You just got that first date with the girl you’ve been eyeing for weeks now, and this means she finds you reasonably attractive, witty, and is willing to give you at least one chance to prove your mettle. She has seen you in your office uniform, workplace, school, etc. setting for a while now, and psychological studies have proven that first impressions are lasting when it comes to pairing, so you’ve got just once chance at impressing her with your casual true self outside of the usual setting. Granted that a positive attitude and self-confidence can’t be replaced with a dapper outfit, it does go a long way however! So let’s work on your image so that you can cross that important threshold and achieve the second date.

Opinions are entirely varied when it comes to a woman’s screening criteria for a man during a first date, however one thing is for certain. KISS—keep it simple stupid. The first date is not the time to bust out all of your peacock feathers and plumage, no woman wants to be outshone by another, especially not by her new date! The first date is a chance to get to meet someone in a relaxed, and casual environment, not an opportunity to show her how you look with a bow tie, or a three piece suit! Don’t forget that piece of advice mates, because if you go overboard on the style department you may commit a fashion faux pas in her books, and axe your chances of a second get together.

Simplicity is all about avoiding extremes, so don’t spring for your tight crotch enlarging pants, or that extra baggy pair of cargos...you want to straddle the middle as best as possible—spring for your fitted trousers instead. If you have a rather flamboyant style, try to be a little more conservative on the first date. Don’t show all of your style cards on the first meeting, you will just be an open book, intrigue and mystery, breed interest and peak desire.

To further carry on the topic of intrigue, don’t wear an excessively tight fitting top, and this applies to hard bodies, and especially the gents with a more flabby upper body. You want to keep her guessing, and let her imagination run a little wild and wonder what you are packing under there. Fitted tops are okay if you have Adonis’ pecs, but just don’t go overboard, capish? Another thing that many people forget is don’t wear any t-shirts with huge beer, sports team, rock band, etc. logos on the front...a big turn off for many women who may not be as big of a fan of the featured item as you are—you’re not a walking billboard. If you are a t-shirt aficionado, it’s okay to wear solid colours, and layer with other items to capture your true personality! It’s okay if a small label such as Lacoste, or Hugo Boss is showing, just nothing dramatic that is emblazoned across your chest.

Your choice of footwear, and your watch are the two biggest draws on that first date when it comes to attire. You can be sure that your lady friend is going to check them out, so remember to keep it simple, and elegant. Clean those two items before the date, just to make sure that it’s perfect! And on a final note we’d like to remind you not to wear excess jewellery, keep the bling slightly muted on that day, because at the end of the day we want her to judge you by your personality, and not what you are wearing. We all need to do laundry, but some of us get our moms to do it...shame shame!!! But do you really understand all of the settings on your machine? Probably not, we’re here to help with a short guide to your washing machine and dryer.

WASHING MACHINE

Normal/Regular

This is the setting that you want to use if laundering your whites because the combination of hot water and strong speeds of the rotator will get your whites their whitest and kill the germs in the process! Basic undergarments such as underwear, t-shirts, gym socks, etc. are suited to this setting. Avoid washing your other clothes in this setting because the scalding hot water may cause fading of colours...we warned you!

Permanent Press

Coloured garments such as your dress socks, khakis, dress shirts (non dry clean type), polo shirts, etc. will be washed in this setting. This cycle is gentler than the one just discussed because the rotator will cycle at a slower speed. Interestingly the machine will first use warm water, and then rinse with cool water in an effort to reduce colour fade.

Delicates

This cycle should be common sense, if your garment appears to be delicate or very light weight it should be washed in this cycle. Make sure to check the labels though, because it might read dry clean only.

Hand Wash

No your machine doesn’t have this setting marked on it, however, certain pieces such as wool sweaters, silk handkerchiefs or those kinky silk boxers that you have secretly stashed away need to be washed by hand only. Wash them in a sink with lukewarm water and a small amount of very mild scent free detergent. Rinse thoroughly and then lay it out flat to dry...DO NOT wring or hang to dry as this can cause some serious shrinkage.

DRYERS

Regular/Heavy

For your most durable clothing that are made of heavyweight fabrics use this setting as it will apply the greatest amount of heat to minimize drying time. This setting will make your dryer extremely hot so take care not to put in any fragile articles of clothing into the inferno as they may shrink or colour fade.

Permanent Press

Just like with the washing machine, this setting is for coloured garments because the medium heat setting is designed to preserve the natural colour of the clothing. One helpful tip is to remove wrinkle resistant shirts and trousers before they are entirely dry, and hang them up to dry completely...this will make it less likely for you to have to iron the garments.

Delicates

Similar to the washing machine counterpart, this setting is for delicate garments which are not very tolerant of heat, but take care not to keep your knitwear in the dryer for too long or you will observe some serious shrinkage.

Air Fluff

Not a setting on all dryers, but this helps to soften and loosen out some fabrics that may become stiff after drying. When put to this setting the dryer will just oscillate the spinner at room temperature and rely on circulation to soften the clothes.

So you’ve decided to upgrade your Timex Ironman that you had since grade ten, but aren’t sure how to select a watch that is more grown up. This article is going to teach you everything you need to know in order to get that perfect timepiece.

The first step in purchasing a decent watch is to acquaint yourself with some of the terminology that is used in the business.

Complication

This term refers to anything that your watch is capable of doing above and beyond the simple task of time keeping. Examples are a chronograph feature, stopwatch, calendar, laser beam (yes those do exist).

Movement

The little tiny gears and cogs that make your watch tick. Swiss movements are the best, followed by Japanese in second place.

Pretty self explanatory, but please do not confuse this to mean that your watch is “water proof” so it is advisable to remove your watch when taking a shower or swimming, unless your watch is rated 5Bar or water resistant to one hundred meters.

Collectible watches are those that were made between 1935 and 1985, anything older than that is a vintage. A few years back a vintage watch sold for $11 million dollars. If you are one of the fortunate few who are able to get their hands on a true vintage watch make sure to ask for original documentation to back up the dealer’s claims about the authenticity of the timepiece. This paperwork will have a serial number that has to match with what is imprinted on the body of the watch. It doesn’t matter if you are purchasing a $100 watch by Fossil, or a $65000 masterpiece by Patek Philippe your watch is a valuable instrument and that is why it is important to make this investment at a reputable seller that can provide certificates of authenticity. Spending money on a counterfeit can prove to be a costly affair if the knock off is unable to accurately track time. And a true watch connoisseur will easily be able to expose your fake.

The strap on the watch can be made of various materials such as rubber, leather, or metal. The order of value for the metal from highest to lowest is as follows:

Platinum

White gold

Pink gold

Yellow gold

Steel (however this is more valuable than platinum if the watch was made during the steel shortages of World War Two).

Metal straps are considered bold, and leather more elegant. A gentleman invited to a tuxedo mandatory party will always wear a watch with a black leather strap. A watch with a metal strap pairs well with jeans, however, if it is a sleek and strong design it can go well with a suit for the office. In terms of value a watch that is fully mechanical is of more value than one that has a quartz movement, and that is why these watches also command a higher price. You may also choose to opt for a watch that has a chronograph function (stop watch and distance measuring features), and these watches are typically large and will get much attention from people because of its muscular stance on the wearer’s wrist. However if you purchase a fine time piece it is imperative to maintain your complex piece of machinery by having it oiled and cleaned every three to five years because the internal oils will have started to break down by this time. Find a reputable watch repair centre to perform this type of work, and usually you can find qualified professionals that are trained to work on your particular model if you carefully read the service manual that came with your watch. Depending on the quality of your watch the average repair can cost anywhere from $400 to half a million dollars. If you own a Swiss watch it can take up to a period of four months to overhaul your watch and re-lubricate the internal components because the entire watch is carefully taken apart, and then lovingly put back together.

So what exactly is the difference between a $100 and a $30000 watch? Well as a rule of thumb any watch that is above $2500 is entirely hand-made and is not mass produced. Each year the company will produce say 500 units of that particular model for the entire world. It is like owning a little piece of coveted art on your wrist. A cheap “Made in China” watch will keep track of the time no doubt, however, a genuine Swiss watch is skilfully crafted by the hands of a man in a tiny workshop in Geneva, and his family would have been making watches for generations. This man’s bloodline has been lovingly making watches for Kings, Queens and heads of State for centuries. You are buying into a piece of history, a piece of tradition, and that is why you are paying the premium. Just to give you an idea of the value of Swiss watches, "Chopard" a company based in Switzerland recently released the world's most valuable watch, costing a cool $25 million dollars.

U-Boat Watches, Genuine Military Equipment

The year is 1942, the world is consumed by war as the Nazis ravage much of Europe, devastating and destroying anyone that stood in their way. It is from this war torn era that a dream was born. A workshop out of fascist Italy called Fontana started to pen the designs of a unique new timepiece, a luxury watch so spectacular that it could only be honoured to Italy’s elite Naval officers, the men who were to bring glory to Italy. The men who commanded submarines (known as U-Boat) in the rough seas deserved an accurate and reliable timepiece so special, that it would inspire the rest of the crew to work hard and get promoted—a way to build morale and support for one another in these times of struggle. Fontana sketched up the designs for U-Boat, a line of luxury watches that would hold the same esteem, if not more honour than being awarded a medal for bravery in the Italian navy. And this is how the dream of U-Boat watches was born.

Unfortunately for Fontana the war soon came to a close and the project was scrapped, but the carefully drawn up designs, colour samples, and original prototype materials were locked away for six decades. For sixty years the design plans for these marvellous timepieces were stashed secretly in a vault, hidden from the world. In the year 2000 Italo Fontana, a cousin of the workshop’s original founder uncovered the documents and samples that were cloaked by a veil of secrecy for so long, and decided that the world was now ready to enjoy these treasures.

Spring Styling, How To Transition From Winter To Summer

Spring is just around the corner, and this means that fashion conscious people will have to gradually start the transition from winter to summer attire. For most people it is easy to differentiate between winter and summer clothing, but challenges arise when trying to dress fashionably for the transition from cold to warmer weather, and that is why we are going to work with you by outlining a few key pointers that will help you preserve your composure and fashion sense in the upcoming weeks.

Winter Armour

As the daylight hours increase and we push our clocks forward, you can slowly start to bring out the pastel colours which you so lovingly packed away in your closet.

It’s time to store your heavy duty scarves and let them hibernate in favour of those fashionable scarves that are constructed of lighter materials. Pack away your hats and winter gloves, and bring out your leather driving gloves and stylish sunglasses.

One of the most important skills is to learn how to layer with confidence because this is what will differentiate the stylish from the unstylish person! Dress with many light layers that can be gradually removed during the day as the cool morning temperatures gradually eases into a more tolerable range. The Bad Boy Of Fashion, Leather Jackets

The single most iconic piece of clothing that a man can ever own is undoubtedly the leather jacket. So versatile is this piece of garment that it is adaptable for use by everyone from hardened street gangs to the street hardened police officer. This unique property of leather jackets is because leather truly is a second skin with its breathable, and pliable properties. It can be cut and fashioned in every imaginable style to perfectly hug the contours of your body and give you a truly alpha male persona. This rugged garment which is often the single most expensive clothing purchase that a man will ever make has reached epic proportions because of Hollywood’s portrayal of this type of jacket as part of the rebellious nature of youth. But, long before its adoption by Hollywood, and their projection of the leather jacket as bad boy apparel, the infamous leather jacket was used by European air force pilots because of its protective qualities. Pilots as early as 1915 proudly wore long trench type coats and flying suits that were made of durable leather, and this trend quickly caught on stateside as the Americans adopted and then adapted the look and created the now iconic bomber jacket suitable for high altitude pilots. The closer to your body that your jacket sits, and the thicker the lining on the garment, the warmer you will be, and the hotter you will look while wearing it. If you reside in a country with harsh winters you can purchase winterized jackets with thick linings sewn into the leather itself. Supple leathers are most comfortable, but the rugged leathers look the meanest. When you wear leather, you mean business.

How To Buy The Perfect Leather Jacket

1. A great leather jacket will hug your shoulders snugly, and not drape from them.

Fatigue
The most true to military heritage of our favourite three styles is the Fatigue. Still in use by military officers around the world, the fatigue will give you that edgy look.

Motocross
Also known as the racer, this type of leather jacket will give you a sleek and athletic profile. Remember to choose a jacket one size smaller than your other clothes so that it can stretch and mold over the contours of your body. When worn with raw denim and dress shoes this jacket nicely straddles the the boundary of formal and casual.

Variations of the motocross have evolved into what is known as the biker jacket. Look for one with a few zippers like the jacket depicted below.

Bomber
Another military derived jacket is the bomber. Most people don’t have the guts or knowhow on how to street a true bomber jacket similar to what was worn by bomber pilots, and that is why we have presented a picture of a truly streetable bomber inspired jacket below.

Now when it comes to wearing a leather jacket stylishly most men fail miserably, but in actuality it is really quite simple. There are only two ways to wear a leather jacket. We at the Metropolitan call it the “Top-Bottom Rule”. The rule simply states that if you have a formal top, you must have a casual bottom, and if you have a casual top, you must have a formal bottom. That’s it! So if you wear for an example a tie on the top you have to wear casual pants and sneakers to go with it. Or, if you wear a very casual top underneath your jacket, you have to wear dress pants and dress shoes. If you can remember the Top-Bottom rule you will never go wrong when you wear your leather jacket.

Be Monochromatic

This is a big secret amongst fashionable gents, but if you chose pieces that are different hues of the same colour on the colour wheel, you will create the optical illusion of being taller. A good example is if you wear pants and shoes that are different shades of the same colour, this will cause your legs to appear more elongated. Along with this style tip, opt for darker colours, particularly black. Black and deep shades of grey will cause for you to appear more slender, and project an assertive and dominant presence. The psychologically intimidating and dominant nature of the colour black has been well studied and can be used to your advantage...ever notice how the sexy bad boy with women dripping off of his arms in cinema always chooses to wear black?---it’s no coincidence!

Hairstyle

Layer The Love

The ability to layer ones clothes is what sets a fashionable gent apart from the rest of the pack. Mastery of this skill is what will enable you to consistently produce fashionable outfits that express your unique personality. Layering is especially important during the winter and spring months because in addition to adding a flare to your style, it helps to keep you warm. Another great plus for mastering the art of layering is that it is an ideal way to plan ahead, if it is cold in the morning you have more layers, and as it gradually warms up during the day you can take of the required layers and still maintain a stylish persona.

The Metropolitan presents you with some simple guidelines to help you execute that perfect layered look that will keep you ahead of the curve.

1. The thinnest layers always come first (closest to the skin), and they are then topped off with heavier garments which rest over top. This means you want to first put on cotton t-shirts, dress shirts or vests, and use it as a canvas for putting on heavier garments on top of that.

2. Your outfit doesn’t have to match the dull weather outside. If it is cloudy or rainy, that doesn’t mean that you have to wear dull colours to match the environment. Try adding a pop of colour here or there, and you will find that it will lift your spirits as well! Splashes of reds, hints of purple and dashes of green will set you apart from the other monochromatically garmented people that you will see on the streets.

3. In addition to injecting colour into your outfit, remember that each layer has to have the ability to be worn on its own. That means if you take off the layer on top, the layer that remains has to look great as a standalone outfit. This is one of the biggest secrets in layering.

4. Each layer has to tie with the layer above and below it. For example, don’t pair a loud graphic t-shirt with a shabby old vest and dress shirt because you are just creating a hodge-podge look that isn’t aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Aim for congruency. It is always fun to experiment, however, if the occasion deems it necessary to wear formal attire, never go above three layers.

Look 1

This first look is very casual and great for spring time because it keeps you warm, and stylish at the same time. This type of outfit is great for college students because of its more relaxed nature. The hoodie can be removed if the classroom becomes too stuffy, and you will still be able to maintain a trendy style because of the vest and scarf. If you need to get physical for whatever reason, just remove the vest and scarf and you have a crisp white t-shirt with clean lines.

Look 2

Our second look will give you that edgy bad boy appeal. Stick to dark colours and layer a long leeved button up shirt with a dark tank top. Choose a stylish scarf and a structured form fitting black leather jacket and you are good to rock.

Look 3

Our third and final look is the most formal, but heavy on the accessories for those that want to spice it up a notch. There is no denying it, the "man bag" is not a fad, but a style staple. Only recently adopted by North Americans, variations of the carry-all have been used by men the world over for years now. So this begs the question “what's in the bag ?” So in an effort to answer this question, the Metropolitan presents to you a short guide about what to carry in your carry-all, and not in your pockets.

Your mobile phone is an obvious item to carry in your kit bag. Some people who staunchly oppose the carry-all argue that it is inconvenient to have to search through a bag for a ringing device, however, the fact of the matter is that the majority of carry-alls have a dedicated compartment for mobile phones and other networking devices.

When it rains, it pours—and that is certainly going to destroy your outfit. So to keep dry in all weather it is advisable to carry a compact collapsible umbrella in your carry-all. Just remember to bring the sleeve that came with your umbrella as well, because you would be quite foolish to shove a wet umbrella back into your kit.

The following item is optional because most people carry electronic organizers or mobile phones with those capabilities, but for all you old school gents out there you can put your old school diary in your kit bag as well....Don’t forget your pen as well!

What’s that funky smell? Oh it’s you! Always a good idea to carry some deodorant or cologne in your kit.

Ass Like Adonis, How To Buy Jeans

The word “jeans” originates from the French phrase bleu de Gênes which translates to “blue of Genoa” because the material hails from the town of Genoa. The fabric used to manufacture jeans was also historically produced in the French town of Nimes and that is why jeans are sometimes also called “denim”. As an interesting side note, dungarees (known as overalls in North America) which are also made of denim were originally worn by sailors hailing from the Indian town of Dhunga, hence the nomenclature. As you can clearly see the iconic blue jeans has enjoyed a truly universal international appeal as a fashion staple, but then why do so many men get it all wrong? In this article we are going to a take a closer look at jeans, and teach you how to select the perfect pair.

Shopping For Jeans

Writing a style guide about shopping for jeans is no easy feat because they come in a plethora of cuts and a multitude of colours which come in and out of fashion depending on the prevailing trends. The three classics colours that are here to stay are:

Original Blue/Raw

The original jeans were only available in these colour and hailed from the town of Chieri in Renaissance Italy. These pants were sold to sailors whose port of call was Genoa. The Genoese Navy of the time also issued pants of this type to their sailors because of their unique property of being extremely durable when either wet or dry. Members of the navy would wear these rugged pants while swabbing the decks of ships. It is estimated that presently 20 million tons of indigo dye annually (almost exclusively cultivated in modern day India's Bengal region) are used to colour jeans blue. In modern times the Original Blue Jean is the most adaptable of the three classics as it can be paired with almost any type of clothing.

Faded Blue
Slightly more casual than the Original Blue Jean this colour is sometimes paired with blazers to take the formality up a notch. But it is recommended to stick to Original Blue for the more formal affairs.

Dirty/Rust
Faded till the blue turns to a more rust like colour similar to leaves in fall, these jeans are the most casual of the three classics, and often used by fashion designers to create more unique styles.

A factor that you must consider when purchasing your jeans is whether or not comfort is extremely important to you, or can you sacrifice a little comfort for more style? This is because you cannot have both. If for example the jeans are for lounging around the house you may opt for more comfort, however, if the trousers are for use at a workplace that requires semi-formal attire, you should opt in favour of style. So what consitutes style when it comes to jeans? The fashion industry is cyclical meaning a certain trend will be popular for a few years, until it is replaced by the opposing trend for another few years, only to be then replaced yet again by the original trend. "Flare" refers to the width of the bottom-most portion of the leg on the pants. The bottom will taper out slightly resembling a bell (hence the origin of the term "bell-bottom") in styles known as "boot cut", "skinny jeans" and "straight cut" styles there is a lack of this tapering.

Regardless of whether you choose to wear flared or non flared jeans you must ensure that you select a pair that will give you a proper fit. Key areas such as legs, crotch, and waist should not be excessively tight and restrictive. The rear of the pants should nicely package your backside. When making your purchase keep in mind that after the first few washes the jeans will shrink slightly even if it says "pre-shrunk". on the label. The best way to test fit is to bring with you to the store everything that you plan to carry with you when wearing your new jeans. Is the potential candidate able to accommodate your wallet? Car keys? Cell phone? These are some of the questions that you should be asking yourself. Also bring with you the belt that you wear most often because often times the loop holes in designer jeans can be too large or too small to ensure a good fit, so it is important to test this out beforehand. And finally, when shopping make sure to wear the shoes that you plan to wear with your new jeans and check out the pants in the mirror to see if you like how the pants fall over top of the shoes.

There are a large variety of cuts for jeans, but here are a few of the most popular:

Bootcut

A more rebellious old school style with a tighter fitting thigh and slightly flared bottom to allow for the wearing of boots.

Straight Cut

Always in style, these can be worn for semi-formal and casual occasions alike.

Slim/Skinny/Drain Pipe

Similar to the straight cut, but exceptionally narrow to provide a very trendy silhouette of the leg. Often the denim in these jeans is mixed with Lycra to give it a more stretchable property which helps the jeans mould to the contours of the wearer's leg.

Relaxed Fit

They are the widest of all the cuts, and in all parts of the world except North America they are exclusively worn by elderly men. Low Rise
