inspirada num livro que tinha amado, coisa que eu deveria voltar a fazer (…mas os vetores conquistaram meu coração de jeito). A cliente entrou em contato comigo, querendo fazer uma ilustração exatamente nesta linha, com as mesmas cores, formas e texturas.

If you read my blog for a long time, you’ll remember that one of its old versions used this illo below. I was doing a lot of hand drawing illustration back then, inspired by a book named hand drawn type. I should go back on doing more hand drawn stuff… but I just love vectors so much! The client wrote me, telling me that she wanted an illustration just like this one, with the same shapes, colors and textures.

The Sketch #01

Mas eu não queria fazer simplesmente uma cópia, quando faço uma ilustração para um cliente, por mais que utilize elementos abstratos e formas geométricas, procuro sempre capturar o máximo do cliente no desenho, traduzindo em imagem a personalidade da marca dele. Neste primeiro rascunho fiz um sketch bem parecido com a referência.

But I didn’t wanted to just make a copy, when I do an illustration for a cliente, even though I use abstract and geometric elements, I strive to capture the clients essence into the drawing, using images to communicate the brands concepts. In this first rough I did a sketch really similar to the reference given.

The Sketch #02

Neste segundo sketch procurei fazer algo mais solto e limpo, similar ao que tenho feito ultimamente.
In this second sketch I wanted to do something loose and clean, similar to what I’ve been drawing lately.

The Sketch #03

Para o sketch 03 eu procurei fazer um meio termo entre o estilo antigo e o estilo novo. Acabei não curtindo tanto, fiquei tão presa a tentar fazer isto ou aquilo, que a composição ficou dura, sem muito movimento.

For the sketch # 03 I tried to make s0mething between the old style and the new style. I didn’t liked so much, I was so concerned in making this or that, that the comp got a bit stiff, without movement.

The initial vector

A cliente aprovou a primeira opção, pedindo algumas alterações, como o frame onde iria a marca. Vetorizei toda a composição em preto e branco, para me focar mais nas formas primeiramente.

The client approved the first option, asking for some changes, like the frame where the logo would go. I vectorized the whole composition in black and white first, to focus mainly on the shapes.

The final vector

Depois de terminado a vetorização, comecei a pintar a ilustração. Procurei utilizar uma paleta similar a ilustração que ela enviou de referência, pois era o que ela mais curtia na composição.

After I finished the vector process, I started to paint the illo. I used a similar palette from the illustration she sent as reference, because it was one of the things she liked the most in the comp.

Textures

Não sei vocês, mas ao mesmo tempo que eu amo a limpeza matemática de um vetor, ela também me irrita. Por isso sempre que eu termino a ilustração no illustrator, eu pesquiso algumas texturas e brushes com um estilo mais grunge, para tirar o aspecto muito certinho do desenho. Gosto de brincar com layers em blending mode soft light, overlay e multiply, e com texturas de papel antigo, papel amassado e concreto. O legal é você estar atento ao seu redor, caminhar sempre com uma máquina, e ir construindo o seu banco de texturas, único e original. Mas claro que nem sempre dá tempo, então não se preocupe: na web você também acha vários sites com texturas free para uso comercial.

I don’t know about you, but I have a sort of love and hate relationship with vectors. I love that everything is so neat… but that also bugs me. Because of that I usually edit the final illustration in photoshop, adding brushes with a grungy sort of look and feel, to remove the clean aspect of the drawing. I like to play with overlay, multiply and soft light blending modes, and with old paper, crumpled paper and concrete textures. My tip is for you to carry always a camera with you, and snap pictures of interesting textures that you find in your daily life, building your own unique texture resource folder. But if you can’t do that, don’t worry: the web is full of great websites with lots of cool textures available for commercial use.

Photoshop

Como disse anteriormente, para dar um ar vintage à ilustra, editei ela no photoshop, colocando texturas, brushes e efeitos.
Like I said, to add a vintage feel to the illo, I edited it into photoshop, adding textures, brushes and effects.

A porquinha-alada (que cegonha que nada! hehe) nos pegou de surpresa no início desse ano. Descobri que eu e meu marido vamos ser pais Se tudo der certo será um bebê de primavera e hoje descobrimos que será uma menina! Yay estamos muito felizes.

The flying pig (much funnier than a stork, lol) caught us by surprise this year. I found out that me and my husband are going to be parents! It will be a spring baby and today we found out that it’s a girl! Yay, we are very happy.

Sou famosa entre meus amigos e família pelo meu senso de localização inexistente. Por isso, achei muito engraçado ser convidada pelo pessoal da Computer Arts (obrigada Nathalie!) para ilustrar um mapa: sou daquelas pessoas que segura o mapa de cabeça para baixo, dirige para o norte achando que está indo para o sul e se perde dentro de um shopping center. I’m famous between friends and family for not having a sense of direction. Because of that I found it very funny to be invited by the folks at Computer Arts to illustrate a map: I’m one of those people that holds a map upside down, drive north thinking that is traveling south and get lost inside a mall. Florianópolis é uma ilha linda, adoro morar aqui. A cidade se destaca pela sua beleza natural, possuindo aproximadamente 100 praias. Seu litoral é bastante recortado, com várias enseadas, pontas, ilhas, baías e lagoas. Com isto em mente, iniciei o processo criativo focando na sua natureza exuberante, nos esportes ao ar livre e na cultura açoriana.

Florianópolis is a lovely island, I love living here. The city is known for its natural beauty, having approximately 100 beaches. Its shore is very irregular, with lots of coves, islands, bays and lagoons. With that in mind, I started the creative process, focusing on it’s wild nature, outdoorsy sports and Azorean culture.

Em seguida comecei a pensar em uma forma de agrupar toda essa informação de forma interessante no layout, com o desafio de encaixar a forma alongada e estreita da cidade no tamanho horizontal disponível. Minha solução foi dispensar o modelo tradicional de mapas com proporções reais e ruas detalhadas, e fazer uma proposta abstrata, com folhas e flores representando a natureza, e uma estrutura final que remete à uma ilha cercada de mar.

After that I started to think about a way to group all this info into an interesting layout, with the challenge of fitting floripa’s vertical shape into the horizontal available space. My solution was to ditch the traditional map format, with real proportions and detailed streets, and make an abstract proposal, with flowers and leaves, representing the nature, and a final estructure that reminds a island surrounded by sea.

Depois de selecionado o melhor rascunho, iniciei um sketch a lápis mais detalhado, que serviria de base para uma finalização posterior no illustrator. Terminada a vetorização, criei uma paleta para a cidade, que envolvia as cores que na minha opinião melhor simbolizam a cidade: amarelo, marrom, azul e verde. Depois de colorir a ilustração, fiz alguns ajustes de cor e brilho no photoshop, onde também adicionei brushes e texturas.

After I selected the best rough, I started a detailed sketch, that would serve as a base to a post production in illustrator. Once I finished vectorizing, I created a palette for the city, that used the colors that in my opinion better symbolized the city: yellow, brown, blue and green. After I colored the illo, I made some adjustments of shadow and lights on photoshop, where I also added some brushes and textures.

Para minha alegria hoje em dia existem smartphones com gps que facilitam a vida de perdidos como eu. Minha proposta é um guia ilustrado pessoal, feito por uma pessoa local, que procura capturar a atmosfera da cidade e que deve ser usado em conjunto com estes recursos modernos de localização. O resultado final ficou minha representação lúdica de Floripa, como eu enxergo essa bela cidade.

Luckily for me there are now smart phones with gps that help the life of lost like me. My proposal is a personal illustrated map, made by a local, that tries to capture the city’s atmosphere and that should be used together with this modern location devices. The final result is my playful representation of Floripa, how I see this lovely city.

Ontem no almoço ameaçou cair um temporal, e eu tive a ideia de testar o aparelhinho de time lapse que meu marido comprou. No final das contas a chuva nem foi tão grande, o time lapse nem ficou tão legal, mas valeu para já ir aprendendo como ele funciona. O vídeo mostra em 15 segundos quase 4 horas. Da próxima vez quero testar com um pôr do sol e com a cidade se iluminando!

Yesterday at lunch I thought that a big storm was coming so I ran to test my husband new time lapse gadget. Unfortunately the rain wasn’t so heavy and the time lapse didn’t turned out so cool like I expected, but at least I got to test the gadget. The video condenses 4 hours into 15 seconds. Next time I want to try it with a sunset!

Por um 2012 bem colorido!

Meu final do ano passado foi muito corrido, mas mesmo assim decidi fazer uma festinha de reveillon aqui em casa para a família e amigos próximos. Queria alegrar a minha mãe e minha tia, celebrar o novo emprego da minha irmã, comemorar o ano legal da minha amiga Renatinha e uma bela novidade da minha amiga Nani. Even though I was really busy last december, I decided to host a new years eve party at my house, to family and close friends. I wanted to cheer my mom and aunt, celebrate my sister’s new job, commemorate an awesome year that my friend Renata had and a special occasion in my friend nani’s life. Eu tenho uma sorte danada, minhas melhores amigas são muito talentosas: são ótimas ilustradoras, crafters e cozinheiras. Ao conversarmos sobre a festa decidimos que nosso briefing seria: feito à mão, barato e cool. E a paleta de cores seria amarelo, branco e dourado (escolhi essas cores porque as adoro, mas se elas chamarem dimdim para 2012… melhor ainda!)

I’m so lucky to have immensely talented best friends: they are great illustrators, crafters and cooks. As we planned the party, we decided that our decoration briefing would be: handcraft, low cost and cool. The color palette should be yellow, white and gold (I love those colors!)

Decidimos então fazer flower bombs (tutorial aqui), estrelas de origami, ilustrações para porta retratos e para as paredes, balões no teto, balões de fala e bandeirinhas. Para completar, pisca-piscas, velinhas, moedinhas, flores, sal e arruda. O resultado final ficou muito bonito, alegre e leve, combinando com uma festa no brasil e no verão. E o melhor: super baratinho!

We decided to create flower bombs (tutorial), origami stars, illustrations for photo frames and walls, ballons, cartoon speech bubbles and party flags. To complete, string of lights, candles, coins, flowers, salt and Herb-of-Grace. The final result was so pretty, upbeat and light, perfect for a brazilian summer party. And the best part: super cheap!

Flower Bombs, origamis, bandeirinhas, balões…

A folha grande de papel seda para fazer as flores, por exemplo, custa a partir de 10 centavos. Tudo bem que você usa pelo menos 10 folhas para fazer uma flor grande, mesmo assim continua muito em conta. Penduramos com um barbante, que é um material barato, e fizemos um acabamento no teto com lacinhos reaproveitados de presentes do natal.

The tissue paper used to make the flowers, for instance, costs 7 cents. Ok, you’ll need at least 10 sheets to make a big flower, but it is still very much affordable. We placed them with a twine, that is a cheap resource, and we finished with a lace on the ceiling, from reused xmas gifts.

Usei porquinhos amarelos e brancos na decoração também.

O legal de você mesmo criar a decoração com seus amigos, é que você já vai se divertindo fazendo uma festa antes da festa. E a parte boa de uma decoração mais clean, é que você não precisa tirá-la imediatamente após a festa. Eu mesma estou me fazendo de louca, e só vou tirar as flores e bandeirinhas quando enjoar.

The best part of creating handmade decorations is you start having fun with your friends before the party! And the cool part about a clean decoration, is that you don’t have to remove it right after the party. I’m actually planning on keeping the flowers and the party flames until I get tired of them.

Uma folha para os convidados escreverem o que desejam para o ano que se inicia.

Nós gastamos em torno de 100 reais (que dividido entre várias pessoas fica bem em conta) e demoramos dois dias para preparar tudo. Se vocês tiverem alguma curiosidade ou dúvida sobre a decoração, é só perguntar nos comentários. E vocês, onde passaram o reveillon?

Mesmo com o final de ano super corrido, fiz questão de encontrar um tempinho e fazer um post desejando um ótimo 2012 para vocês. 2011 foi um ano de muitos contrastes: tive muitas alegrias, mas também passei por momentos bem tristes. Espero que o próximo ano traga bastante sabedoria para que eu saiba aproveitar e valorizar os bons momentos e amadurecer com os ruins. Um abração e boas festas!

Even with a super busy december, I just had to make a holiday card to my dear blog readers and wish you all an awesome 2012. 2011 was a strange year for me: I had a lot to be thankful for but I’ve also been through some very sad moments. I wish next year brings me wisdom to enjoy and value the happy moments in life and to grow with the bad moments. Seasons Greetings and ho ho hoink!
