Week Four: Captain America Let’s be honest, weakness is a bad word in most circles. We don’t like to admit that we are weak. Whether we’re at work, among friends, or even at church, we tend to mask the things that might make us look bad. And yet, the Apostle Paul seems to suggest that we should boast about our weaknesses. In fact, he writes to the Corinthian Church, “When I am weak, then I am strong.” In the movie, Captain America, there is a scene where Steve Rogers is told, “Only a weak man can know the true value of strength.” Those words seem to echo the Apostle Paul’s. This week, we’re talking about weakness. We’re going to look at the very things that many people think disqualify them from God’s service in hopes of discovering the secret to seeing God be fully glorified through our lives.

Even those on Titanic the wealthy were seen as having more value than the poor. In fact, the majority of those who survived the tragedy at sea were first class passengers. The sad truth is that even today, people are judged based on certain outward criteria. Race, popularity, looks, age, and many other factors determine what we think of people. Some argue it’s simply “human nature.” But shouldn’t the Church be different? The Apostle James believes it should be. He challenged the church to rise above showing favourtism based on wealth or any other factor. This week, we look at James’ words and ask the honest question, “Do I judge based on outward criteria?”

Week Three: Generosity There are a lot of false teachings when it comes to money. The prosperity gospel and the poverty gospel are two of them. And yet, even distorted teachings can have truth buried within them. As we wrap up our Multiply series, we'll look at the principle of sowing and reaping. What does it mean when God promises to multiply what we give? Scripture seems to be clear that we can reap up to a 100 times blessing on our giving. Is that a guarantee? Does it mean that if I give, I'll be blessed with a mansion, luxury cars, and everything I might want? Or, should I be content with very little? So many questions. God wants us to be generous people. We've come a long way with this series. We've talked about the importance of living a life of purpose. We've walked through the steps of aligning our life with the values we hold; of recognizing the uniqueness of our S.H.A.P.E.; of committing our lives to our purpose; and, of defining our life's mission statement. The question some are likely asking is this; how do I find the time to live our my purpose? It's a valid question. The reality is that most of us have far too much on our plates as it is. North Americans are far too busy. As the saying goes, "God put me on earth to accomplish a certain number of things. I'm so far behind, I will never die!" So, the challenge is this: Are we going to let our schedule control us, or are we going to make the hard choices necessary to make our schedule align to our purpose? It can be done. It is possible. But it wont be easy. This week, we'll talk about what we have to do in order to organize our time around our purpose.

Many years ago, Nike came up with one of the most famous slogans of all time: Just Do It. Let's be honest, too many people never "just do it." They waver. They debate. They consider all the options. They keep a back up plan. They talk about doing it. But they never get around to actually making the commitment to step out and do it. As we continue looking at Living A Life Of Purpose, we're going to zero in on making a commitment to living out your life's purpose. "But, how can I commit to living out my purpose before I know what my purpose is?" It's a great question. And yet, God doesn't seem to do things the way we think they should be done. All through the Bible, we find God inviting people to commit to his plan before he gives them all the details. What God is really doing is asking us, "Do you trust me? Will you commit to me even without knowing all that I have in store for you?" How you answer that question will determine just how much of your purpose you'll discover.

According to a number of different studies, close to 95% of Christians will never lead another person into a relationship with Jesus Christ. It's a sad fact that The Church is becoming less influential within society every year. The average person simply doesn't see any relevance in the local church and has no interest in becoming part of it. This series is focusing on the journey forward. Have you ever taken a road trip? Most people have. It can be an incredible adventure. It can also be a total disaster. Those who take a lot of trips know that most often, the end result will be determined long before you pull out of your driveway. Especially if the trip is more than a few days. The more you plan and prepare for the trip, the more likely it will be successful. Even the spontaneous parts of a trip are better when there's been some pre-trip planning. The more people you have on your trip, the more important it is to prepare in advance. God is inviting us to take a trip with him. An adventure. A journey. When we take this journey with others, we are called a church. When we prepare in advance, the church's journey is incredible. We see amazing things happen. When we don't prepare, the church experiences disaster and the people involved rarely make it through the trip together. This month we are preparing for the journey God is going to take us on. We are doing some pre-planning. What are the key elements we need to have with us when we pull out of the driveway? What factors need to be in place in order to ensure that our journey lives up to the adventure God wants us to experience?

A Resolution - A Marathon

Christmas is over, the gifts have all been unwrapped, and in some cases even been returned and exchanged for new ones, the parties and get togethers are almost finished, and the rest of the left over turkey has been thrown out in the green bins. This is the time of year when we can look back at our accomplishments from last year and look forward to what will happen next year. We prepare resolutions for New Year’s eve and promise our friends and ourselves that this year, will be the year! The year that I am finally going to be successful, only to be disappointed within 2 weeks to a month into the New Year! And that’s when it all goes down hill from here. The great news is our faith journey isn’t based on a New Year’s resolution, it’s not a sprint to the finish line it’s a marathon that needs to be well planned and well executed. There will be some falls and some disappointments but we can and will get up and carry on.

Pantophobia Do you have any phobias? Sure you do. Most of us are afraid of something. After talking with Psychiatrist Lucy, Charlie Brown discovered that he has Pantophobia, the fear of everything. Most of us are not that bad! Do you realize that there are good fears as well as bad fears? There are some things that it's good to fear. Sometimes, our fear of something keeps us safe and unharmed. But, it's the bad fears that paralyze us. And, there is one fear at the top of most people's list. And, it usually reveals itself during the special seasons of the year. This Christmas, many people will battle with this particular fear. Join us as we take some time to come to grips with this particular fear and look at what the Bible says about how to deal with it.

Around the world, families have made it a tradition to watch the show as part of their Christmas celebrations. This year's Christmas series takes Charlie Brown's Christmas to a whole new level. We'll discover some key biblical truths found within that thirty minute show. This week, we're talking about The Perfect Doghouse. While Charlie Brown struggles with getting into the Christmas spirit, Snoopy gets busy turning his house into the ultimate Christmas showpiece. He covers it with lights and other decorations in hope of winning the neighbourhood award for best looking house. Many of us struggle with putting on the ultimate "show" at Christmas time. The decorations, food, social events, gifts, and even people must be just perfect or else we feel like we've failed to do Christmas "right." As one woman put it: "If you're not in the bathroom crying by midnight on Christmas Eve, you haven't done enough." Is it possible to be free of all the stress, worry, and demands of Christmas?

A New Chapter

You prepare for weeks. During that time, you work hard at not sinning. You only listen to worship music. You're nice to your in-laws. You tip more than you need to. You even help a little old lady cross the street. And now, it's time. You've built up enough "credit." So, you pray and ask God for something very specific. It doesn't happen. And you just don't understand why. Why is it that sometimes our prayers go unanswered? Or, even worse, it seems like the very opposite thing happens? Is it because God doesn't care? Almost everyone has done it. In some cases, we don't even realize we're doing it. At other times, we stumble along trying to figure it out. Prayer. We know it's important. And yet, many of us aren't quite sure what it is. We believe that some people - spiritual people - are more likely to get their prayers answered, and so we often turn to others to pray for us. And yet, the Bible seems to suggest that prayer is something we can all do. This week, we launch our new series, Prayer, by focusing on the basics. We'll learn what it is, why we do it, and how we can become praying people.
