Cloudflare as a free alternative to DynDNS

After a decade or so of a great free service in 27 days my free account with DynDNS will expire. Their new pay service is being offered to those who managed to hang on to a free account for $20 per year. That’s not a lot, but $20 here, $30 there, etc.. it all adds up. That led me to look for an alternative service.

Turns out, I already had one! I am a pretty active user in CloudFlare. They have a great API that makes using them for dynamic dns really easy. Here’s what you need to do to use it on your Tomato router.

Log into your cloudflare account.
Grab your API key from the account page.
Create an A record for your desired hostname and set it to a temporary ip.
Go to your tomato router and find the DDNS settings.
Choose Custom URL
Enter: https://www.cloudflare.com/api.html?a=DIUP&ip=@IP&u=your_email@host.com&tkn=your_api_key&hosts=your.host.name
And you’re done!

evasi0n Jailbreak Problems with Windows

I just used the new evasi0n iOS6.1 Jailbreak for my iPhone 4S.

One odd problem right off the bat: It says, “You must run this app as Administrator”. Which is pretty normal occurrence thanks to UAC. So I right clicked it and said “Run as an Administrator”.. only it just repeated the error. Turns out, It doesn’t just mean a computer administrator it means your local admin account.

If you don’t have a local user account named “Administrator” you will have to create one, and run it using that username.

Once you have the proper user,

Just right click the file evasi0n.exe while holding shift, select “Run As Different User” and enter your adminstrator account’s username and password.

Then it works flawlessly!

This also works for the iphone 3, iphone 4, iphone 4S, iphone 5, ipad 2, ipad 3, and the ipad mini.

Entering a product key for Win 8 or Server 2012 is kind of tricky. Every Microsoft OS in the past has included a nice GUI for entering your key. The easiest way now is to use Power Shell.

Open powershell with admin privlidges
Enter the following: slmgr.vbs -ipk your-key-here
Now you’re activated.

Find an mp3, wav, midi, anything you like. Add it to your iTunes library.

Right click the file and choose “Create AAC Version”.

Right click the newly created file and choose “Show in Finder”.

Rename the file extension from “.m4a” to “.m4r”.

Drag and drop the newly renamed .m4r file into your ringtones folder inside your iTunes and sync your iPhone.

First you’ll need to enable the ability to use custom vibrations inside the accessibility settings. You enable it by going to Settings, General, Accessibility and turning Custom Vibrations on.

Then now you will have a new setting inside your contact editor. Edit a contact, choose vibration and then you can create a new vibration or choose from a list.
