5 Expert Tips to Build a Successful Makeup Artist Portfolio

1. The Power of High-Quality, Professional Photos

One of the most crucial elements of your makeup artist portfolio is the quality of the images. High-resolution, professionally shot photos speak volumes about your level of skill and professionalism. Avoid using selfies or poorly lit images. To make sure your photos stand out, collaborate with professional photographers, stylists, and models. Clean backgrounds and good lighting will keep the focus on your makeup artistry.

For example, Becky, one of our talented graduates, worked with a professional photographer for her final project. The high-quality photos of her special effects makeup were much better than her earlier shots, and those images helped her land incredible freelance gigs on ‘Wicked’, ‘Star Wars’, and ‘Indiana Jones & the Dial of Destiny’.

Remember, 10-20 of your best photos will have a much bigger impact than overwhelming potential clients with hundreds of images. Choose your best work carefully, and make it count.

2. Showcase Your Range of Skills and Makeup Styles

To stand out as a makeup artist, it’s essential to demonstrate versatility. A strong portfolio should showcase a variety of makeup styles, including bridal, editorial, fashion, and even special effects (SFX). The more adaptable you appear, the more likely you are to attract a diverse range of clients.

For example, Lucy Blundell Jones, one of our graduates, built a portfolio that showcased a range of makeup styles, from edgy fashion looks to intricate special effects makeup. This versatility helped her land roles in both the fashion industry and as a special effects artist for a TV show. Lucy, who worked as a Crowd Hair and Makeup Supervisor on Apple TV’s ‘Ted Lasso’, also recently taught fashion makeup at our Academy. In a video with students, she shared insights from her experience as a Crowd Supervisor and gave valuable tips for makeup trainees just starting out in the industry.

Consider including:

Fashion & Editorial Makeup: Use your portfolio to demonstrate your creative expertise, understanding of current trends, and ability to produce polished, camera-ready looks trusted for professional fashion and editorial work.

Special Effects (SFX): Display your skill in theatrical makeup or transforming a model into something extraordinary.

Creative Makeup: Include avant-garde or artistic makeup designs that show your flair.

Commercial/Beauty Makeup: Demonstrate your skill in creating polished, camera-ready looks for ads, magazine shoots, or beauty campaigns..

3. Before and After Photos to Showcase Your Skill

Before-and-after photos are one of the most powerful ways to show potential clients what you can do. These photos provide a clear visual representation of your skill, particularly when it comes to makeup transformations. Whether you’re working on bridal makeup, special effects, or just a simple beauty look, showing the transformation will help potential clients appreciate your artistry.

When uploading before-and-after photos, it’s essential to keep things consistent. Ensure both shots are taken under similar lighting conditions and angles so that the transformation is clear and impactful. For example, Emily, a recent graduate and theatre wig assistant, showcased her work on the ‘We Will Rock You’ musical tour by capturing before-and-after photos of her wig designs. These photos not only displayed her ability to transform the cast’s looks but also helped her demonstrate the precision and creativity needed for professional theatre work. The clarity of her transformations played a key role in Emily securing additional projects in the theatre industry, proving the power of well-presented portfolio images.

4. Keep Your Makeup Portfolio Organized and Easy to Navigate

A clean and organized portfolio is crucial. Visitors to your portfolio should easily navigate and find examples of the types of makeup you specialize in. Organize your portfolio by categories such as bridal, editorial, special effects, or creative makeup. You can even divide your portfolio into sections like “Makeup for Fashion” and “Makeup for Film & TV” if you work in different areas.

Emma, a graduate of our 4-Month Film & TV Makeup Course, organized her portfolio into categories like period makeup and special effects, making it easy for clients to navigate. You can view her full portfolio here. This helped her land key roles, including work on an upcoming Apple TV period drama and as a main team trainee on Guy Ritchie’s *‘The Fountain of Youth’, starring Natalie Portman and John Krasinski**. Her portfolio, combined with hands-on experience on high-profile projects, opened doors in the competitive film and TV makeup industry.

5. Add Client Testimonials to Build Trust

Nothing builds trust like real client testimonials. As you begin working with clients, ask them to provide feedback on their experience. Positive testimonials add credibility and will help you stand out from other makeup artists.

For instance, Helen, a graduate of CBMA Academy, began collecting testimonials after working as a Trainee Makeup Artist on productions through the ScreenSkills Trainee Finder Scheme. The positive feedback she received from directors and fellow crew members about her professionalism and skill was invaluable. These testimonials added significant weight to her portfolio, making her more attractive to potential clients.

How to Stand Out as a Makeup Artist

In addition to a standout portfolio, there are several other ways to ensure that you stand out in the makeup industry:

Stay Current: Makeup trends are constantly changing, so always keep up-to-date with the latest styles and techniques.

Networking: Attend industry events, collaborate with other professionals, and stay active in online makeup communities.

Specialize: Find a niche that sets you apart, whether it’s bridal makeup, special effects, or high-fashion looks.

In the world of special effects, prosthetics makeup is the technique that gives characters real depth and lifelike presence. It helps artists create believable injuries, age transformations, and imaginative creatures that appear natural on screen. By adding physical texture and precise detail, prosthetics deliver a level of realism that digital effects often cannot match. The importance of prosthetics makeup in special effects goes far beyond appearance, as it plays a crucial role in visual storytelling and brings creative concepts to life in a way digital methods alone cannot achieve.

In this article, we break down the significance of prosthetics makeup in special effects, how the process works, and the career paths available in this field. Whether you’re an aspiring SFX artist or simply fascinated by cinematic makeup, you’ll see why prosthetics remains a core element of movie and television production.

What Is Prosthetics Makeup in Film and TV?

Prosthetics makeup in film and television is the process of designing and applying artificial pieces to an actor’s face or body to create a planned on-screen transformation. These pieces range from small additions like scars or skin texture to full facial appliances used for creature work, aging effects, and major character redesigns. SFX prosthetics are crafted using materials such as silicone, foam latex, and gelatin to ensure a natural fit and realistic movement under high-definition cameras.

In modern film and TV production, SFX prosthetics play a crucial role in building believable characters, enhancing practical effects, and achieving realism that digital enhancements alone cannot provide.

Key Roles of Prosthetic Makeup in Special Effects

1. Character Creation and Transformation

One of the most fascinating aspects of prosthetics makeup is its ability to completely transform an actor’s appearance. This transformation can turn an actor into a creature from another world, a monster, or even a completely different person. Prosthetics makeup can alter the face, body, and hands to create fantastical beings like vampires, werewolves, Or other aliens.

For example, prosthetic makeup is responsible for the intricate, lifelike details in characters from popular films like Star Wars, Beetlejuice, or The Lord of the Rings. Without special effects prosthetics, these iconic characters would not have the same depth or authenticity.

2. Realism and Authenticity

In addition to fantastical transformations, prosthetic makeup is also used to create realistic effects that help make a scene more believable. The creation of realistic wounds, bruises, cuts, and other injuries can be essential for films involving action, horror, or war. Prosthetics makeup allows for injury effects that look real, without causing harm to the actors.

Using sfx silicone prosthetics for creating burns, scars, or post-fight injuries is a powerful tool in filmmaking. The tactile realism and attention to detail help filmmakers craft scenes that are emotionally gripping and visually compelling, heightening the drama and intensity of a scene.

3. Aging and De-aging

As storylines progress, characters often age, or at times, need to appear younger. This is where prosthetics makeup is key. Aging prosthetic makeup is often used to depict the physical effects of time, whether it’s wrinkles, sagging skin, or graying hair. For films that span many years, prosthetics makeup is used to seamlessly age actors and create a more realistic portrayal of the passage of time.

Similarly, de-aging prosthetics makeup is used in some productions to make actors appear younger. This technique has been notably used in films like The Irishman, where prosthetics were employed to make older actors appear decades younger.

4. Bringing Fantasy to Life

Genres like fantasy and science fiction heavily rely on prosthetic makeup to create imaginative and otherworldly creatures. Without the artistry behind special fx prosthetics, characters like aliens, monsters, or mythological creatures wouldn’t have the visual impact necessary to transport audiences into these otherworldly realms.

Prosthetic makeup also plays an important role in films based on historical or fantastical figures. The transformation of an actor into a different persona—be it a mythological god, an ancient king, or a terrifying creature—would be impossible without the use of fx prosthetics.

5. Enhancing Storytelling

Prosthetics makeup not only contributes to the look of a character but also enhances the narrative. The application of prosthetics pieces can dramatically alter the way a character is perceived. For example, a character who wears a prosthetic mask or face piece might appear menacing, mysterious, or tragic.

Prosthetics makeup also works hand-in-hand with costume design, setting the tone for the character’s role in the story. Whether it’s a hero, villain, or tragic figure, prosthetics makeup helps define the character’s identity and purpose in the plot.

The Prosthetics Makeup Process: From Concept to Application

The process of creating special effects prosthetics is intricate and involves several steps. It begins with a consultation between the director, makeup artist, and often a special effects supervisor to discuss the vision for the character. This may include designing sketches, creating a physical model of the prosthetics, and considering how they will fit into the film’s overall aesthetic.

1. Life Casting

The first step often involves life casting, where the actor’s face or body is molded to create an exact replica. This life cast serves as a foundation for sculpting and molding prosthetic pieces. Life casting allows the artist to ensure that the prosthetic will fit the actor perfectly, without restricting their ability to move or emote.

2. Sculpting and Molding

Once the life cast is complete, the prosthetics artist begins the sculpting process. Using materials like clay, the artist shapes the prosthetic piece according to the design. This is where the character’s features, textures, and details are brought to life. Once the sculpt is complete, a mold is made, and the prosthetics are cast in materials like foam latex, silicone, or gelatin to create the final piece.

3. Applying Prosthetics

The prosthetics pieces are then carefully applied to the actor’s face or body. This step requires precision and skill, as the artist must blend the edges of the prosthetic seamlessly into the actor’s skin. In many cases, airbrushing is used to match the prosthetic’s tone to the actor’s natural skin tone.

An understanding of human anatomy is crucial during this stage to ensure that the prosthetic doesn’t hinder the actor’s facial expressions or movements. A prosthetic that restricts movement can make a character appear stiff and unnatural, breaking the immersion for the audience.

4. Finishing Touches

After the prosthetic is applied, artists use additional techniques to bring the piece to life. This might include painting, texturing, and adding realistic details such as veins, hair, and fine wrinkles. The goal is to make the prosthetic as lifelike as possible to ensure it enhances the character’s realism.

Creating stunning special effects makeup for film and television requires more than just creativity—it demands the right set of professional tools, knowledge of industry techniques, and a deep understanding of materials that bring imagination to life. Whether you’re crafting hyper-realistic injuries, transforming performers into supernatural beings, or developing fantastical creatures for the screen, every SFX artist must be equipped with a versatile and reliable toolkit. In this guide, we break down the 7 must-have tools for special effects makeup, along with essential materials to help you achieve production-ready results.

At Christine Blundell Makeup Academy in London, we’ve created this guide for those pursuing a career—or nurturing an interest—in the SFX makeup industry, drawing from our award-winning experience in film, theatre, and TV training.
Before building a professional toolkit, it’s important to understand the foundations of special effects makeup in film and how these techniques are used across cinema and television productions.

1. Life Casting Kits: A Foundation for Realistic SFX Makeup

Life casting is the cornerstone of many SFX makeup projects. A life casting kit allows you to create detailed molds of body parts, including faces, hands, and other limbs. Using materials like alginate or silicone, you can replicate even the smallest details, ensuring your prosthetics or injuries fit precisely. These molds are essential for creating realistic prosthetics, as they provide a true-to-life base for your designs.

2. Prosthetics Sculpting Tools: Shape Your Imagination

Once you have your life cast, it’s time to sculpt your prosthetics, wounds, or fantasy features. Prosthetics sculpting tools allow you to bring these designs to life. Some of the most important tools include:

Clay Shapers: For smoothing and adding fine details to your sculpture.

Rakes: Ideal for creating skin textures or muscle tones.

Loop Tools: Perfect for detailed carving or adding intricate features.

These sculpting tools enable you to turn your vision into reality, whether you’re working with clay, silicone, or latex. Proper sculpting is the key to creating believable and detailed prosthetics.

3. Moulding Materials: Recreate Your Sculptures

After sculpting your design, you need the right materials to create molds for your prosthetics. Moulding materials are essential for accurately replicating your sculpted pieces. Some common materials include:

Silicone Rubber: Flexible and perfect for prosthetics that need to move with the skin.

Plaster Bandages: Ideal for creating hard molds.

Fiberglass: Used for more durable, larger prosthetics.

These materials allow you to create a precise mold that can be used to cast your prosthetic piece in the material of your choice.

4. Silicone and Foam Latex: Essential Materials for Prosthetics

The materials you use to create prosthetics define their look and feel. Silicone and foam latex are the go-to choices for many SFX artists:

Silicone: Known for its flexibility and ability to mimic skin texture. It’s ideal for realistic prosthetic burns, wounds, and scars.

Foam Latex: Lightweight and perfect for large prosthetics like creature suits or masks.

Learning how to work with these materials is essential for creating realistic prosthetics that will hold up on screen.

5. Body Paints and Pigments: Adding Color and Realism

Body paints and pigments are essential for bringing your prosthetics to life. Whether you’re creating bruises, blood, or fantasy designs, the right pigments help add depth and realism to your effects. Brands like Kryolan, Mehron, and Ben Nye offer high-quality paints that provide vibrant color, long-lasting wear, and skin safety. Using these pigments allows you to seamlessly blend prosthetics with natural skin tones or create dramatic fantasy effects.

6. Makeup Sponges and Brushes: Precision and Blending

To blend and apply special effects makeup, precision tools like sponges and brushes are indispensable. Here’s how these tools help:

Sponges: Different textures and densities allow you to create stippled effects, blend prosthetics, and add texture to your makeup.

Detail Brushes: Perfect for fine details like blood effects, scars, or veins.

Blending Brushes: These help soften harsh lines between prosthetics and the skin.

The right brushes and sponges ensure that your special effects makeup looks seamless, natural, and professional.

7. Special Effects Adhesives: Sticking to Perfection

Applying prosthetics securely and safely requires strong special effects adhesives. Pros-aide, spirit gum, and other adhesives are essential for keeping prosthetics in place during long shoots. These adhesives should be strong enough to hold prosthetics in place but also gentle on the skin for comfort. Learning to properly apply and remove these adhesives is crucial for both safety and the longevity of your makeup.

For many years, makeup artists have been essential to the entertainment industry, turning actors into anything from heroes to monsters in movies, television shows, and plays. SFX makeup and prosthetic makeup are the two main methods used to accomplish these wonderful changes. Although both disciplines use special effects to produce realistic looks, it’s important to recognize the difference between SFX makeup and prosthetic makeup since they use different materials, use different methods, and produce different results. In today’s entertainment industry, mastering the art of creating realistic wounds, fantastical creatures, and dramatic character transformations is essential.

To help you better understand these differences, we spoke with Oscar and BAFTA-winning makeup designer Christine Blundell from CBMA Academy and Kristyan Mallett, a renowned SFX and prosthetics makeup artist and SFX tutor at CBMA Academy. Kristyan has worked on major films such as Mission Impossible, Aquaman, Scoop, Sandman, The Dark Knight, and Wonder Woman. Both have extensive knowledge of the techniques and materials involved in special effects and prosthetic makeup, which is beneficial to aspiring makeup artists.

Since the notorious “chopping off” of Mary Queen of Scots’ head in 1895, much has changed in the application of SFX makeup. Prosthetic makeup techniques have developed so much over the years that it is now impossible to tell what is genuine and what is produced with special effects. This article addresses the primary difference between prosthetic makeup and SFX makeup as well as how these methods are transforming the sector right now.

What is SFX Makeup?

SFX Makeup or Special Effects Makeup uses various materials to directly apply realistic or fantastical effects onto the skin, such as wounds, scars, bruises, and burns, commonly seen in films, TV shows, and theater productions. Artists use techniques like latex, silicone, and paint to transform the skin, creating lifelike alterations for dramatic impact.

Common Uses:

Simulating cuts, bruises, and burns for medical or horror dramas.

Using prosthetics and cosmetics, realistic aging effects are produced.

Fantasy Effects: Creating aliens, monsters, or creatures for action and fantasy genres.

Materials Used in SFX Makeup

Latex: A easy and flexible choice for producing fast, transient effects like wounds and scars is latex.

Gelatin: Known for its moldable and skin-like texture, ideal for creating injuries and wounds, gelatin.

Silicone prosthetics: For bigger prosthetic uses, silicone prostheses provide great realism and flexibility.

Foam latex: Perfect for making lightweight, flexible prosthetics for masks, limbs, and creature features, foam latex.

What is prosthetic makeup?

Prosthetic makeup is the art of creating custom-made, large-scale elements such as masks, body parts, or full-body suits to drastically alter an actor’s appearance. It is used for transforming characters into creatures, elderly people, or other dramatic forms that require significant physical changes, enhancing the realism of the character on screen.

Techniques Used:

Lifecasting: Shaping an actor’s body to produce prosthetic pieces.

Sculpting: Using foam or silicone to create realistic prosthetic items.

Application: The actor applies prosthetic components to their skin for flawless integration.

Materials Used in Prosthetics Makeup

Silicone: A premium material for prosthetics, silicone provides durability, comfort, and flexibility.

Gelatin and latex: Used for smaller, temporary prosthetics needing fast application, latex and gelatin.

Foam rubber: Foam rubber is lightweight and commonly used to create larger prosthetic pieces, like costumes and masks. It’s known for its versatility and ease of use.

Plasticine: Often used in sculpting molds for prosthetics.

Key Difference Between SFX Makeup and Prosthetic Makeup

SFX Makeup and prosthetic makeup both create realistic transformations, but they serve different purposes. SFX makeup is used for quick, temporary effects like wounds, scars, and fantasy changes, making it ideal for short scenes in film and TV. In contrast, prosthetic makeup involves more complex, long-lasting transformations, such as full-body suits, creature designs, and aging effects, requiring detailed techniques for dramatic character changes. These key differences set them apart.

1. Materials and Techniques

Latex, gelatin, and foam latex are common materials used in SFX makeup because they are flexible, moldable, and perfect for rapid changes. Creating realistic wounds or simulating skin injury that seems plausible in a matter of seconds or minutes is the main objective of special effects makeup.

Alternatively, prosthetic makeup calls for stronger, longer-lasting materials that may be molded into complex shapes, such as foam rubber or silicone prosthetic limbs. These prosthetics may change a person into a whole other being, such as a beast, alien, or fantasy character, although they are typically heavier and more difficult to use.

2. Application Process

Materials such as realistic wound makeup and special effects prosthetics are frequently molded directly onto the skin, while special effects makeup is usually applied directly to it with brushes or sponges. Depending on the effect’s intricacy, the application procedure is usually finished in an hour or less.

Applying designed prosthetic components is part of prosthetics, which might call for a more involved procedure. These components, typically crafted in a separate studio, undergo molding and sculpting before adhesives like Pros-Aide secure them to the actor’s skin. Hair punching may be necessary for prosthetics to produce realistic hair, particularly for character makeup or facial prosthetic applications.

Special FX makeup is generally designed for short-term use, with quick application and removal. Because of the materials used, SFX makeup may not be as comfortable to wear for long periods and can sometimes be more challenging to manage for prolonged scenes or physical activity.

Prosthetic effects makeup, especially when using materials like silicone prosthetics, is designed for more extended wear. These prosthetics are designed to be lightweight, flexible, and breathable, ensuring enhanced comfort for extended shoots or performances. Prosthetics also have better durability, with the ability to withstand extended filming schedules.

SFX Makeup: Objective and Use Temporary effects for scenarios involving injuries, gore, or environmental devastation are the primary uses for special effects makeup. Scenes needing quick changes and effects, such as wounds, bruises, and casualty effects, are ideal for it.

Prosthetic Makeup: For more dramatic changes that need a substantial change to the actor’s look, prosthetic makeup is used. The creation of monsters, fantastical creatures, and aging makeup is included in this category. Prosthetics are often made to provide more mobility and aesthetic flexibility.

How to Apply SFX Makeup

Applying special FX makeup requires precision and creativity. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to achieve realistic wounds, cuts, and bruises:

Prepare the Skin: Start by cleaning and priming the skin to ensure the makeup adheres well.

Apply the Base Layer: Use a base color like foundation or concealer that matches the actor’s skin tone.

Create the Wound: Using materials like latex or gelatin, sculpt the shape of the wound. Layer it to give depth and texture.

Add Color and Detail: Add colors like red, yellow, and purple for bruising, and use black or dark red for fresh blood effects.

Blend and Set: Blend the edges of the wound into the skin using a sponge and set with a powder to ensure the makeup stays in place.

How to Apply Prosthetics Makeup

The process for applying prosthetic effects involves the following steps:

Prepare the Skin: Clean and shave the area where the prosthetic will be applied to ensure a smooth surface.

Apply Adhesive: Using a prosthetic adhesive, apply a thin layer on the skin where the prosthetic piece will go.

Attach the Prosthetic: Carefully place the prosthetic piece onto the adhesive and hold it in place for a few seconds.

Blend Edges: Once the prosthetic is secure, blend the edges using latex or silicone to make it appear seamless.

Add Final Touches: Apply makeup to enhance coloring and details, including techniques like hair punching to create realistic skin textures or scars.

Visiting the makeup school on a normal working day is crucial. Meet the tutors, staff, and students to get a real feel for the place.

Make sure you have prepared some questions for them in advance and ask the same questions at each makeup school. Do not be shy in quizzing them about anything you’d like to know ! Request a tour of the makeup school, including its studios and training equipment. Also, ask to see work from past students, tutors, or the principal.

Sometimes you will know if the place is the right one for you in the first 10 seconds of arriving there!

Our Academy often employs our recent graduates as teaching assistants, so you can chat to them and quiz them about their experiences of studying at the Makeup school and attending our makeup course.

3. Read Graduate testimonials and Google Reviews

Check the Professional Reputation of Your Chosen Makeup School & Their Hair, Makeup or SFX Courses by reading graduate testimonials and Google reviews in detail for each school. As an example, you can see our Academy’s graduate Google reviews on this link.

You can also ask people on various Hair and Makeup artist Facebook groups and forums about it. Word of mouth is also important, if you know any Makeup artists who you can ask, which makeup school they attended and why?

4. Who are the Tutors who teach at the Makeup school?

One of the most important things to check before you join a makeup course is who are the tutors? Are they still working in the industry and are well-regarded still?

You can check their Imdb profiles and check which films or TV series they have worked on. An added bonus is if they are award – winners or nominees , for example, Oscar or BAFTA or MUA Awards in the film and TV hair and makeup industry. Their awards are listed on their Imdb pages, too.

As an example, our Principal , Christine Blundell, is both an Oscar & BAFTA winning Hair and makeup designer and you can see her Imdb profile on this link. Equally , many of our Tutors are award nominees and winners and you can see more information about them on this web page.

All our tutors are leading UK hair and makeup or SFX designers and artists and they are all our students’ potential employers! So many of them have taken on our students as trainee Makeup artists on films and TV series they have designed.

Next Open Day Sat 5th April

5. Have a Look at the Makeup Course Syllabus & Timings: You want a practical / hands-on course!

There are part time makeup courses and very short and very long ones, too.

We believe in the Goldilocks Theory…..Not too hot, not too cold but just right!

To experience and learn all the necessary skills , our flagship 4 Month Film & TV Hair & Makeup Course. Is Perfect!

Make sure that the makeup course syllabus covers everything a Trainee makeup artist in film & TV needs to know, from basic makeup techniques to period makeup & period wig and hair styling, casualty makeup and prosthetics, textured hair styling, barbering and facial hair skills, to script breakdown and continuity.

6. Graduates’ Destinations

It is fairly easy to check up on graduates who have studied at the makeup schools to see where they have ended up after graduating. Are they working in Film or TV or Theatre?

As an example, our Makeup school is the only school in the UK that offers Guaranteed Paid Onset Work Experience to our 4 Month Film & TV hair, makeup & SFX course graduates and we also offer limitless Aftercare, so you can come back to us and ask us for help at any stage of your Makeup artist career.

7. Look at Makeup School & Course Industry Links

The Makeup School’s reputation and its links to the UK film & TV industry professionals is paramount to making your decision about studying there. As an example, our Principal is member of BAFTA and has excellent knowledge of the industry and many hair and makeup designers and supervisors working in it. All our tutors are leading UK hair and makeup or SFX designers and artists and they are all our students’ potential employers! So many of them have taken on our students as trainee Makeup artists on films and TV series they have designed.

8. Check if There is Any Funding Available For Your Chosen Makeup Course

Some Makeup schools offer different funding options to prospective students who want to join their makeup courses, so it pays off to do your research. Hair , makeup & SFX courses at our Academy qualify for a range of training bursaries, from ScreenSkills to BAFTA scholarship and you can find all of them listed on our Funding page. Depending on your experience level, you may be eligible for up to £3,000 of ScreenSkills bursary or even up to £12,000 if your BAFTA scholarship application is successful.

Ready to kickstart your makeup journey?
Explore our professional makeup courses in London with hands-on training, expert tutors, and career support.

9. Makeup School Location & Student Accommodation

Make sure that your chosen Makeup school is easily accessible either by public transport and that it is in a safe area. Our Academy is only 3 min walking distance from a tube station and 10 min walk from a London overground station. We are also able to offer help with finding accommodation to international students and also UK students who are not London based.

10. What happens after the course?

This last question is as important as the first!

You have visited the makeup school, and you like what you see so far, all boxes have been ticked but if they simply wave you goodbye after your makeup course – is that good enough? Is that acceptable? NO!

You do not need an “Agency” or any other gimmick, what you want is a makeup school that will help you for years to come. For as long as it takes for you to succeed.

A warm family atmosphere and a supportive environment where no help is too much, nothing is an issue…….

Our Principal’s and Oscar & BAFTA winning Hair & Makeup Designer’s, Christine Blundell’s latest film ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ was released in UK cinemas on the 6th of September this year and it continues to beat box office records in its first month.

The sequel of Tim Burton’s 1988 classic was eagerly awaited by fans all over the world , as it has been over 30 years in the making.

This sequel is set more or less in the present day – although time in Burton’s world is elastic – with the now adult Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) rocking exactly the same haunted Victorian doll wardrobe and Bauhaus-groupie haircut as her teenage self in the first film. Lydia has achieved a degree of celebrity as a TV personality: she’s a “psychic mediator” and the host of a real-life hauntings show titled Ghost House. But she’s a shadow of her spiky former self.

A family tragedy brings everyone back to the house where it all started, offering an opportunity for the persistent Beetlejuice to inveigle his way out of the underworld and finally claim Lydia as his reluctant spouse. There’s a spurious subplot involving Monica Bellucci as Beetlejuice’s spurned (and dissected) ex-wife, who has pulled herself back together (literally) and has set her sights on reclaiming her man. And a fun new addition to the cast is Willem Dafoe, playing a deceased actor who in turn is playing a hard-boiled cop tasked with investigating rule violations in the world of the dead; the gleeful silliness of scenes such as these are where the film feels most alive.

A great number of our Academy tutors and graduates worked with Christine on this film and enjoyed it immensely. You can read about some of the ‘Behind the Scenes’ moments Christine talked about in her recent interviews, for US Weekly, Los Angeles Times and Allure magazines.

Here is a short summary of what Christine said in her interviews – feel free to click on above links for original magazines’ articles, to read the full versions of the interviews.

“My job really was to prep everything so I had every version of what we could do with Lydia’s character further down the line and once Winona started, we played about a few different looks and kind of worked out that we had to give a nod to that fringe. I think I’d have been literally blasted by the fans if she didn’t still have an essence of grown-up goth about her. So we definitely decided to sort of stay in that area.”

For me, it was important for my department to be “respectful” to the original 1988 cult classic while also finding their “own” style more than 30 years later. Each decision was a “collaboration” between myself, the actors and director Tim Burton, who was “very specific” about what he envisioned for the characters.

That included Michael Keaton’s titular character, a ghost who had to look ageless, despite the decades between movies. And although Beetlejuice’s overall appearance stayed fairly similar to the original, my team and I still went through “weeks” of trying “different samples of how [his look] should be.”

Here is one BTS episode of how the make up team resolved the problem of the actor’s tongue still showing an un-ghostly shade of pink.

Christine Blundell and her hair and makeup team quickly got a blue food dye concoction for the actor to gargle and spit out so his tongue would go dark. It’s an example of the type of practical effects Burton leaned on for the 36-year sequel to his cult classic “Beetlejuice” — itself known for doing real illusions in front of the camera.

Our Principal worked on 2 more films since working on ‘Beetlejuice’ sequel and she took many of our graduates as her trainee makeup artists and also more recent graduates who did their work experience on those films.

She averages 2 or 3 films a year still, while actively supervising the teaching at the Academy and sometimes teaching here herself, usually during our final 4 Month Film & TV Hair , Makeup & SFX course week, that we call Bootcamp week, in which our students have their exams, pulling together all the skills they learnt while doing the course. Click here to find out more about the course and its syllabus.

Q-1 What was your pathway into the film industry?

I wouldn’t say my pathway was an ideal pathway into the industry, I spent a lot of money and time doing a not so great degree in Special Effects, this was after I went to art college. Me, like many others put a lot of trust in the course and it was taught by fine art teachers and engineers, not much industry experience at all. After the first year I worked out that if I was going to make the most of the course I would have to supplement the course with a lot self-learning and using the free materials, studio space and technicians knowledge. Once the course was over I felt I wasn’t good enough to even show any potential employer anything I’d done. So I moved back in with my parents, worked any paid jobs I could find, all while I made portfolio projects, worked on low budget films or for free on student projects. I did anything that could build skills and go towards my portfolio. Through networking I eventually worked for a prosthetics artist on my first feature film and from there met more people and continued to work more and more till I ended up getting recommended to work in an amazing prosthetics company. I made myself as useful as I could in this company and learnt so much in each of the departments. During my time at this company I continued my development as an artist which is always on-going and never stops.

Q-2 What would you recommend to anyone who is seeking a career in the industry ?

This career is one that you don’t really need a qualification to do but choosing a good course that is taught by an industry professional will help a lot. There are long courses and degrees, however I would tell people to check out what previous students work is like, who is teaching the course and how many previous students made it into the industry. I am biased about the course I teach on but it was developed by a prosthetics workshop owner and people working in the industry teach on it. If you’re serious about getting started, consider enrolling in a Professional SFX Makeup Course developed by working artists. I would also say that if you choose a course try and find out about the processes and materials, also have a try yourself at some application. The more you come to a course with the more you will get out of it. You do also have to remember that any course is a beginning, your continued effort and development is important.

Q-3 Was there a film that inspired you to begin this journey and what was it about the film?

As a 3 year old I was told I was obsessed with Jason and the Argonauts and this love of Ray Harryhausen’s stop motion animation films carried on throughout my childhood and definitely inspired me, seeing these monsters come alive on screen was very magical. As an early teen my love went to horror. Films like ‘Dawn and Day of the dead’, ‘American werewolf in London’ and ‘The Thing’ pushed my love for horror into special effects.

Q-4 What is your favourite part of the process of prosthetics?

I do love the gory parts of the job. I love making blood effects, especially when you are involved from the start. Working out the effect and building it. It’s also a lot of fun seeing the reactions in people who witness a good gory effect.

Q-5 What advice would you give to your younger self regarding your career?

Don’t doubt yourself and work as hard as you party.

Q-6 Name 3 items of kit that are key and you always have?

Kits are quite large and it’s hard to name three things I would say are key outside of the obvious like brushes, glue and paints but three items I use often would be my Leatherman (for blood effects), duel fibre stipple brush (painting) and my photo reference library on my tablet for all the inspiration.

Q-7 Best piece of advice you were ever given?

Treat this job as a hobby you sometimes get paid for. I’ve always taken away from that piece of advice that I should have the drive to do this even if no one is paying me. That need or desire should drive you to always create. It shouldn’t solely be for financial gain or even worse some instant gratification from social media. Being creative is something that drives you and defines you. This drive and ambition will be noticed by others.

Q-8 Is there a show/movie that you would have loved to have worked on?

One of my big dreams will always be to work on a Japanese Godzilla film, one with a rubber monster suit. I even took up learning Japanese too for a while. Can always dream, right ?

Q-9 If you were having a dinner party who would be some of your guests?

Danny DeVito, Taylor Tomlinson, Tom Segura and Scarlett Johansson

Q-10 What advice do you give students when you are teaching them?

I always tell them to not sit on the new skills they’re learning. They should be focused on what they enjoyed on the course and continue to gain skills and develop in any way they can. Remember each week, month or year you don’t do anything to reach your goals, 100s of others are doing something to reach their goals.
