CarTech Authors at Petersen Automotive Museum Book Signing

The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles has announced that it will host its first Automotive Authors Book Signing on Saturday, Oct. 29.

The event, which will benefit the museum’s library and educational programs, will give automotive enthusiasts the chance to meet their favorite automotive book authors. The authors will discuss the history of the automobile, in addition to talking about their own books and experiences, according to the museum.

Among the authors will be Pat Ganahl, author of Lost Hot Rods: Remarkable Stories of How They Were Found, and Michael Harrington, author of Rusty Pickups: American Workhorses Put to Pasture.

The authors will be introduced and give their presentations in the museum’s Racing Corridor from 2–3 p.m. The book signing will run from 3–5 p.m. in the museum’s Grand Salon.

CarTech Editor Wins Real Street Eliminator Competition

CarTech Editor Scott Parkhurst and his 1967 Chevelle Wagon (yes, wagon) took home the gold in this year's Car Craft Summer Nationals "Real Street Eliminator" competition.

Scott's car made 579 horsepower and 594 ft-lbs of torque at the rear wheels on the dyno run. He scored a 4.26 in the speed-stop, actually setting a new record! The launchbox was a 130-foot launch and stop within a small box at the end. Scott finished fourth overall on the unbelievably tight autocross course.

All this earned Scott and his '67 Chevelle Wagon enough points to win first place in the pre-1985 muscle car class.

David Vizard Seminars

The University of Northwestern Ohio and Engine Builder Magazine have teamed up to sponsor a weekend seminar presented by engine guru and CarTech author David Vizard. The seminar is scheduled to begin the evening of Friday, March 11 through the mid-afternoon of Sunday, March 13, 2011.

The “How to Build Horsepower” seminar is about how to find additional output from high performance and competition engines by dealing with what Vizard calls "combinations." He claims that a pile of "trick" parts do not make a winning engine, rather it is about finding the perfect combination and optimization of individual engine components.

Throughout the seminar Vizard will discuss the secret to optimal intake-to-exhaust flow ratios, why making more Dyno Horsepower may be a mistake, how you can win races by slowing down the rest of the field, and what the most important number is when dealing with camshafts.

Chrysler Concept Cars Reviewed

Thank you to Alex Moore and ForeWord Magazine for an excellent review of Chrysler Concept Cars 1940-1970, by David Fetherston and Tony Thacker.

In Chrysler Concept Cars 1940-1970, David Fetherston, author of numerous books including American Woody, and Tony Thacker, former editor of Custom Car magazine, present three decades of innovative car designs that followed the Airflow fiasco. The new designs were to represent Chrysler’s philosophy that beauty should be the “sheer by-product of engineering integrity.” The most significant concept car of the forties was the Golden Arrow. Streamlining was used, but tastefully tempered. The Golden Arrow incorporated a double cowl with visible fender seams, and its art was to later emerge in the Chrysler Imperial parade car.
