Azumanga Daioh chronicles everyday life in an unnamed Japanese high school in Tokyo,[10] following the trials and triumphs of six girls: reserved Sakaki's obsession with cute animals, Chiyo's struggle to fit in with girls five years older, Osaka's spacey nature and skewed perspective on the world, Yomi's aggravation at an annoying best friend, Tomo, whose energy is rivaled only by her lack of sense, and Kagura's efforts in sports and school. The story covers three years of tests, culture festivals, and athletic events at school, after-school life at the nearby shopping district, at Chiyo's large house, vacations spent at Chiyo's summer home on the beach and at Magic Land, a theme park. It is generally realistic in tone, marked by occasional bursts of surrealism and absurdity, such as Osaka's bizarre imaginings and an episode featuring the characters' New Year's dreams.

The manga and anime follow the same story line, though there are differences in small details.[11] Some jokes could not be dramatized as written and were either changed or excised completely. In the first manga volume, Osaka's appearance is noticeably different from in the anime and succeeding manga volumes. The main character, Gorō Mutsumi, has no luck at all, not with jobs, nor with his schooling, and especially not with women or girlfriends. That is until the day he meets a fortune teller who informs him that he will have a fateful encounter and gives him a cell phone with which she promises his luck will change for good. Gorō does not believe her as she just vanishes as he remembers all of his previous times of bad luck with women.

It is then seen that he meets three girls who are waiting for him back at his apartment. They say they are now his Guardian Angels, sent to Earth from the spirit realm by the Goddess. They are the first three of his twelve beloved pets who had died due to Gorō's poor luck, returning to him on earth.

Soon after more and more of his former pets return to him as guardian angels, and each desires to be seen as number one in his heart, as his favorite pet. Each also has fears which they must overcome, fears from their past lives, for to overcome them and to learn to live with each other as one big family is the only way they will ever stand a chance of helping Gorō turn his life around and gain some good luck that his life was missing.

These girls however are not the only ones on earth, because of Gorō's own past life, because of what he was in another time and another place, there are strange people out there trying to put a stop to these girls turning his luck around. For their own reasons, these people fear Gorō and desire him out of the way. As the story progresses the girls learn they must protect Gorō not only from his own bad luck but from these other people, without fully understanding either who they are or why they want to harm their beloved master (from wikipedia).

Daisuke Niwa is a 14 year-old-boy who has a special genetic ability: Whenever he sees or thinks about his crush, Risa Harada, he turns into the infamous phantom thief Dark. During the start of the anime, Daisuke carries a picture of Risa Harada in his back pocket for such occasion. This will continue until his crush learns to love both him and Dark.

Satoshi Hiwatari is a student at the same school as Daisuke and the Harada twins and also the Commander of the police force, heading the investigation on Dark. This is because he is a member of the Hikari family, a clan of artists which has opposed the Niwa family of thieves for centuries. Satoshi has Krad, Dark's opposite and, like him, part of the Hikari artwork "Black Wings", within him in much the same way Daisuke has Dark within him.

Interestingly enough, Risa falls in love with Dark, and proceeds to do all sort of absurd things to get him to go out with her, which he eventually does. She has also kissed him on more than one occasion, and it is hinted that Dark loves Risa; but Dark claims that he does not love her, and that (according to the anime) Risa's grandmother, Rika, is the only woman he has ever loved. In the manga, Dark's reasons for rejecting Risa seem to be so that she is not hurt by the fact that he is immortal and not really human, and therefore cannot participate in a functional relationship. As expected, Risa doesn't really listen to him and continues to try to get him to go out with her.

During much of the plot, Satoshi Hiwatari's (adoptive) father, who is a high ranking Police Officer, happens to butt in, and ruin a few of Hiwatari's plans to capture Dark. His father also plans to capture Dark himself. But Dark and Daisuke always manage to escape his plans (from Wikipedia).

The anime has many differences from the manga. The story begins in much of the same way. Rena wins a limited edition character model contest for The World. She invites her twin brother Shugo to play the character legendary Kite while she plays as the legendary Blackrose. On their first outing together, the duo meet a gigantic level 48 "Super Armored Shogun" in a beginners area. Shugo is killed by the monster, but is revived by a mysterious girl named Aura. As well as reviving Shugo, Aura gives him a mysterious bracelet and tells him about Data Drain. Shugo is transported outside to find the monster still rampaging after his sister. He takes Aura's advice and uses Data Drain and the large monster is reduced to a very weak beginner’s monster. It is realized that Data Drain can rewrite data. Shugo and Rena embark on a quest to unravel the mysterious bracelet's secrets and locate Aura. Along the way, Rena and Shugo meet new friends like the peppy Mireille, the fierce Ouka, the quiet Hotaru, and the veteran player Sanjuro. Together, the friends play together in The World, but the fun quickly ends when Rena is killed by a monster and goes into a coma. Shugo and friends frantically search for a solution, whilst a group of four children are planning something terrible on the outside world. To make matters worse, the Cobalt Knight brigade, a debugging team for CC Corp, are determined to capture Shugo for he is using an illegal item, Aura's bracelet. Not only that, but an administrator that had been helping look for Rena, Balmung, loses his position as administrator and makes things difficult to continue the search. Then Shugo and company finally reach a mysterious place where Rena might be, but are met by a mysterious AI who systematically annihilates the Cobalt Knight brigade, save for its leader Kamui. Using the bracelet and a little help from an inside ally, the group finally locates the source of the problem and proceed to stop it. They transport themselves to a root town that is not open to others and are confronted by the AI along with an undefeatable monster. To make the situation even more dire, the monster has Rena trapped inside it and has implanted a virus that will destroy all that Rena has connections to. Shugo manages to data drain the monster, but The World will be destroyed. Awaiting the destruction, the group speculates the reappearance of Kite's and Blackrose's characters. They realize there must have been a reason why both characters were brought back instead of just one. Rena and Shugo then activate Blackrose's and Kite's joint power and save The World (from wikipedia).

A manga series based on the visual novel was first serialized in the Japanese magazine Comptiq and published by Kadokawa Shoten; the manga ran between August 10, 2004 and February 10, 2006 and was illustrated by Japanese artist Yukimaru Katsura. A thirteen-episode anime series created by Kyoto Animation aired in Japan between January 6, 2005 and March 31, 2005. A subsequent release of two episodes entitled Air in Summer aired on August 28, 2005 and September 4, 2005.
