Friends don’t let friends live with ugly fireplaces

I've been obsessing over real estate sites lately in anticipation of our impending move to Houston. We still don't have a date but we have a general time frame of approximately June.

One thing I know is that I think I'd like an older home because of the maturity of the neighborhoods I'm seeing. I desperately want mature trees in a beautifully shaded neighborhood, something we've missed greatly since moving to DFW. In searching these areas, I'm finding a lot of homes with HUGE makeover potential...and really UGLY fireplaces. Don't get me wrong, I do not hate brick (and goodness knows, Texas loves their brick) but an entire wall of it dating back to the 1970's may be a little much for me. Floor to ceiling, a little much for me. Covered in years of smokey soot...absolutely a little much for me.

I am so excited to be working with new clients that I have been corresponding with since last summer! They're young and hip and just the cutest family and they've been in their house for a year now and are finally ready to put their stamp on it and really make it feel like home.

They've hired me to help them with their main living area and their master bedroom and I couldn't be more thrilled to be working within such great "bones". The spaces are light and airy with beautiful light and my idea file is spilling over. So while I've been in the process the past few days of putting together some design boards for them, I thought I'd share some of the spaces that have inspired my suggestions for the master bedroom: (click here to see more)

I can't recall if I've ever mentioned it on my blog or not but one little factoid about me is that I have never lived anywhere in my life for more than 5 years. Actually, 5 years is the record which was set in 1999 but the standard for me seems to be more like 4 years. I usually find that somewhere around the 3rd year, details in my life begin to wiggle, usually subtly but sometimes, not. It's not always obvious but after 40 something years I've learned to watch for whatever it is and expect a change. A family member once told me that we had gypsy ancestors and while this was probably meant as a joke, I sometimes wonder...(click here to read more)
