We get sober by suppressing the “addict parts” of our mind, without realizing the roots of our behaviors and what those parts were trying to do for us. Here are the 5 ideas Chris mentioned to help reframe the season with your family.

1. DIY “Christmas Olympics”

Create a fun competition with holiday-themed events like a gingerbread house-building contest, snowman relay races, cookie decorating speed rounds, or a wrapping paper obstacle course. Award silly medals for “Best Decorator,” “Fastest Wrapper,” or “Snowball Toss Champion.”

2. “Reverse” Christmas Scavenger Hunt

Instead of finding things, hide small, meaningful notes or gifts (like handwritten memories or inside jokes) around the house. Each clue leads to the next, and everyone takes turns searching. End the hunt with hot chocolate and sharing favorite family memories.

3. Family Christmas Movie Reenactment

Pick a favorite holiday movie (like Home Alone or Elf) and have everyone act out funny scenes together. Use DIY props, costumes, and cameras to film it, then have a “premiere” night with popcorn. It’ll be a goofy family keepsake.

4. “Around the World” Christmas Dinner

Research how Christmas is celebrated in other countries and cook a dish or dessert from each. Set up “stations” in the kitchen or dining room, decorate accordingly, and let everyone learn something new while feasting together.

5. Holiday Camp-In by the Tree

Set up a cozy indoor camping experience next to the Christmas tree with blankets, pillows, and sleeping bags. Tell Christmas stories, play board games, make s’mores in the oven, and fall asleep under the glow of the lights.

 In this podcast, they discuss how to not be overwhelmed with such an important step. They discuss how to create an inventory as well as some practical steps to doing the step work.  It is a good idea to have a sponsor in place before beginning this step as guidance is needed.

We made a decision to turn our lives and our wills over to the care of God, as we understood God.

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:6-7)

Step 1 we talked about how “I can’t,” step 2 was “He can,” and now in step 3 we know “He will” if we let him.   Turning our will over to God is difficult because we have been given free will and our selfishness likes to hold on to control. However, there is freedom in letting go. We can see God at work when we give him absolute control over our dreams, actions, and wills.

Jorge and Doug discuss practical ways to work this step as well as how to make that decision to turn over our wills to God.

Discovery is that moment when it all comes out. It happens differently for everyone. Discovery for me was the moment when I had to come face to face with the impact of my deception. It was when I couldn’t manipulate my spouse or hide what I had been doing anymore. This episode is the story of my discovery and how I reached a crossroads on whether to stay in my addiction or move forward into recovery.
