GOODBYE AVEO...HELLO EXORA

As the proud owner of a 6 years old Aveo Chevolet, I love my car to bits. It has never given me any major problems nor breakdown on me. It never strikes me to replace it until my hubby mentions it. He says once a car crosses the 5 year old mark, it's high time to get a new one but my answer is always "let me think about it first!"...

Hubby knows I love driving big cars and suggests to get an Exora (reasonably priced and looks good too) but I hardly fancy Proton cars. It's not about the price, it more of its performance. I told him I rather buy a Perodua car than a Proton. I have been checking around on other cars but not really enthusiastic about it...

Anyhow, it was finally time to decide either to get a new car or to keep my old buddy. We have shortlisted a few like Mazda2, Exora and Alza cos these are the latest models on the road...

The first car which, I've tested was the Madza2. It comes in 2 designs : sedan and hatchback. Hubby likes the hatchback but I prefer the sedan cos it suits my age and I don't like flashy and eye catching cars ;-)) After having tested the Madza2 and before I even test drove the Alza and Exora, I told my hubby perhaps I should get the Alza (with Toyota's technology). Hubby gave a fierce NO and said, "don't tell me or decide anything now before you test drive the other two cars"....hehe!

Without wasting any more time, I hurriedly fixed appointments to test drive the Alza and Exora on the same day itself. Disappointingly, I didn't feel good driving the Alza. And what surprised me was that the performance of the Exora truly captivated me. Prior to all these, I had never given the slightest consideration until I tested the car myself. The feeling of maneuvering it was superb. The interior of the car is spacious and I really loved it..

But then, do I really need a seven-seater car??? Hubby assures me that a seven-seater car doesn't mean it needs to ferry 7 persons all the time - very true indeed..haha! . He says as long as I like it, go ahead buy it and I will...:-)

Goodbye my long-time green buddy, Aveo...I'd definitely miss you..

Firstly I think I have to address the actual dimensions of the car, because when you buy an MPV what you are looking for is essentially a big box to fit your family in. There has been some revision to the data that Proton provided us during the prototype test drive (particularly the weight, which is now heavier - 1422kg for M-Line and 1442kg for H-Line). Here are the final specs of the Exora in comparison to its competitors.

The power figures above are quoted in horsepower, which has been converted from most of the “PS” measurements that Japanese companies use. As you can see the weight is now heavier, which would throw off all our previous calculations on the Exora’s power to weight ratio.

The Exora’s 125 horsepower has to pull 1422kg of weight now which means 11.376kg per horsepower, which is actually one of the better performing numbers among its competitors unfortunately the amount of weight that each Newton Meter has to pull is one of the worst. It’s the amount of torque and the torque curve that matters when it comes to pulling a lot of weight.

The third and second row of Proton Exora can be arranged in so many formation due to its ability to be folded and really carries the name of Multi purpose Vehicle with the function to fit big and many stuff there in Proton Exora. At third row, you will not have to sit like on the floor because it is quite high of seat height. The leg room is good for a person around 178cm high. At front row, no complain at all.. Spacious. Same with the second row seat.

Today's growing number of 7 seater cars have to be the way to go when you need enough room to comfortably carry a growing family. Gone are the days when you would get squished in the back seat with your 2 or 3 brothers or sisters, even sharing seatbelts to make room. Today's MPV, SUVs and CUVs make it easy to carry a lot of passengers.

Once you start looking for one though, you'll realize that there are so many to choose from... when I did a quick search I found a total of 204 in the United States! Which one is going to meet your family's needs best?

I think the best way to start your search is to determine the type of car that you need regardless of the number of seats. Let's take a look at the type of cars that are available in today's car market.

One of the best known types of vehicles is the traditional family sedan which is usually a 4 door vehicle that carries usually 4 or more passengers. In 2009, the most passenger room that I could find in a sedan was 5. So today's fuel economical sedan isn't going to fit the bill with our need for 7 seats. In the past that need was filled with the station wagon but today's station wagon is the MPV (multi-passenger vehicle) better known as the mini van.

If your needs consist of a light duty MPV that is going to cart the family around to after school activities the mini van makes a good choice. Most vans will get decent fuel mileage of 20 to 25 MPG. There are even some new hybrid models that combine gas and electricity to get mileage into the 30 and 40 miles per gallon category. However if you're going to be driving the family around in rough weather, like snow, you may be better suited to drive a SUV or sports utility vehicle.

Proton Exora Base Line (B-Line) basic version is now open for booking with the affordable, value for money & cheapest MPV price in Malaysia of only from RM 57,458.

This will give exora a better point to compete with the latest Perodua Alza MPV which launched on 23 November 2009 with the price range between RM56k to RM65k. Below are a few picture of exora base line basic model.

With steel rims and rim cover only. The rear garnish is not painted and not in chrome like other variant. Exora basic has no spoiler.

The unexpected for basic model of Proton this time with painted bumper. Not like other basic model bumper without paint. Some safety features like passenger airbag, ABS and EBD is not available for this exora base line.
