According to the conservators of the Smithsonian Institution, photographs are the most likely items to be grabbed first when a home is being threatened by fire. Therefore, it is recommended that you duplicate and digitize.

Here are some guidelines and resources to get you started:

1. SCAN YOUR PHOTOS.

Rather than buying a basic scanner and spending hours and days (chancing that the project doesn’t get finished), I recommend hiring a company that offers this service. After researching and contacting a few, I decided to compare scanning services by www.gophoto.com and www.scanmyphotos.com. When comparing rates, try using google to do a search for coupons.

- They have a simple pricing structure at 37 cents per scan. I’ve seen coupons between 20-50% off and new customers automatically receive 10%.
- No shipping charges are incurred since they include prepaid shipping labels.
- There’s less need to sort ahead of time because you only pay for the scans you keep.
- They fix color issues and remove minor dust & scratches.
- They upload your picture online to their website and a DVD is sent to you in the mail.
- They offer 600 dpi resolution.
- There is approximately a 2 week lead time.
- They were accommodating and easy to work with over the phone.

- They offer a scanning service for a flat rate of $184 that includes prepaid shipping labels for a 11 X 9 X 6 box. This allows you to send approximately 1600-2500 pictures (depending on size) taking the price per scan down to as low as 8 cents.
- If you want to scan fewer pictures or spend less money, you will pay shipping and a much higher price per scan than with GoPhoto. I have seen coupons online for this company as well.
- You DO need to sort, because you will pay per scan and they ask that you group by size before sending.
- They don’t automatically fix color issues and remove minor dust & scratches.
- They don’t upload online, but a DVD is sent to you in the mail.
- They quoted approximately a 1 ½ – 2 week lead time.
