ZOIL - Zoomable Object-Oriented Information Landscape

The ZOIL Software Framework for C#/WPF/Surface SDK: Distributed Zoomable User Interfaces for Natural Interaction in Multi-User, Multi-Display and Multi-Device Environments.

ZOIL (Zoomable Object-Oriented Information Landscape) is a software framework written in C# for the .NET 4.0/WPF platform. ZOIL's development is part of a research project lead by Hans-Christian Jetter at the Human-Computer Interaction Group of the University of Konstanz. It makes use of different external frameworks and APIs, e.g. Versant’s db4objects (db4o) object database and the Microsoft Surface SDK, to enable application programmers to easily provide a large zoomable visual workspace in their applications. This visual workspace in form of a zoomable information landscape has following properties that make ZOIL particularly interesting for natural and post-WIMP interaction in multi-user, multi-display and multi-device work environments for tangible and ubiquitous computing:

Semantic Zooming – For each object in the information landscape multiple size-dependent representations can be defined. While zooming in, an object can smoothly change its form, content, and nature.
Persistent – The information landscape has a data model that can be persisted and shared across devices using a client-server architecture based on Versant’s db4o.
Distributed and Real-Time Synchronized – The information landscape’s data model is synchronized in real-time across devices using a a client-server architecture based on Versant’s db4o. This enables multi-user and multi-device scenarios, in which multiple collocated or remote devices and users synchronously collaborate inside a single workspace.
MS Surface Support and Device Independent – At the current stage, ZOIL’s architecture offers support for typical mouse and multi-touch manipulations (Surface SDK) and input from OSC (Open Sound Control). While this part of ZOIL is still provisional, different applications of ZOIL also demonstrate support for tangible physical objects and digital pens.

The Worlds Biggest Photo Booth - Interactive installation at Nottingham Contem

The Worlds Biggest Photo Booth is an interactive installation created with Nottingham Contemporary Art Gallery. (nottinghamcontemporary.org)

The Photo Booth was housed in Nottingham Contemporarys’ “The Space” exhibition area to promote the exhibtion of photographic work by Diane Arbus - ARTIST ROOM On Tour with the Art Fund.

The booth features custom software created in Openframeworks that uses face detection (openCV) technology to detect the presence of users in front of a the physical physical booth. As users take a seat and strike their pose a custom Flash is fired by the software (connected via arduino) and a series of four photo’s are taken on a Canon 500D, these are download from the camera, and then compiled into a polaroid image in the style of Diane Arbus. These images are displayed and animated on a 30ft x 20ft projection as if they were falliing from the pocket of a real photo booth and are uploaded to Nottingham Contemporarys’ Flickr site for visitors to download as a memento of their experience.

The installation ran from 24th July 2010 – 6th September.

Medical Multitouch - Multitouch Volume Rendering Application

This multitouch-enabled volume rendering application was the major part of my bachelor's thesis. In addition, a 40" DSI multitouch table was built.
I won the audience award among 30 other great projects in 2010's "CV Tag" at the university of Koblenz.

RFID projection installation

I was lucky to work on this great project commissioned by the Cronos Group.
Since the event was canceled I wasn’t able to see it working like planned.

But I managed to build a demo setup at the Holocube office.
There was only one screen available for this demo.
But it’s built to scale. Tested with three laptops.

We didn’t have RFID cards for this demo so the messages are generated by the RFID software client.

Built with C++ and OpenGL using the wonderful OpenFrameworks , Inpinj RFID readers and some C# to create a RFID socket server.

Thanks to the people at Time2Trace for all the help with the RFID setup, the Humblet brothers for the 3D modelling, Holocube for the demo hardware.

This doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with him: if you give him a few Pink Thingies he will become pretty entertaining (even if in a bloody way :) )…

xTUIO PROJECT - the future is touchable...

The xTUIO project is a Multi Touch focused development and research initiative. Currently the website is spotting some Open Source and commercial software projects and also some informations about our Multi Touch hardware solutions like the FishTish series. xAPPS is a collection of TUIO enabled multi-touch apps that are built on MacOSX. uniTUIO is a collection of c# scripts developed for the Unity game engine. If you have not heard of this before, the basic idea behind uniTUIO is to have a nice set of scripts to allow you to easily implement TUIO based multi touch input into any Unity application. UniTUIO is free and opensource (GPL).

MultiTouch for Kids with ASD

MultiTouch for Kids with ASD - Technologies for Children with Autism Spectru

At the University of Iowa, we are conducting research to design and develop technologies for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Our goal is to better support communication, collaboration, creativity and self-expression through the technologies we develop. In this project, we are collaborating with our University's Center for Disabilities and Development, Hoover Elementary School in Iowa City and Four Oaks in Cedar Rapids.
Our research involves developing software for multi-touch displays that supports face-to-face activities and takes advantage of children's enthusiasm about using computers. We are also studying computer graphics and vision algorithms to modify the appearance of human faces in order to make it easier for children to process emotions. As we conduct our research activities, we are developing methods to conduct participatory design with children with ASD, their teachers, and special education staff.

This reserarch is funded in part by a grant from the Iowa Department of Education

chupakabra - PIC MCU LED/Photodiode DIY synth

LED/Photodiode-driven DIY synth based on PIC microcontroller.

Existing prototype is I'd say a version 0.0.2a and it has 4 photodiodes in the center, 4 LEDs blinking at 10kHz rate to allow filtering out the daylight... bad with fluorescent lamp though. It also has an LCD display which isn't used yet (except showing the word "chupakabra" on start)

It generates a weird "kind of a" sawtooth waveform (which sounds nothing like a musical instrument... which is why I called it "chupakabra" - I know that it goes "chupacabra", but who kares, right?) in when user's hand is inside the range of photodiodes and it reflects the light from LEDs changing it's pitch when moving left/right, volume - towards/away, "doubles" the sawtooth wave - forward/backward.

PIC program is written in MikroC which is bad. but it's my first PIC programming experience - I think to use some open-source compiler working on the next version of synth during this summer.

Squidy - Interaction Library

Squidy is an interaction library which eases the design of natural user interfaces (also known as "post-WIMP interfaces") by unifying various device drivers, frameworks and tracking toolkits in a common library and providing a central and easy-to-use visual design environment. Squidy offers diverse input modalities such as multi-touch input, pen interaction, speech recognition, laser pointer-, eye- and gesture-tracking. The visual user interface hides the complexity of the technical implementation from the user by providing a simple visual language based on high-level visual data flow programming combined with zoomable user interface concepts. Furthermore, Squidy offers a collection of ready-to-use devices, signal processing filters and interaction techniques. The trade-off between functionality and simplicity of the user interface is especially addressed by utilizing the concept of semantic zooming which enables dynamic access to more advanced functionality on demand. Thus, developers as well as interaction designers are able to adjust the complexity of the Squidy user interface to their current need and knowledge. The interaction library Squidy was developed in course of the research project inteHRDis - Interaction Techniques for High Resolution Displays at the Human-Computer Interaction Group, University of Konstanz.

openFrameworks - open source C++ toolkit for creative coding

Openframeworks is a c++ library designed to assist the creative process by providing a simple and intuitive framework for experimentation.

The library is designed to work as a general purpose glue, and wraps together several commonly used libraries under a tidy interface: openGL for graphics, rtAudio for audio input and output, freeType for fonts,freeImage for image input and output, quicktime for video playing and sequence grabbing.

The code is written to be both cross platform (PC, Mac, Linux, iPhone) and cross compiler. The API is designed to be minimal and easy to grasp. There are very few classes, and inside of those classes, there are very few functions. The code has been implemented so that within the classes there are minimal cross-referening, making it quite easy to rip out and reuse, if you need, or to extend.

Simply put, openFrameworks is a tool that makes it much easier to make things via code. We find it super useful, and we hope you do too.

OpenFrameworks is actively developed by Zach Lieberman, Theodore Watson, and Arturo Castro, with help from the OF community. ofxIphone, is actively developed by Mehmet Akten and Zach Gage, with development help from Lee Byron and Damian Stewart. The OF website is designed and maintained by Chris O’shea.

OpenFrameworks is indebted to two significant precursors: the Processing development environment, created by Casey Reas, Ben Fry and the Processing community; and the ACU Toolkit, a privately distributed C++ library developed by Ben Fry and others in the MIT Media Lab’s Aesthetics and Computation Group.
